oh wow this was really helpful! i wanted to learn more about him since there’s a Yakuza (Ryu Ga Gotoku) spin off game with him as the protagonist! hearing about his story makes the choice make so much sense! the whole idea of leaving the clan and dealing with changing political tides - that’s the RGG story. now we need a video on the other characters in the same 🤣
Fun fact is that in the game, sakamoto's other name was saitou hajime, the third division captain of the shinsengumi. But historically, Saitou and Sakamoto were totally different people.
Fun fact, Sakamoto Ryoma is the inspiration for Sakamoto in Gintama, and the Ryo at the end of his name means dragon, just like the Tatsu in the Gintama Sakamoto.
Also another theory on his assassination was carried out by the Mimawarigumi leader Sasaki Tadasaburo and Imai Noburo, and they blamed Shinsengumi leader Kondo Isami, only to admit they killed him later

From what I read in the book: "Samurai Revolution" by Romulus Hillsborough, Ryoma also carried a revolver (a Smith & Wesson to be more precise) because he believed that it saved him from a previous assassonation attempt.

After being introduced from the West, Japan mass-produced guns on its own. At the end of the Sengoku period, Japan owned 500,000 It was the country with the largest gun ownership at the time.
there's an interesting story about this man. If I recall correctly, he always carried a pistol so that he could protect himself when being attacked. However, one day, he wasn't carrying a pistol, but instead he was carrying a book. When his subordinates asked him why was that, he answered that while carrying a pistol may help me to defend myself, reading a book may weaponize myself to defend myself.

Practically a decade ago from now I took a college course on modern Japanese history and learned about Sakamoto Ryoma and read a book about him for class, and he is also one of my main favorite Japanese historical person.

He definitely is one of the greatest reasons that the Meiji Restoration happened successfully, even though he was never considered one of the Three Great Nobles of it. I actually never heard of this dude and have a very big interest in both history and historical figures, and have a great love of popular historical Japanese people. Actually, I think Himiko got super popular last year because of Fate's GudaGuda event that brought her into the game. She also broke a few sales records in jp due to that event.

Really nice video. Funny, I first heard about Sakamoto Ryoma after watching "Girls und Panzer". In this anime there are four reki-jo, girls who love history and like dress up as their favourite historical figure. One of them is named after Narasaki Ryo, who worked at the Teradaya Inn in Kyoto, and warned Sakamoto Ryoma when she noticed some assasins coming to kill him. Sakamoto survived and they both got married.

The story of Sakamoto Ryoma must have inspired the Ryu Ga Gotoku studio to make Ryu Ga Gotoku Ishin, featuring a character that has a name named Sakamoto Ryoma, with many similarities in the game! Although the game never went outside of Japan, it would've gained more interest overseas to learn more about Sakamoto Ryoma.
Ryu Ga Gotoku Ishin is an adaptaion of what Sakamoto Ryoma went through IRL. It's just natural that there are lots of similarities. The same applies to Miyamoto Musashi(Ryu Ga Gotoku Kenzan).
I was thinking about the same. Although in game, Sakamoto and saitou has shown as the same person playing both people's role, while historically, they're different people who played two different roles. So, I think both sakamoto ryoma and saitou hajime are inspiration for ryu ga gotoku.
All Japanese people know that when they play That's how famous Shinsengumi and Ryoma Sakamoto are. It's like having ryu ga gotoku characters cast in a Shinsengumi movie. Japanese people see it that way.

The first ime I heard about him was thanks to Fate Grand Order, he is a very lovely character alongside his wife Oryou, it is safe to say that both are my favorite couple in FGO and I do love to know their stories.

I first learned about Ryoma Sakamoto from the Super Famicom game Live A Live after it got a fan made English translation patch. It's so cool that you did this video so close to the announcement of a full Live A Live remake that's going to have an international release, maybe this game will get more people outside Japan to discover Ryoma like I did.
I must also add that Ryomaden was one of the best J Drama I have watched and I had watched hundreds J Dramas at least. I literally cried my eyes out at the last episode when Iwasaki Yataro (Teruyuki Kagawa) confessed how Ryoma had influenced him throughout their long friendship after Ryoma was assassinated. It was then I became a fan of Kagawa.
i first learned about him from the Game touken ranbu which has Ryoma's famous Sword Mutsunokami Yoshiyuki personified. it's cool to learn more about him not mentioned in the game or anime series here. thank you for the video.

Sakamoto Ryoma is actually the reason I really want to visit Shikoku and especially the Sakamoto Ryoma museum in Kochi prefecture. I'd also love to do the Shikoku temple pilgrimage one day so I can enjoy the natural landscapes there.
I lived in Japan for seven years in the late 70s and early 80s trying to learn as much as I could about pre-20th century Japan from people as well as books but had never heard of Sakamoto Ryoma. I thoroughly enjoyed watching the NHK Taiga Drama "Ryomaden" when it debuted several years ago. It would be interesting to ponder what course Japanese history would have taken had he not been assassinated.

Respect to Sakamoto Ryoma. Thanks for explaining who he was to me. Seriously, I agree! He should be more well known outside Japan. A contemporary of history and a patriot. The man was a reformer but a devout Nationalist and those two things immediately make me respect and admire him. He was opposed to feudalism and advocated for Japanese social, cultural and political modernization while still retaining their cultural values. He admired western values (especially economic and political) while also maintaining his love of Japanese culture and heritage.

Definitely my favourite person from Japanese history! There is a great NHK tv series about him called Ryoma-den for those who are interested 👌 When I was a Japanese student in Kyoto there was a huge exhibition in Kyoto with all the letters and personal belongings of Sakamoto Ryoma on display along with the bloody kimono he was wearing on the night of his assassination. It was such an amazing exhibition!
Sakamoto Ryoma is also famous in video games as well such as FGO or Fate/Grand Order as there are 2 version of servant such as the 4 star rider and the 5 star lancer version of him.

Sometimes the fact that there was a time window where a Samurai could have carried a Colt or Smith and Wesson kinda breaks my mind a little.

Actually, I think Himiko got super popular last year because of Fate's GudaGuda event that brought her into the game. She also broke a few sales records in jp due to that event.

Really nice video. Funny, I first heard about Sakamoto Ryoma after watching "Girls und Panzer".
In this anime there are four reki-jo, girls who love history and like dress up as their favourite historical figure.
One of them is named after Narasaki Ryo, who worked at the Teradaya Inn in Kyoto,
and warned Sakamoto Ryoma when she noticed some assasins coming to kill him.
Sakamoto survived and they both got married.

The story of Sakamoto Ryoma must have inspired the Ryu Ga Gotoku studio to make Ryu Ga Gotoku Ishin, featuring a character that has a name named Sakamoto Ryoma, with many similarities in the game! Although the game never went outside of Japan, it would've gained more interest overseas to learn more about Sakamoto Ryoma.
Probably, Ryoma (dragon horse) is a pretty unique name.
Ryu Ga Gotoku Ishin is an adaptaion of what Sakamoto Ryoma went through IRL. It's just natural that there are lots of similarities.
The same applies to Miyamoto Musashi(Ryu Ga Gotoku Kenzan).
I was thinking about the same. Although in game, Sakamoto and saitou has shown as the same person playing both people's role, while historically, they're different people who played two different roles. So, I think both sakamoto ryoma and saitou hajime are inspiration for ryu ga gotoku.

It's like having ryu ga gotoku characters cast in a Shinsengumi movie. Japanese people see it that way.

The first ime I heard about him was thanks to Fate Grand Order, he is a very lovely character alongside his wife Oryou, it is safe to say that both are my favorite couple in FGO and I do love to know their stories.

I first learned about Ryoma Sakamoto from the Super Famicom game Live A Live after it got a fan made English translation patch. It's so cool that you did this video so close to the announcement of a full Live A Live remake that's going to have an international release, maybe this game will get more people outside Japan to discover Ryoma like I did.

I must also add that Ryomaden was one of the best J Drama I have watched and I had watched hundreds J Dramas at least. I literally cried my eyes out at the last episode when Iwasaki Yataro (Teruyuki Kagawa) confessed how Ryoma had influenced him throughout their long friendship after Ryoma was assassinated. It was then I became a fan of Kagawa.
i first learned about him from the Game touken ranbu which has Ryoma's famous Sword Mutsunokami Yoshiyuki personified. it's cool to learn more about him not mentioned in the game or anime series here.

Sakamoto Ryoma is actually the reason I really want to visit Shikoku and especially the Sakamoto Ryoma museum in Kochi prefecture. I lived in Japan for seven years in the late 70s and early 80s trying to learn as much as I could about pre-20th century Japan from people as well as books but had never heard of Sakamoto Ryoma. I thoroughly enjoyed watching the NHK Taiga Drama "Ryomaden" when it debuted several years ago. It would be interesting to ponder what course Japanese history would have taken had he not been assassinated.
I love that you recommend to speed up the video speed at the beginning of the video. Although, personality, i prefer your natural speed and cadence. It's great that you let people feel ok speeding up the video of they feel it's necessary.

Respect to Sakamoto Ryoma. Thanks for explaining who he was to me. Seriously, I agree! He should be more well known outside Japan. A contemporary of history and a patriot. The man was a reformer but a devout Nationalist and those two things immediately make me respect and admire him. He was opposed to feudalism and advocated for Japanese social, cultural and political modernization while still retaining their cultural values. He admired western values (especially economic and political) while also maintaining his love of Japanese culture and heritage.

Sanada Yukimura, I became fascinated with him when you can play his storyline in the first Samurai Warriors game.
Sada Keiji did an awesome job portraying him in a small but memorable role in Ansatsu (1964). Its arguably my favorite film ever

When I was a Japanese student in Kyoto there was a huge exhibition in Kyoto with all the letters and personal belongings of Sakamoto Ryoma on display along with the bloody kimono he was wearing on the night of his assassination. It was such an amazing exhibition!
Sakamoto Ryoma is also famous in video games as well such as FGO or Fate/Grand Order as there are 2 version of servant such as the 4 star rider and the 5 star lancer version of him.
