I recently bought my first ev, a 2021 Ford Mach e premium awd long range. I only cost me $30k out the door with just 22k miles. This was cheaper than any comparable ice vehicle I found. In 4000 miles of driving, I have never had to use public charging, but sometimes do just to patronize the business model to show demand. I needed to have some pie and coffee anyway, lol. The worst range I have seen is 180 miles, when it was 5 degrees, and I didn't prewarm the car. When it is warm I get at least 250 miles range. I am putting in solar to direct charge. I can't see going back to ICE. Saving money every day, and easily the most fun to drive car I've had in my 54 years of driving. It's funny the negative comments I get, but mostly I get lots of questions from curious people. I live in a remote town of 800 people, there are very few EVs here, most people are curious, so I take a moment to try and be a good embasador. I did get a spare wheel though. A flat with no spare was my biggest negative of the car.
Went to Everything electric in London. Took my family (3 energetic daughters 7,9,12). They loved it. The show loved them. Lot's of competitions, many free-bee's and a huge inflatable. They won't stop badgering me to by an electric car.
Hi Robert: A quick tip for you when driving your Tesla; Spend a little time investigating the voice commands. One that I use all the time in our Teslas (Model 3 Highland and Model X Long Range) is I‘M HOT or I‘M COLD. These change the aircon by 1.5C down or up… Also easy com mands for heated seats and steering wheel (eg: MY HANDS ARE COLD)…. It is a very unusual day when I need to touch the screen whilst on the move…
@@richf3654 🤣🤣🤣🤣 FFS! And what happens if the driver is mute? Or if a driver is deaf? (Think about that for a moment.) You just don't know too much about life, do you.
Elliot love your work and videos on bringing us Chinese EV automotive industry closers. Yeah you could really see legacy aitomakers coming out strong in Beijing. Keep up with great work 😊❤
One of the most interesting and enjoyable EV conversations I’ve heard in a long time though I really don’t know why. It must be this combination of personalities?
The BYD plan is to take on Ford and Toyota with their own hybrid models to become an established brand and to take some market share whilst in a few years offering an electric equivalent model option. It's all about becoming an established brand that can then at some point flick the switch and phase out hybrids and make solely pure electric vehicles.
At the moment Toyota is killing it with their hybrids in Oz and NZ gov slapped a 7.6c/km road user charge on BEVs and ~ 5c on PHEV and nothing on Toyota hybrids. My guess is BYD said "If that's how you want to play ,we can do that as well" Same with factories in Mexico when US put tarifs on Chinese stuff.
From the report, the Japanese have *not* shown they know how to build an EV for China, they have shown they know how to *badge* a Chinese EV for sale under their brand.
@@jasonmugridge Surely you jest 😂😂😂 You might care to Google Image the car holding areas around our ports. You might spot the odd few thousands of Chinese imports lying around waiting for a dealership to find space on a forecourt ... once he's shifted what he's got. And you shouldn't forget the fleet buyers who aren't having an easy time shifting three year old ex lease/rental cars into a very small market. The economists amongst you will recognise the huge oversupply of used cars and consequently understand the financial issues. Battery powered cars will, eventually, be recognised as yet another financial and environmental disaster. People such as Elon will not be remembered with affection. And, on the topic of batteries, those of you who understand such things will know that "powerwalls"/domestic battery storage is now not quite the thing. The fire risk from batteries is now better understood. Why not research BS63100, introduced at the end of March '24. Or search for any of the sparkies' platforms on YT. A lot of livings rely on the installation of domestic solar/battery systems. Yet more financial woe.
As a mechanic I saw the writing on the wall for petrol and diesel engines as no more innovations were coming out they had exhausted pardon the pun all ideas on how to make the engine more efficient but one bright spark came up with the hybrid system for a motor to help the engine along under load hence burning less fuel sound good you say well it started off that way but every year the emissions get tighter some companies wrote in cheat codes to give false emissions when tested like VW and many others basically hybrids are a cheat to make the engine run more efficient well not always as a lot of customers find out, Would I buy one Not on your LIFE they are ultra complicated there is so much to go wrong and they often do most times the battery are too small so they don't give enough power to the motor hence poor mpg. The trouble is there are so many mugs who believe all they are told about hybrids instead of doing their own investigating and finding out for themselves what the crack with hybrids now I am not saying they are all bad but there are a lot which fail the mpg test and older people like me are hard nuts to crack for innovation like going electric until I looked into it and 18 months later after owning one I am so glad I took the plunge I have saved hundreds of pound worth of fuel the service took 20 minutes while you wait I hardly drank my cup of complimentary cup of coffee from the dealers and they had washed it as well to boot all they changed was the wiper blades and it was ready for another year or more before the next service the brakes after 11000 miles were 99 per cent I have never had to clean my wheels no brake dust weird as all I did on my ICE cars was clean them once a week as they would be black with dust it cost me 6 pounds seventy-five pence to charge a week instead of thirty quid in petrol need I say more.
Great insight into the Chinese EV market. Wanted to get an EV car but could not justify the high new prices so bought a Seat Mii electric 2300 miles and only a couple of years old for 13k. Totally agree a fantastic car and is very economical. It has heated seats, windscreen and LKA. Compared to some a basic car, but this is what is needed. On this video you came across as a Tesla hater!! You don't have to be a Tesla fan boy but at least acknowledge what they have done for the EV market.
I'm in Africa and I'm really starting to feel left out. My country makes cars yet we don't see the benefit. If car makers really stop making ICEs after 2035 then the developing world is going to get left behind and it's going to have an enormous economic impact as I'm sure the cost of fossil fuels will skyrocket! It would be great if this podcast could do a show about the EV revolution in developing countries - 2 wheels, instead of 4 - awa as plans for bringing affordable EV cars etc to Africa etc. How are things in S America? Many chinese automakers are looking to open factories in Mexico for the usa market, but could also bring EVs to the S American continent as well. Have govs here waking up (adapting the grid awa building recharge infrastructure)?
I imagine as the pool of possible sales outlets dwindles in Europe and America, Africa will be flooded with cheap ICE cars as the big motor manufacturers look for alternative markets to dump their cars on. A bit like smoking, it’s virtually gone in parts of Europe, Great Britain and America but elsewhere everyone has a cigarette stuck in the mouths !
@@stevenbarrett7648 Sure, but they are right that gasoline prices will skyrocket in remaining markets if Europe really stops using it. The US might be able to make up for the difference with subsidies (as we have always done) but countries with much less economic power will feel the brunt of the price shift.
@@stevenbarrett7648 I very much fear you are right! Although cigarettes & coke cola are not the only things dumped in developing countries... toxic chemicals in the form of herbicides & pesticides (and I'm sure other nasties) too!
There's not even a reliable electricity supply in South Africa.....let alone a charging network...and that's supposed to be one of the richest and most organised countries. So it's a problem. I imagine hybrids will last longer there.
@@timmurphy5541 It depends how SA approaches EV adoption. Ideally owners should charge at home overnight, using private solar. And V2G tech could provide energy storage during peak demand, actually helping reduce loadshedding. ANY EV charging should be via solar anyway - so instead of petrol 1Stops, we could have solar 1stops with coffee shops, fastfood restaurants & maybe some entertainment while customers charge. In the UK you can charge whilst doing a grocery shop. SA will meed to rethink "filling up" and make it fun, accessible (coffee shops with WiFi) & affordable (using solar & battery storage, not the grid which burns gas & diesel and a bit of coal). In many countries EV adoption has actually resulted in reduced electricity demand.
I was given a hybrid Kia as a courtesy car and I'd forgotten how awful petrol stations are and how expensive petrol is having driven EVs for 9 years. I don't understand the concept of a hybrid ... I love Elliot's insights.
In the early days the hybrid used the battery as a helper to the ice engine and it cut down emissions and gave good mpg. These days the hybrids can run on battery alone and,as he said in the video, app 40 miles. To my mind this is a good thing. It immediately reduces range anxiety so, if you had to commute to your work in the city, You can drive there on the ice engine and if entering a ULEZ zone for example could easily switch over to battery where pollution is usually highest then switch back when leaving the zone Yes I know it doesn't fully cure WORLD pollution but it would help a lot. Also if they were being promoted they would have made a good stepping stone to a full ev when maybe cost has come down and/or battery technology has vastly improved.
At least in the U.S., with typical high public DCFAST charge rates, hybrids cost less to fuel. In Oregon, the average public EV charger rate is $0.43/kWh. The average price per gallon of gasoline is $4.60. A Toyota Prius gets 57 mpg combined. So it would cost $4.60 to travel 57 miles in a Prius. A Tesla Model 3 SR uses ~0.29 kWh/mile. To travel 57 miles at $0.43/kWh would cost 57 miles × 0.29 kWh/mile × $0.43/kWh = $7.11.
@@steverichmond7142 I'm just commenting on one of the things that regularly come up and possibly hold some people back . I'm not bothered either way as I can't afford one anyway so I'm not in the market. A citroen Ami would do my day to day needs so no way am I buying an expensive ev just to do a few thousand miles a year.
All the videos of this quality that I watch on this channel, and especially this one warning us of the coming tsunami of Chinese EVs, make me extremely worried for French and European brands. Here, we criticise the state's support for Chinese cars, but we pretend not to see their quality, their abundance, their inventiveness and their speed of implementation. In France, we were still marvelling recently at the small groove on the rear pillar (my god, what genius!) of the new Renault Symbioz, while the interiors of all the new European models are outdated, their batteries chineese and their recharging lagging behind. I really regret that we don't have a show of this calibre on this side of the Channel.
Actually you have a similar program and channel on RUclips in France. It's called "La Chaine EV". Les 2 gars qui présentent sont sympa et professionnels dans leur présentations.
Robert, Tesla just had Tom Tzu back to run the China factory. They will be making a more affordable model on their current car line. This will probably be the small hatchback you are hoping for. They can get the cost down by using CATL's new battery tech as well as incorporating some of their new 48 volt and steer by wire tech... along with new assembly processes.
Apparently we in the US don’t get the Chinese either…..as they keep building Cole power generating plants every week for the Electricity needed where we in the US are being stupid and shutting them down.
Great podcast, but I must admit I settled straight in to using Tesla Model 3 Highland. Made more sense to me not having indicator stalks. Button press to turn on and again to turn off, if it didn't auto cancel. Previous car indicators often didn't cancel and when you cancelled, it indicated the opposite way! I have found it so easy to use the buttons and to me the screen offers up options in bottom corner if you need to change settings for lights or indicators, after tapping the relevant button on the steering wheel. Most times I never touch the screen as voice commands work well for heat/cool and music selection. It is always interesting to see what China can produce at a super low price.
I've not really understood why people go hybrid. I get that some see it as a stepping stone towards a proper BEV, but I just see them as not getting away from the expense of running an ICE engine and transmission. I considered the Vauxhall Ampera when I made the leap away from ICE, but I'm glad I went full EV now I look back. This is one of only two cars I can think of that are done properly (in my humble opinion). A hybrid should be an EV first with a back up generator as in the BMW i3 or Ampera.
I have the Chevy Volt. In my area the DC fast charging infrastructure is only now building out after my 12 years of ownership. Most trips are electric for me except when I go out of town. The gasoline generator is mostly pristine and the brakes are like new due to regenerative braking. By 2025 fully electric will finally be possible no matter my destination.
@@HablaCarnage63 I think 2025 is a good estimate. It's not that EVs aren't out there that can do anything you might require, it's that they initially cost more to buy/ or no mature second hand market yet and that there is work required on the charging infrastructure. These should both be sorted soon.
A really good episode. It’s great to be getting the heads up on what’s happening in China from Elliot. I always said if the Chinese get a foot hold in Europe the European car industry will really struggle to survive. You’ve only got to look at the Japanese car makers in the 70s they killed British leyland as it was then
It's been reported that the EU and by extension the UK that they are looking at tariffs on Chinese cars. Just when we need cheap cars they will kill that for those who cannot afford the current models available. The assumption is that if the Chinese cars are similar in price prospective buyers will buy the established makers cars. I don't think so they just won't buy one at all because they don't have the money to splash out on an expensive car. If you double the reported Chinese prices especially on the small mini/city type cars they will not be seen as good value. Fair enough but apart from the Citroen Ami (which isn't a car) there are no small car options for those who just want a small runaround?? The result will be the ev target figures will not be met.
@@t1n4444 It was more that BL could not afford to develop new cars so they usually ended up with a parts bin car. Same as the bike industry. They had some really good ideas and prototypes they just couldn't translate that to an actual production car.
@@tivvy-xf4kzthe first part of the EU investigation came out the other week. Their numbers estimated that given their current profit level, even with a 50% subsidy BYD would still be able to sell their cars profitability at their current prices. I think that subsidy will probably be a lot less effective than the EU initially expected.
45:00 that's crazy good sport among direct competitors! It's hard to see big executives anywhere on Earth showing that kind of grace, that's an eye-opener!
My neighbor in Huizhou got the new Xiaomi about a month ago, blue with red interior, Founders Edition. Later my wife said she saw 3 of them parked in front of his villa and the two new owners were also former Mercedes Benz owners. It made me think since Xiaomi was built by Mercedes is this the path the Benz owners will take? You see, Benz cars for the Chinese market (and export) are contract manufactured by BAIC in Beijing and so is Xiaomi, and the lead designers came from MB and BMW in Germany.
Xiaomi is a factory built by itself, but producing cars in China requires a qualification certificate. Xiaomi only borrowed the qualification certificate from BAIC, so don't be superstitious about old brand manufacturers. BAIC is not popular in China, and many of the electric car cemeteries filmed by yt Anti China Channel are almost all cars produced by BAIC that did not meet market needs in the early years. Based on the developed manufacturing industry in China, the quality of Xiaomi, xpeng, nio, li Auto's cars is not inferior to traditional car companies
@@dingxiong8604 Xiaomi actually got their manufacturing license several years ago and it was a bit weird since they didn't even have a factory. They teamed up with BAIC which had built several car factories already, and BAIC is running the factory. BAIC is popular only in Beijing where they have 72000 taxis and their EU5 was the number one back in 2016. They have quite a good reputation as a reliable and well made cars. Our Arcfox dealer calls every two weeks and tries to sell us one. My wife says:"Back in 2020 you sold us the EC3 and said it will last 10 years because the drivetrain is basically the same as in millions of taxis. Why should we replace it?" That frustrates him. The EC3 is the car you see on some videos, (it is the previous model EC180) several hundred of them on the same field. The reason what I have heard is that they used to be rental cars and the company went bankrupt. The bank then took them over but couldn't sell them, there was a court case that prevented them from doing so. The EC180 charging speed and range was not suitable for a shared&rental cars, but the updated EC3 is a lot better. My wife drives 110km to Shenzhen and charges it for 10 minutes to drive back (from 40 to 80%). Full charge gives 290km but 80km on a motorway eats up half of the battery.
Our EC3 cost about 8000USD new and now it's worth about half. Price is getting close to where the RV guys are starting to buy them for their battery modules. They are good for running A/C for all day without the engine running.
Was this comment written by Elliott's mum? His take on Tesla missed by a mile. Tesla postponed "model 2" not becuase of work on the Cybertruck but to fully concentrate on AI development. Musk has said Tesla will invest $10 billion this year on AI hardware alone so trying to ramp up a new "unboxed" production process for the model 2 at the same time could cripple them financially. Hence the massive layoffs to cut costs and announcement to release new interim models using existing production lines.
@@vw5861 I think his point was Cybertruck shouldn't even exist and is a waste of time and resources and that Tesla should have concentrated on Model 2 before the Cybertruck. Concentrating on AI, when the Chinese are coming in such numbers with companies concentrating solely on producing the best electric cars possibly at the best possible price is a major mistake.
They will not age well. Repairs here in California cost $150 an hour. Used ones will depreciate rapidly. The cost to maintain them will not be worth repairing them. We need more used BEVS for future markets.
She was blaming the Tesla for killing her dad. It was proved that it was drivers fault and oil companies were paying her to transport this car around protesting the UN truths about Tesla.
Hi Elliot, can you tell us about the state of the charging network in China, do they have underground flats parking charging as standard, how do people charge the cars, at home or at commercial street charging? Cheers
Great podcast, always fantastic to hear from Elliot and Robert. Although I think you forget what a huge Tesla fan base listen to your show. Robert you want to chop in your Model 3 for a BMW? The model 3 will last you another 20 years and get you safely to the shops when you’re not up to driving anymore. BMWs still have a dealer model, still need to be serviced including their brushed electric motors (yes they brought them back from the past to give them something to service). All because you dislike Elon Musk? It can’t be because you don’t like Tesla, BMW’s Neue Klasse is a less aerodynamic model 3 copy with a Tesla badge. Name one person that has done more to better humankind this century? On the one hand you get all worked up over lies from legacy media on climate change as do I. But then believe all the propaganda about Elon Musk. Find out a bit about the guy, read is Auto biography. I think your criticisms are unfounded.
The woman who protested Tesla in China was wrongly protesting the brakes. She was later found to be wrong, and or lying, and subsequently forced to publicly apologize.
Love the video, great to see and hear you both conversing. It also inspired me. Could you please make a video that compares the emissions of an electric engine, a diesel engine, a petrol engine and a hydrogen engine and their costs, not only to the environment, also their cost to human health directly? I think this will be very informative and help people make better informed choices. Please create it, please? 🙏🥹 Love all your work and keep it 🙂🙏
I did enjoy that. Robert, your chats with people you know are so much more relaxed than those with boffins in fields you know nothing about .. from a scientific perspective that is. Perhaps Imogen is better suited for those.
I believe the incident with the lady who jumped on a car last year at the Shanghai show was complaining about her partner's Tesla brakes failing and making it crash.... But of course the datalogs showed it was found that it was the usual "user error" in hitting the accelerator by mistake and trying to claim a free car. She got busted needless to say, and had to post a public retraction and apology.
What I would like is an episode on the cyber cab as soon as we know more about that because I am one of those people who doesn’t want to add more passenger vehicles to the equation and I would rather we build non-ownership mobility up so that we can call on and get to the point where being mobile doesn’t cost so much because everybody needs easy access that is also sustainable for the massive surge we are seeing to greater urbanization. That way, the cost of mobility can come down to match our amount of usage. Because I only use mine to commute to and from work and maybe to do my grocery shop.
You could work from home if your occupation isn't a manual hands on thing. And you can get your groceries delivered if you live in a locale which supports such. A lot of my neighbours have retired and have their groceries delivered. And of course the Amazon man is not a stranger either. With a bit of planning it's not that difficult to go at least a light shade of green.
That is more true than most people think, a huge part of the profit of legacy car makers, is on the after sale support/parts sales and ICE cars have a huge amount of parts that can break on the motor alone.
Not having heard of the woman protesting against Tesla, I had to look it up. She wore a t-shirt saying 'Break failure' in Chinese and claimed that the Tesla had caused a serious crash. She was sued by Tesla, no fault was found by independent checks All very well but the report included the full VIN number of the car!!
I did enjoy hearing from Elliot Richards. He has a nice way of presenting with intelligence, candor, and polished warm demeanor. Elliott, nice job. Hearing from Robert Llewellyn....well, at least we know why patreon funding is slipping on a downward trend.
Got a ev , a few months old , so second owner with low miles. Price deal was a main driver . At present many of these far east models have to many unnecessary gimbbish ( new word) features , or for example 3 different ways to put car into park ? , 4 ways to open the boot ?or 3 ways to start the car? . Totally unnecessary. Instead they are satisfied to sell them with no lumber support , no reclining rear seats , no hatch from boot into cabin . My ones got a American English speaking lady ,so you go into the translation dropdown where there are 3 options to hit , one being english english ( which my kids wanted) , sadly the other 2 options arnt available.
Really glad you shared negative views on cars with only or mainly touch screens. Even if I could afford a Tesla, the screen would be the main reason not to buy one. The eNiro I drive still has 4 knobs and some buttons which I will miss when its time to get a new Niro EV.
We’re building a charging infrastructure to suit the modest range of EVs and when 250-350 is the norm, rollout will slow down and prices will fall. Might this be a reason why Tesla are divesting in new sites and looking to yield more from existing sites?
This is another misrepresentation from media. Tesla fired these people when their manager would not identify which 10% to let go. Has she done her job it would only had been 10%. Tesla will hire back the people needed to do the job.
Or how about that the scer network growth the past 24+month's well outpaced overall car production? And tesla knows from their own data the cars charge at home or work 85-95% of the time. Also opening the tesla connector up established nacs as the J3400 standard and anyone can now build tesla compatible chargers! Autonomous robotaxis will need wireless inductive charging as well, guess what the bought out by tesla wiferion co does? And guess what tesla showed off last year as coming soon and Lars has hinted at multiple times? Yup a home inductive charger! Guess what multiple teardowns have confirmed the ct is pre wired for? Yup a wireless inductive charger. It all ads up nicely for those of us with multiple brain cells left to rub together. I love Elons war mode! Buckle up&hold onto your butts people.👍🏻😀
Robert, BYD actually is not a start-up in the way that NIO, Xiaomi, Xpeng, and Leapmotor are. Although it was a successful phone battery company, it did get its car making license in the more conventional way, as other legacy automakers did. It purchased a (no account) little state-owned automaker called Qinchuan and began its foray in, by making boring ICE models, such as its Corolla knockoff.
It's sad that my concern about sustainability spoils most of my excitement with electric CARS even though I am so excited by the end of fossil fuels and the electrification of the world. It's the electrification of all the things like building, digging and tunnelling and transporting goods that excite me more.
Robert, as you are/were a Model 3 owner, I’m baffled about your ‘complaint’ about heater settings. My M3LR has THE best voice recognition by far of any car I’ve owned. Just press the steering wheel button and say ‘I’m hot/cold’ rather than using the screen. ‘My feet are hot/cold’ to adjust the floor vents. 95% of things can be done this way. Surely this is a step forward?
The cybertruck was necessary to optimise the production of steer-by-wire, 48V, ethernet ring, etc. at a lower scale to get the kinks worked out before ramping the vast unboxed production methodology for the next gen car. 4D chess move. In summary, the CT DIDN'T "take their eyes off the next gen car", it de-risked it.
I think the CT is another one of Elons vanity projects, like putting gull wing doors on the X, and this has distracted Tesla from producing what every one wants - a smaller/cheaper car.
I believe the new electric Toyotas and Mazdas were based on Chinese model platforms, some even having just cosmetic bodywork changes to differentiate them from the Chinese cars they were based on. Their own JDM know how is too far behind the Chinese for them to compete directly. The future for legacy makers looks like collaboration with Chinese companies or producing cars in China for the export market, a bit like Tesla do at the moment.
You really need to bring Fully Charged Live back far easier to remember than EE which I get wrong every single time so have given up and just say FCL sorry to your marketing team who think they've won with the new branding.
And yet the fossil fools have been spreading around stories that "nobody" wants an EV anymore. Pure petrolganda! As for Tesla, I agree with your take completely, which is why I got rid of my Model 3 and now drive an Ioniq 5. I would like to hear your assessment of what the hell Tesla is doing by firing their Supercharger director and team. I've seen stupid decision by automakers, but THAT one takes the cake.
Rocket Man sees the future in his Cybercabs. No-one will need to own a car, as it will be just as cheap to travel in one of these. They will probably use hybrids, as a 99% duty cycle will be more profitable than the 70% of a BEV. Hence no need for charging stations. If it works he will make trillions.
Samsung already dabbled in making cars back in 1995. Unfortunately, it was a failure and the remains was sold off to Renault. Considering the bad experience, I don't see Samsung ever touching automotive again. Though the other major Korean electronics brand, LG is a major automotive supplier today, supplying the batteries, infotainment and electronic motors for the Chevy Bolt EV, they haven't planned on launching a car under the LG brand yet. This detailed video goes into the topic really well. "When Samsung Launched A Car Company" ruclips.net/video/u532ss_gojI/видео.html
Anyone who listens to podcasts can access RUclips videos and I don't know many blind people who drive. Why this was uploaded to RUclips without pictures nor video of the vehicles talked about is the answer to the question; "Why isn't this video more popular?"
Since having my tesla, I've never wanted buttons back! Voice commmands work great and the steering wheel controls are customizable. I love it, but I'm no as old as you are Robert😂
I am a full on EV fan, my car is an EV, my wifes should be , but she wanted a backup so we have a little 600cc range extender in her car but its still driven as an EV 95% of the time............ however until we get an affordable way for people without off street parking to be able to conveniently charge, then hybrids are still going to be an important part of the transition. I agree at this point they should not be needed. But in a UK where public charging can cost upwards of 80p a kwh and you can live miles from public charge points sadly they are. I will never buy another ICE car again, but then I CAN charge at home
Another great chat with Elliot and Bobby Llew. BTW if anyone scans these comments, let RL know he can get bluetooth/wifi physical buttons for the Tesla. 'S3XY Buttons An Even Faster Way to Control Your Tesla'
What I would like to see is an ifixit teardown/repair index for each model of EV similar to phones. From youtube videos the BYD blade battery is a real pain, impossible to repair, while CATL batteries appear to be in prismatic blocks much easier to teardown and replace damaged cells.
people complain about Chinese EV‘s taking over the world but the fact is that there are a lot of European people providing the expertise to these companies so and without their input it’s quite likely that the industry would not be what it is today
Excuse me, but where exactly was the "low down" on the Beijing Motor Show? That title was very misleading as it was just follically challenged blokes wittering on. No low down to be found nor even photos from the motor show.
Maybe the CEOs from the various Chinese EV car companies are so cordial with each other because they don't really compete with each other - they are all subsidized and it benefits them to be cooperative with each other. America should perhaps adopt this model too in order to be competitive with the Chinese government which would obviously do a lot to bring EV prices down for the average American driver.
You are starting to see the picture. This is not company vs company but country vs country. The country willing to provide the most direct support to it's automakers will win. Eventually China will be charging what they want because they are the only player left.
It's just courtesy talking in the most typical East Asian way. The big tent of nationalism unites them only on paper, but under the table the competition is cutthroat. Remember how legacy auto makers have to form joint ventures in China? People complain on that a lot, but do note that the other half of the JV are almost always state-owned cooperations. Which means these big SoE have been sharing risk - and recently, the impact of declining sales with the western brands since day 1. The EV transition has already bankrupted a SoE, that is Brilliance, BMW's local partner. BMW in turn wasted no time to increase its stake in the JV from 50:50 to 75:25. The Chinese picture is complicated. It's easy to shine a simplistic light and just view it as a monolith. But what a grave mistake that would be.
It's because the real competition is ICE vehicles, not fellow ev makers. That's why byd CEO speaks so well of Tesla. Once the world is 100% electric they will probably be more competitive with each other. But for now the camaraderie is real.
Tesla will bring out fsd, skateboard with steer by wire which it may supply to other manufacturers. Robotaxi etc maybe Tesla model 2. Replace supercharger with next generation electric supply to reach everyone including apartment dwellers
I feel the same way about hybrids. I want to accept them as an ally, but it feels like it is missing the mark. I don't think they could make a battery big enough and small enough ICE engine to make the math work out for it. Just go with full BEV!
But the maths does work out. The cost of the smaller ICE and the much smaller battery works out cheaper than either a BEV or an ICEV and gives the best features of both. That's why hybrid sales are increasing faster than either.
I own a Mitsubishi Outlander PHV. Outstanding vehicle for my needs, do a lot of towing so a pure EV would be useless. Car charging points do not allow for towing vehicles, and do not fancy unhitching just to be able to get to a charging point. Love EV’s but they are not the 100% ansewer
Last year there were rumors (or complaints?) claiming that hybrids were hogging charging stations and should be disqualified from the green plate, but for now nothing has changed. Like the North American and European markets, the sales trend for hybrids is very positive, and there is less conflict with BEVs, and more of a takeover of ICEs. According to the government's plan, ICEs will be replaced by hybrids, BEVs and hydrogen vehicles together in 2035. When the situation is in line with the plan, I don't think the government will intervene prematurely in the development of hybrid cars.
EVs don't get flats. You must need a software update.

Very happy to see fewer gimmicks. I don’t need multiple screens or headlights making silly pictures, I need affordability
From the report, the Japanese have *not* shown they know how to build an EV for China, they have shown they know how to *badge* a Chinese EV for sale under their brand.
Very informative guys. Hoping some more of these Chinese models make it Down under.

You might care to Google Image the car holding areas around our ports.
I would be interested in Elliots storey of living and working in China.
he has his own yt channel from china ;p
It immediately reduces range anxiety so, if you had to commute to your work in the city, You can drive there on the ice engine and if entering a ULEZ zone for example could easily switch over to battery where pollution is usually highest then switch back when leaving the zone
Yes I know it doesn't fully cure WORLD pollution but it would help a lot.
@@tivvy-xf4kz I regularly commute between the Scottish Borders and Argyle and occasionally Borders to Manchester with no range anxiety.

Great stuff - we just don't get the Chinese perspective on the motor industry and electrification anywhere else. Keep up the good work guys!

Love your show Robert. Great stuff.
A really good episode. It’s great to be getting the heads up on what’s happening in China from Elliot. I always said if the Chinese get a foot hold in Europe the European car industry will really struggle to survive. You’ve only got to look at the Japanese car makers in the 70s they killed British leyland as it was then
British Leyland couldn't compete in the "what customers wanted" department.
Sort of a dinosaur thing.

Good to know.
Xiaomi is designed by Chris Bangle ex-BMW chief designer

Elliott is one of the most insightful EV journalists - thanks! Your take on Telsa was spot on.
Is that Elon's mum talking? 😂😂😂
Hybrids are fine as long as they are plug in and people actually charge them.

Toyota don't want to build EV's cos they don't brake as much as ICE cars
That is more true than most people think, a huge part of the profit of legacy car makers, is on the after sale support/parts sales and ICE cars have a huge amount of parts that can break on the motor alone.

Surely this is a step forward?
" Just press the steering wheel button", if you can find it! & it rolls as well as presses!
In other words the CT is a technology demonstrator.
The future for legacy makers looks like collaboration with Chinese companies or producing cars in China for the export market, a bit like Tesla do at the moment.
what, no pictures?
Subscriber from virtually day 1....
Gone
Bye.
Couldn't take Tesla being criticised? Or was it the bigging up of China?
Xiaomi and Huawei both began to make BEVs. Who is next? Samsung?
Quite possibly.
Although if you hit a data dead patch the voice commands won't work, which was disappointing that it doesn't run locally on the car
I control my heater/aircon with the Rh steering wheel scroll wheel. Model S 2016.
Another great chat with Elliot and Bobby Llew.
BTW if anyone scans these comments, let RL know he can get bluetooth/wifi physical buttons for the Tesla. 'S3XY Buttons
An Even Faster Way to Control Your Tesla'
No no no. Just say temperature 19 For example… really easy!
Hmm ... and drive general taxes up ...
Where do suppose the cash comes from so that US government can offer subsidies?
@@t1n4444 Tax receipts of course.
Tesla will bring out fsd, skateboard with steer by wire which it may supply to other manufacturers. Robotaxi etc maybe Tesla model 2. Replace supercharger with next generation electric supply to reach everyone including apartment dwellers
Any car that can mount the cameras in about the same locations as Tesla can use FSD. They don't need to sell the skateboard. But I wish they would.
22 hectares or 54 acres or the size of a large Lincolnshire field.
Xiaomi's SU7 is 11 inches (30cmish) longer than the Model 3. Sportier, especially the seating. Not much height in the back for Jack.
I see it like this, those who wanted an ev got them. on thhe other hasnd, those that didint want an ev still DONT want an ev!
really tard comment i see
TORONTO '25!!!
Screw buttons, do the Fully Charged team get issued with a Blackberry?
So what's happening with Hybrid cars in China? Can they keep their free green Number plates? Are they issued yearly or for life?
Last year there were rumors (or complaints?) claiming that hybrids were hogging charging stations and should be disqualified from the green plate, but for now nothing has changed.
Like the North American and European markets, the sales trend for hybrids is very positive, and there is less conflict with BEVs, and more of a takeover of ICEs. According to the government's plan, ICEs will be replaced by hybrids, BEVs and hydrogen vehicles together in 2035. When the situation is in line with the plan, I don't think the government will intervene prematurely in the development of hybrid cars.
i guess bmw is trying to lobby for green h2O as fuel replacement. as far as i know the talk about that dosent want to die down in germany
How do you create Green Hydrogen Fuel economically ? What’s Green H2O ? Water ? That’s green anyway …
@@chrisbraid2907 Yep it dosent work. But somehow parts of the existing industry are embracing it. Even so i think it is not economically viable.
