When Captain America was introduced by Simon & Kirby in the 1940s it was (to me) just another comic book character, fighting the bad guys, with a kid sidekick.
When Lee & Kirby revived Cap in 1963, he had a mythic status as an extraordinary World War II figure, and writers built on that, making him appear one of the greatest heroes of all time.
