As a long-term Dragon Ball fan seeing the franchise losing it's edge was my biggest fear, but at the same time I always expected something similar to happen because there's something about Toriyama that all fans ignore: he hates drawing action and his true passion is comedy. And I'm not making shit up, he literally said that in a 2014 interview.

It's something I really do hate about him as a creator. Once DBZ went into space, it outgrew him. It became something other than what he was used to, because he just fucks around adding in random plot points _as the story progresses._ He had no plans for a space epic of any kind, and it became a space epic.
He's good at two things. Drawing comic strips, and bullshitting. I do appreciate & enjoy the DB franchise- just not toriyama.

I think Toriyama misses the way things used to be during the early Dragon Ball days before it got darker and full of transformations. That, and he doesn’t have his original editors to interfere with his original ideas, some of which made changes for the best, especially during the Cell Saga.
Nothing happens the same way twice and nostalgia can only satisfy fans for so long. But all that being said, I’m just hoping Daima can bring SOMETHING new to the table and at the very least be a lot better than how GT turned out. On the bright side, at least the anime will have more than enough content to adapt whenever they get back to doing Super.

    • @kindlingking

@@joaocbcneto well, "work" - it's still an arc that keeps jumping from one narrative/villain to the other without properly exploring either (like wouldn't it be interesting to learn more about Gero and his motivation? Or develop androids as characters more? Or go full in with Cell being a horror movie monster instead of turning him into a budget Frieza?), has lots of absurdities (senzu bean moment is the most famous one) and plot holes (the whole time travel thing) and introduces transformation creep, something that keeps plaguing Dragon Ball to this day. It's also super lazy in signature Toriyama style. Oh, I need a training arc in the middle of a villain goose chase? Bam, here's a magical room with distorted time flow that could've been very useful in previous arcs, bur of course only the current threat is dangerous enough. Wrote myself into a corner by twice by giving Cell too clear of a weakness? No problem, actually he can move his core within his body and can just zenkai into his perfect form without absorbing both artificial humans, from a self-destruction mind you. At least Goku realises what a terrible and oblivious father he was for Gohan throughout this arc. That's a highlight.

The biggest problem Super has is it's fast paced story style. Concepts get introduced, and they quickly just gun for the ending without really doing the proper legwork. The greatest examples of that are the TOP and UI transformation.
The TOP was cool, but it suffered major problems like who are most of these guys? The TOP should have been the grand finale to Super after many arcs of build up exploring the other universes. Since we didn't do that its just mindless action most of the time, which is fun but not really much else. We also have the consequence of just killing almost everything BOG introduced. Like how many of you guys honestly want to see an arc in Universe 2? Probably not a lot of you.
Then, with UI, I think it's pretty obvious. After Goku got it in the TOP, the next few arcs should be about Goku trying to achieve it again, learning and growing slowly until the big "Aha" moment somewhere down the road. Again because we didn't do that, now we have a situation where Goku is just too strong for the story. At the end of the Morro arc Goku was supposed to have a more stable UI than he did before yet somehow in the beginning of the Granolah arc he suddenly has all these problems that were never called up before.
Super has a lot of potential left but I think they threw a lot of it away. The biggest case in point is the fact that the most hype thing it has going for it is a Z villan thats returned like 3 times already in canon. The even bigger case in point is the nostalgia fest Super is now.

Yeah, I LOLd really hard when he said Toriyama is the most knowledgeable person about Dragon Ball.
Toriyama is well known for not caring all that much about it, never bothering to re-read his older stuff, and regularly forgetting details leading to plot holes or contradictions (or inessential but beloved side characters never ever being mentioned again, like Launch).
I believe with near-100% confidence that even the most casual of fans has more accurate factual knowledge about the lore and details of the story than Toriyama himself does.
Going 'well he's the author, he knows best' might seem intuitive and probably correct for most media, but in this situation it's just denying widely known reality, lmao.
I always complain that Toriyama (or Shueisha, or whoever is the ultimate owner of the IP) should just hire a fan or two to fact-check every new thing that he, the Toei writers, Toyotarou, or even video game writers come up with. Someone whose long-term investment in this fictional world can be safely assumed to be purely based on how much they genuinely love it, without any additional financial incentive like for anyone that directly profits from new Dragon Ball media being released.

That way young Pan could give us the goofy moments Kid Goku had and we wouldn't have a ridiculous power creep. Also keeping in line with the passing of the torch themes.
Goku would essentially be a "Master" type character like Roshi, Kami, Korin or King Kai but in his own way.

Usually, but not always, when I grab the manga/watch tne anime I can be more-or-less sure that I'll experience complete story with understandable canon. And that's great, because not only it is easier toget into a series like this, but also a series that respects its own canon is less likely to make writing blunders and so on, and so on. But with modern Dragon Ball, I am convinced that quite literally nothing matters in there anymore. Daima will most likely be no different, regardless of how much Toriyama will have fun with it.

Dragon Ball has multiple continuities with the original DB manga being the main storyline/continuity and Super being a sequel to that as the anime adaption is its own continuity but still canon. It's not that hard to follow what's "canon" or what isn't. Also since when was UI not apart of the movie continuities. What are you talking about? Every movie prior to Battle of Gods is canon and in the latest movie T.O.P was literally referenced so UI definitely exists.@@Yodah97

They just don’t want the situation that Goku dies in the middle of the production. Think team four star did great idea of showing a horrific part of buu that seems genuinely possible of having buu spawn mouths on his body sounding like gohan friends and family suffering, in pain, or scared beyond belief and it just gives absolute amazing idea of psychological horror along with chaotic evil that buu is. It was no coincidence Dr. Slump was his first hit manga, he treats it like his first born child, and always comes back to the silliness of it, even with his more serious series. Fans of DBZ on the other hand, have a different image in their head, they like the edgy out of this world power scaling aspect of it, not the grounded yet sometimes absurd humor Toriyama brings like Arale breaking the planet in half multiple times, and the next minute everything is back to normal while the sun is wearing sunglasses. Super had a de-aged Pilaf Gang as an "inversion" of GT, but this time it was difficult to digest because we never saw them as kids/teens before. The manga was only made to promote the anime (don't ask me how that works, I don't get it either). But this means there is no need to give the manga room to advance before starting Season 2. Season 1 was written and produced without using the manga as a guide.
This also means that the anime might skip the Moro and Granola arcs entirely. Seems unlikely to me, but they could do it. Especially if the manga gets cancelled.

I thought about something you said in this video regarding everyone turning into children again. Yes - Toriyama aged up a lot of the cast in order to make the fights better and demonstrate "progression", but haven't child warriors always been a part of Dragon Ball? Gohan is a small child for a majority of DBZ, Trunks returns in the Buu Saga as his present child version, Goten brought along some great moments with Trunks, and Gotenks is a fan favorite demonstrating that fights can still be very interesting with a child character involved. I understand it may be off-putting or polarizing to see our cast turned into children again (some for the very first time, which is fun), but to Toriyama's point - this could be very refreshing to Dragon Ball by having our characters depend on their martial arts and tools (like the Power Pole) instead of countless transformations and Ki Blasts. Just feels a little half baked of an argument that does lean more on the side of criticism rather than optimism in my opinion.
I'm a big fan of your content, but I think it's fair to argue both sides fairly.

They should have never given the franchise to Hollywood in the first place they don't understand the Dragon Ball lore and in modern day times I think Toriyama doesn't even know his own lore anymore since he's so forgetful.
Toriyama has full control over his project and he's going to do whatever he wants. As Dragon Ball Daima I really have no interest in seeing it and I was never really that big into the OG Dragon Ball I grew up with Dragon Ball Z first Dragon Ball GT was okay could have been better it has some of the cooler villains like Baby Vegeta and the shadow dragons plus Super Saiyan 4 was very creative and Dragon Ball super I thought was a downright piece of crap good ideas executed poorly and it had to rely on nostalgia instead of doing fresh ideas. They really need to do "Dragon Ball: Ultra" and show some time passage with UI Goku and UE Vegeta being equal-ish while it's really their *children* whom we're focused on. There may be a lot of questions we have as to what has happened in the last... say... 6-7 years since the ToP finished. Trunks and Goten weren't there to know, so we, the audience, are as unsure of the past -- and future -- as they are. What suspense that would bring, the opportunities to open up a new horrible past and form a terrifying new future from that.
And of course, Goku and Vegeta will never stop being important or developing, just, that development is more happening in the background whilst we observe their successors' burgeoning growth more closely. I think this is perfect. It gives almost everyone what they want, plus it's a good parallax on the passage of multiple stories as you have the much quicker-paced children moving things along in the foreground and the much slower-paced adults still growing, if menacingly, in the backdrop of all that passes.
    Sigh.

Idk man, not to sound negative but I genuinely don’t trust in toriyama cooking, modern dragon ball has fucked over many old and new characters that had good concepts and the stuff he wrote is especially worse than the original manga. Minus, broly, rof and even super hero are almost entirely written by him or supervised by him and those movies ruin/have alot of the bad traits in dragon ball(fights that have no impact and mean nothing, mid stories that overall don’t impact anything from it or later, transformations and fanservice just for the sake of it, and more) the only good thing that has come out from modern dragon that was written by him was battle of gods but that was because he ACTUALLY WENT BACK AND READ THROUGH THE SOURCE MATERIAL.
I don’t blame anyone who’s hyped for the upcoming stuff planned or even trusting in toriyama’s storytelling, more power to them. But personally speaking, i have nearly zero trust in his storytelling or in daima, but I’ll give it the benefit of the doubt when it drops and give it a watch as the character designer, director and staff are all individuals that i adore their work so hopefully it’ll at least look good and maybe, just maybe it’ll have a good story

Daima seems like an amazing concept and I've always been a fan of the more light-hearted SOL moments in dragon ball as they display really good world-building that the series doesn't often get due to its lack of perspective writing. Daima gives me the hype of early DBZ and late DB for some reason with the whole 'light-hearted 'till the fights roll out' vibe. Also from what I've seen, they probably wont stay children forever and will probably 80% revert back to adults somewhere throughout the series as they beat the main villains. Even if they remain as children right until the final scene, I'll still be hyped as hell because I love Dragon Ball as a series and not just for its big ass, cluster fuck fights (which are still the epitome of anime fight types IMO).

I was absolutely loving what Super was doing, especially with Superhero, Moro and Granolah. They made me actually like Broly so that was nice too (though it’s a different and better character that just shares a legacy name imo), and I also LOVED the growth done to present Trunks and Goten. Trunks being middling with technology and being more disenchanted with helming the family business and Goten being an aloof geek obsessed with all kinds of technology and video games was so cool to me. The antagonistic Trunks played off of the more blunt Goten in such a fun way in that prequel arc.
Daima kinda just reverted all of that and imo cuts off progress at the knees. It’s an open secret that Toriyama really only cares for stuff he has a large stake in creating, and his most fun work has to do with Kid Goku, but I think Daima is the result of giving the man too much creative power. You cannot reach an emotional core with literal baby characters, and the toriyama vibe is going to be much more whimsical and aimed at a kid audience. For all of the whining about Super’s more child oriented character jokes and scenes, I feel like we’re gonna get a ton of that in Daima. GT stans love their serious and grungy aesthetics and storytelling, and classic Z fans love their focus on serious action and violence. I have an inkling this might be a “under new management” situation for those that hate Super lol.
Overall though, despite me being a pretty big DBS fan, I’ll still check out Daima. I would’ve preferred a Super return obviously but as long as the manga continues to deliver I’ll live, and Daima’s premise seems fun especially if the other cast members actually get to contribute unlike in GT.

Was barely involved in Super but alright. Was a hack but created the most iconic manga series of all time in DB, got it 😂 Go watch another series if you hate the creator that created this franchise. I swear you DB "fans" are cancer

I hate Super with a burning passion for many, many reasons so seeing them veer away from that is so refreshing. Daima already looks so much more interesting than anything super's given me. Now of course this still has to be executed well and I need to see improvements to Toryima's flaws as a writer to truly get excited, but if done right this has the potential to fix alot of problems that have cropped up with Dragonball as a whole since Z ended. From anyone not Goku being sidelined, to the poor handling of Gohan, regressing charachters or making them act purely out of charachter in order to drive the plot , lackluster callbacks purely for fanservice with none of the emotional weight to have it mean something again, transformations feeling hollow and unearned with power levels getting obnoxiously high, causing many contrived plot points for how a hero beats a villian or opponent.
I can list them all day but the point is Super sucked just as much as GT and honestly commited alot of the same problems. Something NEEDED to change or dragonball would've fallen far in the public eye. My hope for this is that everyone involved recognizes their faults and are using this as a way to fix them so we can get actual awesome Dragonball Content from an anime tv show. I did love Battle of Gods and I have yet to watch the last two movies so I can't comment if they were good or bad, but the show needs a different direction.

Okay, so everyone is returned to being a 4 year old....Piccolo as a 4 year old was the villain of the Piccolo Junior arc in Dragon Ball. 4 year old Piccolo looks older than DBS Dende.

I enjoy og dragonball and going back to martial arts (and power pole) along with stakes being not so galactic would make for a fun time and I think thats where Toriyama wants to go to as well as to not have the ever growing goku problem and the escalation fans are so hungry for. Gohan SHOULDVE been the mc since namek cause that wouldve been a nice power reset/rebalance/goal but people complained about goku dying. Overall im hopeful for Daima but I do think that DBS needed to push the anime as the series is always on the edge of tipping it to the real potential it has (like trunks and goten doing something besides fusing)

I see as Diama as a good plan by the creators since it would be better for the manga to have more chapters released before animating it and end up catching up to the recent chapters. This was a problem SAO had where the animation caught up with the manga and had to be delayed due to having to wait for the manga chapters to be released. So I give praise for the DB creators

Super isn't based on the Manga though and it would be better for it to stay that way, so this wouldn't be a concern. I'll probably not bother watching Daima myself but the way I see it this could still be a good thing should Super come back at some point in the future, they could have Super be a bit more aimed towards adults while having Daima be more of a show for kids.

    • @stevenhiggins3055

The manga is already two arcs passed where the anime stopped and they're currently adapting the latest movie. If they adapt the Broly movie the way they did Battle of Goda and Return of F, they gives the anime *three whole arcs* before they have to worry about colliding with the manga. Hell, the anime can just do it's own adaptation of Super Hero too, giving them four arcs.
Not to mention, most anime these days only do one arc at a time, go on hiatus for a year or two then adapt the next arc. No reason Super can't do that. They can make a season 2 only on the Moro arc, take a break for a year, adapt the Granolah arc as season three, another year long break, Season 4 broly, wait a year, season 5 Super Hero, all while the manga continues to run. Anime fans get their fix, the manga gets to stay ahead so we don't get endless filler.

    • @GiuseppeG11
      @GiuseppeG11 Год назад +1

@@stevenhiggins3055 There wasn't endless filler before and the Anime has always been ahead of the Manga. No reason to start basing the Anime on the Manga now when there was no need for that when it first aired.

im happy nakatsuru is back as character designer. im looking forward to this, cant wait.
one of the reason db anime isnt continuing soon is alot of the animators are still doing other projects like one piece, sandman and more. once one piece is near its end, then they ll start

  • @generalowen4344
    @generalowen4344 Год назад +1

idk for me i'm so happy this got announced. if DBD is gonna finally fix the power creep DBS created, i'm all for it. characters need to think how to solve their problems instead of the "be more powerful" cliché. the characters need to feel weak in order to have stakes in the story. and having them turn to kids will of course dial their powers a lot to the point the risk factor returns. i know DBS did have some risks taken but there's always some bullshit that just removes it, Beerus suddenly not wanting to destroy Earth, Whis turning back time, Hit giving the win to Uni 7, Xeno dealing with Zamasu, and Goku turning ultra instinct like 3 times in 45 minutes tournament + A17 for some reason is alive after self destructing (so he can be the winner). these are literally all the arcs in DBS excluding the movies and manga. and i'm gonna pretend i didnt see the Z fighters go up in power level TREMENDOSLY in a very short time just so they can compete in the Tournament of power. I really miss the DBZ era where if you want to win you need to have sacrifices. in DBS, almost no sacrifices were had and the villains just lost without killing anyone important which is why it lacks character highlights. we don't have Vegita and Crillin's death in Frieza saga highlights, we don't have Nappa killing everyone highlights, we don't have A16's death pushing Gohan to his limits. and we definitely don't have Vegita destroying himself after realizing what he did. while i doubt moments like those will return with DBD (because DB franchise just became much softer especially in the anime) i still think there will be risk factors and the characters will have to think before they just punch their way through any obstacles.

Unpopular opinion: There's a lot of potential in Dragon Ball Daima. And if this turns out to be the death of Super, while still being a good show... I won't be sad.
What I want is a Dragon Ball show that shakes up the status quo. And DBS is very much a status quo show. Apart from aging up Goten and Trunks (which only happened recently in the manga... but they were already adult at the end of Z... so aging them up is hardly a step forward) DBS never really furthered the story. It's in essence a mix between a sitcom and a monster of the week show. The monsters just last arcs instead of episodes. And I really enjoyed the DBS anime. But aside from the movies, I don't really need to see it again.
Dragon Ball Daima's idea of de-aging the characters sounds weird, yes. But if it means Goku can travel to other realms and fight enemies in OG DB style...? Now THAT sounds more like a shake up of the status quo! Let's just see how this plays out.
