Minn Kota Ulterra power trim issue and fix

  • The power trim would stop working after a few minutes and start working again (for a few minutes) after powering it off and back on. This would also keep it from stowing and deploying. The remote would say stowing and deploying but nothing was happening with the motor. The issue was in the contacts of the power trim module itself. Behind the contact plate the black wire was barely making contact with the plate most likely causing a high resistance or low voltage error in the trim module. I re-soldered the wire back on and haven’t had an issue since. I bet after two years of bouncing around and wacking a dock a few times put a lot of strain on that connection causing it to fail.

    Thanks a lot for your video. I had de same issue with my Ulterra. For a year I have been searching what the problem could be. I took the trimmingmotor apart and indead, in my case, the red wire had come loose. I repared it and the motor works perfect.
    Without your video I would never had managed it.
    Cheers, Ruud from The Netherlands.

    My Ulterra failed during a stow... Stopped about halfway up while trimming up. Then it would not trim up or down with foot pedal or remote. I saw this video and my red wire in trim module need to be resoldered. It's working perfect again!!! Thanks for the video. PS - it's difficult to get back together... trying to pack the wires in, keep the spring in, and align the brush contact plate. Just be patient, it took me several trys!

      Good luck! I think in my case it was a combination of inadequate strain relief on the wiring and hitting underwater objects :-/ that pulled the wire loose from the contact plate. Make sure all your connections from the battery to the motor are all clean and making good contact before taking the trim motor apart. Also if its still under warranty it might be best to have them take a look.

    Very helpful video! Just about to buy a used model of this TM that appears to be in very good condition- it’s a 24v 80lb 60” - it’s going to go on a Ranger glass boat, w/yami 150 ... they weight approximately 1900lbs - before people and gear - just wondering if you think the 80lb will be good to go? Also, primarily fish lakes and occasional river - Thanks!

      Sorry for the late response. I have the same model your looking at and when I had it on my fish-n-ski it would pull the boat about 3.5 MPH with no wind. I put it on my new aluminum V and it does about the same maybe a little more. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do!

    3:13 Yes it is signal plus voltage. If apply to 36v Riptide Ulterra it just separate to 2 sides, one is positive and another side with negative.
    Another related issue was the connecting point you pointed at 3:09. In the case of a 36v motor, you can be using a multimeter to test both side connections. Normal it should be not broken at the same time, so you use the multimeter to test the same side connection good or not, both sides of 2 connectors should get connections when testing.

    • @Lefishn
      @Lefishn 3 года назад

      I have a 36v and when I hit deploy I'd doesn't give and error but says deploying but doesn't make any noise or doesn't move so what should I test? Should I check if voltage is getting through those rings somehow to see if its the movable Trim Mudule or if it's the main control board or wires that's not sending the power to the trim motor. If you have email would be easier to show you in a video

    • @jerrychf
      @jerrychf 3 года назад +1

      @@Lefishn I would try to shake the whole thing when I clicking deploy.
      Normally if the trim module goes out it always about the connective problem as I mention upon. So shaking the motor when you clicking deploys may connect back a little and moving a little bit.
      If so I can guess it would be the connective problem inside the trim module.

      @@jerrychf how do I seperate the trim Module once top is off and the 4 screws? Seems like it is stuck together and don't wanna break anything prying

    • @jerrychf
      @jerrychf 3 года назад

      @@Lefishn After 4 screws (should be the torx screws), and you need to take off the small belt. Other than these should be no problem to pry out no damage. It sticks together with some glue or gasket for waterproof so prying out is ok.
      Oh one more thing, the little belt is from Power Grip GT, spec with 208-2gt-6. So just go for the belts specs with 208-2gt-6 and you could run well for the trim in case you break it or the teeth snaped

    Thanks for the excellent video. I have an Ulterra 80 (2016) and I added the FW ipilot service pack for the spot lock in 2019-love it! The remote deploys and stows the motor properly, but it won’t trim (move up or down in the water). Fortunately the prop is just below the surface, but I need to lower it some more. Do you think a loose wire like you found may be the problem? I wasn’t sure if deploying and stowing were issues for you. Any suggestions will be appreciated. Minn Kota customer service- not too helpful-so we have to teach each other. Again, thank you.

    Thank you so much for taking the time to make this video. This is exactly the issue im having on mine but with an other little twist, the small latch on the side that should release the shaft for manual stowing wont release the shaft. Any idea what would cause that ?

    • @christianpare78
      @christianpare78 Год назад +2

      Hi, mine is really hard to pull. I use a screwdriver to pry it off. You need to pull perpendicular to the shaft.

      I talked to there tech support and they more or less gave me the run around blaming a poor connection or bad battery’s. I think they would have fixed it but I would have been down over the peak fishing and swimming periods in June/July.
