Something I noticed when I reached day 7 was that after blowing out forcefully in a continuous way in order to keep the paper on the wall as long as possible I did the Gentle Breath and had to remember to shift from the forceful exhale to a very slow controlled and minimal blowing out in order to last a full minute. It was interesting to contrast the two ways of exhaling.

LOVE the kitty! I had to save this to do later because the breathing got my cat upset. I think she thought there was something wrong with me. I will for sure watch (and practice) the whole thing later. With cats locked out of the room. Thank you Kathleen. And kitty.

Seeing the opera singer’s gut go out so far while taking a breath was really helpful. Thanks for finding and sharing that! These exercises are great. I’m already feeling success with day 1.

Wow, this is such great advice. I will start today! Thank you so much. I’ve been trying to learn to sing and I KNOW that the breath control and support is one of my biggest issues.

Thank you. I was taught the wrong way by my voice teacher. just take in the air using diapragm and sadly for decades thought was correct and now great difficulty trying to breathe correctly when I sing which is killing my singing, esp when I am doing my high notes . Your video helping me finally to undo Mrs ( ) misteaching.

Hi, Kathleen! Thank you for this really helpful video. Question: What can you recommend for strengthening the intercostal muscles? I've observed that I have pretty good strength for retaining and economizing breath, once it's in; However, I struggle with breathing deeply and quickly during vocalizing, as well as in songs that are set at faster tempos. My side and back muscles feel extremely tight and inflexible. Thank you in advance!

Glad you enjoyed the video! All of these exercises will be strengthening, but I'd recommend thinking about not just strength but about relaxation and coordination. A lot of singers actually over-breathe, or breathe more deeply than we need to, leading to too much tension. Consider reframing to use your air more efficiently rather than just working for more air. AND I *always* recommend doing anything and everything that can be done for full body health, be it strength, conditioning, stretching, massage, food, etc!

IF YOURE STILL OUT THERE QUESTION.
AFTER HEAVY MOUTH BREATHING AT 4:42 THE CROSSFADE. IT LOOKED LIKE ON FADE OUT YOU WERE GOING TO LAY DOWN. WHY? WERE YOU DIZZY?

lol... I mean, I was definitely being dramatic for the camera, but FUNNY STORY I'm always dizzy because of a chronic health thing. BUT I'M NOT DEAD, IT'S OK.

So for breathing from the diaphragm the shoulders shouldnt move cz it tights up the throat n neck but how about the chest? Is it okay if it moves? 🤔

There will definitely be movement in the ribs, and some things will always move around a little (so we aren't just statue-stiff). This is one of my favorite videos that shows engaged, low, efficient breathing. ruclips.net/video/y3xyp54bZqs/видео.html
