You might consider placing each knit sweater into an archival photo box. You can label each box with a sticker and place them on the closet shelf as you do now. They are approximately three inches tall and come in various lengths and widths. Archival Methods is where I purchase mine online. The boxes are especially useful for woolen sweaters to keep moths away.
