My son and I are allergic to pork, specifically an enzyme pigs make but humans don't. I can tell you, Benedryl works better and faster than other antihistamines when I'm having a reaction. My son's reactions are more dramatic than mine. He's been hospitalized several times. Every time, the ER gave him intravenous Benedryl in conjunction with epinephrine to stabilize his condition. Having a major reaction is stressful and the sleepiness is helpful in relieving that stress.
The last benefit I can thing of is there is a topical version of Benedryl that's readily available. It's great for mild reactions that just cause a rash. I can smear some on the rash and go on with my day.
What does concern me about the anticholinergics is that I take Ropinerole for restless leg syndrome. I think it falls into that catagory. I will have to look into this. Thanks for the info.

I take Benadryl as just one part of my allergy treatment course.
I take it to specifically not only help me with an allergy flare but to also help me sleep during that allergy flare.
Meaning I only take it when my allergies r flared and I only take it at night because I know it will knock me out and I am relying on that to help both treat my allergies as well as help me get some sleep at night during that flare at the same time (due to my allergies preventing me from being able to get a restful night's sleep).
During the day however I use a different one, I use the non drowsy allergy meds (prescribed by my doctor) instead.
I also use creams for skin allergic reactions (I suffer from more than one type of allergy).
And I also am currently getting allergy shots to try and help actually cure me of the allergy (and so far it seems to be working).

I seem to be really sensitive to antihistamines. One Benadryl will make me a zombie for at least 12 hours. What's weird is Claritin is even worse for me. One Claritin will make me an unproductive human for a good 24 hours. So I just avoid antihistamines completely unless I'm having some kind of allergic reaction that's really causing me problems. Normal seasonal hay fever, I just live with. It's not debilitating, just uncomfortable. If I do feel like I need some help, I take half a Benadryl. That seems to reduce the allergy symptoms just fine, and doesn't zombify me.

Benadryl drowsiness only effects me for the 4-6 hrs that it works. However, any 24 hr allergy med will make me drowsy for the whole 24 hrs. So I use Benadryl and/or Sudafed (the one you get from the pharmacy). I only take them at night. Because even the Sudafed makes me drowsy. I have to rely on EmergenC, hot teas, cough drops and essential oils for the daytime.

Every time that I have gone to the doctor's office and I have made it clear I don't take Benadryl and I'm asked as to why I don't take Benadryl because I don't want to be reliant on Benadryl on having to take that to counteract anything to do with allergic reaction to anything and I'm allergic to it for some I don't know what my body doesn't act right if I take Benadryl it just really doesn't I'm glad something is said about that because that has been bothering me for the longest time. Most of the doctors and Physicians nurses practitioners they know all that in Iola Kansas the ones that I have seen that know my medical history there's just certain things that I refuse to do or take within reason because I know how my body reacts to it and what it doesn't react properly and that really gets in that really gets on my nerves when it said it's all in your head not when we're born a certain way with genetics and DNA and everything of what how were formed as well as deformities birth defects I know all too well of that. And I mean this not to be hurtful or harmful but sometimes I would like to be like to someone that doesn't want to understand what if I did everything to them of what my body does to me for them to understand I get tired of being made to feel or told like I have to tolerate it all the time all day long would they want to go through their life like that having to tolerate certain things to do with what my body is not wanting to do or the pain and things like that with long-term illness. Because someone's not going through that it's so easy for them to try to convince you for worse you into something to believe altering your mind train of thought into something different

I take 75 - 100mg of diphenhydramine for my bad insomnia because I'm already on sleep meds but the doctor won't up the dose to a place that is effective for me. Meanwhile, sleep deprivation causes acute effects right away. The rest is future me's problem. Doctors have treated me like I'm a drug seeker when I can't sleep every night and am in pain daily that limits my movement. So I don't care and I'm going to do what I need to do to get through it.

Even the non drowsy cold and flu meds and sinus meds make me sleepy. Can you please tell me why Doctor Mike

Those are a mix of multiple medicines. Look up the active ingredients. They probably just aren't mixed in the right amounts for you. There's usually some that cause drowsiness that are there to address the problem. The drug maker also adds mild simulants to counteract the sleepy effect and make it "non drowsy".
The overall effect depends on how strongly each active ingredient affects you and how fast your body breaks them down. It's different for each person.

I use a small dose of benadryl for early morning allergies to stop a runny nose from time to time, and also, when I start to come down with a respiratory illness or nasal congestion. I find that it reduces the inflammation, which greatly reduces the cough triggering irritation I suffer from, or the nasal drip that leaks down my throat when I sleep. So my symptoms tend to go away a lot faster than when left alone because im not constantly making it worse by blowing my nose every 30 seconds, or coughing all the time. Does things like claritan have the same anti inflammatory/nose drying effect im looking for?

I can't lie I don't like to fly so I definitely take them to knock me out on the plane😂😂 That's the only thing I know that'll knock me out for a flight other than like a muscle relaxer or some type of sleep aid so if I can't get access to either of those I know I could go grab a Benadryl to get me through that flight😂😂

@doctormike - can you do a video on using melatonin as a sleep aid? My husband works a weird schedule and has been taking zquil for years. I'm trying to get him to switch to melatonin, but he's reluctant.

7:20: I have massive problems with getting sleepy and actually falling asleep. Diphenhydramine works. For one night. After that it's like I never took it. Except for having side effects like twitchy muscles or a general weird feeling. Same with melatonin and most other drugs. Every person I met that took benzos for actual or recreative use fell asleep without any problems. Even without wanting to. From all the times I took them, only one time I fell asleep within 30 minutes. And that was at a hospital after being unable to sleep for about 100h for no apparent reason. So for me it's all useless crap anyway.

Diphenhydramine causes serious hypotension issues for me, but I have hypotension issues with some other drugs as well, so it must be something I'm prone to. 2nd generation antihistamines don't cause this issue at all.

Mike: And the answer is.....- drum roll - we don't know.
