This was brilliant, and so useful. Loved all the variations and ideas. Keep up the good work. A thousand things to do with a poncho tarp, and a 1,001 if you wear it! Great.
Thanks Nigel, really appreciate the comment. Took me several days to plan, film and edit this one, great to know when someone has found it helpful and makes my day.👍
Very creative! The only way I will use a poncho for shelter would be in an emergency or fly it over my backpacking tent in order to have the space to use my camp chair and cook a meal with one of my stoves. Getting up and down on the ground is much more of a challenge after what I put my body through with 20 years in the military! When I go down to the ground in order to climb into my backpacking tent, I plan to sleep there for the night and face the challenge of getting back up in the morning or for a pee!😂 Being 63, I have to have a real good reason to throw myself down to the ground and get back up anymore!😅 It’s just not that fun anymore. You have some great configurations to chose from there. Thank you!😊
I like plenty of variety with my camping, and enjoy sharing what I learn along the way. Sleeping under your coat is not everyone`s idea of fun, especially if you have had to do it professionally but a good skill to have for an emergency. Am 63 also and agree, getting back to vertical gets more of a challenge as time goes by. 😁
Some cracking set up ideas. The floor less Gunyah and the Holden set ups are something I'll be trying, just goes to show what can be accomplished with a relatively small tarp. Great video.
I completed the Appalachian trail last year. On my trip the only rain gear I carried was an umbrella I got for $5 at Walmart. From GA to Maine that umbrella kept me dryer than anyone else on the trail except for one downpour in VA. It was so hard that it splashed off the leaves and stone until the air was saturated in Three minutes or less
This is an excellent resource for tarp setup inspiration -- nice one, Mark! Massive congrats on 1K subs, too. You've earned it! 🍻🙌🎉 I like "Freestanding Mushroom Fly" as a name more than "Alpha Tent", hahaha
Everyone calls it an Alpha Tent so better not go against convention, might upset people 😁. It`s not very descriptive though and yours makes more sense.👍. I hope this one becomes a resource that people re-visit for ideas, that was the concept really to inspire a few campers to try out something different. 1k, was a bit of a slog but first goal accomplished. Thanks for your support and look forward to congratulating you to 1k before long.👍
Thank you for this great video. The variation for setting up a poncho are almost endless. Only 1 little correction this is a Dutch army poncho. Speaking as a Dutch men myself.
Thank you, put a lot of effort into making this one. Did buy it as a Belgian poncho from an army surplus seller, but have come to realize it is the same as the Dutch army use. Do both armies use some of the same kit or was it just miss identified? Love it regardless, very adaptable piece of gear.
@@mark.a.cornish Thanks for your response. Your did make a great video, i really like it a lot of new inspiration and ideas. I think they just mislabeled it. So a little story time The Netherlands starting issuing new kit in 1993 what was basicly a copy of the US sleep systeem including the poncho some small changes where maked but the principle Remained the same. I now that your poncho is dutch because of the camouflage pattern this is Dutch dpm camouflage. Belgian used jigsaw pattern camouflage.
@@mark.a.cornish they call this area the Forest of Bowland but there's not many trees about just big hills and moorland. But it's spectacular in all weather especially snow.
Apparently the term forest in this instance means a hunting ground or park for a king or noble - nowt to do wi' trees. I have a new plan for wet days - a CAR - and massive tarp i can attach to the car that gives a lot of space and a space for a stove. but yes, for small camps a tarp in plough to a tree. Have a good un lad.
Must have been a lot of work setting up 25 tarp configuration. Video not drawn out, but short and sweet, the most important things (~ 1 min / set up). Great job!
0:25 pretty sure thats either a dutch or a british poncho by the looks of the camo pattern. i believe the belgians have a weird kinda orange colour pattern. either way, i swear by poncho tent setups. super lightweight and you keep as dry or often more dry than tents, especially when looking at similar price range tents lol... and i wouldnt want to walk around in a tent folded around me as a rainjacket, another win for the poncho!
15:40 the modified A frame is by far the best one,is pretty much a replacement for both a bivvy an a camping tent, now i would really like to see a mosquito net mod to go with it,you should make a video on that, greetings
I’m almost 63, I forget your age Mark, don’t remember things since my stroke 2 years ago, hey it could be worse, you gotta be close to my age , seems maybe your a bit older than me, anyway your inspiring to me, I’m go. A get in shape and do some camping, cheers Mark from Oklahoma😊
Really happy to have spurred you on and get out into the country side, enjoy your adventures. Almost 64 so have about a year on you, double bypass for me! The sands of time are running low and need to get fit and make the most of it. 😄
Thanks. Had lots of comments about the smock so dug into my purchase history and made you a link for it. I might make a few pence if you purchase as its an affiliate link, but its a very tough smock: geni.us/tpeH 👍
Yep if you like crawling on the ground use a poncho me I’m carrying at least a 3 by 3 meter mostly a 10 by 12 foot tarp. At over 60 and retired military I’ve switched to hammocks or cots mostly anyway…Have fun stay safe.
Hey Mark, just wanted to say thank you for subbing, im also now one of yours. im looking forward to binge watching your work..Tank
Thanks, appreciate it, hope you find some of my stuff interesting😄👍
The encyclopedia of poncho shelters! Nicely done. 👍
Thanks, covered all the set ups I know off, deeper dive into each one to follow.👍
I'd just like to say all your effort and time is appreciated. Great job!
Thank you

Thank you, this vid took a lot of effort to make, so nice to hear the effort is appreciated. 👍
What a nice video
thanks, hope it was useful. 👍
Good job, Mark!
Many thanks and congrats from Kyiv, UA!
Thanks, appreciate it.👍
Wonderful video! I'll be trying the floor less Gunya tomorrow. Really like that pitch.
Would be interesting to hear what you think of that pitch after you try it. Thanks for taking a look. 👍
Plough point and lean to are defo my favourites 👍🏾
Easy and effective, they are most peoples favourites for good reason. Thanks for taking a look. 👍

It`s an under rated piece of gear for sure. Thanks for watching and congratulations on completing that iconic trail. 👏👍
Loved this video. Learned a lot. Loved the two modefied A-frames. Love configurations fore windy and rainy conditions.

@@jp-un3fy Thanks for clearing that up, have seen the jigsaw pattern on kit, makes sense now. Will get it right in my next video about it.😁👍
Going to try some of these.😊

Hello Mark! We have been sharing ideas on Facebook. Glad I found your channel. Came over to sub and support. I enjoy exchanging ideas.
Thanks Danny, and welcome to the channel
Best video on the subject. Subbed!
Wow! Thank you. 👍
Eh up Mark- all good. We only get horizontal rain here.
Time to get into the woods when the rain goes horizontal, and hope a tree doesn`t fall on you😄

I prefer the flying version but we all have different preferences and needs. The net mod would be interesting, very claustrophobic though 👍
Nice set up Mark, trying hard to work out where you are in the Shire, presumably in the Vale? 😁
Yep, in the vale of the shire. Pleased to hear you enjoyed this one👍

Use an actual military issue size poncho... the imported copies are generally too small to be an effective shelter. Very good presentation.
Thanks for the info, bought this used from military surplus supplier and believe it is genuine. What size is the actual military issue poncho please?
@@mark.a.cornishthat is the correct size.
Just stumbled onto your videos. At last a proper accent!, I’m just down the road from you. Nice work 👍🏻
Thanks. It is a little sad that the accents are gradually dying out. Used to be able to tell which village locals were from. 😂
@@mark.a.cornish I could tell you were local to me straight away. I’m very proud of the shire.
