They didn't respect games as a valid medium for storytelling and ended up screwing up Netflix's entire planned universe because they couldn't be humble. I think one of the main problems why things get so messed up... Witcher, Warhammer etc, is that the big companies that want to adapt them are heavy on virtue signalling. Which has its place, you can focus on the character that already exists and make them prominent, but instead they choose to change the narrative/create new ones where none exists.
    IDK. I get it that LGBTQ+ characters dont exist much in older books/universes or even female characters may not have been written in the ways where they are prominent. Like Arwen is a powerful character and has her place but Netflix would rather have her replace Aragorn's place or in that kinda position of power. But that kinda decision making warps the universe that is already in place and that the fans know and love if poorly written.
    And dont get me wrong, I'm all for having shows where a woman can be in a position of power/main character, but like within the context of the IP that you're in and the universe that is made. Mary Sue/Gary Stu characters are so inherently boring. And self inserts of these type of characters are just... Universe destroying. not specific to witcher/warhammer.

They made a whole thing in season 1 about students of Aretuza giving up their ability to have children to become beautiful, and in season 3 Netflix introduced tweedledee and tweedledum. The actress who plays Keira Metz looked like an actual troll. She is as wide as she is short, her nose takes up most of her face and her hair is just wild. The second one was just a BIG black woman. Nothing wrong with either of them and they're beautiful in their own way, but i have a hard time believing that their characters gave up the ability to have children to look like that. FYI, the games are actually a sequel to the books, so Andrzej Sapkowski not liking the games probably has more to do with he fact that he didn't write the story for the games, rather than the games diverging from what he wrote. In fact, he probably has a good idea of where he wanted to take the story if he did continue writing, but the games popularised his books internationally with most people's first exposure to the Witcher series being from playing the games. As a result, most people consider the games as being the canon story with the books being the backstory you can read after playing the games. There's also the fact that Sapkowski got screwed with the licensing of the Witcher as CDPR only gave him (at his own request) a one off payment for the license. I think all this adds up to his dislike for the games.

    I want to address what you said about the writers. I agree with you. They did think they could do it better, and were even laughing at the source material in the books and making fun of it. I am an author of fantasy, and speaking from the voice of experience, the writers should have known from day one that you cannot write someone else's characters better than they can. This was Peter Jackson's success with the Lord of the Rings, because he and his writers adapted the source material, instead of trying to rewrite it. Had the Netflix idiots realized that, perhaps the show would have been much better than it was. Henry Cavill did a perfect Geralt, and brought him to life so well, it blew many fans away. Some were even willing to keep watching in spite of the bad deviation from the lore, just because he brought Geralt to life and embodied him so well. Liam is a good actor, but he does not have the chops to fill Cavill's shoes in this show. It's only going to further destroy what could have been an incredible show, and will potentially damage Liam's career.

      Well, the books are mostly centered around Ciri and Geralt initially, and Yennefer is largely out of the main story after Thanedd but it's definitely I would say 50/50 Geralt / Ciri in the 1st 2 books, then it's largely Ciri focused afterwards with Geralt doing stuff on the side. The original book set as a whole was never just focused on Geralt especially towards the middle to end of the books where in the latter half of the books he's just "there".

    The witcher would have worked great as a netflix seasonal show where each episode is a self contained plot involving a monster that geralt is contracted to kill, with an overarching journey where the last 3 or 4 books is setup to fight a much greater threat and geralt is involving a bunch of characters throughout.

    I stand by the fact that these showrunners should never do a 1:1 remake. Instead they should make a whole new story set in the universe.
    That way they can have all the creative freedom they want without the public expectation to follow every story line. Fallout is a great example of this.

      @mattandrews2594 Delicious in Dungeon is spectacular, as well. It's really this (The Witcher) and a handful of high-budget production pieces that have put the stink on Netflix. They killed two things I was a fan of, The Witcher and Cowboy Bebop. Otherwise, One-Piece was fantastic, and there's a lot of good stuff on there. And they're willing to take on risky Korean shows, that could have been divisive, like Squid Game (they paid for it, but Hwang Dong-hyuk made it without bowing to anyone). They just need to showcase, but let the production be by independent companies that are passionate, not studio politicians.

    It was so easy for them. All they had to do was follow the main plot of the books and add artistic flair when it promotes the visual medium. P. Jackson did it well with Lord of the Rings. They had all the resources they needed at their fingertips. All they had to do was emulate a story and make money.
    It's insane how CDPR managed to craft an original story and still preserve the original theme of the book series, while they were still a small team of Polish developers. How on Earth did Netflix not manage to outshine a small team of developers while having the advantage of telling the original story?

      While true: they’ll never do it since the producers are egomaniacs.
      Basically explained by Kevin Smith and his story about his Superman movie: one of them wanted a giant spider in it…just because. Also check out Strazensky and Babylon 5 problems.
      The rich people ALWAYS have to make their mark and mess up productions. They’ll never be convinced otherwise so the OG author on hand would do nothing. Cavil was just as good, if not better (better due to his enthusiasm as a fan to recreate it faithfully), than the Author and he accomplished little.

    • @todd8398
      @todd8398 2 месяца назад +5

      @@bitharne The producer with the giant spider fetish is Jon Peters. He was a producer on the Wild Wild West, which is the reason for the giant spider tank at the end of that movie. He also tried to get a giant mechanical spider into Smith's Superman movie and an earlier movie treatment of The Sandman, both of which were eventually shelved. To his credit, Neil Gaiman was dead-set against the idea. Peters was also a prod on the movie Man of Steel, but Christopher Nolan barred him from the set entirely, which was probably for the best.
