The last Jeep I had with an inline 6 was a 1996 Jeep Cherokee. It had 350,000 miles on it when I sold it to a friend. Last time I talked to him it had over 500,000 miles on it.
I have a 1998 Cherokee XJ, with an inline six, and it’s my baby. I wouldn’t part with it. Many years ago I sold my Scrambler and Ive regretted every since. My youngest son works on my XJ for me, now that my husband isn’t able to anymore. I’m approaching 200,000 miles on it.

Most of Chryslers inline and slant sixes are tanks. My first car was a 1980 Cordoba slant six, the build quality was junk but that motor went over 200k with nothing but oil changes and tune up every 60k. Only got rid of it because the transmissions were crap, went through 3 of them and cut it loose.
@@ronv6637 bad transmissions, wasn't worth another 1,400dollar repair. Engine still ran fine when I got rid of it, the guy I sold it to fixed it himself and gave it to his mom.

I’m 36 and always work on my own and help others. I can’t help someone with an older vehicle. I opened a hood to a 82 el Camino and had almost no idea what I’m looking at lol. I open my hood to my 23 Tundra or 23 Prius and know exactly what everything is. Change if the times I guess.
I have a 1978 CJ7 as my daily driver. Got it in 2018 after my ‘85 CJ7 decided to say goodbye to me with a bonfire at work after owning it for 20 years. No AC, no EPA crap, no power brakes or steering. Nice and basic. I change the oil in it every April whether it needs it or not and since I live in Texas it wears a bikini top 6 months out of the year. I wouldn’t trade it for anything else.

We need to get back those types of pickup trucks, not the limo's they are building today. As a note, mom would get a new Impala every three or four years back then. The whole steering and suspension system needs renewing to take the slop out of the worn joints and the tyres balanced to the max... and even then the huge centrifugal forces may throw you off the road or make steering very difficult.
@@hellbillyBob What you said is true but Jeep built the defect in. My 1998 Dodge 1500 also had the death wobble. So if Chrysler/Jeep built in the defect then maintenance may fix what Jeep screwed up. Many people have had the Jeep death wobble. Except for a few Ford 250 trucks only Chrysler and Jeep are the only ones to get the death wobble. So they built in the death wobble. If someone gave me a Jeep I would take it and sell it. No thanks.
I do like the round headlights better than the rectangular ones, but either way, I want sealed beams...not those cheezy aftermarket plastic LED things....
Yes! Those older Jeep's were great fun! But... my 1984 CJ-7 Larado... had a computer controlled carburetor that was a nightmare! Every 6 month's you'd have to rebuild it because the solenoid would get clogged! Then, the valve cover gaskets were known to leak, and cause engine fires! I had the blow out fires a few times... until I got an after market gasket, that didn't leak! Still... it was fun!👍😋😉
My dad had an 86 Jeep. Black with blue stripes, with Renegade on the hood. Rotted out really bad but it was such a fun vehicle. Sold it last year to some kid for a bush vehicle.
in all fairness, i'm by NO MEANS a mechanic, just a struggling do-it-yourselfer.. but i know how to use an obd scanner. You're not reprograming your ECM, you're just reading and clearing codes for the most part. I find the intricacies of the mechanics a much larger learning curve... sure it makes sense when you can see the WHOLE picture, but its hard to find resources that aren't either super dumbed down or super deep in the weeds. TL;DR: obd scanners are the least complicated part of car repair, save maybe understanding righty-tighty.
My renegade has been going for years, no issues, beyond almost every single light/light housing/lens has broken, along with the light housing mounts. I finally fixed the last one and have no warning lights....but in the process I noticed that the passenger front turning signal lens is broken off the housing....I just installed a new driver side front turning signal housing/lens a few days ago so at least it's all fresh in my mind. Renegades are awesome.
I have a 2015 w/85k. The only problem I've had was the notorious oil sensor issue and the radiator fan died. Both were repaired at the dealer with no cost to me. Other than that it is a great urban daily driver.
I learned to drive on a 1945 1 1/2 ton dump truck we had on the ranch, I was 14 or 15... & by then, I knew The Rules of The Road. I rarely miss any DMV questions. Now, C & M1. Mostly drive FedEx Ground Del in Sacramento, CA. Love your Vids, & Thank you for past help :-) Saved us :-)
Scotty, next find a SJ Jeep (original Cherokee) and see how you like one 360 V8, turbo 400 trans, full time 4wd,room for 6 adults with comfort, very easy to work on but gas mileage 10mpg-15mpg(downhill with tailwind)
I sure do wish they'd stop putting so much unnecessary technology in vehicles. That's one of two reasons why I won't buy a new vehicle. Can you guess what the other reason is?
Remember when every American car mfg had electrical problems? My family remembers! Yeah sure, let me buy a $70,000 Ford 150 with a plastic oil pan and EV technology! It will be done and junk before I make the last payment!
I had a CJ for a while, fun rig once I swapped to the 6 cylinder. T4 trans was junk, but the rest was good. I may get another someday as a runabout. I like the idea of a LV1 V6 for it..
Had a 2004 yellow Jeep Wrangler Sport. Loved it. Bulletproof. I wasn't that tough when I bought it, but I sure was when I sold it last year. lol Also, that wave between Jeep drivers was fun.
I had late 80s XJ Cherokees as winter beaters and I liked them but I liked them as cheap 4WD transportation. Not a big fan of solid front axles for daily driving. Mine had death wobble issues at 50 mph! The fuel injected (Renix) inline 6 were great and had some torque but I'd choose an underpowered 4Runner over that any time at the same price! So many parts were cheap in those XJ Jeeps, the window regulators, wiper transmissions, actuators and most accessories would fail!
They didn’t need to compete when it comes to XJs! We love them just the way they are. No need to change, upgrade, compete, or glorify. They’re perfect!
had an 86 jeep cherokee new. needless to say never bought another mopar product. head gasket went slave cylinder went exhaust system rotted out and fell off rear hatch door rattling. all at about 70kms. didn't know any better back then. Toyota trucks ever since.
My F150with a 2.7 L V6 engine has over 675 miles of range on a full tank and if I’m driving it nice sometimes it says I’ve got over 700 miles of range.
Scotty to Hottie, I love your videos and respect your knowledge but couldn’t disagree with you more on this one. If Jeep had continued to just build the old CJ5’s and 7’s , they would have gone bankrupt decades ago. I’ve owned several CJ’s as a kid but couldn’t comfortably do a long trip over 60 without wind. With a family now, I do trips all over the country with a relatively comfortably 2020 JLU - granted , it has waaaay to many electronics.
The first gas cars were crap too. One could say just as you pointed out some modern gas cars are crap. These problems with electric cars will be solved over time and the maintenance will be charging, weal charges and windshield fluid.
I had a 1979 CJ-7. The only things made by AMC on it was the body and rear axle. Very capable off-road, but they were rustbuckets. It rode like a brick.
My 8.1 Chevy will make it 210 miles if I’m not towing… but if it isn’t at least I know I can always fill her up back up in 5 min at a fuel station instead of waiting hours for a battery to charge 😢
Get one with a manual transmission and a good quality clutch...shouldn't have any transmission problems then...besides,a manual is better in a Jeep anyway.....
I just returned from China and they are manufacturing jeep clones over there also for about half the price here in USAA . Very hard to tell the difference except for the emblem
You might be wrong about the newer Jeeps. The aftermarket for them will keep them alive far into the future. Many throw the motor and suspension away brand new and put on the big axles, v8 Motor, lift tires and void the warranty 2 weeks after they buy it. Jeep people with money will go Bat Sh!t crazy upgrading their ride.
Yes have seen that with a guy who bought the Jeep as a company vehicle. He got a written agreement from the dealer that sold it to him that whatever mods that were factory available and fitted by the dealer would be covered under the 5 year end to end warranty. He paid $40k for the Jeep Wrangler, added $10k in Jeep factory accessories... and used the hell out of that Jeep during the 5 year warranty. It cost Jeep $5000 per year to keep his Jeep on the road. He used a pine tree trunk wedged between the body and axle as a travois to get back to civilisation after the left rear axle snapped and the wheel fell off... At the end of 5 years he took a fiberglass mould of the grille and sold off the Jeep. Then he built his own off road "Jeep" with Toyota parts and fitted that fibreglass Jeep front grille.... He bought more Jeeps for the business but only as mall crawlers...optioned to the roof, but never going off road.....
No matter who has owned Jeep over the years they have been the BEST foundation for any DIY offroader until recently. Fiat would have done well to have left it alone. Now if its a Fiat product I wouldn't even consider driving it. It is funny how struggling companies have zero self awareness and will buy a sucessful company and force fail it out of stubbournness.
I could have gone 210 miles on less than 4 gallons in my tdi golf. I drove 512 miles to myrtle beach then drove 150 miles around myrtle beach. Still had quarter of a tank left.

No thanks.
@@gdonham1203 Completely incorrect. You shouldn't ever work on any vehicle
@@hellbillyBobOpinions are like butt holes every one has one and most of them stink.
Rectangle headlights included, I'll keep driving my 87 yj, metal frame, original engine & transmission and no rust!
"Masters degree in electronics" - Hooks up obd scanner 😂
That’s how service advisors cheat their way to be cheap to make money over us techs. Thats criminal 😂🤡
in all fairness, i'm by NO MEANS a mechanic, just a struggling do-it-yourselfer.. but i know how to use an obd scanner.
I have had two Jeeps, and they are damn good vehicles, as long as you take care of them.
That lift up hood is a pretty darn good idea. I m driving a 46. CJ2A. Could have used that idea many a time.
Love your Vids, & Thank you for past help :-) Saved us :-)
No school like old school!
They CO$T twice what they are worth ?
Remember when every American car mfg had electrical problems? My family remembers! Yeah sure, let me buy a $70,000 Ford 150 with a plastic oil pan and EV technology! It will be done and junk before I make the last payment!
You don't know how to drive
Single throat carb, easiest rebuild I ever did. Steering is an adventure.
I had a 92 Jeep XJ with the inline 4.0 It was fabulous. Id buy one today if they made a new one.
That AMC 7 main bearing 6 has been around since at least the late 60s. There should be a lot of them still available used.
Owned two I6 jeeps. Great motor!
lol owned several jeeps and love the top off doors off and the freedom of owning a jeep
I had a ‘77 and ‘86 CJ7. I could work on EVERYTHING and I was 17-22!!! My ‘77 had a 304 V8 (factory) and I never flipped it Scotty!
Scotty is way too funny 😁 😂 😀 But, he's a one of a kind honest person, with a vast knowledge of automotive mechanics and technology!👍
Hand Sanitizer takes off tree sap with a wipe. The cheapest stuff works the best. If you care about the paint job, make sure to wax well afterwards.
Yeah I've got a few of those holes in my head to.
I had a 1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee 2.5 turbo diesel. One of the best cars I've ever owned.
They are absolutely fun. Leg hanging outside the door, crusin along.
Older Jeeps are solid and reliable
I had a 1984 Cherokee Chief , 4 cylinder Hurricane motor , power and torque was minimal ! And it rusted away
As far as I'm concerned, they stopped making real Jeeps back in 2006. The '06 LJ was the last worthwhile product.
Cj5 was my first and most fun vehicle!
had an 86 jeep cherokee new. needless to say never bought another mopar product. head gasket went slave cylinder went exhaust system rotted out and fell off rear hatch door rattling. all at about 70kms. didn't know any better back then. Toyota trucks ever since.
I have 01 grand cherokee. Leaks oil, transmission fluid, and has a speed wobble...I refuse to sell it xD. The inline 6 is just so reliable.
And how they shipped the old Jeeps in a big crate too
My F150with a 2.7 L V6 engine has over 675 miles of range on a full tank and if I’m driving it nice sometimes it says I’ve got over 700 miles of range.
Just had a 2018 wrangler with 86k on it have the rear diff grenade, definitely dont make em like they used to
In the Phillipines they are fixing jeeps from wwII with ss body parts that don't rust there is aways parts
Thanks for the info
I had a 1979 CJ-7. The only things made by AMC on it was the body and rear axle. Very capable off-road, but they were rustbuckets. It rode like a brick.
I had a 77 CJ5, fun off road, dangerous on the highway.
I had one too. 3 speed manual with a fiberglass tub. Traded it for a vmax. Never should have got rid of it.
Quadratec is supposed to have kits.
My 8.1 Chevy will make it 210 miles if I’m not towing… but if it isn’t at least I know I can always fill her up back up in 5 min at a fuel station instead of waiting hours for a battery to charge 😢
Scotty talks about how long lasting the 86 keep is even though it’s like grandpas axe and very little of the original remains.
I drive 88 YJ with original paint
I heard the $120K Wrangler doesn’t have mechanical issues.
Ive heard jeeps tend to have transmission and elecrical problems, but then i figure most beat the crap out of them too
Get one with a manual transmission and a good quality clutch...shouldn't have any transmission problems then...besides,a manual is better in a Jeep anyway.....
Jeeps were pretty good up through the 2006 TJ model. After that it was all down hill
Just Empty Every Pocket sort of says it all for the cost of keeping one running.
Soooo, we should go back to model T?
Best vehicle ive ever owned was a 1974 Jeep CJ 5 soft top with a straight 6, 3 speed tranny.
Wish they were still made, id never own anything else.
drives like a truck, rides like a truck, sounds like a school bus
thats fine with me, id still take it over your prius
@@cantwealljustgetalong2 I'd take a prius any day
Jeep Just Ended Production and Owners are Screwed....? Nothing expanded on this.
Ill just buy a replica Jeep CJ 8 in the Phillippines and keep it 4 ever. 😅😂
I just returned from China and they are manufacturing jeep clones over there also for about half the price here in USAA . Very hard to tell the difference except for the emblem
All Scotty does is rant & talk crap, that's all I ever see him do.
I think he means the Cherokees just ended production and parts will eventually dry up.
No production means no parts.
Isnt the Renegade made in Italy?
Yes just look at the driver side door jam sticker
I’m not a fan of the new v6 .. I wish they put the small v8 in instead
Worst thing about that Jeep is those gawd-awful cheezy LED headlights somebody put in it..put some good old Halogen sealed beams back in it....
Scotty, maybe you wouldn't need to retire if you could stop them from shoving you in a trunk.
Scotty’s best video.
This is what love looks like 👍
I like that old Jeep, nothing like old school fun, they can keep the new ones. I would love to tell Ford where to stick their Lightning trucks
No matter who has owned Jeep over the years they have been the BEST foundation for any DIY offroader until recently. Fiat would have done well to have left it alone. Now if its a Fiat product I wouldn't even consider driving it. It is funny how struggling companies have zero self awareness and will buy a sucessful company and force fail it out of stubbournness.
scotty always has the good advice but idk about the future of ev part 🤣 your a professional ev basher
EVs suck right now. Hybrids are awesome except for the price and the complexity.
I need that jeep now!!!
Back in 86 we had the answer gov is just out for themselves. Maybe pot was the best idea Idk!
Yep a Jeep isn't a Jeep unless it's a Willy/Wrangler. A Hummer isn't a Hummer unless it's a H1.
Hayduke would be proud of that jeep!
Daisy?
Scotty I live in Texas and my garage is almost always heated just from the sun or in the summer it’s overheated 😂
In texas I buy a new car battery every 3 years cause of the heat
What's better, Jeep, or Toyota Land cruiser, or Land Rover, Ford Bronco, or VW Bug, ..1 to 5, with 1 being Best, 5, being less best
I could have gone 210 miles on less than 4 gallons in my tdi golf. I drove 512 miles to myrtle beach then drove 150 miles around myrtle beach. Still had quarter of a tank left.
What are the Toyota news ?
Nothing🤦.
Except Scotty is scared of his wife 5:41 & can't afford a new tooth
I loved every Jeep I've owned. Once the newer ones break, they're just broken. Most on the used lots have the 4×4 disabled.
"Most on the used lots have the 4x4 disabled." Im sure that's not true, if so, why?
@@BillDollar777 because it's broken.
@cynicalbuddha1660 I figured you were saying intentionally disabled for some reason. True, they can run just fine without it.
@@BillDollar777 a bad transfer case, like antilock brakes, don't stop a car from working just fine.
Main issue , no. AC compressor
Due you know where i can get a 1993 Chrysler code reader??
CAFE and crash safety standards killed a lot of great jeep models.
Jeeps are a national treasure and so is Scotty!
jeeps are garbage
When did this video originate?? Gloves hoodie no leaves. Im trimming trees and mowing lol
He still shows new videos from his Houston days.
