  • UPDATE: Bioware has released a trailer for their DLC, The Descent, coming out Aug 11!
    Bioware has been giving hints toward DLC about dwarves and the deep roads, so this video takes a look into the many mysteries surrounding them, their connection to lyrium, and the biggest question: who or what are the titans? Could they be related to the Forgotten Ones?
    Thanks to my friends Wee and Cipher for help and inspiration!

    My theory: Titans were one of the wonders that Solas describes as being torn apart when he created the Veil. Prior to the Veil's creation dwarves could perform magic using Lyrium and power granted to them by Titans. When Solas created the Veil, their tie to the Fade was sundered and dwarves could no longer perform magic but still have a connection to Lyrium.

    So happy that you brought up Malvernis. I doubt I would have found that on my own. I really want to know more about the Titans.
    I want to share something I found about the dwarves in my travels. I believe this happens after closing the big rift in the caves in Crestwood. You walk into an underground stream just before heading back to the surface and there are nugs there. If Cole is with you, he says something really interesting.
    "Dwarves used to trap them, but they don't remember the dwarves. Even dwarves don't remember the dwarves."
    This seems significant to me because of the Dwarves emphasis on tradition and the Shaperate. Also the Primeval Thaig being "So old it barely looked Dwarven."

      The Kingdom Oooh interesting! Very interesting! I usually play as a DW rogue, so I don't take Cole around much (even though I love him!).
      That Primeval Thaig is really interesting to me as well. I hope we learn more about it. It has those "Claws of Dumat" alllllll over it!

    6:18 Wow, I never noticed, but that makes sense now - Templars sound the way they do because of the lyrium. The lyrium is the blood of the stone, and the dwarfs are the children of the stone. Stands to reason Cole could hear the similarity, I guess.
    7:03 Dagna was working with lyrium and must have sensed her connection to the Stone for a moment, and to the titans. And through that she was connected to all her people (thinking all the thoughts, or the thought).
    13:10 That sounds... harsh. The pillars of the earth would be the titans, and their workers would be the dwarfs? Or those things from the DLC. Witless, soulless.
    Reminds me of a justification for Solas; they are not people after all. -.-
    13:53 You show Abelas here and don't remember that he said that Tevinter wasn't really their big enemy who destroyed them?
    Great video, thank you!

    Really interesting theory, I think you're definitely on to something.
    However, just one thing I'd like to contribute. The codex entree in the Western Approach, the one about a "giant golem" is just one long reference to Transformers: "more than met the eye... transformed... optimal primal (Optimus Prime)... the stars scream (Starscream)" Clearly a reference to the movies.
    The rest of the video is great, and I agree with the main point of it, but I thought I should point this out :) Keep up the great work!

    I was waiting for a video like this and was not disappointed! I got so excited when I saw you had made something about the dwarves. I cannot wait for the DLC to come and answer our questions.... or... who am I kidding, it will probably just bring a thousand more questions without really answering anything.
    So, I wanted to come back on the song bit. There is one piece of banter from Cole talking to Solas (after the break up), in which he speaks of "an old pain from before, when everything sang the same." Which I thought was also interesting, even though I am not entirely sure what it means.
    In Kieran (OGB)'s dialogues when talking to a mage inquisitor, we also learn two things: the lyrium gives him terrible nightmares, and that "it would be worse if you could not touch magic at all. Like being blind." (Kieran, stop talking behind the dwarves' backs, come on that's rude.)
    There is also something which does not seem to be connected too much, except for the fact that it just popped into my head when I heard Hawke talk about Grey Warden Bethany in my current DAI playthrough. He said that he is keeping her away from Orlais because of the fake Calling. In another playthrough, I remember that the Warden, gone on adventures far from Ferelden and Orlais, has not heard the Calling either and learns about it through the letter we send her. So that made me believe that only the Wardens in Orlais were victims of that fake Calling. This could be because of Corypheus's location, but like I said, as soon as Hawke mentioned that, the phrase "the Stone lives beneath Orlais" popped into my head.
    This is a sentence that is both associated to the Nexus Golem and to Tug, Leliana's friend from Leliana's song (who is casteless but maybe implied to be from Kal Sharok in WoT2?). And so, it got me to wonder if basically Corypheus could manipulate whatever the "stone" is to create a "Calling." If that's even connected at all.
    Then there's also the other similar sentences associated to Tug and the Nexus Golem, This gets really obscure, really guess-y... "Mathas gar na fornent pa tot isatunoll" and "Mathas gar na fornen pa salroka atrast". The second one, Leliana translates as "I am sorry for the death of my friends but that means we will find our way home." Which gives us the beginning of a translation for the first one? "I am sorry for the death..." I've read a theory that isatunoll could be associated with lyrium (isana) but... eh, I don't know what to think there.
    I had never thought of the titans at all (to be fair, I did not even know they were in the picture), but your theory is really intriguing. I have the feeling that Caridin says somewhere that he was trying to recreate beings of legend, something like that, but I may just be inventing this... But I don't know, it makes me sad too. I like the dwarves as individuals. But being part of a bigger whole could explain their strict caste system, in a way (like a fingernail does not suddenly become grey matter, if that makes sense... of course I don't doubt this is more complicated)
    Now, I don't know if this has something to do with the titans but I think we are missing a race here. Or several. In WoT2, in the passage about how Sandal was found, there is a description of the mosaic in front of which he was: "Paragons, elves, dwarves, dragons, and creatures Bodhan could not name." There are a few things Bodhan could not name. I don't think it's humans, because even though humans may be rare in Orzammar, I believe if he can name elves, he can name humans. They could be Qunari because they are less likely to have been to Orzammar (this is a time before Bodhan went to the surface), they could be creatures from the fade that he's never seen for obvious reasons, or they could be something else.
    But now, in the Masked Empire, we have a similar situation when they arrive in the central chamber of the eluvians: there are carvings of elves in armor on the columns, and on the ceiling: “Michel saw demons, dragons, and things for which he had no name.” Are these connected? Are they the same creatures?
    And then... pfiuuu, then there's this idea I have that I can't explain well that it all comes down to spirits and dragons (the two most worshiped visible entities (as opposed to gods that no-one can see)). There's the way ancient elves look so different from modern ones (when did they start growing hair?), Elgar'nan's name, obviously, and Flemeth who "maybe IS a dragon looking like a woman" (as said by Morrigan in DA:O, and Flemeth herself in DA2), and Kieran's dialogues with other origins. Qunari: "I've noticed your blood, it doesn't belong to your people" (oh but wait, didn't Iron Bull say that there are rumors Qunari look the way they do because they bred with dragons?). Elves "I just don't know why your people want to look like that." and there's so much more... but this has nothing to do with dwarves anymore, so I'd better stop here.

    • @girltriesgames
      @girltriesgames  9 лет назад +1

      +Jade Hairston Wow! Thanks for the thoughtful response. I definitely also keep thinking about "The Stone lives beneath Orlais" and what that means. I think it's interesting that Orlais is the country between Kal Sharok and Orzammar, and the western thaigs (Orlais is in the west) were the first thaigs to fall to the darkspawn in the first blight.
      I think this dragonage.wikia.com/wiki/Codex_entry:_Caridin%27s_Journal might be what you're thinking of in regards to Caridin recreating beings from legend? I'm not sure what to think, if he means a literal vision, or if he just means inspiration. But if he means a literal vision, that would have really interesting implications, and what I was kind of hinting at - that maybe the golems were inspired by the titans somehow??
      And I never noticed the fact that there may be creatures that we have never seen - that makes me think of the Kossith that IB talks about, saying that he doesn't think they look much like them. I wonder if there are more??
      HMM!! SO much to think about! I loooove these discussions! :D

    So is it possible that Fen Harel trapped elven "gods" in the fade and while creating the veil cut titans of their dreams and possibilities to control dwarfs? What if titans ran because they had no power anymore and they waited. But because of the Breach they got dreams back and soon will come back?
    If so, in the next game we probably will have Qun war, Elven uprising and awakening of Titans.
    P.s. Another thought is, what if elves are the the starting point of the blight and red lirium, it is possible they corrupted so much normal lirium that Titans had no more power over lirium?

    • @portalkey5283

      I can't wait for you to play the Descent and Trespasser DLCs.
      Also there's a theory that ancient elves (probably even Mythal herself) used red lyrium in their wars (against each other or maybe against the Titan/s).

    • @stabocat6029
      @stabocat6029 7 лет назад +1

      portalkey Oh, I wish I could.. But so far I watched every video on DA:I DLC's and read both books with the lore. And I think if elves used red lyrium it wasn't Mythal, but by Andruil. Also in the Inquisition you can see the paintings of elven hunters or warriors with red lines (lyrium?) in the Hinterlands. And that also made me think of Andruil.
      First I was obsessed with the theories, but then there was no one I could talk to about this kind of things, so I just went into my slumber ( joke intended 😅). Now just waiting for the game if there will be any.

    Just saw this video when it was linked over on the /r/dragonage subreddit. Really cool stuff.
    One thing I wanted to comment on--I don't know if I'd say that dwarves back then were 100% a hive mind, because of Solas' banter with Varric. Solas values free will and individuality above all else--listen to his banter with Iron Bull, he's pretty much openly hostile to him across the board unless Bull becomes Tal-Vashoth. I would think that if the connection to the stone made them "mindless drones," as the ancient elven writing puts it (and, of course, this could be the arrogance of the ancient elves, at the height of that culture's corruption, and part of why Solas locked away the Gods, but assuming it's purely the case) then he would think the way the dwarves are now would be an improvement.
    The popular theory I've always heard is that the dwarves helped Solas seal away the Elven Gods, and they had to sacrifice their connection to the Fade as a consequence.

  • @prygler
    @prygler 8 лет назад +5

    Titans are alive because of lyrium (lyrium is the blood of the titans), which is a magical fluid. So titans are made by magic. Dwarves are born from the titans somehow, which is why they have a special connection to lyrium. This is also why lyrium is alive, as they put it. Lyrium is magical cells, like blood consists of blood cells. Lyrium is connected to a song, as they say. This is why dwarves can hear the song, when they get in intense contact with lyrium. Red lyrium also takes control with its song. Where do the songs come from? Are the songs the words and demands of the gods?
    The war or conflict between blue and red lyrium reminds me of the dark side vs. the light side of the force in Star Wars. The red lyrium is the dark and corrupted magical side of the force. The blue lyrium is the light and good magical side of the force. Dark spawns are controlled by the "evil" song (the red lyrium or the dark side if you will). I think it will only be a question of time before lyrium and songs will be connected to gods, and the red vs. blue lyrium will be connected to a divine conflict/war between gods.
    You can also see this theme all the way in DAI. For example, Corypheus' dragon is a 'red lyrium dragon', and Corypheus is talking about becomming a god and conquering the divine city through the fade, which is why he needs the orb, because the orb makes it possible to travel in the fade in physical form instead of only in spiritual form. There is also a strong theory, which says that the fade must be "man made" (probably by the ancient elves, which means Solas probably had something to do with it), because of everything we now know about it. Maybe the fade was made to protect the divine city. Furthermore, the lore talks about Fen'Harel (Solas) tricked the gods and trapped them somehow. Solas is always talking about the fade and is spending a lot of his time in the fade talking to spirits and doing research. He also guides the inquisitor to activate old elven artifacts, which can "strengthen the veil" (e.g. strengthen the divide between the fade / spiritual world and the physical world). Solas also talks very nostalgic about how great the world would be if spirits could run around in "our" world. It seems Solas is sad about the divide between the fade/spiritual and the physical reality, although he wants to strengthen this divide (e.g. strengthen the veil). The fade or the veil seems like a necessary "evil" against a greater catastrophe. Therefore, it seems obvious that the fade is protecting something from those, who wants power and godhood. Solas also appear very empathic and depressed/sad at the same time, which makes him seem like a guardian or protector doing the necessary "evil" to protect the "greater good". It also seems obvious, that Solas is desperate to get into the fade in physical form, because he has an important mission in there, which is why he gave the orb to Corypheus, because he was too weak to use it himself after his slumber, as Solas said. However, after giving the orb to Corypheus, he realized his mistake and came to help the inquisitor to stop him. After he corrected this mistake, he left without a word, whereafter he met with his old friend Flemeth (Mythal).As Solas also said himself, Mythal and Fen'Harel are not gods, but "only" very old powerful mages. Obviously powerful enough to play an essential role in a divine conflict, and old enough to know about the role of lyrium, the forgotten history of dwarves and ancient cultures/civilizations.

      prygler im adding certain SPOILER thoughts now. Some believe some of the evanuris created red lyrium to weaken the titans, causing the titans to possibly retaliate. Imageing the earthquakes!
      They managed to defeat a titan, at a high cost(probably), which the elfs made into the orb Fen'herel uses. Fen'herel realising that furthur fights against them would likely be the end for all.
      He convinces the evanuris to be sealed in the fade while he deals with it all. Sadly i don't quite remember how he got the titans to also sleep but both sides were sealed off. While they were sealed Fen'herel crested the veil, separating the world from the fade.
      He then went into uthenra.
      Reply back if you want a little more info, if it's still relevant ☺

    I suspect dwarves were made/born from lyrium, maybe like natural born templars (or like Leliana as a lyrium ghost). The templars use lyrium to inhibit and resist magic, dwarves have a natural resistance to magic.
    Cole claims that dwarves are quiet in a similar way to templars; templars reach for that "other thing" (what I'm assuming is the root of said "quiet") to cancel magic. Something that is not the fade (which the dwarves are disconnected from themselves). It could be that templars are reaching for the very same "place" where dwarves get their stone sense and magic resistance.
    They also say they return to the stone, but if lyrium is the lifeblood of the planet (thus, the lifeblood of the stone) I find it more likely they would return to lyrium. After all, red lyrium is grown from living things, which may indicate an adaptation of the way untainted lyrium grows.
    It also makes me wonder if the dwarves are some sort of tranquil. Maybe they were once mages (before the veil) and the Titans or the veil caused them to become cut off from magic/the fade. Beings made from lyrium would have to be strong in magic, but if they were cut off from magic, that lyrium responsible for their magical prowess would effect them differently, the way it does templars (who lack magic, which causes them to gain a resistance instead).

    This is your first video I've ever watched and I'm not disappointed I love your theory it's very well thought out great video :) after watching your video and compiling my own theories with what we discover in The Descent it's possible that the Titans and the Elven Gods are going to play a huge part in future DA instalments.
    And nice job with noting the Golem in DA2 his words contently ran through my mind when playing The Descent dlc plus your Solas banter has really got me compiling tons of information and making loads of different theories.
    Also I think the song you mentioned at 4:15 is the song of the Archdemons calls to the darkspawn and the dance is the Blights as so long as Archdemon's exist and sings the song the Darkspawn are drawn to, mankind must dance to the tune of the Blights with dancing being fighting the Blights and compiling that with the Chant of Light verse at 1:46 and Flemeths words ''A reckoning that will shake the very heavens'' could be that once the music of the Archdemons stops playing the Titans, Maker and Elven God deity's will return to the realm of mankind. With the Titans waking up from their slumber, The Elven gods being released from their prison and the Maker coming forth.

    Regarding the Profanes: what if they were not souls but actually living dwarfs who where locked away? Like other taigs, the ancient red lyrium taig could have been abandoned, the dwarfs who lived there were left behind, traped. They were starving (their children crying from hunger) so they started eating lyrium. Since lyrium is a metal, but its also alive, like a plant, or something. Ancient elves in uthenera were fed, but some of them stared living from the fade itself, so they no longer needed nourishment. Maybe the lyrium is just a stone/dwarfen version of the fade, and like elves in uthenera they can "live" (if you can it living, becoming a profane) from eating it?

    +Asha Bellanar I can't reply directly to you for some reason (I think google+ settings), but I really really really like that theory. Really good insights in this video - awesome job! The only thing I can think of that you omitted but may be relevant is the floating stones in the fade. They're briefly mentioned in "The Laws of Nature in the Fade" codex, when the author notes it's odd that the laws of gravity don't apply to them, and that this may be because dwarves don't dream, a result of the "severed connection".
    I wonder if these could be either a remnant or memory of the titans? Or even shattered parts of them from when they were destroyed? I've always found it odd that no matter where you do in the fade, there's huge floating rocks. They seem to be the only constant apart from the Black City. This also makes me wonder how the nature of the fade or spirits could change if the dwarven race was restored to how it used to be.

    Excellent work. There is so much ere I never even thought about connecting. All very compelling.
    I think you found the reapers... I mean Titans. Now what would be really fucking cool, since the singing already sounds like indoctrination, and these giants already sound like reapers, is if they managed to put mass effect and dragon age in the same universe and make 2 overlapping stories.
    Perhaps the reason you can bind a dwarfs soul to an inanimate golem is because they come from the stone to begin with. Maybe they were created as a result of he battle between elgarnan and "the sun". Maybe this bound the *will* of that god to the very stone of thedas. It's blood, the blood of the earth.The source of magic.

      +Principe Negrô lol did you know that there are mounted Krogan heads in the Orlesian Chateau?? ;)
      That's also a very interesting theory about the sun. I have been wanting to know so much more about Elgar'nan and his story....

    • @theblackprinceofnyc
      @theblackprinceofnyc 9 лет назад

      No, I missed that but that just adds more conspiracy to my theory. =D
      I thought it was interesting when you noticed what could have been a dragon in your review of the new mass effect trailer. girltriesgames
      Given the new trend of universe building, perhaps this is where mass effect and dragon age are going.
      There is probably some tie between this battle, the abyssal rift and the fact that lyrium is the only thing that exists in the physical world and the fade at the same time. Yet, in the fade it has no negative effects. Even for non magi.
      Maybe the fade prevents them from directly controlling life. Maybe the blight is like a hack that makes it possible to do it again.

    Solas is legit the guy who steals your car. Sees you taking a bus. Parks you car and walks up to you. Talks to you about how good it was back in the days when you had a car. And how awesome it would be if you had a car again and didn't have to take the bus.
    That's what he's literally doing to Varrick.
    Just tell him it's parked around the corner and hand him his keys back, you maniac. lol

    I was trying to think of things to mention throughout your video, but apparently didn't need to. Of all the theories I have read/watched about the lyrium/titans etc. yours is almost spot on with mine.
    That being the case, there is one thing that I can't really figure out, so I was wondering what your thoughts might be on it..
    In The Silent Grove, Yavana says, "The blood of dragons is the blood of the world."
    This line always sticks in my head for some reason. I can't figure out a connection with the titans & dwarves, or even lyrium. The best I can come up with is that both of these "blood of world" entities (or whatever they are) are consumed, & grant magical abilities.
    Perhaps there is more of connection with the elves, since Mythal & Elgar'nan seem to have both been able to shapeshift into a dragon on their own accord..& in origins Morrigan says that you have to know the soul of the creature in order to take their form. The other elven gods were given power to do so (presumably).. the orbs maybe?
    well, since I have I gone completely off track (I hate when that happens)
    I'll stop there.
    Just wanted to know your take on the "The blood of dragons is the blood of the world." bit, or anything else you have to add.
    :)

    • @connieleeann
      @connieleeann 9 лет назад

      connieleeann gah,
      I forgot this.. something else Yavana says to Alistair,
      "Your heart beats with the old blood, as well. Where do you think it comes from? It sings of a time when dragons ruled the skies. A time before the Veil, before the mysteries were forgotten. Can you hear it?"
      So, a war between titans & dragons? Perhaps this is why the veil was "created" .
      I'll stop now. Off topic. Kind of.

    • @girltriesgames
      @girltriesgames  9 лет назад

      +connieleeann OOooh, very interesting. I keep forgetting about Yavana. I wonder if their blood has anything to do with lyrium? Or, maybe we are just reading into some kind of Thedosian idiom too literally :( lol
      You really got me thinking about having to know the soul of the creature to take its form. That has really interesting implications... hmmm...

    • @girltriesgames
      @girltriesgames  9 лет назад

      +connieleeann whoa the titans vs. dragons would be insane! What if the elven gods = dragons, the titans = the dwarves somehow??? HAHA i don't know!!

    Hold on a sec while I go and collect my blown mind from the walls.
    Aight. got it.
    This has to be the most amazing theory video since the video on Arlathan and the Black city.
    I'm at a loss for words. It followed my own line of theory and then sprang in a totally new direction and blew my mind. Let me expand on the thoughts your theorising sparked in my (now collected) mind.
    What if the Dwarves were not mindless as the elves say in the codex. But only perceived as such by the (arrogant) elven gods? And what if the Forgotten ones are directly connected to and perhaps the original source of the blight corruption?
    Malvernis is spoken as being pestilent and as we know that is the main trait of the Taint. Maybe the void and the abyss is a physical place located to the west or maybe in the sea of ash or down in the earth below the deep roads? (and real close to the ABYSSal reach)
    Malvernis could have been a forgotten one that attacked and was sealed away by the Dwarves before the others were sealed away later. And maybe he is not bound to an Avatar (High Dragon) and that explains why he is in a spirit like state rather than a physical one.
    Another tinfoil theory:
    We know that there are (were) Dwarves living way west of Thedas and that they were the rulers since they were the captains of the trade fleets that wanted lyrium when they came to Laysh in the Anderfels. Maybe the Oldest deeproads connected to the west and that the lands to the west were dwarves that worshipped the red lyrium? Maybe they were worshipping the Forgotten ones because the Stone was disconnected (because of the Fade?) and that later there was a blight like event?

    • @girltriesgames
      @girltriesgames  9 лет назад

      +I am ROSSO Thank you so much!! I think it's definitely possible that the arrogant elven gods would see others as mindless, and I most definitely think the Forgotten Ones must have had something to do with the creation of the Blight. I mean, Andruil seems to have gotten it when she travelled to the Void to hunt them!
      +Karini ni also mentioned a few comments down about the dwarves from the west who were only interested in lyrium, and I wish I had remembered to include this in the video! I also think it's interesting that the thaigs in the west were the first thaigs to fall in the First Blight.. any connections there? Ahh so many questions! We need answers!!

    Spoilers!
    If the patterns of Bioware's behavior remains true, then Dragon Age 4 will deal with the events touched upon in the DLC Descent about the dwarves and lyrium. (The Arrival dlc informed the position of Shepard in ME3's opening, Lair of the Shadow Broker is important to understand Liara's position, and Corepheus is of course introduced in a dlc in DA2) Personally I wish they didn't rely on dlc so much.

    Wrong analysis on the enemies of the Ancient Elves. Abelas told Dorian that the war of the Tevinter Imperium against the Elves NEVER happened. By the time the Imperium rose to its height of power the Elves were but a shadow of their former glory, thus enslaving them proved easy. Abelas said they waged war amongst THEMSELVES. Red Lyrium remember?
    And you should've added DIRT BAG BIANCA.

    It strikes me that you probably know the lore better than the writers. I doubt very much they have made all the connections you have. Especially stuff from DAO, while something to build on, is not necessarily stuff the writers were thinking too deeply about when crafting the future of Thedas. They know the main threads, like the major races, the blight, the problem of magic and possession, etc., but the small details you uncover are most likely not something they even remember.
    If anything, it would probably do the writers good to watch this video so that the future they are crafting takes into account the things you have found.

    • @girltriesgames
      @girltriesgames  9 лет назад +2

      +Larry Richards hahahah probably. This is all for fun! I'm sure that 99% of the things I bring up will have absolutely no relevance in future games, but I love speculation! I know, however, that the writers had a general plot for I think 7 games when they started, and David Gaider has said that most of the main storyline has been planned from the very beginning. Now, the question is, what constitutes a part of the main storyline and what is just superfluous filler?
      I have faith in the writers' world building!! lol

      +bobby jager I thought maybe so as well, but Kieran seems to think that the dwarves do not have them, and thus cannot be "taller." We've seen our fair share of golems throughout Thedas, so I don't know why they would be without them? What do you think?
