a "general lack of understanding" would pretty much equate to 'ignorance. Under law, 'ignorance is no excuse' in wrongdoing.
The fact they're still considered classified tells you that he didn't "declassiffy" any of them.
You don't know shit about classified documents. Here let me educate you. The National archives was there in June. They took BOXES of documents. Some of which they were not entitled to. Then they told Trump to put the rest in a room and put a strong padlock on it. Now Mar-a-Lago is not a public place where there documents are stored. People just can't go in the and look through shit. The crap you hear about Trump not listening to his advisers and lawyers are LIES!!! There is no proof of this!! Otherwise prove me wrong.
Now the President is a special person. Special people have special powers. You get that? One of these powers is to declassify documents. There is NO SET PROCEDURE for enabling these powers. Trump can wave a wand over documents and they will be declassified. Therefore there are no markings on these documents to show they are declassified. If Trump has these documents in his possession then he is entitled to them as they are declassified. This will all come to light soon.
Not how it works. Any President has the ultimate authority to Declassify even the most Top Secret of documents. He gets that power from our Constitution as Head of the Executive Branch, And he actually doesn't have to tell anyone. If he doesn't then they are still treated as classified BY EVERYBODY ELSE in intelligence.
What this is actually about is whether Trump must give the documents to the National Archive. The only reason he would have to is the Presidential Records Act that Congress passed after Nixon. But the Presidential Records Act leaves it up to the President on how to sort, or store any documents created by, or for, the President. Further, the PRA has no enforcement provision, so any President can do pretty much whatever with those documents except destroy them, but that is due to another law.
Also, our Presidents don't have to report to any underlings of theirs. It would be courteous to tell the correct paper pusher that he declassified a document, but he just does not have to. There is no Law or rule that says so. So, the Democrats are trying to say he had information that if it fell into the wrong hands could harm the USA. But back in June the Justice Department was there and saw how the documents in question were being stored. And they only told him to add ONE, JUST ONE more lock to the storage room. And he did. But then they raided his home and cut off the very lock they told him to buy.

There's a reason why Trump is having a hard time finding good lawyers to represent him. His past lawyers say he was nearly impossible to represent and that it would be unclear if they would ever get paid.

Trump famously shortchanged many small businesses on the money he owed them. The list includes companies that worked on Trump’s properties or supplied him with chandeliers, pianos, marble, and other luxury touches. But Trump also tried to underpay the very same lawyers who helped him save money, and some ended up suing their former client Trump.
The Atlantic City law firm of Levine Staller saved one of Trump’s companies tens of millions of dollars in taxes-and then sued the company, Trump Entertainment, after the business tried to pay Levine Staller $1.25 million less than the firm was owed.
In 2012, Levine Staller won a settlement that returned $35 million in overpaid taxes and cut $15 million from Trump Entertainment's future liabilities, leading to a total savings of $50 million for the corporation. Trump agreed to pay $7.25 million to the law firm in legal fees, but then only paid Levine Staller $6 million before trying to claim the rest as unsecured debt in ongoing bankruptcy proceedings. In response, Levine Staller sued its former client, Trump Entertainment, and in 2014, a judge rejected Trump Entertainment’s request to be absolved of this debt and told the company to pay up.
It wasn’t an isolated case. Trump underpaid at least four law firms or lawyers who worked for him. One of them, Morrison Cohen LLP of New York City, had represented Trump in a lawsuit against a construction contractor that Trump claimed had overcharged him for work on a golf course. According to USA Today, Trump sued Morrison Cohen for using the case to help promote its work, and the firm countersued for almost $500,000 in unpaid bills. The case was settled in 2009.
It wasn’t just big amounts Trump tried to get out of paying, either. Bill Scherer, a lawyer in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, had to sue Trump in 1994 to collect $5,000 in unpaid legal bills from a case Scherer won for the billionaire. The lawyer told Reuters last year that he had offered Trump a low rate to “curry favor” with the mogul, but still had to sue. “He’s a deadbeat,” Scherer told South Florida’s Sun-Sentinel newspaper. Trump told Reuters that he couldn’t remember Scherer or the case at all. 🤣🤣

Bottom line is those documents were government documents and they did not belong to him.
The thing that is missing in these stories about classified documents is just because you have a security clearance doesn’t mean you get to demand to see any documents at any time. You must have the proper security clearance and a NEED TO KNOW. That’s a big hurdle in most cases.😃
That's a big part of the "Compartmented" thing.
So many people do not know this. Even here in Huntsville, the POTUS can not walk in and demand to see everything just because he thinks he can. Any document controller knows it takes more than one person's approval for certain documents. Also at a certain level the document comes with personnel that will not leave you alone with documents at this high level. The carelessness at the White House with Trump was beyond belief.
