You got them boulder shoulders with extra boulders! Exactly what I'm looking for, as I have a neck that makes giraffes look short. Farmers walks also give me runners high haha
I started lifting and strength training 12 weeks ago and I just found your channel a week ago. I'm truly addicted and want to learn from you as much as possible. I wish I would've watched this before yesterday, because I did my first set of Farmer Walks with dumbbells at my gym and felt something pop near my AC Joint. Going to get it checked out tonight. I know now that I shouldn't have let my shoulders drop and flex my traps while walking.. I should've kept my shoulders back and chest high. I just hope that it's a level 1 or 2 AC Joint injury and that I will heal 100%. I really want to start doing Strongman Training and this took the wind out of my sails. I know you have been through some bad injuries and that inspires me.. Thank you for the great channel!
great info. i thought i knew everything about farmers walk, but you taught me something and i can't wait to try it. i already knew and agree with every other fact you said, but i never thought of cancelling momentum around the turns by opposing the handles. fantastic idea! i'm actually excited. 54 years old, can carry 210 in each hand for 25 feet out, turn, 25 feet return, 420 total. the only thing you didn't mention was romanian grip. i use it because i use triceps bars for my farmers walk. a cheap way out of buying fw handles. much better than dumbells. if you're reading this and like the idea, don't get the threaded handles. get the smooth handles and use spring clamps. it will save you time and aggravation during your workout. but romanian grip isn't possible with thick handles. you won't be able to reach and overlap your thumbs with your fingers. it takes a while to toughen the thumbs, but it's well worth it. probably get an extra 20 pounds in each hand with romanian grip. i learned it from a tommy kono seminar at york barbell when they inducted bill kazmeir into the strongman hall of fame. great event. kono is a genius. you may also like, magnus samuelson says to tighten the traps into an actual shrug to free up the legs. now i've tried it, but i don't really like it. i like my arms to just hang off my shoulders like ropes. this way i can put more of my mind into my grip, and let hip strength drive me. i'm sure it all has to do with body types. anyway, kudos my friend, great video. i will check you out often. maybe sometime i'll send you some outdoor workout video.
Thank you so much for uploading this Brian, I can't tell you how long I've been waiting for this 'How To' Video lol! Farmers Walk is one of my favourite workouts and this is going to help me a ton. Thanks again brother!
Dude i just stumbled on your channel the other day and i"m in love. you are awesome to watch, articulate and really seem to cover all the questions i have. Keep killing it man!
This is the most helpful video on this topic that I have ever seen. Especially appreciate the turn instruction as I see now how I can make those turns better. Many thanks.
Love this channel, I started doing farmers carries at my gym and you are right, everything hurts. I only have access to trap bar and have done 40' walk with 410#...its no joke. Thanks Brian
Awesome vids man, appreciate all the effort and positive energy. Turned up the frequency and intensity of my farmer's walks. Graduated from my gym's biggest dumbells/kettlebells to a heavy-loaded trap bar for more carry weight. Keep the vids coming
Wow... never seen anyone take the trouble to teach the turn. Thank you. One question after watching this vid and the one you did on the yoke carry... if I could pick one to do for more upper body strength, which should I go with?
Great info, Brian. If any of your clients struggle with rolling their feet to walk smoothly, check out some marching band videos. It's called roll-step, or glide-step, and it's exactly what you were talking about.
I don't have access to farmer's walks implements and my gym has a 34kg max dumbell, but I do have 2 H bars on my gym, so I load them up and use'em as if they were the implements. It works pretty well
that tip for walking quietly/gently works miracles. this tip also applies to running and jogging. don't slap your feet, imagine you're barefoot and place your feet softly.
Nice shout out to Clint, I've stumbled on to his videos recently and have picked up a few things from his channel as well. It would be cool to see a RUclips Strongman meet.
Brian, thank you for doing these videos. I feel like you're going to be one of the most sought after coaches in the near future. Could you please elaborate on exactly how to breathe and brace during the farmer's walk. Breathing and bracing has added exponential gains to all of my other lifts. But here we are walking, we must breathe at some point, right? I've been breathing and bracing while picking up the implements. Then breathing normally while walking, bracing as much as possible. Am I doing it wrong?
I want start incorporating Farmer Walks into my training now. Should I use these as a secondary type exercise on deadlift days or would that be too taxing on my CNS for one day? Thanks for all the content you crank out. It is greatly appreciated.
Brain, this video has been incredibly helpful! The advice on the turn is awesome. I would have never figured that one out on my own. It's made a huge difference in my farmer's carries. Do you have a "How to Yoke Carry"? I've been working my way though your channel, but haven't seen it yet. Cheers, JK
Thank samna, but I have't made that one yet. My Strongman videos get less views than anything so I only throw them in sparingly. I wish there was more of an audience because I have a LOT to say about that kind of stuff!
+Brian Alsruhe Brian, could you explain what you mean about the sport's stigma? I didn't know it had a stigma. I thought bodybuilding had more of a stigma because of the *extreme* steroid use and unnatural looking physiques, whereas strongman was pretty respected (as functional, authentic etc.).
Hey Brian, stumbled across your channel a while back and you have become one of my favorite youtubers! Seriously do not understand how you do not have like 500,000 subs! Anyway, I have a question/request. How would one go about programming strongman training? Would love if you made a video on this. I always wondered how many days are spent doing barbell movements & how many days are for strongman implements. How would you work them into lets say a 3x a week fullbody routine, or an uppper lower split? Keep up the good work man!
Thanks for the kind words! I made a like 12 minute long video explaining how to layout strongman programming into your normal strength routine on Alan Thrall's Channel. It is called "Free Strength program" or something like that. That should point you in the right direction. Also if you want me to lay out a personalized program for you, i sell that service through my website
I'll check that out, thanks. Would love to hire you but am broke at the moment haha, whenever I have a spare bit of cash I would definitely be up for it though. Cheers.
Brian, New subscriber great channel...! Question: Can you build decent leg size with just specializing in farmers carries? Or do you need to add in some form of front or back squats? I was thinking of the following: Monday: Heavy short distance Tuesday: off Wednesday: lite long distance Thursday: off Friday: medium / medium distance Repeat... Would I need to add any dead lifts or is this enough hip hinging? Not a strongman just enjoy all the benifits of the loaded carries. Many thanks....and Happy New Year. Best regards, Eric
Another great video as always! I just had a really random question though! I want to use my trap bar for farmers walks. My max on the trap bar deadlift is 570. I'm aiming for total body HYPERTROPHY, not strength nor endurance etc...what percent of my 1rm (570lbs) should I start with..I'm aiming for 3 sets of 30 yard walks..my endurance is okay but I just want to put on size...thanks!
Hey man, great video and awsome channel, I know this video is kind off old BUT if you could, I have kind off a "noob question" hahahaha, I split my training in 3 days (Squat Day/Bench Day/Deadlift Day) sooo, in wich day should I put the farmer's walk??? (Sorry for my realy bad english, i'm a brazilian hahahaha)
In the turn of the weight, you make it look easy with one plate. But.. what if I put more plates? Doesn't look easy to cross the outside wing over the top inside wing with a bunch of plates. Another problem is that I can't just drop the weight and grab it again in the turn because it hurts A LOT and the calluses gets worse (I would only do it in a competition). Is there any weight or distance that I should not do the turns? In my gym i have 50-60 feet of distance to walk. Thanks! And by the way.. this channel is amazing! Subscribed.
thank you a lot your videos always so useful I appreciated please I have a question what about yoke walk is farmer walk is enough or both of them should be in my training program and also what a bout shrugs too? thank you So much
Farmer's Walks, strongman movements and heavy deadlifts man. They work like magic. Have you ever seen a serious strongman competitor who didn't have huge traps? It works for everyone. Just gotta put in the work my friend!
Wicked video. I learned a whole lot. I always hesitate using farmers walk implement cause my gym has a uni-directional indoor track where we are allowed to use them so I'm always forced to go the full 200m. That's when taking breaks every so often counteracts my ego. I'm definitely going to implement them more often. Which lift days (bench, dealing, squat, ohp or row) do you recommend adding these farmers walks to?
Hahaha I can totally understand that brother! I like to throw them after my deadlifts since a lot of the same muscles are used. But if I am getting ready for using them in a comp, I will have a carry day all on it's own
One of our competitions this year the farmer's had almost 1 3/4 inch handles... good luck hook gripping that. I'd say if you can do it do it, but do it in competition only, don't sacrifice the grip training.
Very true. I have trouble with the hook grip anyway. My hands are just to small. I just opened up a gym and decided to include some strongman implements. Thought I'd get some opinions for my members. I appreciate the input.
I totally understand man but make the most of what you have. I didn't have access until about 2 years ago when I decided to buy my own. But i feel your pain brother!
Because they roll out of your hand like a double overhand deadlift. The farmer's handles pull straight down . The weight distribution changes the entire game man!
Brian, do you program your farmers on DL day? It makes sense for me, but I'm curious if there's a better day to switch it to (if one is doing grip/accessory work on one day, for example)
Hey, man. Do you shrug your shoulders as you walk, or do you let the weights pull down on the traps (where you get that downward stretch on the traps)?
"Don't do that"....lol... So do you have and videos on injures and or prevention. I have been overdoing frequency on bench and deadlift (not smart...but I was getting gains). I don't have a tear yet (I think) in my biceps and the area that the pec connects to the left arm, but I feel something nasty there when I stretch. I have been doing nothing for the past week and a half, hoping for the best! lol that is the only way I know on how to combat that! Head goes body follows...lol thats a Wrestling/Jui-Jitsu thought process. And yes I know the Road Runner, my life choices are on point....for the most part!
Yea man, I made one a few weeks ago but it is more about lower back problems but it covers some basic injury stuff as well. I hope it helps you out man, and hope you feel better soon man!
I always play airplane. Even right now... Haha, great tips for the competition (Althought that I do farmer walks only for grip strength and the benefits that come within, great tips anyways!) Question Brian, which is your take in using a trap bar for farmer walks? Thanks dudedededededede
Thanks Brian! I'm thinking of buying one, since my gym dumbbells only up to 30kg (70lbs I think?) and I already have many plates in my gym home. 30kgs dumbbells? Lol, right in the feels.
@brianalsuhe What about knee pain/shoe selection during the farmers walk? I recently started doing farmers walks at my gym, I did them three times a week for a week and then started to do another session the next week and could barely do them because the pain in my knees. I dont know if its because my knees arent used to the farmer walks or if its my shoes i was wearing(new balance running shoes) or a combo of both. What do you recommend- Thanks
Question - Brian - have you any experience and/or thoughts that you can share regarding the use of SPUD portable farmers handles? I have been thinking about purchasing them because they are portable (convenient) and they can handle the weight. However I do question whether the grip and the "to/fro movement" (or lack thereof) might not transition well to traditional farmer's handles work.
I made some from slings and pipe. Works grip and traps and trains the movement. But you already identified the major difference between handles. Pull height is different and easier with straps as well. But they do kill the body.
Yea, i agree with what Ryan said. I have never used any myself so I am not sure how good or bad they are. But something is usually better than nothing!
Love this stuff 🔥 all the way from land down under 🇦🇺 awesome video, love all your content. You mentioned heavy days, moderate days etc. what do you mean? I normally do the average 3-4x10 and play around the 8-12 reps. If you’re changing the volumes how do you do this with letting optimal rest in between sessions. What is an average training week for you regarding this topic? I am wanting to participate in strongman and powerlifting and I have slender shoulders (as they’re undeveloped) and a small frame. I weigh 91kg, am 5”8’ My powerlifting PR’s are: Deadlift - 180kg Bench - 107.5kg Squat - 140kg Any tips??
Man, Its almost 2am and I need to go to sleep but all I want to do is to pick some heavy shit in my hands and go with it for a walk. People would think that Im some robber or something. I think a better idea would be if I'll do it tomorrow morning. Peace
Hey brian, Im currently lifting at a commercial gym and we only have dumbbells. Is it okay to strap up to make sure im getting a longer carry or just carry till my grip dies.
For a cheap alternative I filled two 5-gallon buckets with 45lbs of concrete each, then added whatever weights I could fit in the bucket. 25's fit nicely. I was able to get about 130lbs in there before running out of weight. It's not perfect, but it'll do until you can get some handles.
Why this dude got 2 sets of shoulders
Hahaha, I am confused
your traps lol
Hahaha thanks man! they are from heavy farmer's and deads
trap workout video please !
You got them boulder shoulders with extra boulders! Exactly what I'm looking for, as I have a neck that makes giraffes look short.
Farmers walks also give me runners high haha
The fact that you fell and still smoked those guys is crazy
count trapula
Hahaha!
oh, hi son.
Wow this is the most comprehensive farmers walk video I've seen on RUclips... and it's 7 years old. Bravo!
i became a biggest fan of this dude, man you break it down and explain it. subscribe for this guy and you won't regret it
Thank you so much man!
Love how you reply to every comment :) Few youtubers care about their fans that much. Great content by the way :)
Thank you so much, i really appreciate that!
One of the best videos out their on farmer walk tips! Thanks
I really appreciate that brother!
After seeing that first clip when u fell and never gave up I have much respect for u sir
you got huge HAAUUUGEEEE traps... vid on that ? tips/tricks would be really great :D
I think its all his carries, deadlifts and presses.
Hahaha yea man, this IS the video on how to get them! It is all of the carries and heavy deadlifts I do
Steroids
Hard work+ roids
That was super informative and helpful, especially the part about the turns. I hate the turns. Can't wait to try this out!
That will be a game changer for you brother!
Hahaha! I'm a girl, so mastering the turns must be a man maker of sorts! Too much of a game changer...
I definitely have trouble with turns! Thanks for the tips. I'm only 155, but I can do 185 per hand for 40 yards, but turning at 20 yards is killer!
Thanks for the advice! I'm currently at 74kg in each hand at 99kg bodyweight

shooting and moving. i KNEW it! i called it on one of your first videos. you have a military/LEO swagger to you.
Not anymore my friend...That was a past life

My man. Your traps are out of this world. Started with farmer's walk today and it is definitely my new fav exercise!
Thank you so much for uploading this Brian, I can't tell you how long I've been waiting for this 'How To' Video lol! Farmers Walk is one of my favourite workouts and this is going to help me a ton. Thanks again brother!
Sure thing TJ, sorry it didn't get made faster!
No worries! Can't wait to see what more you got in store for us!!
Hopefully some good content!...I hope!
I love you and respect your work because you do this for strength and not aesthetics
Sure thing Bob, Glad it helped!
Turns are working better for me already thanks to the advice you presented here. Very helpful.
Sure thing man, i am glad it helped!
Love this channel, I started doing farmers carries at my gym and you are right, everything hurts. I only have access to trap bar and have done 40' walk with 410#...its no joke. Thanks Brian

Got that farmer's tan to go with the walk lol
Yep...I burn easily
Wow... never seen anyone take the trouble to teach the turn. Thank you.
One question after watching this vid and the one you did on the yoke carry... if I could pick one to do for more upper body strength, which should I go with?
thanks so much. I'm only 13 and I am in need of every tip I can get! so thankyou for the video
4:22 hell that's a enormous forearm! Looks like you could crush rocks with bare hands!!! O.O
Hey Brian, I really enjoy your channel. All of your content is pure gold! Keep it up!
Thanks Neal, I really appreciate that!
Great info, Brian. If any of your clients struggle with rolling their feet to walk smoothly, check out some marching band videos. It's called roll-step, or glide-step, and it's exactly what you were talking about.
That is a great tip brother, thank you!
fantastic video. very informative and well delivered. farmers walks are one of my favorite bang for the buck exercises and this will make them better
That is great, I'm glad it helped!
Good advice thanks dude
I don't have access to farmer's walks implements and my gym has a 34kg max dumbell, but I do have 2 H bars on my gym, so I load them up and use'em as if they were the implements. It works pretty well
Great sprawl and recovery dude! Seriously, good information.
Hahah thanks man, it definitely got dicey!
Not gonna lie, Alan brought me here. But I subscribed instantly! Love the videos, man! Thanks all the way from Mexico!
thanks a ton Brian! hopefully my turns will look less drunk from now on
Hahahah hopefully brother!
that tip for walking quietly/gently works miracles. this tip also applies to running and jogging. don't slap your feet, imagine you're barefoot and place your feet softly.
Nice shout out to Clint, I've stumbled on to his videos recently and have picked up a few things from his channel as well.
It would be cool to see a RUclips Strongman meet.
He seems like a really cool guy, i hope I get to meet him some day but he lives in Cyprus now, so it is pretty doubtful
For the roll step if anyone happens to be or have been a marching band nerd (like I was in high school) it's the same step you use for marching band.
Absolutely true!
Thanks, Brian. You're awesome.
Awsome tips. Great job.
Thanks brother!
Excellent content, enjoy the channel. Thanks for the videos.

Ok, I’ll be studying this for tomorrow’s workout. Need to clean up my turn for the online qualifier next month
The tips and knowledge in this video!! My lanta. Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge with us! I want to try farmer's walks now.
That is awesome man, you should definitely give them a try!

Thank samna, but I have't made that one yet. My Strongman videos get less views than anything so I only throw them in sparingly. I wish there was more of an audience because I have a LOT to say about that kind of stuff!
10-4, I'd defiantly watch it. I guess most people don't have access to the equipment...
Yea or they choose not to participate because of the Sport's stigma. But hopefully that is changing.
well, you have one new watcher here. i do dinosaur workouts. i'll look at your strongman stuff. thanks.
+Brian Alsruhe Brian, could you explain what you mean about the sport's stigma? I didn't know it had a stigma. I thought bodybuilding had more of a stigma because of the *extreme* steroid use and unnatural looking physiques, whereas strongman was pretty respected (as functional, authentic etc.).

great video! really like strongman training looks badass
It's a lot of fun, you should try it!
I love these vids man. I have applied all your tips in my training, and it has already started paying off. Cheers!
That is awesome feedback man, thank you!
Welcome to the Trap Nation. Your guide:Brian Alsruhe ;)
Brian,
New subscriber great channel...!
Question: Can you build decent leg size with just specializing in farmers carries?
Or do you need to add in some form of front or back squats?
I was thinking of the following:
Monday: Heavy short distance
Tuesday: off
Wednesday: lite long distance
Thursday: off
Friday: medium / medium distance
Repeat...
Would I need to add any dead lifts or is this enough hip hinging?
Not a strongman just enjoy all the benifits of the loaded carries.
Many thanks....and Happy New Year.
Best regards,
Eric
Great tips! Thank you!
Excellent. Thanks.
Great video, just got me some farmers, time to put thede tips in motion.
Excellent info/video!!!
Brian... your traps, dude... damn lol
Great content! Thanks a lot. I understand the 3 different days with variation of distance and weight. Do u recommend 1 day a week? Thanks
In the turn of the weight, you make it look easy with one plate. But.. what if I put more plates? Doesn't look easy to cross the outside wing over the top inside wing with a bunch of plates. Another problem is that I can't just drop the weight and grab it again in the turn because it hurts A LOT and the calluses gets worse (I would only do it in a competition). thank you a lot
your videos always so useful I appreciated
please I have a question
what about yoke walk is farmer walk is enough or both of them should be in my training program and also what a bout shrugs too?
thank you So much
good advice. Thanks!
Uoooou
look your Traps!!!
HOW DID YOU GET THIS?? hehsehaa
Hahaha I can totally understand that brother! I like to throw them after my deadlifts since a lot of the same muscles are used. But if I am getting ready for using them in a comp, I will have a carry day all on it's own
Very good thank you so much.
Sure thing man!
Big fan Brian. How do you feel about the hook grip with farmers walks? Any thoughts.
I would love it if I could pull it off. The handles are too wide so I can't seem to get it. But if I could, i would
One of our competitions this year the farmer's had almost 1 3/4 inch handles... good luck hook gripping that. I'd say if you can do it do it, but do it in competition only, don't sacrifice the grip training.

Absolutely man, f you need anymore ideas, feel free to bounce them off of me
I love farmers walks. I just wish my gym wasn't so bad and had some bars :( I want a huge upper back like yours. feels bad man.
I totally understand man but make the most of what you have. I didn't have access until about 2 years ago when I decided to buy my own. But i feel your pain brother!
this is super in depth
Another top notch how-to. Good stuff!
Thanks Benjamin!
trapzilla!
Hahahah strongman movements my friend, they work every time!
4:24 - The hulk holding a rope
Hey Brian, awesome content! Could you clarify why using dumbbells rather than specific farmers walk equipment will be more harsh on your grip?
Because they roll out of your hand like a double overhand deadlift. The farmer's handles pull straight down . The weight distribution changes the entire game man!
Makes sense. Thanks
Sure thing
awesome video bro.. tons of info.. will implement it
Thanks man, i appreciate it!
Another great video. Very helpful, thanks!!
Glad it was helpful brother!
Brian, do you program your farmers on DL day? It makes sense for me, but I'm curious if there's a better day to switch it to (if one is doing grip/accessory work on one day, for example)
thanks for this great info. yep I learned something new :)
Sure thing, thanks for watching!
Had to watch that at the start a couple times haha
Thanks for this, I have a hell of a time with turns!
They definitely mess a lot of people up, I am glad you found it helpful!
Amazing traps dude
11 minutes resume, pick something enough heavy to do with a good form, and walk with this with the same good form.
Quality content right here.
Thanks Phil!
I always play airplane. Even right now...
Haha, great tips for the competition (Althought that I do farmer walks only for grip strength and the benefits that come within, great tips anyways!)
Question Brian, which is your take in using a trap bar for farmer walks? Thanks dudedededededede
I think it is a much better option than dumbbells, but doing ANY sort of farmer's walk is better than none
Thanks Brian! I'm thinking of buying one, since my gym dumbbells only up to 30kg (70lbs I think?) and I already have many plates in my gym home.
30kgs dumbbells? Lol, right in the feels.
Hahaha special feels...
Oh God the sideways stagger on the turn is the WORST. Bad memories from my first strongman contest.
Mine too man, I had no idea why I was telling my feet to go straight but I was walking off the course!
best tutorial out there! and im a fan of the funny cuts
Thank you so much for saying that!
Would a hex bar work as a substitute for actual handles or are dumbbells the best alternative?
I think the hex or trap bar would be better than dumbbells. No doubt there. Dumbbells should be your last resort if you don't have other options
Awesome... Thanks Brian!
Sure thing!
Sure thing!
I weigh 91kg, am 5”8’
My powerlifting PR’s are:
Deadlift - 180kg
Bench - 107.5kg
Squat - 140kg
Any tips??
Hey Brian, what are your thoughts on using a trap bar if you don't have farmers implements or dumbbells that go heavy enough?
Anthony Tran, Thanks
Today I walked 1km with 9kg dumbbells in each hand.
Is that ok?
I am new to farmers walk. What is the best type of footwear to use?
Hello Brian, how are u doing?
Hahaha doing awesome, how are you?
Man, Its almost 2am and I need to go to sleep but all I want to do is to pick some heavy shit in my hands and go with it for a walk. People would think that Im some robber or something. I think a better idea would be if I'll do it tomorrow morning. Peace
Hahaha yea man, maybe wait until morning!
mate on what body part day can I incoprate this exercise in my workout routine? I wanna look half as good as u do
They usually work well after your deadlift my friend!
hei BRIAN, what do you think about ''intermediate fasting'' for strongman
I like it. It definitely helps some people make weight.
"IT'S A TRAP!”
Hahaha!
Don't you mean Fred Flintstone? You look like Barney though. 🤣🤣🤣
Great joke
Hey brian, Im currently lifting at a commercial gym and we only have dumbbells. Is it okay to strap up to make sure im getting a longer carry or just carry till my grip dies.
great video brother! now I need farmer's handles as well as a loadable log. dammit!
It is hard when you don't have the tools to do the work you want to do brother, I was in the same boat not that long ago!
For a cheap alternative I filled two 5-gallon buckets with 45lbs of concrete each, then added whatever weights I could fit in the bucket. 25's fit nicely. I was able to get about 130lbs in there before running out of weight. It's not perfect, but it'll do until you can get some handles.
Way to get it done brother!
Nice, I love farmer walks. Just today I picked up 550lbs just to see if I could do it, could I walk with it? Hell no, but I still picked it up!
Which is better farmer walks with trap bar or farmer carries like the one he's using?
