Fun fact is that in the game, sakamoto's other name was saitou hajime, the third division captain of the shinsengumi. But historically, Saitou and Sakamoto were totally different people.
Fun fact, Sakamoto Ryoma is the inspiration for Sakamoto in Gintama, and the Ryo at the end of his name means dragon, just like the Tatsu in the Gintama Sakamoto.
Also another theory on his assassination was carried out by the Mimawarigumi leader Sasaki Tadasaburo and Imai Noburo, and they blamed Shinsengumi leader Kondo Isami, only to admit they killed him later
My mother-in-law is Japanese and she is from Kochi, she told me their family is related to Sakamoto Ryouma. She is very proud of it so I wanted to learn more about him. Thanks for the video!
I know it sounds like I'm insincere, but I really think that's cool. Most of us are just the descendants of farmers, or something else equally as boring.
Is it true there are 5 different Kamon for the Sakamoto Han? I'm watching the NHK Taiga drama Ryomaden and Ryoma Sama wa smentiones to wear a formal hakama with them.
@WareforCoin your ancestors made it possible for those of higher status to survive, farmers have always been the most important part of civilization, not boring at all
Apparently my mothers side is also related to Sakamoto Ryoma. I'm not sure if I believe my grandmother (Japanese side) but they don't like to talk about it and try to keep it a secret
From what I read in the book: "Samurai Revolution" by Romulus Hillsborough, Ryoma also carried a revolver (a Smith & Wesson to be more precise) because he believed that it saved him from a previous assassonation attempt.
@@stoopid136 well that time window was also for quite a long time. There so many documents and images of samurai with guns and rifles well before the bakumatsu.
After being introduced from the West, Japan mass-produced guns on its own. At the end of the Sengoku period, Japan owned 500,000 It was the country with the largest gun ownership at the time.
there's an interesting story about this man. If I recall correctly, he always carried a pistol so that he could protect himself when being attacked. However, one day, he wasn't carrying a pistol, but instead he was carrying a book. When his subordinates asked him why was that, he answered that while carrying a pistol may help me to defend myself, reading a book may weaponize myself to defend myself.
I always hated history in school, it's nice to catch up on these subjects later with how interesting it actually is. I never heard of Sakamoto Ryoma, but now I did and I glad
Sakamoto Ryōma also scaped an assassination attempt a year before his actual death thanks to Narasaki Ryō who overheard the assassins outside the inn where she worked and Ryōma was staying the night. They scaped together and visited many hotsprings in Kagoshima prefecture that were believed to have healing properties and it is considered to be Japan's first honeymoon. They married afterwards.
Practically a decade ago from now I took a college course on modern Japanese history and learned about Sakamoto Ryoma and read a book about him for class, and he is also one of my main favorite Japanese historical person.
I'm so happy to see a video about Ryoma! I've known and read all about him after learning about the version of him in Gintama. He definitely is one of the greatest reasons that the Meiji Restoration happened successfully, even though he was never considered one of the Three Great Nobles of it. Speaking of which, any interest on doing one on Katsura Kogorō? Keep up the great work as always!
I actually never heard of this dude and have a very big interest in both history and historical figures, and have a great love of popular historical Japanese people. If you want to talk Japanese History with a global audience, I am totally down for this and would very much like to see you get around to the following people eventually; Ishikawa Goemon, Gozen Tomoe, Musashibo Benkei, Minamotos Yoshitsune, Yoritomo, Yoshinaka, and Yorimitsu, Oda Nobunaga, Masamune Date, Amakusa Shiro, Yagyu Jubei, and the blacksmiths Masamune and Muramasa.
Came for Tatsuma, stayed for Ryoma san. I wanted to know more about Sakamoto Ryoma only because of my love/crush for Sakamoto Tatsuma from Gintama. Im in love with his humble yet strong personality and hilarious laughter Edit : thanks for the video, Shogo san!
Actually, I think Himiko got super popular last year because of Fate's GudaGuda event that brought her into the game. She also broke a few sales records in jp due to that event.
I love the Bakumatsu period in Japan, and love love love it's history! I especially always found Sakamoto Ryoma to be really interesting, so I'm really happy to see this video! Thank you Shogo!
Really nice video. Funny, I first heard about Sakamoto Ryoma after watching "Girls und Panzer". In this anime there are four reki-jo, girls who love history and like dress up as their favourite historical figure. One of them is named after Narasaki Ryo, who worked at the Teradaya Inn in Kyoto, and warned Sakamoto Ryoma when she noticed some assasins coming to kill him. Sakamoto survived and they both got married.
Thank you for this video! I came here to study him not because of any game or anime but we share the same last name, Sakamoto. Now I am really proud of it
The story of Sakamoto Ryoma must have inspired the Ryu Ga Gotoku studio to make Ryu Ga Gotoku Ishin, featuring a character that has a name named Sakamoto Ryoma, with many similarities in the game! Although the game never went outside of Japan, it would've gained more interest overseas to learn more about Sakamoto Ryoma.
Ryu Ga Gotoku Ishin is an adaptaion of what Sakamoto Ryoma went through IRL. It's just natural that there are lots of similarities. The same applies to Miyamoto Musashi(Ryu Ga Gotoku Kenzan).
I was thinking about the same. Although in game, Sakamoto and saitou has shown as the same person playing both people's role, while historically, they're different people who played two different roles. So, I think both sakamoto ryoma and saitou hajime are inspiration for ryu ga gotoku.
All Japanese people know that when they play That's how famous Shinsengumi and Ryoma Sakamoto are. It's like having ryu ga gotoku characters cast in a Shinsengumi movie. Japanese people see it that way.
I love your videos Shogo. As a long time sumo fan I had dreamed of coming to Japan. With your videos it has taught me so much of your people and culture. Thank you Shogo.
Thanks for the informative video! I first learned about him from fate grand order and it prompted me to look him up but google still left me confused, this video made it much clearer.
The first ime I heard about him was thanks to Fate Grand Order, he is a very lovely character alongside his wife Oryou, it is safe to say that both are my favorite couple in FGO and I do love to know their stories.
Loved this vid! I love learning about Japanese historical figures 🤩 i would love to hear about some famous female warriors like Gozen Tomoe, Gozen Hangaku, empress Jingu etc 🥰❤ love love love your vids and content. Keep up the amazing work! ❤❤
I first learned about Ryoma Sakamoto from the Super Famicom game Live A Live after it got a fan made English translation patch. It's so cool that you did this video so close to the announcement of a full Live A Live remake that's going to have an international release, maybe this game will get more people outside Japan to discover Ryoma like I did.
I must also add that Ryomaden was one of the best J Drama I have watched and I had watched hundreds J Dramas at least. I literally cried my eyes out at the last episode when Iwasaki Yataro (Teruyuki Kagawa) confessed how Ryoma had influenced him throughout their long friendship after Ryoma was assassinated. It was then I became a fan of Kagawa.
i first learned about him from the Game touken ranbu which has Ryoma's famous Sword Mutsunokami Yoshiyuki personified. it's cool to learn more about him not mentioned in the game or anime series here. thank you for the video.
Thank you for all of your hard work and such informational and interesting videos! I greatly enjoy and look forward to them! I am excited to hear you are considering a video on Sengoku warlords! I have been interested in that particular period of Japanese history since my middle school days (I am a working professional now). I apologize in advance for the many suggestions I have for your consideration on future videos: Sanada Yukimura/Sanada Nobushige, Masamune Date, Goro Masamune, Sengo Muramasa, and Lady Murasaki Shikibu. I hope you will consider them! Much appreciation and admiration from the USA!
I forced all the gulag residents to subscribe him......turns out all of them had already done it a long time ago......they also turned out to be big fans........so i forced them to make an extra account and then subscribe him again....
Thank you so much for making a video on my favourite historical person from Japan! Sakamoto Ryoma is actually the reason I really want to visit Shikoku and especially the Sakamoto Ryoma museum in Kochi prefecture. I'd also love to do the Shikoku temple pilgrimage one day so I can enjoy the natural landscapes there.
I lived in Japan for seven years in the late 70s and early 80s trying to learn as much as I could about pre-20th century Japan from people as well as books but had never heard of Sakamoto Ryoma. I thoroughly enjoyed watching the NHK Taiga Drama "Ryomaden" when it debuted several years ago. It would be interesting to ponder what course Japanese history would have taken had he not been assassinated.
I love that you recommend to speed up the video speed at the beginning of the video. Although, personality, i prefer your natural speed and cadence. It's great that you let people feel ok speeding up the video of they feel it's necessary.
Very interesting - and cool! I knew about him but not that much, so that was a very nice way to learn more! I love your videos about history, thanks for sharing!
Respect to Sakamoto Ryoma. Thanks for explaining who he was to me. Seriously, I agree! He should be more well known outside Japan. A contemporary of history and a patriot. The man was a reformer but a devout Nationalist and those two things immediately make me respect and admire him. He was opposed to feudalism and advocated for Japanese social, cultural and political modernization while still retaining their cultural values. He admired western values (especially economic and political) while also maintaining his love of Japanese culture and heritage.
Thank you for your videos that provide many insights into the history of Japan. I would appreciate a video about the famous swordsman and zen master,Yamoaka Tesshu.
Came here from another video that explains the similarities and differences between Sakamoto ryoma in real life and Sakamoto of like a dragon ishin. But this video gives me more an insight into the real life ryoma Sakamoto great video man
First of all, thank you for your informative videos. They are done very well. Second, I have not watched your videos in a while, and the last time I watched them, you had half a million subscribers, and now you are you have over 800k !! Congrats on your success!! I have a lot of videos to watch now to catch up !!
Thanks so much for your work on these videos, I've recently become a fan! :D I especially enjoy these historical figure-based videos. You may have done so already, but I would love to see a video like this one about Sakamoto Takamori if you have the time and interest in covering him. I would love to see you cover other prominent Samurai from Japanese history if you ever feel that it's a subject worth turning into a series. I hope that you and your family are doing well in all aspects of life. Thank you again for all that you do and for being the person you are.
Thank you for this video, Shogo! I hope those books about Sakamoto Ryoma will be available in paperback, soon. Looking forward to the next video. Is there are suggested books about the Shinsengumi in paperback, because I've seen reviews where people state that the info is inaccurate.
Great video Shogo. The only thing I pitty a little is: I would have loved to know if the tragic and heartbreaking storys of his childhood where true and if that was the reason why he hated the shogunate and the Daimyō-system so much that he was so determined to destroy ist.
You mentioned Some surveys that say he was the second most popular among highschool student? May I know the source/link of these surveyes? Since I am curious about what the other historical figures popular among highschoolers in Japan are.
Great video. Maybe you could do one on Jigoro Kano. I understand why he is important to judoka, but it is unclear as to why many martial arts groups revere as well--especially sword schools. It might be interesting to others. Thanks for all the info.
Definitely my favourite person from Japanese history! There is a great NHK tv series about him called Ryoma-den for those who are interested 👌 When I was a Japanese student in Kyoto there was a huge exhibition in Kyoto with all the letters and personal belongings of Sakamoto Ryoma on display along with the bloody kimono he was wearing on the night of his assassination. It was such an amazing exhibition!
Sakamoto Ryoma is also famous in video games as well such as FGO or Fate/Grand Order as there are 2 version of servant such as the 4 star rider and the 5 star lancer version of him.
Awesome video and thank you! As a Gintama fan I'd love to see one about Yoshida Shoin or Takasugi Shinsaku especially since I'm not quite if the former truly is the basis for Yoshida Shouyou
I remember knowing about Sakamoto Ryoma (and other Edo historical figures) from watching "JIN". It takes place around the same period of Ryoma's event you talked about in the video. Such a great series
Thank you for this video, I watched a TV series on my roku channel Viki depicting the life of Sakamoro Ryoma and I absolutely loved it. I'm very happy to learn more from your video. Thank you
My french son discovered Japan's culture when he was 7 reading the story of samurai Musashi... this very big book was thr stone and the sword ... he is now 28 and his acces password is Musashi ...
Thank you for your amazing work ❤️ I really like to get to know more about Japanese culture thanks to your quality content 🤓. I hope you can make more videos of this format ☺️💝🎁
Another excellent video.Thank you for all of your hard work to make this incredible history and information accessible to a western English speaking audience. That said, If you would be so kind, I , and I am sure many others, would love to see deep dives into the characters of Sanada Yukimura, Honda Tadakatsu, Oda Nobunaga , Azai Nagamasa etc. But while we are in the Bakamatsu , why not Isami Kondo and perhaps , lesser known, Kawakami Gensai , whom some will know as the inspiration for Himura Kenshin

Sounds like a great heroic adventure tale; that it is the real story of his life is even more amazing. Thanks for this video.
I would be interested to learn more of famous historical figures if they are unknown in the west
Can't wait for the Himiko video since I've never heard of her before!
Very informative and descriptive.
Excellent information source!
... coming from a ryu ga gatoku fan xD
It was then I became a fan of Kagawa.
i first learned about him from the Game touken ranbu which has Ryoma's famous Sword Mutsunokami Yoshiyuki personified. it's cool to learn more about him not mentioned in the game or anime series here.
thank you for the video.
keep them videos coming love watching!!
Me, a foreigner, first knew him as swordman with a revolver. Read about him ever since. He was truly amazing.
Thank you for this! He is my favorite in Fate/Grand Order so I always want to learn more about him.
He’s the 2nd most popular but let’s make SHOGO NUMBER 1!!!
I forced all the gulag residents to subscribe him......turns out all of them had already done it a long time ago......they also turned out to be big fans........so i forced them to make an extra account and then subscribe him again....
My favourites, which I'd love to see videos of, are Sei Shonagon and Ikkyu Sojun.
I learned about him a while ago because he is a character in a game I play but oh boy I never imagined he was so popular overthere.
what game?

Love these topic and history videos! ありがとうございました、しょごさん!
Thank you Gintama for stimulating my interest in Japanese History
I really enjoy your videos. Thank you very much for making them. Do you think you would be able to do one about Yagyu Munenori?
Kenjutsu Musou, Kenzen Ichinyo.
Setsunintou, katsujinken.
I like this format where you say your thank you's and then there's still more contents at the end. It's like watching a marvel movie!
this explanation was detailed and very clear!! I knew about him but I really didn't know how much awesome this man
Can't wait for those other historical figure videos!
Came here from another video that explains the similarities and differences between Sakamoto ryoma in real life and Sakamoto of like a dragon ishin. But this video gives me more an insight into the real life ryoma Sakamoto great video man
Thank you for the video, Shogo. It would be interesting to hear you talking about Yukio Mishima and the Japanese people's view of him today.
omg!! let's goooo!!!!
I also like your enthusiastic voice today! it's obvious that you really like this subject 🤭
Wow wow wow...the legendary Sakamoto Ryoma taking the center stage 😱
More than a warrior or a strategist, a man with a vision for a future, and not just any future, a better one. I liked this video a lot, thanks!
Excellent content, Shogo! 👍🏼👍🏼
First of all, thank you for your informative videos. They are done very well.
Second, I have not watched your videos in a while, and the last time I watched them, you had half a million subscribers, and now you are you have over 800k !! Congrats on your success!! I have a lot of videos to watch now to catch up !!
Makes sense that Kiryu would be Ryoma’s reincarnation
Thanks so much for your work on these videos, I've recently become a fan! :D I especially enjoy these historical figure-based videos. You may have done so already, but I would love to see a video like this one about Sakamoto Takamori if you have the time and interest in covering him.
I would love to see you cover other prominent Samurai from Japanese history if you ever feel that it's a subject worth turning into a series. I hope that you and your family are doing well in all aspects of life. Thank you again for all that you do and for being the person you are.

Thank you Shogo for this vid, Sakamoto Ryoma such a great and important historical figure also Ryōmaden (2010) one of my favorite Taiga drama.
Another great video, very informative! thanks for the upload.
Definitely would like one on the life of Oda Nobunaga
Thank you for this video, Shogo! I hope those books about Sakamoto Ryoma will be available in paperback, soon. Looking forward to the next video. Is there are suggested books about the Shinsengumi in paperback, because I've seen reviews where people state that the info is inaccurate.
Arigato. This is my first video of your channel but I already love it 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
I’ve watched Ryomaden several times since it came out over a decade ago. Everyone should absolutely watch that Taiga Drama.
Sanada Yukimura, I became fascinated with him when you can play his storyline in the first Samurai Warriors game.
Sada Keiji did an awesome job portraying him in a small but memorable role in Ansatsu (1964). Its arguably my favorite film ever
I would LOVE to hear your take on the other influential figures in history!!!!
Great video. Maybe you could do one on Jigoro Kano. I understand why he is important to judoka, but it is unclear as to why many martial arts groups revere as well--especially sword schools. It might be interesting to others. Thanks for all the info.
Historical figures in japan is a fantastic topic, I hope you do more! In also interested in the comedy you mentioned in the afterthoughts.
So informative and engaging! You would make a terrific history teacher, you really had my attention!!! Great content!👍
Thanks for sharing. And nowadays I‘m visiting the same Kendō school 北辰一刀流 that Sakamoto San back then practiced. ❤
I would love to hear You talking about Akechi Mitsuhide and Furuta Oribe.
Great episode by the way, as always.
Definitely my favourite person from Japanese history!
There is a great NHK tv series about him called Ryoma-den for those who are interested 👌
When I was a Japanese student in Kyoto there was a huge exhibition in Kyoto with all the letters and personal belongings of Sakamoto Ryoma on display along with the bloody kimono he was wearing on the night of his assassination.
Thank you
great video. didn't know about ryoma either before this video.
I'm watching this before I play Like a Dragon: Ishin to get more insight on the real life historical events the game is loosely based on

But while we are in the Bakamatsu , why not Isami Kondo and perhaps , lesser known, Kawakami Gensai , whom some will know as the inspiration for Himura Kenshin
ishin gang where y'all at

You’re right, I’ve never heard of this man before, and never spoke with someone who’s talked about him!
Hey Shogo! Great video! It was well made and very informative. Can you please make a video about Emperor Meiji?
