I had a feeling that you would the entire video, I was kind of surprised. While the original design is strong I feel like modern egg boy takes what made the original so compelling and expands upon it, and I think he's the Eggman that a lot of Sonic fans grew up with.
Until seeing this video, I never realized how scary Eggman can be. He looks straight up demonic in some of his 90's appearances, particularly the cartoons from that era. Even in in moderns design he looks so unnatural with that crazy smile, nose, mustache, and extra long and creepy limbs. This guy looks crazy and you never know what sadistic thing he's planning for Sonic this time. So it's really ironic how the one human character in the Sonic series has managed to remain the most disturbing to look at compared to the rest of the cast. Eggman is competing against multi-colored anthropomorphic animals in this race and he still manages to come out as the most unnatural. The designers were clearly doing something very right when making not just his character design but also Sonic and friends to make them look cool and cute rather than creepy. Props to you Eggman. You may never beat Sonic in the games, but attest you won first place in my nightmares.

I'm with you on Adventure-era Eggman being my favorite, but that could be because I am biased to say that for every character. I will say, Boom's design is really well done and impressive. I especially love that they seemed to have really factored in Eggman's original inspiration of Roosevelt and used that to guide the design. His physique and even facial hair resembles Teddie more than ever before in Boom and it looks great! Great video Mark, already looking forward to the next one!

'Th Adventures of Sonic the hedgehog Robotnik' has a lot going for him in term of design thoughts and plannings he was was designed by Milton knights as he saw that classic Sega Eggman wasn't expressive enough to fit in with animation, this design was also used in the UK Sonic comics when comic artist Richard Elson one of the most prominent artists in the STC series was struggling to again to show any expression other then anger with the classic Eggman design, he went on to choose the adventures of design again as he felt this as the most expressive and fun Eggman design to draw for comics. I would say that this AOSTH design works better for comics and animation,. SATAM Robotnik has only one expression where I personally find him to be mincing, but others find him threatening. AOSTH Robotnik is the most expensive for animation and comics. Where as classic Eggman works for the games as its simpler and easy to translate to game.
I don't know about that, Sonic Mania Adventures and the Man of the Year short would beg to differ because he's expressive in both of those shorts which used the classic Eggman design.
@@KrushtheDingo ill have to agree to disagree on that, yes they are really good emotes for classic egg man within those shorts but I find the exaggerated emotes of the buffoonish 'adventures off' to offer a little more substance for my own tastes personally. Don't get me wrong I still like the man of the year and mania shorts and think they are brilliantly done but for me I'm more a fan of adventures of design.

Later that day, after I entered the reply I think I figured out why Milton Knight couldn't get much expression out of the original Eggman, it's probably because he wears pince-nez sunglasses, and since sunglasses hide your eyes completely it's really hard to get the full expressions since you can't see his eyes.
But metal sonic only really changes from classic to modern (unless you count heroes) but I guess you would be able to add other robotic sonics like mecha sonic or something

He got the robot arm because he was knocked into one of his own robotizer and robotized his arm to be a fully functional robot arm. Also with Boom, his body is actually an egg inverted with the narrow point in his waistline and the wide end in his shoulder region.
Sonic Boom Eggman's body structure gives off an inverted egg type of feel, where he still looks like an egg, just inverted. Also it looked to have taken the most inspiration from Rosovelt
Can't help but notice that you've missed a design. The final design of Robotnik in the UK's "Sonic The Comic". They did use the AoSTH design for a majority of it's run but near the end during the Sonic Adventure arc they used a combination of both the AoSTH design and the Adventure design. ... You know would Eggman's previous form in the comic Dr Ovi Kintobor count as well??? If it is the case then you've missed 2 designs.
Had a chat about the comic book form in the comments earlier today. Definitely really like the mix between AoSTH and Adventure! Such a cool hybrid. Its very rare that I get all of them but I try to go for most of the memorable ones! (for my own sanity haha)
Yeah, the Modern Design for Dr. Eggman (or Robotnik... honestly both names are awesome) is probably my favourite. It just oozes styles and shows how overconfident and scheming he is. Probably also because I grew up with it, with Sonic Advance. With the iconic opening of Dr. Eggman holding the Green Chaos Emerald in his hand and the grin before the characters are introduced.
You know the character designers did really well at making a good villain design when he has such outright weird features that work - a perfectly round torso, colossal feet, spindly legs, and a big goofy mustache with pince-nez glasses. They made THAT threatening.
Fair assessment, I'd say. The Adventure-Era Eggman really does have a decent balance of all the elements that each other design has embodied. On thing that didn't get mentioned which I find quite interesting, is that the UK-based _Sonic the Comic_ started out using a variant of the Classic design for Robotnik, but after a while they transitioned to the AoStH design and actually managed to make it look quite menacing!
Great point on Sonic the Comic, I used to read that! I loved how they actually gave him a reason for the design changing, he even ended up in the adventure outfit by the end of the series!
Big fan of his design from the Genesis games, and his original Adventure design. It’s not really Eggman to me if he doesn’t have his signature grin. Also the parts of his cape that make it look like he has walrus tusks complete the Beatles reference beautifully.
I think my favorite design for Robotnik / Eggman would be either his Sonic Boom design or the Adventure / Unleashed design (yes I'm lumping them together. They're basically the same)
I legit agree,as much as we all appreciate the classic first design, it helped gave a stepping stone for the Sonic Adventure look of Eggman with has been loved and still loved to this day, however... I do appreciate the effort the Sonic Boom Eggman design went through, they've went to a level of actually giving him a different type of look while still maintaining his character.
I actually liked 06 Eggman. He was competent, confident, and truly threatening, but the fact that you could see his eyes showed that he knew he was in way over his head with the Solaris thing. His design reflects the deeper plot they were trying to go for, and he still manages to look like a legitimate villain. Not to mention his voice in 06 is a great combination between the Bristow and Pollock voices, achieving what I believe to be a happy balance for he character. I'd honestly like to see that type of voice return for Eggman.
I'm a big fan of the classic era, I love how they portrayed him in Sonic Mania Adventures. I do like the bells and whistles he has on his suit during his Dreamcast era, it'd be interesting to see a combination of the two. I think my favourite aspects are his long thin legs with a big belly on top, both his shiny glasses and goggles on top, and his golden buttons instead of the yellow cravat from the classic era. You know, I think The Sonic Movie will be on Earth, and Robotnik will end up getting transported to Mobius, where he's gone a bit mad trying to track down Sonic, which might explain that weird background at the end of the trailer; I think that's Mobius.
With all his industrial themes, I'm surprised they've never had Eggman as an industrialist like Lex Luthor or Kingpin. Would make more sense for him then it did Cobra Commander.
My favourite Eggman is Colours for having one of the slickest renders and overall entertaining personalities and the Sonic Boom shows design comes in second for looking cool but not as iconic as Colours and also being the most human in a way.
I won't sue ya. I can see why someone might like it. I just thought it was so ridiculous for a sonic cartoon, musical instruments and Sonic being of royal decree... Not for me lol

Sonic Adventure 2 Battle being possibly my favorite sonic game, I enjoyee that design immensely, and find it the most "iconic" in my mind, along with, wildly enough, Sonic Dark Brotherhood's 2-D portrait art design.
I honestly really dig almost every Robotnik/Eggman design (well, except maybe the '06 one...) Also, prior to generations, I never really considered the redesigns in Adventure to be anything way different, I always just thought of them like... the games are in 3D, and more detail, so of course the characters would have more detail, too
Fun fact: The robots seen in Mean Bean Machine are all from the first episode of Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog as they either appear in the audience, or trying to hunt Sonic down.

He will always be "Dr (Ivo) Robotnik" to me, being that it's the reverse of "Dr Ovi Kintobar", which was who he was in the "Sonic The Comic" comics, before he absorbed chaos energy and became evil, way back when, not to mention it goes with the very childish insult "Robuttnik"
I apopreciate how you used Mania's cover of the 2 player Mean Bean Machine theme while showing Robotnik in the TV shows. Man I love the puyo series, and that game is what brought me into it. Dr Ivo Robotnik will always top Satan as a last boss lol.
Eggman has always been one of my favorite video game villains right up there with Diablo and Dracula from Castlevania. The fact that the egghead himself beat out Goku which should've beaten him by a landslide is only barely under Kirby's votes, that's just impressive to me.
Btw I miss the classic eggman, v design on the front; which was actually part of his cape on the back; it was so iconic in the older games and they just abandoned it for no reason. It was also the primary yellow colour on his design so to see it go feels like removing an important peice of his character.
Funnily enough, tho the movies came out, it'd be interesting like the fleetway reference at the end of the second movie, they did have robotnick have a personality disorder and he's actually maybe prideful to a near extreme, but just friendly and want to research sonic out of curiosity (maybe help him with something like spider man and the lizard), but then "eggman"(maybe his dad pelted him with eggs in a riddler's dad like fashion motive wise, and his persona clung to that memory) would slowly fully take over him (That'd be a cool what if, you gotta admit)
Without a doubt, the best design for Robotnik, for me, will always be his 16 bit iterations. Watching him move and animate so much more in Mania as well has only cemented this opinion. I can respect the post 06 look because it is way more fluid and less jank, and I will always have a soft spot in my heart for SATAM because he's the character at his absolute most competent and powerful, but OG is the way for me.

The Adventure design is the best in my opinion, but the Aosth, Boom, and Classic designs are great too. I know the Unleashed design is the same, but I just prefer the Adventure art style in comparison.
One sound effect the really brought out Robotnik's creepy design was the laugh he did at some point in Sonic CD (American version)... yeah, I did not sleep well back then after hearing that.

The one from the loony toons style definitely had the most hilarious and dynamic design, and the voice actor was perfect for the role as well. I wouldn't say it was the best design, but definitely the most meme-worthy
I have a Nostalgic fondness for classic Eggman, and I'd pick the taller Adventure iteration as my favorite, but I'm genuinely curious about where they'll go with Jim Carrey's Robotnik. The movie has already released now, and I thought it was interesting watching him evolve into a more familiar design. I hope they give Carrey a body suit and a crazier mustache. We already know he has a very expressive, borderline cartoonish, face, which helps in his favor for the role.
You should do a Perfect design livestream like what Mardiculous did where he would do polls about different parts of a character’s design (arms, head, feet, other design elements, etc.) and then draw that character

You know the character designers did really well at making a good villain design when he has such outright weird features that work - a perfectly round torso, colossal feet, spindly legs, and a big goofy mustache with pince-nez glasses.
They made THAT threatening.
Fair assessment, I'd say. The Adventure-Era Eggman really does have a decent balance of all the elements that each other design has embodied.
On thing that didn't get mentioned which I find quite interesting, is that the UK-based _Sonic the Comic_ started out using a variant of the Classic design for Robotnik, but after a while they transitioned to the AoStH design and actually managed to make it look quite menacing!
Great point on Sonic the Comic, I used to read that! I loved how they actually gave him a reason for the design changing, he even ended up in the adventure outfit by the end of the series!

Big fan of his design from the Genesis games, and his original Adventure design. It’s not really Eggman to me if he doesn’t have his signature grin.
Also the parts of his cape that make it look like he has walrus tusks complete the Beatles reference beautifully.

I think my favorite design for Robotnik / Eggman would be either his Sonic Boom design or the Adventure / Unleashed design (yes I'm lumping them together. They're basically the same)

I legit agree,as much as we all appreciate the classic first design, it helped gave a stepping stone for the Sonic Adventure look of Eggman with has been loved and still loved to this day, however...
I do appreciate the effort the Sonic Boom Eggman design went through, they've went to a level of actually giving him a different type of look while still maintaining his character.
I love how in the Sonic movie his voice gets all gravely like Egg man. It also seems he has some sort of super strength?

I actually liked 06 Eggman. He was competent, confident, and truly threatening, but the fact that you could see his eyes showed that he knew he was in way over his head with the Solaris thing. His design reflects the deeper plot they were trying to go for, and he still manages to look like a legitimate villain. Not to mention his voice in 06 is a great combination between the Bristow and Pollock voices, achieving what I believe to be a happy balance for he character. I'd honestly like to see that type of voice return for Eggman.

I'm a big fan of the classic era, I love how they portrayed him in Sonic Mania Adventures.
I do like the bells and whistles he has on his suit during his Dreamcast era, it'd be interesting to see a combination of the two.
I think my favourite aspects are his long thin legs with a big belly on top, both his shiny glasses and goggles on top, and his golden buttons instead of the yellow cravat from the classic era.
You know, I think The Sonic Movie will be on Earth, and Robotnik will end up getting transported to Mobius, where he's gone a bit mad trying to track down Sonic, which might explain that weird background at the end of the trailer; I think that's Mobius.
That's definitely a good guess. The whole thing does kind of work as an origin story in a way!

With all his industrial themes, I'm surprised they've never had Eggman as an industrialist like Lex Luthor or Kingpin. Would make more sense for him then it did Cobra Commander.

I think the best part in Dr. Robotnik's look is cleanly opposite color scheme of red and black against Sonic's blue and white. Primary colors in both.
My favourite Eggman is Colours for having one of the slickest renders and overall entertaining personalities and the Sonic Boom shows design comes in second for looking cool but not as iconic as Colours and also being the most human in a way.

Sonic Adventure 2 Battle being possibly my favorite sonic game, I enjoyee that design immensely, and find it the most "iconic" in my mind, along with, wildly enough, Sonic Dark Brotherhood's 2-D portrait art design.
While I really dislike modern sonic’s design, modern eggman’s design is just incredible. I love it
I honestly really dig almost every Robotnik/Eggman design (well, except maybe the '06 one...)
Also, prior to generations, I never really considered the redesigns in Adventure to be anything way different, I always just thought of them like... the games are in 3D, and more detail, so of course the characters would have more detail, too

He will always be "Dr (Ivo) Robotnik" to me, being that it's the reverse of "Dr Ovi Kintobar", which was who he was in the "Sonic The Comic" comics, before he absorbed chaos energy and became evil, way back when, not to mention it goes with the very childish insult "Robuttnik"
I apopreciate how you used Mania's cover of the 2 player Mean Bean Machine theme while showing Robotnik in the TV shows. Man I love the puyo series, and that game is what brought me into it. Dr Ivo Robotnik will always top Satan as a last boss lol.
Eggman has always been one of my favorite video game villains right up there with Diablo and Dracula from Castlevania. The fact that the egghead himself beat out Goku which should've beaten him by a landslide is only barely under Kirby's votes, that's just impressive to me.

I would say that Eggman benefited from his design upgrade in Adventure 1 and 2. It truly brings out the MANIACAL genius from the guy himself.

Eggmans theme from Sa2 one of many reasons i love the modern eggman design ESPECIALLY dreamcast era of him
Btw I miss the classic eggman, v design on the front; which was actually part of his cape on the back; it was so iconic in the older games and they just abandoned it for no reason. It was also the primary yellow colour on his design so to see it go feels like removing an important peice of his character.

Funnily enough, tho the movies came out, it'd be interesting like the fleetway reference at the end of the second movie, they did have robotnick have a personality disorder and he's actually maybe prideful to a near extreme, but just friendly and want to research sonic out of curiosity (maybe help him with something like spider man and the lizard), but then "eggman"(maybe his dad pelted him with eggs in a riddler's dad like fashion motive wise, and his persona clung to that memory) would slowly fully take over him
(That'd be a cool what if, you gotta admit)
Without a doubt, the best design for Robotnik, for me, will always be his 16 bit iterations. Watching him move and animate so much more in Mania as well has only cemented this opinion. I can respect the post 06 look because it is way more fluid and less jank, and I will always have a soft spot in my heart for SATAM because he's the character at his absolute most competent and powerful, but OG is the way for me.

The Adventure design is the best in my opinion, but the Aosth, Boom, and Classic designs are great too.
I know the Unleashed design is the same, but I just prefer the Adventure art style in comparison.

I have a Nostalgic fondness for classic Eggman, and I'd pick the taller Adventure iteration as my favorite, but I'm genuinely curious about where they'll go with Jim Carrey's Robotnik.
The movie has already released now, and I thought it was interesting watching him evolve into a more familiar design. I hope they give Carrey a body suit and a crazier mustache. We already know he has a very expressive, borderline cartoonish, face, which helps in his favor for the role.
