how to reprogram Curtis 1268 controller using 1314 software, USB serial converter, and home made cable (DB9 to 4 pin mini molex) .

This is really good information but very hard to see. If you have time maybe redo with buddy to hold camera and use more light and links to where to get programming and hardware.

Did you need to invert any of the signals to the controller? I have a 1206ac-5201 but am unable to connect with a USB to TTL cable; 0-5v.

There are two types of controllers:
older ones work with pure RS232 signals (-12 to +12V) so you need normal rs232 converter with homemade cable and it works with software 1314-4401 ,
newer ones work with 5V TTL inverted signal and also signature(PID,VID) of converter probably needs to be changed and it works only with 1314-4402 software.
I think you should try with normal rs232 converter,not the 5v
