chair umpire rules on matters of fact as to what happened. Supoervisor or referee can rule on interpretations of rules but not what happened. My bet is players don't know that as I have found players rarely know all the rules.

@ your problem is you expect people to be perfect. If they were then you would never get past the first point in a tennis game as nobody would make a mistake or be in the wrong spot. We seem to be far more forgiving on players who don't know the rules as demonstrated by this video where they argue endlessly when even the rules say once a player argues the officials are not allowed to change their decision.

Here’s a rule to live by if you’re a chair umpire: never overrule a call. You have dedicated line judges on every single line, and there’s Hawkeye. Nobody is ever mad at the chair when a line judge messes up. Overruling is all risk, zero reward

    • @ChrisThorne19
      @ChrisThorne19 2 года назад

@petar pavic It makes sense for people to have that attitude (not saying their arguments make sense) since so much money is on the line. You should always overrule if you know 100% you're right. You can file grievances on the back of overturned calls through the ATP if you're a player, not sure about WTA. If a grievance has been filed on you then you need to be extra cautious, let the linesman and hawkeye do the job for you there. They won't get their loss of earnings given to them so players aren't happy with that resolution, they want to argue it out and influence them before the match is over and money is lost. Even if it only works 1 time out of the 200 like "sorry, 2nd serve"

The underhand serve is tacky if you are winning and doing it to be an asshole. If you are losing, it is a good tactic to get a point. Hingis was down 3 games in this set, I would have done the same thing. She need to win this set to win the match. People can say the underhand serve is unsportspersonlike all they want. They're wong. Here we go with my views on every single one that no one asked for:
    20. The call was bad but Wozniacki was worse
    19. The ball was out. I get that the call should be the point for Li Na, but she should've just let them replay the point. It was so clearly out that she should feel lucky to get the chance to replay.
    18. I think Serena is dramatic and whiny but everything she did was completely justified here.
    17. How did Kirilenko think she would get away with that? The umpire was great especially since she was almost sassy. Love it.
    16. Jankovic and Serena are both annoying. If Serena was taking forever, I get it. Jankovic does NOT have to wait until anyone is ready, but could've been obnoxious depending on the context. Serena is objectively wrong though.
    15. Jankovic deserved another first serve. I feel bad for umpire though.
    14. That call was TERRIBLE and I'm pretty sure the other team was lying about "not knowing."
    13. It's hard to tell. I think Sharapova may have actually been confused. However, she's a cheater so I'm thrilled she got screwed over.
    12. She knew she was lying. She was acting SO guilty.
    11. Serena took absurdly long and Jankovic had every right to be pissed. I wouldn't be surprised if Serena did it on purpose. I actually disagree with the commentator completely.
    10. There's no way to tell. Supervisors never do anything though.
    9. I think the guy called out barely after Wozniacki made contact. However, remember what I said about Sharapova and cheating. It sucks that Wozniacki was out of challenges, but that's how tennis works. The whole thing was very unfortunate.
    8. I cannot believe that call was make. The linesman was probably so taken aback.
    7. Her ball was out and she threw a fit for no reason.
    6. It was so clearly out. Wozniacki was ridiculous to not give Azarenka the point even thought it would set up set point. Asking for a first serve after that is insanely bitchy. I don't care that she is technically right.
    5. Serena needs attention. She chooses to be disgusting for no reason. She ruined the biggest moment of Naomi's life and Naomi can never get it back. Serena should be ashamed for the rest of her life. The fact that people PRAISED Serena for "standing up to men" is pathetic. This should've been second on the list.
    4. It's legal but shouldn't be. I immediately get upset with players when they do this. It's a little better considering she was so young? Also, Graf definitely knew the rules. She acted like underhand serving wasn't legal. The crowd was also justified but I almost feel bad for Hingis.
    3. Showing the mark isn't necessary, but the line judge was wrong. It was super far in. Not sure why the umpire didn't overrule it when she knew it was out. Sakkari probably had no clue if it was in or out, but it was very unfair for her to win.
    2. Ostapenko didn't seem to give a shit as long as she wasn't disqualified. She absolutely should've been. Broady only fought for the disqualification so she would win even though it would be fair to argue as a neutral person watching.
    1. Classic Serena. Being a bitch and then lying and suddenly playing the victim is just her brand. I'm happy the linesperson just kind of sat there without acting intimidated and then went straight to the umpire. I think some of what Serena originally said got lost in translation, but the message was the same.
    Tada
