  • How to open and change a sargent and greenleaf dial for a gun / fire safe. Terry Pratt, the owner of Sturdy Gun Safe Mfg (www.sturdysafe.com) , is teaching. ANOTHER WARNING! Some safe manufacturers void the warranty if the combo is changed, but not Sturdy Safe.

    Great video, but a few things what I wish were mentioned. First: As long as you DO NOT shut your door, you can reset the combination if your new one isn’t working. Let people know that their are tutorial videos showing how to remove the back of the Sargent & Greenleaf (S&G) lock and taking a few easy steps to change an unknown combination.
    I knew this might be a problem if I made an error putting in my new combination so I looked up other videos before hand. As I predicted I screwed up the first time and neither my new nor old combination worked. Popped the back off the lock, manually lined up a few things and I was back in business.
    Second: Let people know that most safe brands use these S&G combination locks. I feel dumb, but it took me a little while to realize that the safe manufacturer, and the manufacturer of the combination locks aren’t the same.
    Anyways you did a great job, and saved me $150 on getting a locksmith, and possibly 1,000s in property that could have been stolen.

    FYI-there ARE also forbidden zones in safe locks if properly splined don't set the last number between 90 and 20. You can cause a lockout situation if not followed!

    Thanks here's the LABEL we're putting on our safe: Label:
    Unlock
    Sequence:
    LEFT-4
    RIGHT-3
    LEFT-2
    RIGHT-1
    UNLOCK:
    -1st Secret #: Turn Dial LEFT (counter-clockwise):
    Stop on its 4th* passing.
    -2nd secret #: Dial RIGHT (clockwise):
    Stop on its 3rd passing.
    -3rd Secret #: Dial LEFT (counter-clockwise):
    Stop on its 2nd passing.
    -Dial RIGHT (clockwise):
    To a hard, Lock Retracted, Stop (#86).
    -Turn Handle Right, to Open Door Dead Bolts.
    Notes:
    *When Starting the 1st secret #, More passes are allowable.
    Also Less passes may be allowable, IF the Dial was turned Left enough, when previously locked.
    The 12 o’clock “Opening Index” crows-foot mark is where you must align and stop your secret # precisely under.
    The 11 o’clock mark to the left is the “Changing Index”, used during a combination change.
    So you don’t dial past a #, slow down to “Sneak Up” on it.
    You Must Start Open Directions All Over IF:
    1. When dialing the 2nd or 3rd Secret numbers, when you should have stopped, you pass them.
    2. You turn the dial in the wrong direction/try to “back up” to a missed/passed number.
    LOCK:
    1. Close Door.
    2. Turn Dial to the Left, At Least 4 Full Revolutions.
    Depository Drop Hopper
    Combo Change
    Key Insert Hole
    Dead Bolts Manual
    Deployment Switch

    This is a great generic video, but lookup your specific model of S & G lock on their website and follow the directions for your model exactly.
    I have the R6700. It had an additional step not shown in this video. After setting the new combination on the change index, I had to move the dial to the right 10 numbers before removing the change key.

    I changed the combination and it worked fine for several times. The the hubby attempted the new combination and the safe opened, but now the dial sticks and won't lock. I can move the handle to lock, but the dial won't spin to keep if from unlocking. I was able to get it to spin a couple of times, but now not at all. Any suggestions?

    • @Miyatafixie
      @Miyatafixie 9 лет назад +2

      You may have violated the third number rule. This video does not mention that the third number cannot be between 0 and 20. This is because of the way the lock works. Violation of that rule will cause the problem that you describe.

    • @Miyatafixie
      @Miyatafixie 9 лет назад +1

      Also, as this video does not explain, NEVER close your door after a combo change until you have worked the combination at lease 3 times to make sure that the new combination was put in properly and that the lock will open once the door is closed and locked.

    • @rayneht9344
      @rayneht9344 9 лет назад

      Miyatafixie I did the combination several times before I actually closed the door and it worked fine. But after closing it, the problem started. Looks like we did violate the third number rule. Is ther a fix for this, or do I need to call a locksmith?

    • @rayneht9344
      @rayneht9344 9 лет назад

      Rayneht The dail moves enough to allow me to lock the door, then use the key to lock the dial.

    • @Miyatafixie
      @Miyatafixie 9 лет назад +1

      Rayneht
      To make sure that I understand your problem correctly, you can get the door to open and close, it is just that you cannot get the lock to spin and lock the safe. If that is correct, then what you must do is open the door and take off the back of the lock. Then you must manually turn the wheels to align them so that the change key can be inserted when you put the back of the lock on again. The change key has to fit into the square holes in the wheels. Turning the square holes unlocks the inner part of the wheel from the outer part. By changing the relative position of the inner part of the wheel to the outer part is what changes the number for that wheel. When you have the wheels aligned and the back on again, you can now insert the change key and put in a new combination. Do not unlock the wheels before putting the back of the lock on again and remember the third number rule.

    Thank you for the tips, Irish...hopefully Sturdy will add this to any instructions, though they can see it here.
    Question for you. Is dialing too fast an issue? I am not talking 9,650 RPMs...just a quick dial?

    • @HK-qj4im
      @HK-qj4im 5 лет назад

      If you spin to fast..
      You can make the dials float past your number.
      Do not spin fast when setting up your new combination.
      But..
      If you can do it..
      And open your safe, it will not hurt anything.
