This is gorgeous; I wonder why I don't hear more clarinetists play this work.

I have played this work, and I can tell you that while the first movement is fun and works well on the clarinet, the other two are much less graceful for the instrument, and the last movement is very difficult. That may be why it isn't done so often.

I heard Charles play live when I first came to NYC in the early 80s and have been a fan ever since. He has an supreme understanding of both the instrument and the musical possibilities here. It is sad, however that cheap solid state microphones are placed so close to the piano - It emphasizes the poor tuning and distracts from Eunjung Kang's fine performance. Bravo to the videographer also!

Anyone else wonder why they cut measures 84-86 in the 1st movement?

+Chuck Dillard It does seem odd, but perhaps maybe its an audio glitch, if you listen really closely around then you can hear a slight blip in the audio which might signify a skip in the track rather than a musical cut.

I didn't like it played on clarinet because the piano usually sounds muddy transposed down, but this is very good. I was going to play it with a friend of mine but she got sick and died before we could.

In this particular video, I believe he is playing his custom-made clarinet from Schwenk and Seggelke, made of boxwood. The one he is playing in this video has a Boehm system (which he requested to be specially-made), but I believe he also owns one with a Muehlfeld system (also made of boxwood).
