    In California in the 70’s and 80’s there were many single drive axle trucks hauling containers that had similar setups to give them another axle. Thanks and take care.

    I drove for a small outfit that used the same style like Roadway uses, it had pins that went in the frame towards the cab.

    Thank you for making this video - I came across it accidently, but our company is trying to make one of these to add a 5th axle to a heavy haul tractor, and this helps. We are planning to use a steerable axle, which I think should help a lot with maneuverability, would you think this to be correct? We are in Missouri, where a quad grouping will be permitted for as much as 89,600 lbs, so adding another axle seems to be the right choice vs. a jeep, which would be a horrible pain to maneuver into our jobsites in tight urban areas.

      Definitely go with steerable. Just having a fixed tridem really decreases my steering ability especially in slippery conditions. I can’t imagine a fixed quad.
      I find it neat (a pain in the ass but neat) to see the different combinations being used in different areas.

    Using a double drop, does the spare axle really gain you much weight since you can’t have the 5th wheel plate far enough forward for the best distribution?

    • @luckybananaheavyhaul3407
      @luckybananaheavyhaul3407  2 года назад +1

      Good question. Personally I’m not a fan of this configuration but sometimes we gotta do what we gotta do. With the 5th wheel all the way back you will really load the drives and we can easily permit 66,000 on 3 axles. We will of coarse be light on the steering but you sacrifice a few thousand pounds up front to gain 22,000 in the back. Just be extra cautious in slippery conditions because it won’t steer worth a shit!

    I am not sure (been out of this business for over 20 years) but I do believe that in Europe pin on axles on the truck are illegal. At least I have never come across them. Heard of them but never seen them in situ.

    • @luckybananaheavyhaul3407
      @luckybananaheavyhaul3407  Год назад +1

      They are illegal in western Canada also. Different provinces have different regulations

    How do you make left or right turns when you're loaded ?. Do you drop the air in the pin-on axle before making the turns?

    Interesting...out here in BC we just use tri-drive tractors.

    • @luckybananaheavyhaul3407

      Yeah… I wish we could. Eastern Canada likes to be so different and it’s hard to get permits on tridrives. We have one tridrive and the dispatchers hate it. I don’t make the rules.
      Thanks for watching 😊

    Stearing is seriously comprimised, and so is safety when hauling such (over)weights. All in all this is not a good solution but a 'dirty trick'.
