We understand that people have different feelings about which ver. is better Korean or Jpn . But we can all agree that this is definitely the best version
All versions get me emotional, but I personally prefer Korean version the most. There’s just something about Taeyeon and Jonghyun’s vocals that give the song so much more emotion.
Since Zhang Li-yin is a veteran singer (she debuted in 2006), I think that she is able to fit with Chen's usually very strong voice nicely. This is my favorite version of 'Breath' -- and it's pretty much because of Zhang Li-yin. She's such a nice vocalist and able to do stunning duets with a rookie like Chen. Either way, SM The Ballad, fighting!
Chen is so awesome! Considering the fact that he's not Chinese, and he doesn't really know Mandarin, yet he's able to sing a Chinese song (and his pronunciations are pretty accurate considering the fact that he doesn't know Chinese really well)! Zhang li yin is so underrated, girl has angelic voice it amazes me how her voice alone can convey so much emotion when she sings. sm should be heavily promoting an artist with a voice like that..i bet it would've been a different case if she's in another company who can nurture her talent since sm is focusing more in producing idol groups

I just watched a live performance of this on SBS MTV The Show and at the beginning, Chen fans did fanchants for him. I was happy but also a little sad because I thought they would only just do it for him. But then it was Liyin's part and they also did a fanchant for Liyin. It made me :'). Chen fans support Liyin :'). I think she is gaining a lot of new fans through these promotions, myself included. She's the sweetest person, and sings like angel. Really matches with Chen.

Okay I admit that I am Chen biased but I think this version was the best because Zhang Li Yin's voice built up throughout the song perfectly and also the Chinese language just sounds prettier and more emotional and suits ballads best. Chen was great and his voice blended with hers better than the other duos in my opinion.
Out of all the three, I think this is really the best version. Not being biased or anything, but I think even if I don't stan EXO and I was made to choose between the three versions, this is what I will choose. I just think that in the Korean version, Jonghyun and Taeyeon's voice doesn't blend well that good.. I felt that for a song so mellow they both have very strong and powerful vocals that the balance is gone. While in the Japanese version both Changmin and Krystal have very soft voices and it's too soft for my taste. But in here, they blended it well really well. Chen has a powerful voice and LiYin's voice is so soft... but man, when they hit that bridge in the last part... i just felt the goosebumps. It's like a tidal wave, and the chemistry of their voices is so amazing... I hope they collaborate more.. :))
ZhangLiYin has a very powerful voice...but she knows how to handle her voice and complement with her duet partner...Taeyeon voice is not very powerful...You must listen to other songs from ZhangLiYin
A lot of people asks me [especially those who are older than me] why I listen to kpop [particularly and ALWAYS, EXO songs] even though I don't understand the the lyrics at all. I would just shrug it off because I am not really good in verbal stuffs especially on things where I have to defend myself. But really, I don't have to understand the lyrics to know a good song. This is far better than songs with language I could understand. When I first listen to this song, I SWEAR, I was tearing up and I felt really sad. Perhaps it has something to do with how the singers sang it. This is also what happened when I listened to EXO's Miracles in December and Baby Don't Cry. There's soul, passion, heart and emotion. This is SM. :) Fighting!
If you say chen's Chinese is not good, compare mama with this. He improved lots! Although I admit I can't really figure out some words but at least most of the words can be understandable. Chen's part are full of longing ,regret, pain, passion .I love how female part is intepret by Zhang Yi Lin she sometimes very softly sings specially phrases regarding caringness for her lover even after break up ,someparts very powerful the regret,longing . The lyrics are different in male female solo parts that emotional delivery is outstanding .

I think it's because Chinese is a really flowly language, it just suits it's best... The Japanese version is great but the language is very consonanty if you know what I mean so the song doesn't flow as nicely

I think it's not just because they're luhans fans but also because luhan is actually chinese and a pretty good singer so I can see why they would say that. Chen does a really good job with this song though!
As others have said, Chen's pronunciation is off because he's not a native speaker of the language. But I think the delivery and emotion of the song made up for that. As for not picking a native speaker: maybe they didn't have the range the song needed. Chen has a very wide vocal range. Also, Liyin and Chen's voices harmonized almost flawlessly. It was a great pleasure to hear from such phenomenal vocals :) The emotional depth this version brought was deeper than the others in my opinion. I thoroughly enjoyed this version :) Looking forward to what they have in store for both of them in the future :)
I think this is the best version of all 3. Chen and Zhang Li Yin's voices blend together perfectly without one outshining the other (unlike the other 2). Their emotions are portrayed really well and those high notes were hit perfectly. All in all it's a beautiful song but I just have to point out: WHY DIDN'T SHE JUST PULL CHANGMIN TOWARDS THE SIDE OF THE ROAD INSTEAD?! She obviously had enough time to do so if she managed to push him out of the way. And Changmin also obviously saw the car so why didn't he just step forwards or backwards?! Anyway, besides the very interesting MV, song is gorgeous~!!

Yes. This is the best version. SM The Ballad is not the matter of who owns the most beautiful voice, but who can sing the song with passion and deep feeling. At first, I thought there must be something wrong with this song, why Taeyeon (who is one of my fav vocalist in SM) cannot even sing the song deeply .. and then I was like ... 'okay... it's a boring song'. However .....these two blends very well, their voices got a serious chemistry and ... this is the only version which make me wanna cry :'D I almost cannot believe,.. Li Yin and Chen have a very good interpretation about the songs, they put the right emotion.

I think a lot of people are just hating on invalid reasons. Yes, Chen is Korean and his Chinese pronunciation can be off but from debut till now, it has improved by leaps and bounds. I'm Chinese and it is not a easy language to learn. Singing duets has to have a certain compatibility. luhan has a very soft voice and LiYin's voice would've overpowered his, not to mention there are ranges and pitches that Chen can reach that Luhan may not be able to reach. Just enjoy the song.

I think they chose Chen for this because they think (and is probably true) Chen has the best singing voice in Exo even if he isn't a native speaker of Chinese Mandarin...Baekhyun, Luhan and some others are also very good but I suppose they picked the best....
you may say chen's voice is just suitable for chinese songs, thats why he's chosen to be the main vocalist of exo-m, while baekhyun and D.O are for exo-k...its all about the texture of the voices.

I remember when this was first released, this song really pulled on my heart strings and it still does omg. Chen and Liyin's vocals together are godly tbh, plus they do a really good job of building up the intensity of the song (Liyin esp, she's SO gifted and knows what she's doing). This is def my fav version, with Japanese in 2nd and Korean last.

I felt that for a song so mellow they both have very strong and powerful vocals that the balance is gone. While in the Japanese version both Changmin and Krystal have very soft voices and it's too soft for my taste. But in here, they blended it well really well. Chen has a powerful voice and LiYin's voice is so soft... but man, when they hit that bridge in the last part... i just felt the goosebumps. It's like a tidal wave, and the chemistry of their voices is so amazing... I hope they collaborate more.. :))

You've got to be kidding me with your biased opinion.
A lot of people asks me [especially those who are older than me] why I listen to kpop [particularly and ALWAYS, EXO songs] even though I don't understand the the lyrics at all. I would just shrug it off because I am not really good in verbal stuffs especially on things where I have to defend myself.
But really, I don't have to understand the lyrics to know a good song. This is far better than songs with language I could understand. When I first listen to this song, I SWEAR, I was tearing up and I felt really sad. Perhaps it has something to do with how the singers sang it. This is also what happened when I listened to EXO's Miracles in December and Baby Don't Cry. There's soul, passion, heart and emotion. This is SM. :) Fighting!

The lyrics are different in male female solo parts that emotional delivery is outstanding .

As others have said, Chen's pronunciation is off because he's not a native speaker of the language. But I think the delivery and emotion of the song made up for that. As for not picking a native speaker: maybe they didn't have the range the song needed. Chen has a very wide vocal range. Also, Liyin and Chen's voices harmonized almost flawlessly. It was a great pleasure to hear from such phenomenal vocals :) The emotional depth this version brought was deeper than the others in my opinion. I thoroughly enjoyed this version :) Looking forward to what they have in store for both of them in the future :)

I think this is the best version of all 3. Chen and Zhang Li Yin's voices blend together perfectly without one outshining the other (unlike the other 2). Their emotions are portrayed really well and those high notes were hit perfectly. All in all it's a beautiful song but I just have to point out: WHY DIDN'T SHE JUST PULL CHANGMIN TOWARDS THE SIDE OF THE ROAD INSTEAD?! She obviously had enough time to do so if she managed to push him out of the way. And Changmin also obviously saw the car so why didn't he just step forwards or backwards?! Anyway, besides the very interesting MV, song is gorgeous~!!

And I have one favorite version (the japanese one,maybe because Changmin is singing and acting and he could passes all the emotions). So,we have to compare the versions in our own opinion,you know? SM The Ballad is not the matter of who owns the most beautiful voice, but who can sing the song with passion and deep feeling. At first, I thought there must be something wrong with this song, why Taeyeon (who is one of my fav vocalist in SM) cannot even sing the song deeply .. and then I was like ... 'okay... it's a boring song'.
However .....these two blends very well, their voices got a serious chemistry and ... this is the only version which make me wanna cry :'D I almost cannot believe,.. Li Yin and Chen have a very good interpretation about the songs, they put the right emotion.

I think a lot of people are just hating on invalid reasons. Yes, Chen is Korean and his Chinese pronunciation can be off but from debut till now, it has improved by leaps and bounds. I'm Chinese and it is not a easy language to learn. Singing duets has to have a certain compatibility. luhan has a very soft voice and LiYin's voice would've overpowered his, not to mention there are ranges and pitches that Chen can reach that Luhan may not be able to reach. Just enjoy the song.

This is the version that I bought on iTunes. Chen's powerful voice is everything plus Zhang's native accent makes it sound like a mandopop song.
I think they chose Chen for this because they think (and is probably true) Chen has the best singing voice in Exo even if he isn't a native speaker of Chinese Mandarin...Baekhyun, Luhan and some others are also very good but I suppose they picked the best....
and i think it's because luhan is already in another group (younique unit)
you may say chen's voice is just suitable for chinese songs, thats why he's chosen to be the main vocalist of exo-m, while baekhyun and D.O are for exo-k...its all about the texture of the voices.

Actually jongdae's Chinese improve al lot. And it's just like about 2 years since he debut! Why do we need to compare his Chinese pronounciation with a Chinese people? I remember when this was first released, this song really pulled on my heart strings and it still does omg. Chen and Liyin's vocals together are godly tbh, plus they do a really good job of building up the intensity of the song (Liyin esp, she's SO gifted and knows what she's doing). This is def my fav version, with Japanese in 2nd and Korean last.

I was a little disappointed in the korean version because Taeyeon is usually capable of giving an amazing emotional performance , but she didn't this time .
