  • Can Marty Friedman still play his own solo? In this video, we'll find out as we watch the Megadeth Reunion show at the Budokan, in Tokyo Japan. One quarter century after leaving Megadeth in Dave Mustaine's fold, will Marty be able summon his blinding chops from back in the day? Kiko Loureiro has been managing shred lord duties in recent times. It's time to see if the original composer of the greatest metal guitar solo can still shred. Up your chops and music theory skills with my full course below muhahaha

The version of the solo that he is performing is his solo career version, you can hear the recorded version in his solo album Future Addict.
I grew up as a kid learning Marty's solos both his Megadeth days after leaning his Japan solo career stuff I find that Marty's later playing style has evolved to a more smoother style as contrasted to his more angular 'metal' days and this version reflects that.
In this version he has added more notes in between to serve the purpose of bridging the next phrase more smoothly creating a sort of flow, though in this live performance he's playing a 22 fret guitar so he does not perform the beginning of the WTF lick instead bending through the first 24 fretted few notes.
I prefer the future addict version, it feels very 'Marty' if you know what I mean.

I agree that although he kept playing this solo over the years with his band, doing it together with MEGADETH and their huge audience in Japan means pressure. They showed great chemistry and he was feeling it … Expressing with his playing, facial and body language. I did feel it too, felt very happy to experience this even just on a screen. How did you even know of those gigs? The Astoria was my favourite gig venue and alongside places like Nottingham's Rock City was a staple for any UK touring band to play a decent sized London gig.
I'm pretty sure they did two gigs there in 1997, July and October one of which was definitely for Cryptic Writings. I miss that joint, and that Megadeth lineup. R.I.P. Nick Menza.

I'm liking the hat. Been watching some of Marty's own band's material. It rocks. Also, just noticed he's on tour this year. Is his guitar player the guy that played with Ratt? They look a lot a like. Guess I could look it up myself. Took the time a couple years ago to look up Pearcy when all the videos surfaced of him being wasted & unable to sing. Noticed his younger guitar player then. I've always liked Marty's playing. He also still looks great for almost being eligible for Medicare or whatever it is they have in Japan. He comes across as a genuine nice guy. Did you see those sweets he gave the guys? Okay, I'm drifting off topic.
You know, I would like to learn music theory. @ 1:50 love how you explained that. It is like speaking words. It's communication. Bravo! It really is how we process & express. We're all made differently. That's why everyone plays differently & when you're one of the greats, you really stand out. Have you ever shared your fav guitarists? Have often said I like Alternative to Zydeco. Good music is good music & doesn't have to be associated with a specific genre. Probably like many others, what I'm listening to changes all the time.

He skips the satanic stretch at the top of the mountain run. But he did that after 1991 also.
It’s a ridiculous balance of fret hopping while also grabbing the entire 6 feet span sitting down.
His earliest executions of the fabled omitted note of the album recording version, the 10/17 span occurred when the Kelly sat higher in his torso and he was less stage action motivated.
His pinky would have penetrated the lowest inferno and touched the 17th fret while anchored on fret ten had he rode his gun higher on the belt. He crushed it and we know he’d have it if he was a nipple picker.
He skipped the 17/10 but on purpose.
