In this video, I go over on how i add bass lines on my sampled based production using the mpc live mk2 or the mpc on as both of those samplers work the same. in this mpc live tutorial we will break down some of the new tools in the mpc update 2.10 and match the key to the sample with our bass notes that I am using from the marco polo pad thai expantion pack. This will be useful for all of our boom bap hip hop beat making workflows.

14:26 The small drawback of using 16 levels is that you can’t see or change the different notes heights in the grid editor, which can be a pain if you want to fix your melody in the editor. That’s why I usually convert my bass sample to a keygroup program. It also allows, in the performance pad options, to select the same scale as the one that was detected for the sample. Quite useful when you don’t have a great music theory knowledge and are unsure which notes you should use to stay in key (only using your ears can be hard with some low bass tones). That said, great tutorial as always. Rehearsing the bass line on an upper octave is a really useful tip.
Hey brother, I highly appreciate you sharing this input as a notice a few others mentioning about the key groups which I’m not as familiar using yet but I’m definitely gonna look into that after reading some of your guises comments. I appreciate you taking the time and sharing this information.
This is game right here
Please do a vid on this
Great video. You also can use the MPC to determine the key of the sample, pitch it to the correct key, convert it to a new sample at the correct pitch, then load it up as a keygroup and use the MPC scale feature to play in key. I don't think the 16 levels are scale accurate.
Hey Sam, thank you so much for this information I have not tried this but is definitely something I want to look into after reading this.
Can you make a vid doing this please Sam? 🍻
You're videos are great man. Much appreciated!
I spent about 3 grand on all this stuff i have, and i feel like it would be absolutely worthless without videos like yours.
It's only been a about two months, but I'm starting to get it. Thanks!
You’re content is on point. Thanks for explaining the 16 level function and making it so simple. I was wondering how to get bass one shots pitched across the pads and you unlocked it. Keep doing what you’re doing!
Thank you my brother, thank you for taking the time and watching a video and sharing your input it really means a lot. I’m glad this was useful in your workflow
I’ve learned a lot from your videos lately man, they’re helpful and straight to the point. Please keep them coming!
Literally been trynna work with a good bass for my sample. This came clutch mann thank you!!!🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽
Hey Angelo, I highly appreciate you taking the time and watching the video. I’m glad it was helpful
This was insanely informative and helpful. I have been using the MPC platform just under 10 years now and have always struggled with running in custom basslines when my sample couldn't provide one. Appreciate you my dude.
Hey brother, I really appreciate you taking the time to share your feedback and I’m also glad this was helpful in your workflow. Blessings to you 🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽
You just built my confidence when adding bass to my beats. Thank you.
I play bass, guitar and keys. This video still was super helpful. I didn’t know the MPC can tell me the key the sample is in. That’s awesome! Thank you.
Hey brother, thank you so much for taking the time and watching the video I’m extremely glad it was helpful even though you’re a musician. Yes, The latest update on our MPCs give us the key
@@malobeats Yeah I’m excited about the MPC in general because this is my first one ever. So it’s all new and fresh to me.
@@bjamminsincebirth3494 Congrats on your MPC, I’m sure you’re going to love it even more as you get familiar with it down the road it’s such a powerful machine.
You’ve cornered the market with this subject this was really something that was needed in tutorial form you did a great job
Tons of vids showing you how to use a drum machine
@@dbanga5 This is what happens when you don’t mind your business I’m actually talking about bass tutorials OK
Hey brother, you have no idea how humbled I am after reading your message I appreciate you taking the time to share this. It’s definitely been a tough topic to discuss since it could be a bit tricky at times but this method has been extremely useful on my workflow when it comes down to sample bass beat production. Blessings to you brother
@@malobeats You’ve helped me tremendously. It’s an honor learning from you so easy to follow. I was wondering can you make a bass video using the key groups as well? but certainly this method is suffice✌🏾👑
One of the best videos on this topic I think I’ve ever watched. Thanks Malo.
Thank you burrito, it’s really means a lot brother you have no idea. I appreciate you taking the time
You do a great job explaining in your videos, keep ‘‘em coming. Thanks 👍
hey Cutta j, thank you so much for these words do you have no idea how much this means
@@malobeats PS. My girl loved your video of your wife making the beat 😂
Thanks bruh
Watched a few of ur vids in the new year. Keep up the good info.
Hey brother, I highly appreciate you taking the time to watch a video or two it really means a lot and I’m glad they were helpful. 🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽
Thank you for this info I have maschine and one of my biggest challenges came with finding the right bass for my samples but what I'd usually do is sweep by adding a high pass filter shaving away at a portion of the samples bass, so that the newly played bass that I'm adding onto the sample doesn't mask the original bass. I've found noise gating to be helpful for trimming and pulling away some of the low frequency to find the perfect balance of my added bass and the samples frequencies. so that my added bass can shine through where it's needed, complimenting the sample. This video is great 👍
Hey brother, thank you so much for sharing this valuable information. I love what you wrote as it’s extremely important when adding the baseline, I didn’t get a chance to touch up on this section so I am extremely glad you shared this with us. 🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽
Dope video bredren👍🏾
Always helpful information
Thanks for sharing
Peace and Blessings
Thank you so much for taking the time and sharing the Zinput. I’m glad this was informative. Blessings to you brother
mate, finally just really understood this. I was fucking uo because I pitch each pad separately to the whole sample is different keys. can still use this method on each pad and then keep the bassline in key. So good. Thanks man.
Thanks brother, you've got the best MPC vids 👌
Do you have no idea how much this means to me, thank you so much for your time and these kind words. Blessings to you
This was insanely helpful
This helps so much man thank you! I always get to the bass part of my beats and just get stuck. ✌️
Hey brother, thank you so much for taking the time in watching a video and also sharing your feedback I’m glad this was helpful in your journey.
Great video! Been looking for a video on this for a wile….was using low pass on duplicate before but that bass line sounded fire!
Haley, thank you brother I appreciate you taking the time to watch the video and sharing some of your workflow. This method right here has been my favorite as of yet but every now and then I’ll switch it up a bit and try different ways but I seem to come back to this method most of the time.
Great tutorial - waiting for more like this
Thank you for the time and input Brother 🙏🏽🙏🏽
Once again, awesome video! Im new to mpc i got the live 2 and so far im hooked. Just feels right lol. Im 22 years in music production so i know pretty much everything i need to know except the mpc! Your videos help a lot bro thank you! I was able to make my first beat within a few hours! So much more to learn on this thing it gets me all excited 😝
Hey man, this really means a lot and I’m glad you took the time to share this with me. Hopefully these videos continue to view good use for your journey. Much love and blessings to you.
@@malobeats It will surely continue to help because Im wanting to use MPC specifically for sampling, boom bap and lofi hip-hop/chill hop. I also play a little guitar and bass plus I have a couple different cajons and a zoom H8 for field rercoring ambiance and things like that. So Im stoked to be able to go anywhere I want and have your channel to resort to when I need specific tips! Keep it up man tons of people appreciate it!
Glad i found your channel…dope information
You are the best! Thanks!
Awesome tutorial, and I absolutely LOVE your honesty. I'm DAW Less with a Maschine Plus and SP-404MK2, and I don't know keys or own a keyboard, but I do my bass the same way! Great video bro!🙏🏾✊🏾💚
My brother, much respect to you and it really means a lot coming from you as you’re a talented artist yourself. I appreciate you taking the time and watching the video brother. 🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽

And yeah, the Pad Thai basslines are always amazing. I've made full program out of just pad Thai basslines, just to chop!
Absolutely, Marco polos bass lines are always fire it never disappoints.
Excellent video 📹 bro I learned something new and I'll subscribe to your channel thanks.
I highly appreciate you taking the time to watch the video and sharing your feedback there’s really means a lot. Thank you for the support
Sweet. Better than warping stuff for bass indeed.
Clutch 🔥👍
I love Marco Polo’s kits. Got all 7 so far.
Oh man I just got the pad Thai volume two and it’s amazing I am about to upload a video with a beat I just made using it.
I feel like whenever I’m struggling with something on the MPC I come on RUclips an you’ve recently made a video about it hahah great videos 👍🏻

Great Job
Hey Bolo, thank you for taking the time 🙏🏽 really means a lot coming from you brotha. Blessings
Video production quality on point
Hey Malcolm, you have no idea how much this means thank you so much for sharing this feedback. These videos take so much to produce I truly enjoy doing it from the bottom of my heart and I’m glad you noticed those small details.
MALO BEATS Yes sir. All thing being equal... there's so many channels with good production content but I always check you out because you go the extra step to put sauce on your videos. Just keep going my guy.
You already have great bass in the machine. Sine is the program. No need for outsourcing your bass.
What's sine?
I'ma get a Moog eventually regardless but I thought I absolutely couldn't make a beat without it
@@KnowledgeOfSelf144 check your stock sounds on your MPC. Those are deep bass tones when you use the lower octaves. Same tones J Dilla and Nottz use.
Intro beat kraaaaaaaxy
I’m close to pulling the trigger on a Live II.
It seems like the best fit for me because the screen is close, the pads are big, and it’s truly portable.
The Force just makes me wince and the MPCX is just way too monstrous.
Ahah, this video is for me :D The basslines are my lowest point, even though I'm a bit better now. Sometimes is just the "instrument" it self, like the plugins vs some other keygroups from other expansions.
Trust me I feel you, there’s different ways of doing it but this method has been the most efficient for my workflow as of yet.
very helpful vid
Thank you I highly appreciate you taking the time and watching the video. Blessings
this is great thank you! as far as i'm aware, maschine doesn't tell you the key of the sample, i drag it in serato sample to find it out or scaler 2
I would add to run the sample through an app that might give you another idea of the key. So one app on iPhone is Chord AI or you can use Scaler 2 if you have it. I’m not sure how accurate the MPC is but I’m definitely gonna use that feature on samples I don’t know. Ty again.
Hey brother, thank you so much for sharing this year as I noticed that the MPC does a great job but it’s not always accurate so I’m definitely going to check this app out when I feel that I’m not getting the right key on my MPC. Thank you
My method is, use a free pitch detection app on my phone, hum along with the track in my head until you find the key, read the pitch the app detects from my voice, then go from there ;)
Or just experiment with the semitones andplay it by ear - muddle my way to some kind of success :)
I just discovered your channel. You got a lot of dope in-depth tutorials and dope beats. Definitely going to go through your videos today. Peace peace ✌🏼
Man I'm just good enough at playing keys or pads to make a bass line, but I'm one of those people that needed this. I could never match the bass to the sample! Mpc's are amazing instruments
Hey Alexander, I’m so glad you took the time to share this in the comments since a lot of us that are not musicians might feel a big struggle but I’m sure it could be challenging for a lot of us that understand music or not. This method has worked for me most of the time and thought it could be useful to share it with you guys.
ur the goat bro
🙏🏽🙏🏽
Someone may have said this already but u could filter the bassline in the sample out. The Kill EQ works really good to do that.
Hey brother, yes that is one of the options that I go through but it’s not my favorite method as it can get a bit muddy when I do that so like just filtering out the low end and adding a bass line on top, but this is a really good method when it works. Thank you for this input 🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽
I use that feature a
Lot
Bro its such a NICE bass guitar riff on the original sample please dont let the synth bass drown this out. Let your sampled bass augment it but please UP that original distorted bass riff. Use a program like RipX to extract / splice the original bassline from your sample arrangement, send that to a completely new track on its own and add drive. Then put some deep synth underneath it. Now you have a track for hi bass and one for low bass. Excellent sample choice and arrangement👍🏽🏆🏆🏆

Can I do a video on the MPC One and the MPC live 2. Like which one is better to used and to travel with. If u have a travel studio like a laptop. Would the MPC Ons is good to travel our the MPC live two ?
Great looking video. What camera and lens do you use?
Thank you brother appreciate this feedback it really means a lot, I use the canon C 200 with a 24 to 70 and I also have a Canon EOS R for some secondary shots as you see in this video.
The EOS are I have 100 mm lens attached to it which gives it a very nice compression as I’m showing detail shots of the machines
Hey Malo! What you jusr did on the MPC live! Could that be done on the MPC live 1? I just thought I'd ask? I just bought an MPC live and I struggle with this feature!
Thank you for this
I have an MPC X and just starting to get the hang of it. But I can’t seem to get good bass. I’ve chosen kicks that sound like they have good bass. But they don’t kick very hard. Is it because aside from the kick, you need to have bass like this behind it?
👍👍👍
When trying to get the baseline out of the sample do you filter then layer the filtered version on top of itself multiple times to try and bring it out more??
If you’re doing it that way compress it. Parallel is the best that way. Also put, it in mono so it comes right down the middle. Yuhhhh Diiiiiii!!!G?!?
Word👍👍👍
ami does not give me the note in which the sample is I do not know what I am doing wrong but I do not get the option to see the key of the sample could you help me with that
How can i change octave on my bar snap screen
I dont class the MPC's with the full coloure screan and its software (which is pretty much identical to Akai's own DAW software for Windows computers on it) as Dawless hardware. I hear alot of MPC users saying that it's the best way to go Dawless. If I have a laptop with a Midi controller with drum pads using a DAW then how is that different from having a MPC 1 or X?
who cares
@@kingcryptdistro I do.
Keyyggggrrroouup
It seems as if you can sample it and just use 16 key mode to find the tone
key detect it's very cool
It’s been such an amazing update ever since we got this feature
@@malobeatsyou want organize à beat battle with sample imposed with the community?
You could just use pad perform mode and play the bass in the key of G minor.
Do you know if putting your single bass note into or perform mode is better than the way he did it, and if so why?
I was gonna ask when to do it this way and when to do it via pad perform (I’m assuming notes mode?)
@@Joebabylon yes because it allows you to play in the correct key throughout the entire scale.
@@Joebabylon unless you know how to lay the scale on the pads it’s best to just do pad perform, it’s less work especially if you don’t know theory
Oh so you’re saying throwing the bass note into 16 notes (once it’s tuned) like my man did is still not in scale as it would be on pad perform?
I can’t find this beat on your bandcamp😭
You may. have done it but reducing the viewing angle would help- - difficult to see the screen
Or a third option would be low end theory
As an aside, I was half decent with guitar, picked up the MPC, and started just playing around with a keyboard, and shit always sounded out of tune... turns out I've thought keyboard notes were arranged differently this entire time............
Hey Dean, thank you for sharing this input I’m glad I was able to read this as it is interesting to understand some different workflows
What is the name of this beat??
can you gift me that beat please, this is one of the greatest beats i have heard for real.
Auto explain !
🙏🏽🙏🏽
Seems complicated to me.. easier for me to just go to baseline, pick sub and play the baseline on a midi keyboard… only speaking for myself
You ARE a sample based musician. Don’t sell yourself short bruh.
I apreciate you brother 🙏🏽
