This channel is the reason I got my TSL. This channel is the reason why I tried and fell in love with the SD-1. I bought the basic SD-1 and loved it so much that when the 40th anni came out, I needed it just because it was a beautiful version of my fav boost. Other than cosmetics, they're identical. I won't put velcro on the 40th tho.
You can wrap the base plate in something, and then stick the velcro to that. Then, if you wish to remove the velcro without screwing up the base plate, you're golden.
Same here! I had wanted a DSL100 for probably 20 years and this channel's comparisons of the 800 and 2000 made me ask myself what I was waiting for so I finally bought one and man I wish I would have done this 15 years ago lol. I also picked up an SD-1 as I'd always known about them but had never really been shown how good they could sound until this channel. Thanks Euge!
My partner bought me the 40th anniversary edition SD-1 because of your video for Christmas 🎄. It's amazing. Really makes the Orange Dark Terror shine. Cheers Brother. 💪
Hey Euge, thx for the vids brother!! I too think that the SD-1 is the best all around pedal, there's a reason they are celebrating 40th anniversary, as always I have learned alot from this video. Keep shreddin'and keep make videos. We appreciate you and your hard work!
The more I listen to you play anything I’m really liking the EMG 81-85 combo. Never had them before but they seem to me to stay clear and balanced. All I’ve ever used is passive pick ups but really liking the EMGs. Love my SD1👍
Yeah it’s a classic combo which I’ve used basically ever since I started to play guitar. Which was ’89 and I think I bought my first 81/85 set around ’91 😎.
I usually learn more in five minutes watching your videos than watching ten videos by other RUclipsrs. It was useful seeing and hearing your dialing in process. I liked your Japan SD-1 and the new black one best. They sounded the most open, balanced, and tone rich. I thought the other two had more distortion and less tone. What is that first Amp your were using - Wild1, or something like that? I thought the pedals sounded particularly good with it. Thanks
The BOSS SD-1 is an awesome overdrive pedal, I love it! Really pairs amazingly with Marshalls, is versatile (from clean boost, to bluesy crunch to a kick on a saturated amp...it does everything) and is super affordable! I got my Made in Taiwan about two years ago in a music store when I was in Paris, France. Then a couple of weeks ago I got my SD-1 4A when I bought my Marshall DSL20H, because another SD-1 can always be of some use and also because the inverted colours look kickass! Great videos, love your channel!
Hey Euge, despite being a classic I never paid attention to Sd1, but after watching your videos, hearing your aggressive tone I thought ''hey there's something about this kid''. I'm working on a version with a few extra controls, but I want to keep as much of the original circuit as possible because it's fantastic. And a suggestion, more out of curiosity and to see the small differences between the versions you have, is to pass a pink noise through the pedals and put a spectrum analyzer on the back, so you can visualize the frequency response of each one of them. Thanks for your content.👏
I bought the Waza after watching your Waza comparison video some time ago. I really like the way the C mode adds more balls to my VS8100 without it becoming too gritty. It seems a bit smoother than the standard SD-1.
I went ahead and bought the 40th after this demo. I was afraid the early version was going to sound way better but they're the same to my ears. The 40th black colorway looks rad!
Another great vid! So glad i found this channel. SD-1 - one of the fundamental drive pedals, everyone should have at least tried. It is a long-time companion to my music
In 2016 or 2017 Boss started producing surface mount PCBs, so there are two types of Boss SD-1 made in Taiwan. The board mounting changes totally... but the result to my ears is the same :)
Have an SD-1W but wasn't super digging it. Went and got a made in Malaysia regular SD-1 today and I just love the simplicity. Sounds a little better than the Waza in S. I'll be selling the Waza. For C mode on the SD-1W, I found it very similar to a TS9, which I have so not really losing anything.
Okay i have to buy one of these, i was thinking about getting the fortin grind for my 6505+ but this pedal can do the same thing almost while being like 3rd the price and it has more controls so i can dial it in for the amp which is nice. Andd the 40th edition looks pretty damn cool imo. Great video!
Yeah, they all sound great. The big USA vendor has the regular yellow one for $50. Can't beat the value. Great demo! You really showed what these pedals can do. They all sound pretty much the same to me on my end. You still got that BOSS Katana? Stick one in front of the Katana... and watch what happens! ( It actually makes the Katana sound better! )
What an à propos video for me right now… lol. I like all 4. I agree the one on the right (MIJ) has more high end fizz. The WazaCraft seems to have a title less gain (volume). Surprisingly, to my ears, the 2 Malaysia pedals sound the best to me. I would even say that I find the 40th anniversary pedal a little brighter, and the standard one tighter. I’ve watched a lot of your videos in the last few days, and you’ve sold me: I’m going to buy an SD-1 tomorrow for my JCM 800 2203 and JCM 900 2210…
I always liked the SD-1 and SD-2. really gives a boost that cuts right through loud bass players and drummers😁😉. I get my basic rhythm tone and those pedals add flavor when you're playing leads and fills. Nice
Yes. That's how you do it Euge. I always back the gain down. It just doesn't sound good. I was that guy when I was younger😁 I learned from older players that too much gain on guitar doesn't set good in the mix. Especially with lower tunings. Backing off the gain allows more of the natural sounds of guitar and amp to be heard... and felt
Hey when playing that dirty blues style...often you WANT the lowend that the SD-1 cuts out. What pedal do you really like for that kind of stuff when playing into a plexi (I've got an SV20)? I know the Waza SD-1 has the other mode for some of that...but I was wondering if there was something else you liked better.
Since you have four of these, you can definitely take two of them, plus one of your Marshalls, and attempt to get that Criss Oliva tone. He apparently used a "clean" Marshall (it was likely low gain, on the verge of being crunchy, but where you could pick soft and get a clean tone). The first SD-1 with some gain, probably a bit of volume past unity, and the tone all the way down. That went into the second SD-1, with the tone all the way up, and similar volume / gain settings, then into the front of the amp. He supposedly had high output pickups as well.
Also, I don't have a Boss SD-1, but I have an MXR Zakk Wylde Overdrive (an SD-1 with very minor tweaks), and an MXR Custom Bad Ass Modified Overdrive (close to a Wylde, but with a 100hz knob and a bump switch, which I believe adds mids).
@@EugeValovirta230V The main difference I noticed by looking at the schematics (and this was quite awhile ago) was that the tone knob worked at a lower frequency, which made the pedal darker than the SD-1. I believe there were bullseye color ways of a few of the Boss pedals Zakk used, so I am curious why he went to MXR instead. My guess is that MXR offered more money, or were willing to make minor changes like the frequency at which the tone knob adjusted the sound. For instance, I think the Black Label Chorus (and thus the blue, non-signature Analog Chorus) is essentially the CE-5, which Zakk used prior to switching to MXR.
I guess MXR offered a cut of the sales and who wouldn’t want to have a signature line of pedals especially when they are pretty much the same than what the artists was using anyway 😎.
I have a G-Lab switcher on my studio board where the pedals I’m using at a given time are connected but this worked just fine for this purpose since I don’t normally use 4 SDs in a row 😁. And Boss pedals have all buffered bypass so basically you can put them in a row as much as you want and it doesn’t really affect the sound. With true bypass pedals you’ll have an issue and that’s one of the reasons I prefer BOSS 👌😎.
Euge!!! i have never owned an OD pedal...i just pre-ordered this one... i think I've told u before that i run a boogie Mark IV and a EVH 50W stealth together...dont need a OD, but im gonna check it out my brother!!! cheers!!!
Hi. Which of these sd1 do you prefer to boost a high gain amp? Which had more aggressive focus? I have a single rectifier and today put attention on sd1. It sounds amazing. Thanks.
Been waiting for this video, and the results were pretty much what I expected. All sound great, the original from the 90's seemed to have a tad more up top. Bought a new Sd-1 a few months ago with your affiliate link before I heard about the 40th anniversary model. Gotta say, it looks fantastic in the reversed colors. Great playing and great video 🤘🤘
I like your original SD-1 the best and the new Malaysia standard one the least. The Anniversary one sounds the warmest and I do like the reverse colors..
🤓THE ORDER OF PEDALS EFFECTS THE SOUND & FEEL......MORE AGGRESSIVE THE 1ST IN LINE & LESS AGGRESIVE ....MORE SMOOTHER / THINNER AT THE END OF THE CHAIN........ALSO EVERY QUARTER INCH PLUG SOUND DIFFERENT ( some are dull, bright, stiff brash, compress, etc.) I BUY THEM BY THE THOUSANDS & 2 OUTTA A HUNDRED PLUGS I KEEP FOR ONE CABLE ONLY
1.original 90's japan comes in first with the airy character and sweetness. 2. black 40th anniversary is all round best and comes in a close second with alot of sound character. 3.the japan waza kraft comes in 3rd for an all around boss sd1 . 4.the malaysian 4th. however if a distinct hard clipping and clearness ultra clean leaner sound for an aggressive harder clipping sound is desired or preferred it could be your number one.
They have a buffer, so if you go through all of them, for testing, I guess you might lose some tone, dynamics or have unwanted coloring, most noticeable probably when testing the last one in the chain. You felt the most "air" on the first one, maybe just for an experiment try to change the order or go one by one without the others in the signal chain. Anyway good sound though, of course as always😎👌
Yeah buffer helps to keep the signal stronger so that’s why I didn’t feel the need to use my G-lab switcher on this one 😎. So in my experience it’s the opposite to your experience 😊. I’ve used them ”individually” and the results were like on the video 😊. Thanks! 🙏
hi, im really confused about your SD-1s, I cant find some of them, the one with the symmetric switch sounds interesting and whats the boded one with the red scratch on it that you say is your fav? look forward to hear from you thanks again maestro !!
They’re all stock. Some made in Japan, some in Taiwan & Malaysia but it’s the exact same pedal except the Waza which have the switch so it doesn’t cut as much low end. But I never use that switch ’cos I like the way the original cuts the lows and keeps any amp tight. Why have only one when you can have as many as you want 😎. The red scratch is dried blood 🤟. Or maybe it’s paint I can’t remember anymore 😎.
@@EugeValovirta230V ah okay, would be interesting to hear them side by side, because i Only have the OD-3 and not the SD-1 😉 and i'm currently thinking about buying an SD-1
Eugene, I've heard that many famous bands that the guitarist they use the boss sd1 with turning the distortion overdrive all the way down and using it as a tone-shaping pedal like almost like an EQ pedal I know that the queen of the Stone age has done this and also the band death with Chuck Schumer he did this also I don't know if you know any other bands that have done this but it's a very interesting way of using the sd1 boss I think Zach wild does this also he kind of like turns the overdrive close to zero or very very subtle and using the pedal as an EQ pedal practically as a tone shaping device if you can list them and hit me back up on the comments to tell me because I'm interested on using the pedal like in that way
I have no idea about that. I just use it the way I use it: level almost maxed, tone around one, drive just a hair up. And sometiles something totally different. The knobs are there so one can turn them and dial different tones. If it sounds good, it’s good 👌.
I have a Fryette Fat Bottom with Eminence P50E speakers which I use when noodling by myself. But mostly I use St.Rock Reactive Load with Jens Bogren’s IRs especially when recording (these videos, albums etc recording in general). My go to IR from Jens is my signature IR called ’Valovirtuous’ 😎👌. This applies to all amps 😊.
Hi, Euge! Great work as usual. Bought an sd-1w (taiwan made) a week ago and i love it ))). Have you tried Boss ST-2 Power Stack? What d'you think of it?
@@EugeValovirta230V well, i thought all the wazacraft is from Japan, but i was wrong. I attached the photos in the comment section of your FB post. Good luck!
Ok thanks! Maybe the first batch was made in Japan and then they moved it. But who cares; if it sounds good it’s good. And Boss pedals are built the same way, like a tank, no matter where they are assemled.
Ah ok 😁. Well that totally depends what a player wants. When I started I played a long time without any pedals and was totally happy until I wanted a bit more drive / gain and then I bought an overdrive. Well it was actually Boss HM-2 which is über heavy distortion and shortly after that I bought SD-1 which I still use to this day 😎. Then I wanted a bit more ”lush” clean sound so I bought a chorus pedal and then I wanted a wah sound so I bought a wah. Well you got the point 😉
Hello Euge Valovirta. First of all thank you for the work on your interresting videos (thanks to your videos I recently get a second hand JCM800 from 1986, with the fadded tolex). Ok, here I got a question : I never used pedal boost, and I would like to get into it. I'm interrested in the Boss SD1, but do you know the Xotic BB preamp ? I will watch, right now, your video "Different gain pedals on my home studio pedalboard" to search information about the boss sd 1, but if you are interrested in making a video comparing the sd1 and the xotic bb preamp (and maybe some maxons..) I would be interreted. bye
As a Malaysian citizen I'm glad Boss is making pedal in our country even the factory is not in my state.....
Cool!

Bought a new Sd-1 a few months ago with your affiliate link before I heard about the 40th anniversary model. Gotta say, it looks fantastic in the reversed colors. Great playing and great video 🤘🤘
Cool man and thanks!
Man what style can you not play? But yeah gotta get me one of those black ones. Thanks for doing this video.
Jazz isn’t my strongest area but I can fake it pretty ok 😊. Cool! 👌
Great bro!!!!
Thanks C!
You are wellcome E!!!!
I like your original SD-1 the best and the new Malaysia standard one the least. The Anniversary one sounds the warmest and I do like the reverse colors..
🤟
I've noticed that Japanese SD in a lot of your videos. Whats with the red line? You spill some paint?
Yeah it’s my first OD I bought in the 90s. I think it’s paint. Can’t remember anymore how that got there 😎.
Thanks! 🙏
😉😉imo the malaysia made (2nd from right, which is my fave) has more grind compared to the waza 😉😉
Hey bro, what pick ups are you using in this guitar? EMG's?
EMG 81 & 85. The classic combo 🤟.
@@EugeValovirta230V u rule brothta!!
it sounds like the black one is a tick louder
hi, im really confused about your SD-1s, I cant find some of them, the one with the symmetric switch sounds interesting and whats the boded one with the red scratch on it that you say is your fav?
look forward to hear from you
thanks again maestro !!
@@EugeValovirta230V 😂 ok thanks again
I'm curious if you guys ever tried the Boss OD-3 and how do you like it compared to the SD-1?
Actually for some reason I haven’t tried that one.
@@EugeValovirta230V ah okay, would be interesting to hear them side by side, because i Only have the OD-3 and not the SD-1 😉 and i'm currently thinking about buying an SD-1
Go for it. It’s like 50 bucks so less than a dinner in a restaurant 😎.
What kind of speakers do you used for your bad boy?
I have a Fryette Fat Bottom with Eminence P50E speakers which I use when noodling by myself. But mostly I use St.Rock Reactive Load with Jens Bogren’s IRs especially when recording (these videos, albums etc recording in general). My go to IR from Jens is my signature IR called ’Valovirtuous’ 😎👌.
This applies to all amps 😊.
Nice comparison .👍🏻 It could be nice if you compare the EMG 81 vs 81x and 57 using bad boy and other tube amps ?
Thanks! That’s actually a really good idea! 🙏👌
Pepita dances, we learn!!!
Good 😎.
is that D' Tunning?
Drop C if I remember correct 😎.
Have u tried powering the pedals with 9V carbon zinc (not alkaline) batteries? Extra fat tone with the batteries
No. I use a power supply 😎.
I have SD-1 and Digitech Bad Monkey. Maybe i'm deaf but i like Digitech more. I think it cuts that muddy low end better :)
It’s all about personal preferences. If it sounds good it’s good 👌.
Hi, Euge! Great work as usual. Bought an sd-1w (taiwan made) a week ago and i love it ))). Have you tried Boss ST-2 Power Stack? What d'you think of it?
Thanks! Cool man! Is it made in Taiwan? Mine, which I bought a few years ago, says made in Japan 😎.
No I haven’t tried that.
And Boss pedals are built the same way, like a tank, no matter where they are assemled.
oh fuck... that gorgeous LTD at the halfway point in the vid.... mate; you are a man after my own heart. I myself am SO partial to LTD's.....
😎👌
Hey euge what do you think it's the first pedal a guitar player should get first?
Thank you for your content it's always interesting
A tuner. Glad to hear that! Thanks!
@@EugeValovirta230V thanks to you, but my bad I needed to be more specific, what pedal should a player get after a tuner😅, sorry for bothering you man
@@EugeValovirta230V thank you so much Euge, love and hugs from Italy 🔥🔥🔥🤘
🙏😎🤟
Hello Euge Valovirta. First of all thank you for the work on your interresting videos (thanks to your videos I recently get a second hand JCM800 from 1986, with the fadded tolex).
Ok, here I got a question : I never used pedal boost, and I would like to get into it. I'm interrested in the Boss SD1, but do you know the Xotic BB preamp ?
I will watch, right now, your video "Different gain pedals on my home studio pedalboard" to search information about the boss sd 1, but if you are interrested in making a video comparing the sd1 and the xotic bb preamp (and maybe some maxons..) I would be interreted.
bye
Cool man! SD-1 is my favourite od. Period 😎.

Лучший обзор на RUclips. 👍👍👍🎸

You're just hearing the difference in component values.... plain and simple
Exactly 👌.
New paint, nothing more. WAZA rules.
😁👍
this reminds me of the The Office meme: _they are the same picture_
😎👌
Euge and Ola... Viking have taken over again sorry Jared.
😎💪
I have a JAPAN 1984 SUPER Over Drive SD-1 that I Sometimes use together with my 1988 RAT Pedal . The Rat is my Favorite of the two pedals.
👌💪
The rat is a pedal people love to death or hate. I personally hate it's sound
LOVE YOU EUGE MY BRO...BUT NOT IN A GAY WAY...
