    This one is experimental but I'm proud of how it turned out. I appreciate that you guys give me the leeway to experiment with new styles of acting / delivery / mediums within my art, and I hope that you find that giving me this leeway allows me to make more interesting and varied kinds of art for you in the future.

      Much of our perceptions are self-regulated to prevent ourselves from being too aware of things that suck. It's unironically a very normal thing, which makes these videos a menace to society and I love them for it. Comedy is great way to overpower that regulation with the power of funny, which allows you to be aware of it and still be able to handle the greater level of awareness.

    You should seriously consider going to the faroe islands or other small island nations! Some villages there are so small you have to rely on the community there, and it creates a really strong bond, and the culture is very heavily centred on being kind to strangers and the whole national identity is thus very tightly knit. On their national day, they all flock to the capital and hold hands and dance together in the main square, a very welcoming society! I think that might be the outer circle you're describing, and from there, all the other circles just fall into place

    • @ricardogens9834
      @ricardogens9834 Год назад +7

      Oh hi Ingen, thanks for making me discover so many cool historical songs from around the world!
      That's what happens in isolated, distant communities in somewhat hostile environments, they have no choice but rely on each other and so have much deeper bonds than most. You could say the same happens in smaller countries under threat from a bigger one. Usually in these countries there is forced conscription, which creates shared experiences between most people in the society, forming a bond between all of them, but it also leads, on instinct, for the people of that society to live their culture and its unique aspects more intensely, in order to preserve their difference from the larger country nearby, creating a more united and stable society. I'm thinking of Finland, Greece, South Korea and Switzerland, even Israel and Taiwan.

    Good one jREG, you began your commentary with a typical "we need communities" mantra that might have felt overdone in your work at this point only to surprise with an interesting, nuanced extension of that moral lesson that better explains its practical ramifications, namely its injection of cynicism into intimate relationships--with hard hitting lines that perfectly illustrate people's true feelings that are hard to describe--only to quickly halt any viewer ready to hone in on that conclusion by bringing in another perspective of sympathy only to once again acknowledge the harsh reality, safeguarding against any false optimism, then rebuking the "well, do you have any better ideas?" argument while simultaneously lamenting that as a society we have only deconstructed a problem that was perhaps too young to comprehend solutions for, and yet we must move forward lest the widespread suffering continue for generations to come. You really showed those people whose boss!

    I feel as though when you hit a critical mass of enough people experiencing, the western cultural atomic household getting smaller and smaller as jREG demonstrates. It genuinely does start to heal itself as the unified system or zeitgeist of the individuals in this environment are able to also as jREG mentions in this video "identify the problem". We will be ok, the atomisation of the individual just has to find safe ways to recapture past moments of stable experience where we can find that connection in each other and find the context.

    I am 30, and I have for years had recurring dreams that I am back in high school. I was not a "high school years are my glory years" kid - I was a goth kid who spent all of my time in the band room with my small circle of friends. But I think my soul really yearns for that time, because it was the only time in postmodern society that I experienced the kind of "community" that this video describes, with a large community of people of varying degrees of closeness and fondness. It's such a cliche for people to joke about their high school years being awful and how they couldn't wait to get out, and I myself was an awkward kid who definitely experienced the alienation of having strange older kids I didn't know shout homophobic slurs at me then walk away, but I often find myself fantasizing about the idea of attending some kind of never-ending high school experience for grown adults, a small hub of connection to meet and interact with others.

    Ancient (2-3 generations ago) humans were mostly stuck with their communities. There were extreme instances where someone was kicked out, or you might have moved out of the city, you could have picked out of 3 clubs for your hobby, or might have gone to a temple further away if you liked it much better than your nearest one - it was not completely locked. But it was very solid. In this enviro one needs to get along and defuse conflicts. People will step on each other toes and interact with others with quite different ideas, conflicts will start, so everyone has to learn to live with it or how to make peace.
    Online "communities" you can leave by clicking one button. But also any faux pas can be immortalized, become endlessly reproducible and follow you wherever you go. Everyone else can also mute you with 2 or 3 clicks of a button. Trying to make peace and talk over differences can sometimes work, but usually its a big waste of time, its unpaid labor which other members will likely not reciprocate when they disagree with you and muting would have worked so much faster.

I was doing a language exchange thing at university once and this girl said her hobby is "talking to people" which made me deeply confused that someone would base their life around social relationships rather than activities like consuming media or crafting things. It's nice to be able to get some insight into the head of someone like jreg who thinks about social relationships in a totally different way to myself where other people are just ways to learn about new things.

That doesn't mean selfish potential, but utilizing whatever talents you are born with and whatever talents you desire to create and strengthen in yourself to help others and to take care of your family. The person that is your partner, whatever commitment that person gives to you is a gift to be cherished, whether or not that person is a match for your personality. Actually, the differences and distances in understanding between you and your partner are a gift as well because they indicate strengths if both of you maintain honest commitment to each other.

    I watched this video when it came out about a year ago. I watched it one time. I knew it was an instant classic, at least to me, from the moment I watched it, and thought about it from time to time. I knew I couldn't fully personally relate to it like I had with other of Jreg's brutally honest videos about community and atomisation because though I was quite familiar with such concepts of loneliness, I had never experienced a real relationship, only surface-level gradeschool flings with little emotion behind them. I feel like I was a boy then. Even though I had watched it but once, the memory of this video haunted me through the entire six month relationship I was just in. During this, at every crucial junction, the words of Jreg rang like a rusty bell echoing through the fog in my head like some kind of soothsayer's divine warning-like an apocalyptic prophecy-and I couldn't help but go along with it anyway. I surmise that one could imagine, generally speaking, what I recently went through, in order to bring me here, now, to comment precisely thus:
