AliExpress provided this SJCAM SJ4000 that is currently on sale for $40 on their back to school sale... so I decided to test it against a MUCH more expensive camera. Does it win? Well, watch the video.

The newer GoPro's image quality and stabilization is really great.
My second action camera was an SJ4000. It was fine... The audio was terrible, but it was pretty reliable. GoPro crashes all the time so sometimes you miss an important moment. I believe you can find modified firmware for the SJCAM too
great video idea logan! im thinking of buying one of these action cams to capture footage while im doing ebike delivery. Did not even know there were other options besides go pro.

Was considering a GoPro for the summer just to toy around with, but some fresh reviews had me backing off
There's no way I would have gotten the moneys worth out of it. A sub 100$ thingie though, comes with more grounded expectations.
The biggest problem I hear over and over about GoPro is that they "over-heat" to easily! That's a turnoff for me. But the SJCAM produces horrible results.
They are engineered with the assumption of having some damn airflow. It's an action cam
Turning off the stabilization when unnecessary helps a lot. In addition to lowering framerate or resolution

Alternative: "Cerastes 5k Wifi Anti-Shake-Action-Kamera", costs 50 Euros, and from what I've seen the stabilization and quality is much better. A bundle with a 64 Gig memory card costs 54,09€
Picking one up, been wanting an action cam for quite awhile but hiking trip in Washington pushed me to grab one and at a steep discount compared to GoPro
I've had 3 GoPro fail, with light use. I do not know what to get for the 4th time. I can't rely on GoPro.

i guess if u have at least a 350 bucks smartphone current gen or last gen, u can skip the sjcam. yeah i know the formfactor is something u maybe wanted then its okay i guess but from a video quality its not that good. okay, if u not have a 350 bucks smartphone and wanted something for recording... this is better than nothing. but thats just my point of view.
beware of all the sjcam fakes, only buy from sjcam
It depends on the shot you want and the budget you have, If you are starting off or just want to put a camera in a dangerous place,. Then a cheap $50 camera makes more sense than risking a $400 investment. But for professionals, they may use a GoPro as that cheap camera to get the shot, rather than a production camera, which is over 8k in cost. I run a GoPro 11 on most of my ebike adventures, but something to watch out for is that if you shoot at 4K, the camera can overheat in the summer. I have had it shut down 3 times while shooting. Nothing sucks more than risking your life for a shot, and it turns out your camera turned off 20 minutes ago.
I am a "Pro", but not in a photographer sense. I capture 5k video with GNSS data simultaneously for photogrammetry. This results in impressively detailed point clouds of streets. I can draw entire street plans in days. It used to take weeks or months through the conventional methods (total station). Anyways, the overheating issue is real. Whenever it's 30C outisde, I am worried. There's nothing worse than wasting a day of work in the field because the equipment overheated and the video was cut short. The 300€ price of a GoPro 11 on sale is worth it IMHO. You get a lot for your money.
