    1. You might want to add a V-TAB. Vertical - Tactical Adjustable Buttstock allows you to vertically adjust your buttstock on the go as well as have 12 degrees of unrestricted cant. You also have the option to lock the vertical height when you find the setting that works for you. Whether your prone, kneeling, standing or bench shooting there is a comfortable setting for you in seconds that will allow you to achieve the best possible shot.
    2. Another recommendation. Prior to 'loading the bipod' on the ground, remove rubber feet and replace with cleat or spike feet on your bipod. Take your knife and dig a hole into the ground. Place your bipod cleat feet into the hole, then, 'load the bipod.'

    • @paramounttactical
      @paramounttactical  Год назад +2

      I appreciate the recommendation on the VTAB. I'm not aware of this product and will have to check it out. Whether you use rubber feet or the claws is dependent on what you're shooting off of. I wanted to stay focused on rifle setup and avoided getting too far into peripheral gear. It's good advice either way.
      I'll definitely check out the VTAB. Thanks for watching!

    • @stefanschug5490
      @stefanschug5490 Год назад

      It is not necessarily being stuck in the old ways! It totally depends on what kind of shooting you are doing. When you want to shoot driven wild boars that come often running very fast through uneven terrain and with narrow shooting lanes, you need a rifle that fits like a glove with a 1x scope or a red dot mounted very low. Gary's setup and equipment serves a totally different purpose, but you would not stand a chance with that rifle and scope if quick shots were required on fast moving targets close-up and personal.

      For the discussed long range shooting in the video, Gary is absolutely right, but for other purposes and shooting disciplines, high mounted scopes are counterproductive and often disadvantageous! In my 50 years of hunting, shooting and reloading and after killing hundreds of boars on the run, as well as participating in many 1000 yard matches, I have a glimpse of, what equipment is working for what particular purpose. You might differ in your opinion, but don't tell me I did watch the wrong video, when I comment on: "stuck in the old way!"

      It worked for quals but didn’t account for recoil management and follow up shots. But yes, the military gets a LOT wrong. Even in SOCOM. As we started to get outside instruction/bringing high caliber trainers in it became very obvious. I’ve learned more about shooting when I got out and am a much better shooter than I was when I was in SF with almost unlimited ammo.

    Outstanding video! The only suggestion I would throw out for consideration is that a million years ago when I was trained as a police marksman by an Army Master Sniper, he combined the rifle setup and the scope mounting as a whole process. First we focused the reticle, then roughly positioned just the bottom rings and lay the scope in them like a tray as you mount the gun. Then your spotter can slide the scope back and forth to help you find your correct eye relief while you are in a solid prone shooting position. sliding that scope forward will help prevent you from having to crank the butt pad out so much to compensate. The assistant can help you find the best rail slots for the rings to cradle wide enough apart for strong scope support, and slide that tube forward and back to get proper eye relief. Now you can note which rails you used and the tube eye relief position by marking the edge of the tube with a pencil to note its position by a ring. If you still need more eye relief you can then adjust the recoil pad out - but you will not need as much. We can then crank up to set the height for the cheek rest as well. After these steps were done we had positive information as to where that tube and rings should actually be to fit that specific shooter, so they could then get up off the rifle and go through the scope leveling process that you described so well. Treating stock adjustment and optic mounting as a combined process helped us achieve proper position and hold with natural alignment - Those being the first two marksmanship principles in our Canadian system. That was our process way back in 1986.

    • @paramounttactical
      @paramounttactical  11 месяцев назад

      Ring height alone wouldn’t account for that. Typically when someone runs out of negative elevation it’s due to too much mechanical elevation. Is your scope base a 20 MOA base? Is your higher mount a 20 MOA mount?
      When I have clients or subscribers reach out with negative elevation issues it’s usually because they stacked a 20 MOA mount with a 20 MOA base.

    I set the retical differently. I shoot 1000 yard completion. When I set the diaopter the way you describe I catch myself focusing on the retical. What happens is when I'm looking at a target 1000 yards away , to see the retical clearly I find myself focusing back and forth from the target it the retical. What I now do is set up on a target at 1000 yards and adjust the retical so that when looking at the target the retical is clear and in the same eye box as my target. Hence I see both at the same time clearly.

    • @paramounttactical
      @paramounttactical  Год назад

      Like I said, people do it differently. People’s eyes are different. I’ve been setting diopter the way I’ve described since 2004 when I went to sniper school and regularly shoot at multiple distances out to a thousand and beyond and never have the issues you just described. Some of it is based on physiology, some of it is also psychological.

    Taller height over bore requires less moa/mill dial in. The downside is you use a chin weld rather than a cheek weld. That can be less weight on the rear of the rifle pushing towards the bag. An upside is it's better for mutlipal shooting positions. Ie prone versus on a bench rest.

    • @paramounttactical
      @paramounttactical  Год назад

      I disagree with you on the chin/cheek weld point. That is true if using an traditional stock but even with higher rings you can get an appropriate and good cheek weld on an adjustable cheek riser. With lower rings most people have to turn their head more perpendicular to the gun to get their eye low enough to line up with the ocular lens using their cheek as a fulcrum. That actually results in a weird and improper cheek weld along with neck strain. The real problem is that most people end up with a scope mounted too low to get proper alignment or proper cheek weld. I always enjoy these discussions/debates. Thanks for watching.

      @@paramounttactical , I agree with your stance on low rings. Actually I agree with the premise that you are promoting here. I'm just stating the obvious about the points. The low rings not only put you in a contorted position, but it gets worse as you go from a bench to prone. Various shooting positions a chin weld in the worst case would be preferable in many disciplines.

      Do you mean actively shooting with a sling?
      Ultimately the principle regardless of shooting position, prone, standing, bench, etc… is you adjust the gun and optic so that when you get into position, you’re comfortable and everything falls into alignment.
      But, you’re only going to get this perfect in one position. So if you primarily shoot prone adjust the rifle for that. If and when you move to a different type of position there may be some minor adjustments or compromises you have to make.
      Thanks,
      Gary

    Id really like to see someone test high vs low scope ring on a modern vs oldschool stock.
    I am not saying confort is not the priority but that oldschool guns were used for close range hunting where scope height can matter...
    _A 20+ inch scope ring has to make you hit very low at 10 yards?!_

    • @paramounttactical
      @paramounttactical  Год назад +1

      At close range it’s simple mechanical offset. Just like if you’re shooting an AR. If you zeroed at 25yds that’s where POA/POI converge. As you move closer, point blank out to 5-10 yards you have the mechanical offset of optic to bore. If the optic is 2.5” above bore then at 0 to around 10 yards you’ll be impacting 2.5” low. As you move back to your zero distance that mechanical offset will close until you get to your zero distance.
      Thanks for watching!

    How do we know which rings to get for proper height for our scope? Is it the rifle or the scope that determines that? Or is it just us, how comfortable we are on the rifle?
    Do either of those have recommendations?

    Curios to know what the difference between sight height and sight offset is. I downloaded a ballistic app that’s asking the sight height and sight offset for a specific gun and I’m not sure how to calculate that.

    • @paramounttactical
      @paramounttactical  Год назад

      Sight offset is angular. Meaning is your optic off to the side. It’s not. Don’t worry about that one. Sight height is height over bore.

    Are the principles articulated in this video for adjusting for eye relief the same for an AR/LPVO combo? I’m finding that I’m straining my neck to get the proper distance from the optic!

    What about pivoting the check pad. Does that torque and cause misses?

    • @paramounttactical
      @paramounttactical  8 месяцев назад

      It depends on the cheek pad. You can try it to see if it’s comfortable. If you close your eyes, mount the rifle and helps you be more comfortable and then open your eyes and your aligned with gun and optic, you’re good.

    Hello Gary, I'm a couple of days away from setting up my first long range rifle. I've watched your videos on mounting optics and I have a question. I'm a big guy (6'4" with a long length of pull) and I'm wondering about how to get close on the stock adjustments BEFORE I mount the optic to prevent from running out of adjustment after the optic is mounted? If that makes sense. I really enjoy learning from your videos! Thanks!

    • @paramounttactical
      @paramounttactical  7 месяцев назад

      Great to hear man! I’m excited for you.
      Depends on what you mean by “length of pull”. The only thing I concern myself with is mounting the gun and ensuring the optic, butt stock, and cheek riser are positioned where I can mount the gun properly and get proper eye relief. The idea of “length of pull” where you adjust it from the crook of your elbow to your trigger is antiquated and a non factor.
      If your eye relief is good and your cheek and head position is good, you’re fine.
      If your butt stock is adjustable, start with it half to 3/4 extended. Mount and level your optic with your mount/rings mid pic rail. Now that your optic is level and in the rings, get behind your gun and check eye relief. You should be able to adjust your butt stock and you can move your mount/rings forward and back a position or two to perfect it. Between the few spaces forward and back on your base and the adjustment in your butt stock, you should be able to find the perfect position.
      Hope that helps!
      -Gary

    the taller the HOB the more acute the angle of the firing solution at the point of aim/impact, yes?

    • @paramounttactical
      @paramounttactical  4 месяца назад +1

      Yes but it’s so small that it’s all but irrelevant. It’s not that acute. MDT has a video where they used like a 20” HOB. It is shocking how little it changed. Trying to get as low of a HOB as possible gives you no advantage and only ends in sore necks and misses.
      Thanks for watching.

      I'll go find the video. I do concur that within the "normal" range of possible HOB locations to fit any given human well, it is likely not a material concern. That said, it has been dog years since I've studied the topic. Thank you for your practical, no BS methodology and communications style.

    just curious on the MPA chassis like the BA comp and ESR, do they natively work with the AICS and AW magazines? or do you have to buy an adjustable magazine catch? or is the chassis only compatible with one or the other?

    Question about optic mount height. I had just gotten a badger Ordinance Condition one 1.70" 34mm mount for a vortex Razor gen3 1-10x lpvo that I was going to put on one of my ARs. Hated the scope from the get go and got rid of it. The vortex Razor gen2 4.5-27 is also a 34mm tube that I have for my LMT 6.5cr MWS. I think it's OK but do you think I should get a 1.54" version instead?

    • @paramounttactical
      @paramounttactical  2 месяца назад +1

      With an AR you need a cantilever mount and typically want around 1.5” height.
      The 1.4 offset is the one I recommend, sell, and I use on all my ARs.
