Another great review! Could you do a review of the TS3s? Been interested in these for a while. Seem like the best middle of the road club that would be best suited for most golfers
Gabe: I had used the STi series of forgiving irons for several years. I tried a 7i TS3 two months ago ... wow!!! You will pry these out of my cold, dead hands. You can move the ball easily, it feels wonderful when hitting the sweet spot, and still forgiving. I have the Kuro Kage A-flex shafts and GP tour velvet 360 mid-size. Love the clubs!
Maltby is the most underrated brand in golf
Thanks Stu and Gabe. Big fan of Maltby clubs here, I've had my TS1 irons in the bags for about 4 years now. Replacements have come and gone but I go back to the TS1 every time. They are getting a bit worn now so I'm debating between going with a fresh set or a TS3/TS4 blended set.
Gotta go fresh set. TS1’s are incredible and they are on a nice sale right now for the heads. Easy swap and you’re good for four more years.
Yesssss! Thanks for bringing another Maltby set
Gotta thank Stu for letting me borrow 🙏
I'm getting back into club building and i recently received my Golfworks catalog in the mail. I have to say the new stuff from Maltby looks top shelf. Some of their designs from the past were a little gimmicky and turned me off to the brand entirely. I honestly can't decide whether to go with the TS1, TS3, or TS1-IMs. They all look great. I can't wait to try them. Wondering how the TS1 stacks up against the TS1-IM. Hard to believe that they both rate so high on the playability scale. I've been away from the game for health reasons and now I'm retired from the military so i concentrate more on my golf game. I once played to a 8hdcp. Probably around a 15 now if im honest. So I sure could use all the forgiveness I can get in a players iron. I can't play GI irons. I just can't score with them and they aren't as fun to play the game with. This season is looking good with these in the bag.
Gabe did a great and very honest review of my clubs. Just for reference in case anybody's curious, the TS4 is actually fractionally shorter than the TS1-IM. The face height is slightly taller but the offset is identical. Topline of the TS4 is also noticeably thinner. These specs are per the Maltby website. Interestingly enough, the MPF is higher with rhe TS4's which per Maltby means they're just slightly easier to play.
Thanks Stu 🙏 is their MPF rating by club category or is it standard for all clubs?
@LetsPlayThru it's just a standard set of measurements that they take on each club and they assign a "playability" number according to things like MOI, CG, and other factors. The higher the #, supposedly the more friendly it is to play. It's a system created by Ralph Maltby quite a few years ago. It's not just Maltby clubs either. Each year they update their catalog with about every club on the market.
Just look up "MPF chart". (Maltby Playability Factor). This is the whole basis of how they design their clubs. Their objective is to make the easiest clubs to play in the market for their respective categories AND while keeping them visually appealing.
Also unlike other companies, Maltby posts very detailed specs on each model. Like specs that a club builder would want to know. They really are the golf enthusiasts DTC for these reasons.
I have a set of these irons and they will stay in my bag for the rest of the year at least. They are surprisingly forgiving, including the longer clubs. I have never hit a 4 iron so well. The feeling at impact is so nice. The lofts are not strong (7 iron : 33 degrees) but the distance is OK for that kind of irons. Highly recommended !
If you had to rate the overall game improvement in TS4, Ts1-IM and Takomo in order what would that look like?
Thanks Gabe!! So glad you reviewed these. They’ve been in my bag about a month now and they are the most forgiving blade I’ve ever played. They look even better in person and personally I love the feel!! To me they feel softer than the Srixons ZX7. You can’t beat them for the price!!! It’s ridiculous!!! Awesome review as usual!! ❤❤❤
My whole bag is Maltby. TE forged, 4 through PW. wedges DBM 52 and 56. 3 hybrid KE4 and 3 wood. Awesome set
I play TE's too (a half set--6,8,PW,GW since I carry my clubs a lot)... I'm hoping he does a TE+ review next as I'm considering those.
STi2 Driver w Aldila Tour shaft 13, 3W, 4h, 5--G irons. Acer D-Grind wedges, Maltby putter. BStone Precept Laddie ball. 5.3 hcp
whats your HCP if you dont mind me asking?
I just completed my full Maltby bag!
TC Pro driver, TC Pro 3 and 7 wood, TS3 P-4i, Max Milled 54° and 58°, and PTM4 + PTM5 putters. All with Maltby MPF shafts. It's honestly the best bag I've ever played!
Thank you for another great video. I’m tossing back and forth building me another set of irons from Maltby. I went to the club making school they have back 8n the late 90’s. I’m a mid handicap golfer 80’ to 100 depending on the day. Had some medical issues, but building back on all that. I love the reviews especially on the Maltby clubs. If you shot between 80:to 100, which Maltby irons would use choose?
Go for a TS4 / TE+ blended set. TS4 / TS3 have different finishes, but the TS4 and TE+ match. TE+ may as well be a TS3, lofts are the same and run around the same MPF. Only difference is offset numbers, where the TE+ is constant and the TS3 is progressive.
Forging in and of itself is does not guarantee soft feel. Historically forged clubs have been design with a shorter heel to toe dimension and have had more weight concentrated behind the hitting area. When you hit them properly this contributes tremendously to the feel we think f when we think of forged clubs. As a club gets a longer heel to toe dimension and less weight behind the ball at impact the feel can be negatively affected. And when you add another type of metal into the forging that can disrupt harmonics, again, affecting feel. I have played older cast clubs that had the same dimensions and weighting as forged clubs and no one could tell the difference no matter how skilled a player they were. Shaft selection can also affect feel. A stiffer shaft especially with a stiff mid point and tip oten makes the overall club feel more firm. So there's a lot that goes into it besides forging alone. If forging were all that was needed than every cavity back club with a forged face would feel like a quality blade but we know they don't. But people associate cast clubs with large perimeter weighted and forgiving designs so that's what manufacturers build. Make a cast head the same size and with the same weighting as a Mizuno MP and few would ever know the difference. Maltby favors forgiveness above all even in their players offering thus the longer heel to toe dimensions and co forged tungsten. You see the benefits of this tech but you also see the tradeoffs. You have to decide what is most important to you.
I’ve been waiting for this video since Stu mentioned on golf wrx that he sent you his set to make a video. After this video I’m gonna make a choice between the ts4, ts3, TE+ or TE forged. Can you review the TE+?
Just to help you out, I bought a combo set 4, 5, 6 are TE+ and 7 through gap are ts4. The TE+ doesn't look as good as the ts4 but it's just as slick, thinned than a Titleist t150, but they are incredibly easy to hit I'm very very happy with my purchase
Yes GIR. Do you/ would you prefer the Maltby's over Takomo?
Great question
The takomos are less forgiving than Maltbys. Maltby is designed to be forgiving first then they find a way to make it look good in the bag.
@@evansnyder5948 perfectly put!
Great video. I’m interested in the TS3’s. Still forged but are even more forgiving than the TS4.
I'm interested too. I have the TS1-IM's but my buddy is getting his TS3's delivered on Wednesday so I'll try em out
@@SteveInUpperMI Let me know how he likes them.
@@SteveInUpperMIwould love to know what you think!
@@yongminkim6544 I like them both. I only hit my buddies TS3's a couple of times on the course the other day. They seemed awesome and maybe better than my TS1-IM's...but pretty close
I have TS-3s. Best iron I have ever had and I’ve been playing 60 years
Great video, Maltby really does have some great offerings at mere mortal pricing. I wish you'd give the TS3's a shot here.
Maltby Gang rise up
Everyone that I ever play with always takes a look at my TS1ms and I have a conversation about them once I tell them I payed sub $700 for the full set. They asked to play with them and I can see the doubt in their head about their own clubs !
Let’s gooooo
Gang gang baby
Maltby customer here. I've used the KE4 tours for years, and now I'm trying to decide on my next set. Considering everything Maltby makes as long as they're forgiving.
@@4g63mark ts1im
I have the TS1 originals and man when I strike them well they feel amazing and go long! My 7 goes about 175 got them for a good deal on eBay I want to get the IMs but I feel the difference would be minimal I figure I’ll be playing these for the next few years and will upgrade to another maltby set in the future
I think the Maltby TS-1 are great looking clubs, would like to see you demo a set of TS-3 please! I would like to try a set, but here in
Nova Scotia, Canada I think I would have a hard time finding a set to demo! I would like to return to a more traditional club instead
of clubs with rediculous lofts, and then brag that you hit the 7I 200 yds & it being 28degres loft. Thanks fore the great video!!
I have these in the bag from gap to 8 iron. They do launch very high for me, and i do lack some distance with these. On the feel side, the maltby te forged is a buttery soft club.
Happy to see more reviews of Maltby irons. I’ve been eyeing the TS1s, especially at their current price. Would love to see a review of the original TS1 irons or even a comparison review vs the TS1 IM
I'd really love to see you do their TE+ irons next... I play the old iteration and am really close to buying my next set of irons, and need to see an honest review of them. I'm leaning between those and the Haywood CB's...
Heck yes! Always love a Maltby review! TS3 next!
Thinking about pulling the trigger on a blended set. 5-8 TS1-IM 9-GW TS4. Thoughts?
Pretty good golf using a borrowed set of musclebacks! Maltby TE+ are on my radar, I just like the classic players cavity back irons. Just saw three new MacGregor irons in a email today...very sharp looking!
Well done! Have a Maltby chipper and a utility iron in Senior flex. They were the only place I could the iron built the shaft flex I needed. Good stuff
I've never been able to buy clubs. That sounds ridiculous, but it's true. I really want to get a set of these clubs. That's my goal by spring of next year.
Gabe, very interested in either Maltby’s or Takomo’s. In the case of the Maltby’s (TS4) is ordering done thru GolfWorks?
Yes Golfworks is the only place in the US they are sold.
I agree with a couple of the comments. If you still have the ts1-IMs can you do a back to back?
What did you think of the wedges in particular? Im looking for a sand, gap and pitching wedge to supplement my callaway edge set, but most wedges are like $120+ per club... been looking for the kirkland wedges but no luck, so these could be an option for me
For specialty wedges, I highly recommend their Max Milled. They are like $60 each. Full face grooves with micro milling. They have a nice shape and come in wide sole and regular sole options. Bonkers spin! I recently switched to them from TaylorMade MG3 TW grind and couldn't be happier. They're so easy to play and look and feel great. A little thicker profile but nothing offensive at all. They also have the TSW which is a more player's profile for around $50 and extremely versatile if you're a good wedge player. IMO either option wipes the floor with Kirkland's and are very available.
Would you take these or the ts1 im's??
Just ordered a TS4 7i with specific components but I'm not too sure on the shaft I chose, but nonetheless, I am excited and stoked to try them out! I'll be trying out my dad's TS3s I got him for father's day too
Congrats!
What shaft options did you with? How'd you like the 7i and your dad's ts3's? What 7i do you currently play, and what distance and clubhead speed?
@matthew8031 I haven't gotten the 7i yet unfortunately do to some weird error on Golfwork's end. I tried out my dad's TS3s which felt nice and buttery smooth. Softer feel to them as well.
@matthew8031 Currently, I play some old Callaway X2 Hots. For clubhead speed, I swing around 85 to 90 mph. Distance with a 7i I'm not 100% sure, but with my 6i, I carry around 170 to 180 yards with total distance is around 190 to 200
@matthew8031 Oh and I forgot to mention the shaft. I went with a $-taper. If you're curious how it feels when I get it in a couple weeks, I can let you know.
Will you compare these side by side with the TS1 IMs? Seem like the 2 most popular choices on the Maltby website, but it's hard to really understand the difference between them, or why to choose one over the other.
Unfortunately Gabe has sent both sets back and isn't able to do a side by side.
Being that these both were my sets of clubs, I can tell you that profiles are pretty similar. Offset is identical. Sole and top line width are fractionally wider in the Ts1-IM. Feel from both are exceptional for their respective categories. Ultimately it boils down to each person's preferences. Having a chance to play both extensively, I preferred the feel and edge in performance of the TS4's. I've since sold the IM's. I personally prefer a solid head over a hollow. It's a more old school pure feeling that I really appreciate. Again, that's my subjective opinion so it just depends on what floats your boat.
Hopefully that was helpful
Thanks for the feedback Stu
I have the KE4 Max. Love those Irons :)
Newer golfer here what maltbys are beat for beginners/ high hcp?
Prob KE4 Max
Could you please start telling us the swing weight/ weight? Some clubs are much heavier and I’m not a huge fan of “heavy” irons. It’s rarely talked about though, but super important!!! 👍💯
So I built these clubs. If you go to Golfworks, they have lofts, lies, head weights, offset, and bounce listed for each clib. Also they show other stats like material (in this case 1025c), MOI, CG, and even stuff like bore depth and bottom of bore to ground.
These clubs were built with the GW +1/2" over their standard, and in 3/8" increments. GW swing weight starts at D5 and then runs 1/2 SW point per club with the 5i ending at D2. If you have GW build the set, depending on what shafts you pick, your probably looking at D2 in the long irons up to D4 in the shorter irons.
Hopefully that helps some.
I built this set with the GW starting at D5 and 1/2 swing weight point
What would you say is better for the money, these clubs or the Takomo 101 irons?
Gabe, do you think the shafts that were in the clubs had any effect on the play too? Definitely a mishit the ball is still going straight is a reflection of the club head. I’m just wondering the trajectory and some of the control of the flight was more on the shaft.
Absolutely. They flew a bit too high for me so I needed to club up more. Also some early pulls caused me to make some adjustments on the fly.
To Gabe's absolute credit and showing his ability to adjust on the go, I built these 1/2" over standard and +3° upright. I'm 6' 3" so these are definitely built for me and my swing. That might explain some of the pulled shots.
Also, I was just about to switch shafts before sending these. After 9 months of play, I just didn't love the height. I was going to switch to a set of Royal precision Rifle Flighted in 6.5 frequency which are a lower launching shaft. We decided that because of the obscurity of the RP's, it was best to keep a shaft that's easily accessible. I've since put the RP's in a set of TS3's and am really loving the setup.
I like the TS1IM better for me. I think where Maltby REALLY shines however is with the Max Milled wedges....best I've ever used.
Do you have the 60 degree? Worried about the wider sole and not being able to open up and hit a soft flop.
@@joewalker6931 No, just the 56 sand wedge.
Got these clubs this winter. Love them.
I bought thes irons just a month ago and I can't believe how forgiving they are. Just amazing!!
HI there. On your videos, when you are on the tee box and you hit a drive........you then walk up to the ball where you hit it and you put your phone down beside it and it gives you how long the drive was. Can you tell me what app you use for that?
It’s a Garmin G80
@@LetsPlayThru DO you know if it works with the Garmin S42 also?
Thanks Stu and Gabriel
Does Golf Works normally take a long time to get clubs delivered? Ordered a wedge and I’m going on 2 weeks.
So prior to their recent popularity spike, they would normally have clubs built within two to three days and shipped immediately. More recently anything that requires a build is looking at about a 2-week turnaround time to get built and shipped but that's not including transit time. Hopefully they'll be able to get that window back down to what it used to be. On the other hand if anybody can do their own build and order the components separately, they usually ship out the same day but I know that's not most people.

Gabe, buddy, you lost some weight brotha. Good for you!!
Gabe whats your opinion these irons or Wilson Dynapower forged ? cheers buddy
Dynapower def going to be significantly longer but also much less spin. While these are EXTREMELY forgiving for blades, those are even more forgiving for those that need it. These will have a bit more control.
@@LetsPlayThru thx for the response will probably go the dynapower forged next year cheers
I'm stuck between these and the takomos 101. Any advice?
How would you compare these to the new Wilson DynaPower Forged irons. Are the Malibu more like the Taylormade 780s.
My friend plays the P770's. I put these next to his and they're very similar in all dimensions. IMHO these feel much better than the P770's. He even has Steelfibers shafts and these still feel way better. That's me though.

How about picking a shaft you like? GolfWorks will build you a custom set of how ever many irons you want. They offer many different shafts, and will build to your specs for free.
Think about KBS in steel or graphite. I play the KBS Max graphite iron in 85 gram.
What do you usually play? The stock True Temper Score LT's are really a great basic option for a lot of folks. Not perfect by any means but they definitely would work well for a 2nd set
Thanks for the video!!! Forgiveness and blades usually DO NOT go hand and hand!! lol. I do like that you give some love to the DTC brands. I can see myself getting Takomos when I have the opportunity to get a new set of irons. Although, I would rock the Kirkland driver and irons, wedges and putter with pride if I could get my hands on them. I heard a KS2 should be coming out.
TS4 = So good.
I wonder how these Maltby irons would work for a +20 handicap.
Probably not these. TS3's.. maybe. KE4 MAX, most definitely.
Whoever said those feels better than Miura’s definitely never had or hit any Miura’s!
Would you say these or takomo 101s are better
Hey Gabe, one thing. Those are not your personal clubs. Imagine that you are used to them and have them shafted and gripped to your specifications. I play the the TS1 IM from Maltby I personally built them using KBS Max graphite iron shafts and Jumbo Max medium size grips lengthened 1 inch. I’m 6’5” tall. I’ve been playing almost 60 years and a better feeling iron I seriously can’t imagine. If it’s true that there are well O.M.G. I got rid of my 1,500.00$ Titleist irons for these. Never giving these up.
The one TS1-I’m I got an aftermarket shaft on feels great
Yep here too. Same irons completely built custom for me. Incredible irons
Not seeing that price for a full set or irons. Maybe I’m missing something.
It is tricky to find. You have to go to the Club paks section on their website.
Yes, found it! Thank you
Wait. Did you do a review of Hogan irons that I’ve missed?
That vid drops next Thursday
It appears that not one of there clubs - drivers, irons, wedges, putters - are available lefty. Major fail. What a shame.
Only right hand though
How do these compare to ts1 im
I had both and personally I preferred these over the IM's.. BUT it's 100% personal preference and you're going to find evenly mixed opinions on 1 vs the other. IMO that's a good thing because they both meet the expectations of whoever prefers either type. I believe Gabe likes the IM's better.. but then there's the TS3 video that he just released and he likes those the best. I prefer the feel of a solid forged blade over the hollow foam filled. I think the TS4's perform marginally better with more spin to hold greens. The hollow heads for me seem to be a little spin-deficient.
All that said, I recently moved from the TS4's to the TS3's (before Gabe's other video). Maltby just has so many great options to choose from for all levels of play.
@@AZstu324what made you move to the ts3? Do you prefer them over these. My only concern is the massive cavity on the ts3. Looks kinda off to me especially in the long irons
@@TMH_Golf so my only reason for the switch was that while the TS4's are extremely forgiving for a bladed profile, the TS3's are ultra forgiving. I'm looking to get my handicap into the lower single digits this year and am really counting on these to play a big part.
TBH the cavity isn't nearly as pronounced in person. I built a set of these for my Dad a while back and actually liked the profile even though it was a little thicker. Coming from the TS4's I don't dislike the profile at all. A bonus is that these slightly edge out the TS4's in the feel department and play every bit as good.
@@AZstu324 thanks for the quick reply. I have been debating between the ts3 and ts4 for a while. I recently swapped my callaway maveriks for a set of hollow body forged blade/mb style irons, but I prefer the feel of a fully forged iron. I have been striking these mb’s pretty well which is what made me think the ts4’s might work for me, but the more rational side knows I will probably shoot lower with the ts3’s. The ts4’s are just so damn sexy though!!
@@TMH_Golf ha ha that was my exact dilemma. I loved EVERYTHING about the TS4's.. but I had to put a part of my ego away, knowing that while I want to improve my game, I'm not able to play or practice any more than normal. So far I'm really happy with the switch and have noticed a few more GIR's per round.

" Tree Trouble" ....that's a thing now, isn't it? lol
Where is the video on Ben hogan?
Just get blades and become a way better golfer than your friends a few months slower than they were able to become mediocre.
Not a bad idea. I did the same when I was young.
There is NO advantage to playing blades, or any clubs lacking perimeter weighting. (Not that this video makes that claim. Just sayin'.)
A common misconception is that blades are more "workable." Nothing could be further from the truth. The idea comes from the fact that a mishit with a blade is (a) more likely and (b) that mishit is more likely to curve. But fades and draws (workability) are not accomplished with mishits. They're done by having a difference between the swing plane and the face angle of the club. Thus, you can fade or draw a ball no matter what the perimeter weighting looks like.
Now, you might like blades because they're more likely to have less offset, or because they have smaller soles, or because they're shorter from heel to toe, or because they're forged. But you can find perimeter-weighted clubs with those features. (I know, I play a set with the first three of those.)
This was an excellent review.
Trust me, Maltby isn't a 1 trick pony like the rest of these newer DTC companies. They've been around for over 30 years. Take a look at their catalog and their "MPF" and I'm sure you'll find something you like. Even these , while they look like blades, their CG and MOI placement by design are more similar to some GI clubs. Their head designer Britt would completely agree with you about moving the ball and delivery. Everything they make, they factor playability first, then aesthetics. It's a Maltby Hallmark.
@@AZstu324 Not sure why this is a reply to my post. I said nothing about Maltby or any other club. And I reiterate: there is NO reason to play blades.
@@richdouglas2311 just inviting you to check them out. I figured you might appreciate their concept. That's all. IMO, I think people should be entitled to play whatever they want if it suits their eye and game. I personally find value in playing this type of club if your game is at the level.. But that's just my opinion and who am I to say?
There is an advantage to play non perimeter weighted irons if you launch the ball high. You can tweak shafts, but perimeter weighting will always launch higher than non.
