    What do YOU think of The Twin Snakes? Is it a good remake, or even a good game?

      As a remake that updates already existing work, I’d have to disagree. But I definitely agree on the sentiment that its heart was in the right place and if it was by itself, it wouldn’t be so bad!

    People rag on Twin Snakes for being over the top as if MGS3 doesn't have a guy covered in bees throwing anime poses, and MGS4 doesn't have a cyborg ninja dancing the bolero with a robot lizard.

      True but MGS3 was in the muddle of the franchises evolution where each game did something in it that set a new standard. Applying it back to MGS1 oversteps on what it was and what made it special. It doesn't represent the game well, it should be treated like a novelty or extra in my opinion

    • @meganimanic

      Twin Snakes came out before either of those, though, and I don’t like those aspects of MGS3 & 4, either. Granted, they do way more to offset some of the silliness, which is more than TS does. You could be picky about each game if you wanted to, but Twin Snakes does it constantly, in every scene, in every encounter. At least in MGS3 and beyond it’s confined to a couple of scenes spread through the entire game.

    twin snakes makes mgs1 playable for me, I do like the drama of the original but the shot graphics outweigh the nuanced voice acting. I also thing psycho mantis looks too sick and there is actually a lot of epic stuff about twin snakes, so much that i think people look over twin snakes with a biased perspective, punching down on something that actually slaps because its an easy kill. You even mentioned the electrocution part which most people think sucks and now its suddenly so crucial to immersion. Twin snakes is actually an amazing and rare experience i wish they would port to new systems.

    Hard to pin the blame on this remake when it was Hideo himself that wanted shit over the top. Infact they almost did it one to one but Hideo was against it. Granted the dude from Silicon Knights may have been the few people of over surpass Hideo in Ego.

      A lot of the problems I have with Twin Snakes stem from the cutscenes and the voice work, so in that regard I definitely agree. I have no idea why Kojima wanted the game to look this way, probably just because he didn’t want the 1:1 recreation to compete with the original, but I think the overcorrection is what ruined it for me. Maybe one day we’ll see a faithful adaptation that tries a little harder. Till then, we have… this.

      I WISH I could like Twin Snakes more than I do. The gameplay is the only thing that I like about it. I think it destroys the spirit of the original, with its flat voice acting, simplistic level design, and grating soundtrack. It LOOKS good, but that’s really the only thing it has going for it. To me, anyway.

      @@meganimanic your description at 11:30 makes me think you are talking about Reisdent Evil 2 Re-Imagined.
      Everything you said about MGS TTS would also apply to Resident Evil 2 Re-Imagined as it was a very bad re-imaging when compared to the original RE2.
      As for TTS yes it has tons of flaws and some of the cutscenes are a bit on the crazy side. It is also a lot easier than MGS.

    All in all I'm glad it exists and like it for what it is. if they end up doing a better remake of MGS, awesome amazing I'm excited to play it. But i just assume if they do remake part 1 it's going to be how they're doing snake eater and they would probably try and use twin snakes as the base for the remaster. IF they can get the go ahead from nintendo which will probably be to costly to justify which probably why they started with MGS3

    • @meganimanic
      @meganimanic  Месяц назад

      @@Darkrift666 If they remake MGS1, then it needs to be extra crispy. I don’t want a 1:1 recreation of the game, I’m willing to do extra and other things in the game as long as it still hits the same story beats and it doesn’t alter the entire narrative too much. But I would expect it to look and play similar to MGSD and MGSV. As long as Shadow Moses looks like Shadow Moses, and the voice actors actually sound like they give a damn, and the game isn’t ridiculously easy, then it’s a win for me.

    When you think of this game as Otacon's re-telling of the Shadow Moses incident it makes infinitely more sense.

    • @meganimanic
      @meganimanic  2 месяца назад +1

      My favorite two theories are that TTS is either Otacon’s retelling of the incident to his coworkers at Philanthropy or Sunny, or is Raiden’s VR Training of the incident to prep him for the S3 plan.
      Both are wild and convenient in-canon explanations for this games existence, but without confirmation of either context, it’s kind of just a crazy coincidence haha

    I do not like Snake's suit redesign in this game or the soundtrack. The original OST was perfect and added so much to the cold atmosphere of the game.
    Nothing beats the original's stellar voicework, either. MGS1 was Hayter's best rendition of Snake, IMO.

    MGS1 was probably one of THE best games for the PlayStation and is adored by many fans.
    Twin Snakes upgrades the game to the MGS2 engine but where it fails is not adding new challenges for the upgraded mechanics and tries to stay true to the original to a fault in this regard. Which is bizarre when they changed the soundtrack and added cut-scenes and re-recorded voice tracks.
    It’s not a BAD game, the graphics are a welcome upgrade, the controls are unified with the other MGS games in the series making it easier to jump from one to the other.
    It’s the comparison that highlights how good MGS1 actually is, it’s lightning in a bottle that not easy to replicate.
    Twin snakes tries but falls flat.

      To me, as a game, Twin Snakes is just not good. There’s so many things objectively wrong with it that I can’t sit back and have an enjoyable experience. Every few minutes I have to point something out or groan when something happens, and it makes me play the game in greater intervals.
      The graphics and presentation are really the only thing going for it, to me. It LOOKS better than PS1 Shadow Moses. But, that’s it.
      I wish I liked this game as much as other people do, they seem really passionate about it. But I just can’t get past the warts all over this thing. 😭

    • @jesseslinger6867
      @jesseslinger6867 2 месяца назад

      @meganimanic I get that. Most remakes aren't as good as the originals. For example, Resident Evil 4 was a hallmark in game design in 2004, a truly revolutionary game. But the remake is just a third-person shooter with some minor exploration and inventory management. The game never had any good puzzles to carry it besides the action gameplay. The clunkiness of the original compared to today's standards was part of its charm, and you can see how far games have come throughout the years. All of that has gone out the window with the remake and its modernization plus the removal of several dialogue lines and other changes.

    Idk based on the coQmment section here it seems most fans actually like Twin Snakes?? Probably bc this video even though its your opinion is flawed and seems biased. Youve admitted in other comments you dont like the direction the action took in the series. Mgs2 3 and 4 all had over the top "anime" action so it seems like the series was always meant to be seen this way. Another point people always seem to forget is 1st person controls were new at the time for many gamers and id say about 50% of people i see play Mgs2 still struggle with the 1st person, imagine 2004 when alot fewer players were competent at 1st person controls

    • @meganimanic
      @meganimanic  Месяц назад

      Well, that’s the thing about making “hot take” videos like this. Not everyone is gonna agree, and even more people will leave a comment about it. There was a good amount of praise for this game upon release, but I’ve seen a vocal portion rise up recently about a negative retrospect for the game. I dunno. I guess I’m just a part of that perception and wanted to make a video about it.
      And you’re right, I also don’t like the crazy acrobatics, I think it takes a fair bit away from the specific atmosphere that the first game had. But the thing about the action scenes in future games is that it was always relegated to characters with certain personalities and abilities. Can you imagine if MGS3 Naked Snake did backflips to avoid The End’s sniper fire? Or if Old Snake ran toward and bounced off RAY during the Shadow Moses showdown? It’s always characters like Vamp or Cyborg Raiden that do the insane action sequences, and they aren’t so frequent as in Twin Snakes. They exist in other games, sure, but they’re relegated to certain scenes throughout a whole game. They had a purpose. Twin Snakes did it cause they looked cool. Not the same.

      @meganimanic overall I just think most people that dislike this remake, forget the point of this remake in particular, it's for a new audience, it wasn't made to replace mgs1 like alot of remakes today, It was a gamecube exclusive made in a time where games were transitioning to what it is today. While I'll agree some of snakes acrobatics are alittle over the top but I think they're trying to portray snake at his peak. I also agree the music is also worse but like you said they didn't want to spend a full budget on a remake. Your last point about the game being a companion piece is really how i see it. The master collection has shown that some gamers struggle with older generation of games for various reasons and I think any entry way to get them into the series is good bc it'll improve the chance they go back and play the original, which has always been the definitive edition to spite what a marketing team put on the back of a box to sell

      If the point of a remake is to enhance what was there with new technological capabilities while still capturing the magic of the original, then Twin Snakes has failed in this regard. I think even if the game was standalone, without the first having existed, it would still face similar criticism for being too easy and having unnecessarily chaotic action scenes. There are things the game gets right, but I don’t think it’s enough to call it a good remake.

      Technical in the sense that the mechanics and level design don’t mesh well, like the new functions from MGS2 fundamentally break the simpler level design of MGS1 and make the game too easy, on even the harder difficulties.
