Wilson Cruz still seems impossibly nice even when he's not playing Dr. Culber.
Immediate thumbs up for Wilson Cruz
Give that man an up
I thumbs up your thumbs up
Seriously! That man is freaking handsome as fuq 😂😂
That man is so gentle, almost as if I could tell him anything and he would listen. IDK, he just has a chill vibe 😅
It nice to have a video where even the intro gives you a grin.
End of Disco... haven't cried so hard since I watched the DS9 finale, when it originally aired here in Canada. 🤘😎🖖🇨🇦🍻
I just watch Season One. I had not even been aware of the show. It was very good, beating my expectations. I was so happy we got Kate Mulgrew back as Janeway.
You missed the whole drama then of the show being totally cancelled then not cancelled couple weeks later and the streaming rights.
Prodigy Season 2! I'm so excited! Prodigy is my favorite new Trek - I hope it gets a third season!
The current and future fate of Paramount+ was discussed today (June 3, 2024) on the NPR program 1A, during a broader discussion of streaming services vs. television and movies. StarTrek was not mentioned specifically but fans may find it interesting.
Thanks TrekCulture for all you do!
Yes, we did get Sovereign class ships in Lower Decks and Prodigy, and mentions of Kelvin timeline in Discovery, after the merger. I love trek being under one roof
Awesome intro with Wilson Cruz 🖖
Star Trek Prodigy, woot woot!! 🥳🎉🎉
Skydance & Paramount
Let's go!!
Bonnie Gordon wrote and performs the theme song for the D Con Chamber pod cast with Dominic Keating & Connor Trinneer. She's awesome.
I’m so happy to be a Star Trek fan
Same!
I'm also happy that you're a Star Trek fan!
@@JohnnyWednesday I am also happy that you’re happy that he is happy he is a Star Trek fan.
Me too. Some segments of the fandom can be quite nasty at times but I've met some wonderful people because of trek fandom
PRODIGY!!! YAY!!!
Thanks for all the good news! I was frustrated when they yanked Prodigy, right after we had just paid for an annual subscription to Paramount+ to have access to all the Trek shows. Now we can add Netflix for a while and I can finish Season 1, then start enjoying Season 2. And the Skydance merger definitely sounds like the best situation we could hope for in the fun and exciting world of multi-billion dollar mergers.
I still find the Canadian release of Prodigy in the grey. It isn’t streaming properly anywhere and is stuck within the bell paywall under a CTV Sci-fi cable subscription requirement in the CTV App. Netflix has no distribution deal for this in Canada as far as I’m aware.
If you get your internet through one of the selected companies you can access it. I am with cogeco and I can watch it.
I love Sean; he's such a calming, measured voice of reason in all of his reporting, ups and downs etc. 😊
Second comment now I’ve watched the entire video. I’m glad to hear Skydance are merging with Paramount I really disliked Sony’s idea of breaking the company up. I didn’t know Skydance were involved making the Kelvin movies but that means at least they have an interest in keeping Trek going.
Lastly I really enjoyed this format maybe it would be an idea to do straight news videos like this every so often.
Skydance is a much better fit for Paramount because of their longtime, successful production partnership (Star Trek and the later Mission: Impossible movies). If the Sony Private Capital deal had gone through, Paramount would be taken apart and all of its assets - including franchises that don’t fit Sony’s agenda - are sold off piece-by-piece until Paramount becomes a shadow of what it used to be… and I don’t think anyone wants to see Paramount go the way of Red Lobster.
@@MsSissiePooh Skydance also did Top Gun: Maverick. They wanted to keep everything together, so huge plus there.
@@MrMac1138 - I agree. Top Gun: Maverick was last summer’s biggest box office hit, so Skydance has a good track record, which may have been enough to seal the deal.
I have to use a VPN service in Canada to watch Prodigy on Netflix. It is not available on Netflix in Canada.
It is on CTV sci-fi in the CTV app. I have watched it on my tablet.
@@laurabailey1054 I don't have any cable network TV, which is needed for that app. I've only had streaming for over a decade now.
I suspect Netflix will break it up into 2 blocks of 10. That does seem to be their new preferred format for animation.
Yeah ... If I had to guess, I would say that we're getting 10 episodes of "Prodigy" on July 1st; and another 10 episodes on August 1st. Then Paramount+ starts its weekly drop of "Lower Decks" in September -- in close proximity to "Star Trek Day". This guess is based on the fact that we had been hearing all along that Netflix would coordinate "Prodigy" releases with Paramount.
Nope, they are releasing all at once
Lucifer did their 5th season as two 8 episode blocks. I see them doing similar for prodigy
Yes, +1 Wilson Cruz.
Also, I'm gonna need a link to that t-shirt.
Did your research shed any light on how Bad Robot would play into things? While Skydance is a producer on the Kelvin films, Bad Robot is the main producer.
One correction to "worldwide" aspect of that - this seems to exclude the countries, where Paramount co-runs SkyShowtime platform. Since it's technically separate from Paramount+, it seemingly licensed out the show including season 2 in advance, but there's no news about release in there (just like Knuckles show, which has been dubbed into several languages of the area but not premiered yet), We only got Discovery a few months prior to final season premiere, and last season of Lower Decks never premiered here (and the previous one vanished from Amazon!), so it's a bit of a mess here.
As for Legacy - with Matalas accepting the job of a showrunner with Marvel to run Vision series, it seems pretty unlikely at this point.
Also, Canada. You can't stream Prodigy without a cable subscription in Canada right now. Stupid Bell Media.
What really sucks about this (for me personally) is that Bell Media has not one, but two separate streaming services in Canada. Why? Because it's a poorly run, dumb company. I have access to their Crave streaming service through my roommate. But Prodigy isn't on Crave, it's on their CTV streaming service.
I'm annoyed. I guess piracy is the answer here? Either VPN or one of the other options? I shouldn't have to resort to that, given the large number of streaming services I subscribe to.
agreed about weekly vs dump of everything. I love the cadance of week to week and watching all the fandom enthuse about it after each viewing :) Also I would love to set up a star trek viewing party at some point in my life
Shout out to my girl Yasmin who has put up with me squatting in her other side of the border living room 3 times so I could watch Prodigy S2 in full and in English on France TV replay+ or whatever it's called. That's a true friend. ❤
I still don’t understand what’s the possible explanation for Lower Decks’ cancellation 😢😢😢
The 20th Century Fox / Disney merger was a completely different beast, compared to Paramount / Skydance deal. The reason there was so much scrutiny on the Fox/Disney deal, was Disney was already a large media conglomerate, and was narrowing the "competition" field, possibly creating a monopoly. That is why there was so much delay in the merger, and why it was scrutinized so heavily by Congress/Senate. Skydance is not near the scale the Disney is, so this deal actually should go through a lot faster, and easier, with less scrutiny. There will still be regulatory validation that needs to occur, but not near the level that Fox/Disney had to go through.
I don't know if it was editorial intent or happy accident, but I love the symmetry of Sean calling the Fox/Disney merger process "long, long, long" and their respective logos being on screen a full 11 seconds "longer" than he was talking about it 10:34-10:48🤣
I don't know if it was editorial intent or happy accident, but I love the symmetry of Sean calling the Fox/Disney merger process "long, long, long" and their respective logos being on screen a full several seconds "longer" than he was talking about it🤣
Whaaaaaat the doc just said hiiiii
Hooray for more Prodigy, just sucks its on Netflix.
Yeah, I cancelled NF. Not happy with them in so many ways
Skydance may have an invested interest in keeping Star Trek alive since there are substantial rumors of another Kelvin universe movie (and the Kelvin movies were profitable).
Wilson Cruz is my Platinum up of the day
What surprises me is that nobody in France ripped a copy and put it online. Surely it had other languages than French.
We are not that kind of Trekkies. There was a litteral meeting on Reddit where it was decided to keep Stumm. Some people are even waiting for Americans to see it so we can all discuss together. If you can't wait (like me) a VPN will allow you to visit France TV website. My french friend asked me to stop showing up at her Evian house specifically to watch star trek.😂😂😂 Tried with VPN since and it works fine.
I am so elated that we finally have a date for Season 2 ... and it's less than a month away! 😁
You're in for a treat with Prodigy season 2
indeed, too bad there was only french dubbing on franceTV... but what a season 2 ! (cocorico 😋)
@@swan_79 The French dubbing was not so bad, but yes, I'm looking forward to seeing it in English with the real voices
I will be watching - loved the first season.
Trek Long Island was a blast! So cool to say hello and kudos to the team for all the awesome Trekkie videos 🖖🤓
Really excited for Prodigy coming back! It's just such a shame that apparently there'll be no marketing for it. I mean, Netflix bought it, so things are different, but Prodigy has been so disrepected already. And now we find out that season 2 is coming out via Netflix's New & Hot section on the app, no trailer, no posters, nothing! And it's coming out on a Monday? It seems that Netflix might just drop all episodes just to be done with it like so much content is just dumped there every week.
Great news for Prodigy. I just hope they also release it on physical.
Me too. In Canada it was on CTV sci-fi.
Prodigy!!!! I will have to get a Netflix subscription. I like this news with Skydance...I just hope it is not trying to put a band-aid on a large open chest wound. Paramount has a lot of debt, and I'm not sure 6 billion is enough to help. I hope it is, but... Please try to do Prodigy Ups and Downs per individual episodes. I understand if you drop all 10 "at once".
THANKS for this, Sean (and Wilson Cruz)!!!!!
So I want as much Trek culture analysis so please one episode at a time. I don't always have time to watch episodes when they drop but once I finish an episode the first thing I do is watch the ups and downs.
Bonnie Gordon is awesome! I met her at the Star Trek convention in San Francisco this March. She was so awesome!
cool reference to Trek culture, that definitely gets an up
Good geek day today we get prodigy news and adam savage showing off TOS tricorder 😁
hopefully they might also consider taking ST-LowerDecks up to 7 or even 12 seasons....
Prodigy is one of the good shows, but probably I care a little bit less about it than ST.LD... in the end, it's more isolated from Kannon & The Universe...
Of the options, I think Skydance was probably the best bet. Just hope we don't see any more tax write-offs as a result.
There may be another reason why Paramount went with Skydance.
Paramount also owns CBS. As they have a news division, it may have thrown up regulatory hurdles that could invite an anti-trust lawsuit from the FCC if Sony's bid was the winning one (Sony being a Japanese company).
Skydance merger avoids all of that and likely won't invite as much scrutiny from either the FCC or FTC
Sony would have likely pre-agreed to split off the news division. It would either have been spun off and stay with the original American shareholders, or it would have been sold to an American company. This kind of thing frequently happens in large deals.
I think since Picard is done (maybe), they should do a follow up of the other 24/25th century shows,
What happened to DS9, did Odo or Sisko ever return (this will be more difficult without Rene, and Aaron).
Is Harry Kim still an Ensign, did the other crew members from Voyager move on to other ships, is the Doctor still around?
(I know there’s plenty of follow on stories in Beta cannon, but Paramount doesn’t count that.)
I thought that's what we all wanted - instead we've had years of TOS worship. You know - the silly one. Isn't Quark good enough?
Avery Brooks doesn't act anymore
@@Spock4771simple. Sisko is ‘with the prophets.’ No need to show up.
@@JohnnyWednesday I'm fine with some TOS worship as a dyed in the wool TNG and beyond era fan. I think in many ways it got things right off the bat that even TNG dropped the ball on. Obviously Bones and Spock's relationship probably needs a reexamination along with the trappings of mid 60's TV, like having less of a main character and his buddies focus and much more an ensemble cast. But TOS concepts like the limit of exploration not being starship speed, but logistics (ie any ship can zip around the edges of the galaxy or travel to the galactic core if it wanted to, but it or even a million ships like her will be on their star trek for millennia to actually chart all those planets and stars and space.) or that ships are WAY more durable than the flimsy bags of salt water inside them (ie the whole crew could be dead in some catastrophe, but the ship lightly damaged instead of screaming about an imminent warp core breech every other fight). Won't be fixed since they are retroactively applying later era lore to the past, but investigating the era with modern eyes isn't so bad. I mean if we aren't actually going to have shows set in the 2360-70 range and instead follow some geriatrics in the 25th century then it's an academic question anyways.
The Doctor is in Prodigy series 2. Given that he's a hologram, he should basically be immortal. Surprised they didn't have him show up in 31st century Discovery! :)
Only mildly disappointed that there wasn't an assimilation joke alongside the news of the merger
It's always worth sending a shout out to Bonnie Gordon, one of the most enthusiastic super geeks in existence. I've followed her since her RPG days on Geek & Sundry and met her a couple of times at cons (as well as seeing her perform with her group the Library Bards), and she's the actual best.
I am so happy Prodigy is getting a 2nd season, it is such a unique series
Any chance of lower decks being saved, after the Skydance news?
One can hope. It’s essentially the Start Trek version of Futurama and that show has been killed and resurrected multiple times.
@@ColinPMcEvoy I actually hope that doesn't happen. I was a huge fan of the first run of Futurama, and the revivals (movie, TV, TV) weren't as good. I still watched them, they were still ok, but they lacked the magic of the original.
I'm a huge Lower Decks fan. It's my favourite Star Trek, slightly edging out DS9. I don't want a watered down revival with slowly aging voices like Futurama. Now a sequel or 3? Sure. New characters, new stories, maybe even new times. Similar(-ish) format, different stories to tell. If it's set in the early 25th century you could even have crossovers with Admiral Tendi sending them on missions;). Bradward would have been an admiral, but he was overly bold and got himself sucked into a wormhole to another universe.
Prodigy 2 (no spoilers) is action packed. It never stops it's bang bang bang keeps going. Plan on single ep reviews and at time 2 ep review as there's a bunch of two parters.. that also being said there's bombshell drops a bit past half way. Plan for that when you do your reviews. Also everyone is going to really really really love it.
I hope they drop in about 4 or 5 ep clumps. To be honest that would be ideal.
Where'd you get that shirt though? :O
Keep Prodigy going
Still has to be approved before it will be official. I can’t see much of a complaint beyond having fewer, rather than. Ore, studios reduces competition, but the easy counter argument is one large company rather than two failed smaller ones is better for the industry overall
My eye stopped twitching over the Kalvin Universe once it was obvious that it wouldn't be the de facto ONLY universe. I actually enjoyed Into Darkness. I simply didn't like the writing in the other two. And it's still hard for me to reconcile the Spock who stops Kirk from letting Edith Keeler die, with the one who doesn't think they should prevent the untimely destruction of Vulcan. But as long as there's Prime Universe, I won't be twitching my eyes about Kalvin stuff, should they ever do more.
Where the heck can one get the t-shirt Sean is wearing here? That's a great design!
For those who haven't watched, Bonnie Gordon shared so many great insights on the 7th rule during Prodigy's initial run!
man i am looking forword to see season 2 i feelings is that they are going to release season 2 in all is for sure my favorite star trek show
I’m so glad it’s finally coming out!!!!
Am so glad we have a release date, my kids keep asking me daily when it's coming out
Ah, Ah! His alter ego came through when he said he was just a humble reporter at around 9 minute mark!
Why aren’t you doing a save lower decks campaign like you did Prodigy?
Honestly, if Netflix is going to hold fast to their “dump and only watch the numbers for a week” release schedule, then I’d also like it split, but it really feels like all services need to go back to weekly releases to keep people paying for their services longer. There are so many who only pay for a month here and there to then binge what they can around some releases and then cancel again, but a weekly release of multiple shows would allow the service to space out releases better and leave less room between new content. (And yes, I know some will wait until everything has released, but even Netflix has shown those who do that are a smaller percentage than those who start and stop and start again their service.)
"Worldwide". They were supposed to upload season 1 worldwide at Christmas. Well it's still not on Netflix here. So erm presses doubt button.
I would go to Star Trek convention if I knew that the cool people from Trek Culture were going to be there. 🙂
Maybe there will be crossovers between the main universe and the Kalvin universe if they both are under the same umbrella.
Oh Zod. Kurtzman is going to keep running Trek into the ground with this Skydance deal.
I honestly don't think he's the reason for most of the decisions people don't like. And I say that as someone who thinks he's a god-awful writer who shouldn't be allowed near a keyboard. ST:2009 and STID were both terrible. But he isn't a writer on these shows, he's just running the business end of things. And he seems to be good at that.
Here in the Netherlands we don't have Prodigy on Netflix. Guess it will be physical media again, if Netflix decides to release it that way.
@@syntrilliumc.e.p.9326 I haven't had cable television in 6 years now. So I will be waiting then.
If the merger with Skydance happens, does this mean all Star Trek titles will have the JJ Abrams' lens flare. Come to think about it...if Sony acquired Paramount, what would "Lower Decks-The Anime" look like?
I would really like to see Ethan’s Spock meet Zachary’s Spock in a SNW episode
I could see that being rather hilarious, actually.
Q-Spock sees E-Spock, they regard each other. Q-Spock sighs in frustration. "Here we go again."
Take a DOWN please Sean... not a sip was taken from the contents of that there mug on the table. 😂
If netflix drops all the episodes in one go, what's your watch plan gonna be?
I would do 5 a day, but I can not promise that. 😉
And also, thumbs up 👍 love Wilson Cruz. ❤
Body gordon is a goddess and in my opinion best singer in the world. Also I love your shirt .
Ugh, big block release would suck. It means we gotta binge it so they don't just cancel it again because their numbers don't show up as good enough.
My guess is option B for Prodigy season 2 on Netflix.
Netflix--as one of the myriad Quark industries--hasn't made Prodigy available at all in The Netherlands.
The French tv station released all 20 episodes at once; I don't see why Netflix wouldn't do the same...
I'm a very sad Trekker these days. This round of cancelations has hurt. Prodigy, Discover, and Lower Decks in such a short time. Boo!
Cancellation? Is season two the announced last?
It's great being PR.
What about the SkyShowtime release in the Netherlands? 'Cause we don't get a Netflix release..
Please tell me you know something? Please tell me this isn't another complete fugg-up for the Dutch audience?
To be honest I don’t think prodigy is going do any better than it aired on paramount ; when they released season one on Netflix the show never trended..
Looks like all 20 at once
Angel from Party Monster?
If quite place day one becomes successful it would stop that merger!
ive been waiting for this
Trek Long Island sounds like it could be a very weird thing to watch.
I really like that series, better than Discovery which needlessly confesses things.
One has to wonder, does this mean that Trek after the merger will focus on the kelvin timeline?
What department of Starfleet uses a pink uniform?
terry matalas already has a new job
Lots of news.
Netflix likes to drop their shows as bingable things. They still run with the binge it or don't watch it model XD
❤❤❤❤❤
I'm hoping it includes Canada
It does not sadly
What the heck is Sjydance? Never even heard of it.
Given Star Trek's insane level of continuity across media, it would be an absolute disaster if it were broken up for parts and sold to different companies. Financially, however, it would be the correct thing to do. So remember Trekkies, we dodged a bullet this day. But the gun is still loaded.
Can you maybe use a different metaphor other than a device used to kill? dodge a frisbee perhaps? the wrist is still taut?
@@JohnnyWednesday “dodged a bullet” is a common idiom and everyone understands it. Dodged a frisbee makes you sound like a prat.
Also getting hit by a frisbee isn’t likely to do any real harm whereas being hit by a bullet will so the bullet is a more effective conveyance of why the situation is undesirable
@@farplaine - I've seen people throw frisbees with quite some force, I think that's an appropriate level of theat - I'm not willing to die for bad writing.
Please let Pridigy season 2 have 20 episodes like season 1! I'm sick of all these shows with 10, or god forbid, less!
We already know season 2 of ‘Prodigy’ has 20 episodes, he talks out it in this video! It’s whether or not they will be releasing all 20 together, or in 2 blocks of 10.
Welp Tencent is part owner of Skydance .....
Oh heck 10 ups and downs, maybe 20 in one day. Hope you all have a good stock of energy drinks.
