    How can people think it's a choice? I'm straight and couldn't possibly choose who I'm attracted to. It's the same with them. The amazing feeling I get when I'm with a girl I like is the exact same thing that they get when they're with a man they like. You can't fake that. I can't wait until homophobia is completely gone from this world. Which it will be eventually.

      Sabiancym damn right. I was actually physically hurt by someone I was directly answerable to at work many years ago, someone who was meant to look out for the well-being of his team and be professional at all times. He was anything but. And all because of his Eastern European Catholic upbringing. The type of homophobe that would actually get physically abusive to impose his beliefs on others. One of the worst kinds of homophobes out there. Plus he is a misogynist too, which made things even worse, because I am both of the things he hates (and doesn't understand).

      Like someone said above, I don't think the use of the word 'lifestyle' was meant to belittle or imply that being gay is a choice, I think that's just a phrase that many of the older generations are familiar with. Yes, it is problematic, but I don't think it was meant with any malice or negative intent.

    • @jasonsjustbetter2037

      Although I don't support the LGBT community I still think that homophobia and what not will always be on the earth just like racism will always be here most likely there is no way to truly get rid of it but there is like way still kind of like help that their cause pretty much

    • @johnm84
      @johnm84 2 года назад

      It can be a choice. People can choose to be gay. Peoples sexuality can change over time. Another thing and that is homophobia will never go away entirely just as racism sexism and other types of prejudice will never go away entirely. There will always be prejudice.

    Why don't people understand its not a choice ?.... who would like to choose a 'lifestyle' of mental suffocation and fear of rejection ?...no one would...

  • @mimmar3891

    Agreed. "The gay lifestyle" is a phrase invented by the religious right to try to justify their belief that it's some kind of choice. But it seems like Neil's dad has come a long way, so that's good. Old habits die hard when it comes to using phrases like that.

  • @fuddog
    @fuddog 10 лет назад +18

    It's hard for some people to wrap their minds around something like this. Yes homosexuality is evident and we know it exists, but you gotta understand the background his dad grew up in. Accepting gay people is harder for the older generations.

    See you can be critical and supportive. They are a very strong and open-minded example, honest, not pseudo-tolerant parents! It's very good they discuss their struggles, too! It's important, you can't just label somebody discriminatory who's not entirely comfortable with such a surprise right away. *That* would be narrow-minded and uncomprehending! Instead it's important to talk. Inspiring people up there! 👏👏

    There is so much hope right now! I was raised in a very right wing religious home and was taught that being gay was unnatural and a sin. I'm now a strong advocate for gay marriage! And I know others like me. Just a few years ago we never would have dreamed that we'd have nine states with gay marriage here in the US, with more on the way. I would very much agree that you should have hope! Even gay people without accepting parents should be encouraged that things keep improving.

Sometimes the parents really are quite surprised. The son or daughter has had this thought germinating in their mind for years, about whom they might be, but if the parents have not seen any clues, the revelation does drop like a bomb, and it takes awhile for them to form a new picture of love for their child.

    The key is really acceptance. For the parents of a gay child, it is quite a big disappointment for them and they harbor these doubts about themselves but the issue won't go away until you accept it and opt to understand fully how your gay child is feeling. Still, as parents, your main responsibility is to provide a safe haven, protect your child from harm--not just physically but emotionally. Your task is to provide that loving environment for your child to feel loved and raised him/her with a happy childhood and good education until adulthood...till they're ready and equipped to lead his/her own life.

    I don’t think any straight parents hope their kids will be gay, but the moment one becomes a parent is the moment that it’s no longer about the parent and it becomes about the child. So parents have to love their children regardless of whether they agree with the choices their children make. That can be hard for parents! It’s about relinquishing control.

    It's harder for everyone, not just harder for dads, you wake up one day getting ready to go to work, you are just about to leave the house, then you remembered that your son had asked to get you something on your way back from work, saying to your self I better check before I leave and go and ask him, you knock the door of his bedroom then you enter then OOps, a guy you know that's your son's mate, in an awkward position with your son, is this normal? I am trying to tell a real story that happened with one of my friends at work.

      You should take into consideration that old people find homosexuality difficult to deal with. Not because they are homophobic, but they were educated in a different way. We dont have to judge them, we have to educate them so they can understand that being gay it is not a choice.
