The TRASH Jet…United’s Awful CRJ-200

- Back in October of 2021, there happened to be a third new US airline starting up operations on the west coast with the aim of connecting secondary cities together point to point. That lasted not even a year, but this video was the flight to get to Reno for the inaugural. It just so happened to be aboard Untied's smallest jet in their fleet and by far the worst airplane they fly...the CRJ-200. I'll let the video speak for itself. This was not a very good experience and it had nothing to do with crew. The plane is just awful. Hope you guys enjoy!

I mean, let's be honest... It doesn't have to be wearing the United livery to be awful. It doesn't matter what livery it wears... All CRJ-200 are awful for passengers haha 🤣 Now, I've heard many pilots say they love flying the CRJ-200's, but flying them from up front vs flying them in seat 12A are very different haha. Great video as always my friend!
Yah they all suck ahaha this just so happened to be UA :D Hope you're well mate & happy holidays!
Merry Christmas my friend! Maybe we’ll bump into each other again next year.
especially if many of them will go to American Eagle
United is many leagues above AA and Southwest. Below DL for sure, but I'd take a UA CRJ across the country over any WN flight because at least you have a chance at getting off the ground.
@@parkerjon29 actually, all CRJs are technically not UA planes, and they are technically not Delta planes (with the exception of Endeavor Air planes) or AA planes (with the exception of PSA planes, Envoy planes, and Piedmont planes). Rather, they are either Skywest planes, Air Wisconsin planes, Mesa planes, etc.
Only defense I have of the CRJ-200 is they help serve smaller markets that cannot support a larger regional jet. Eg: Chicago-Erie PA.
Denver Air Connection which is a subsidiary of Key Lime Air have been serving smaller markets across the USA, using the funny looking Dornier 328 Jet and the Embraer 145.
Also Houston to Harrisburg,PA
That is a four hours non stop flight
Almost every commercial airport with airline service in Wyoming (aside from Jackson Hole) has the CRJ-200 as their only option.
They could use Cr9's or even the E-jet series, tbh. ERI can land those. The 200 crj was novel when it started but there have been so many improvements since then that it's becoming antiquated.
They aren’t that bad! You’re young. You have no clue what a “small plane” really is! CRJ is a big upgrade compared to a 19 seater turbo prop
I flew one of these for the first time last summer from South Bend Indiana to O'Hare. It was defintiely one of the most cramped experiences on a jet I've ever been on. As a 6' 2" person, I picked an aise seat which helped as i wasnt constrained by the curvature of the plane but still would avoid unless I have to. Thankfully the flight is only a 25 minute ride from south bend to o'hare so it was bearable but any longer would have me questioning my life choices lol
I’ve flown that route WAY too many times lol.
We have it from here in Fort Wayne too and I’ve always questioned why there’s over 5 flights a day from sbn/fwa to Ohare lol. Only a 4 hour drive and a 10th of the price.
I'm getting ready to do that exact route and it'll be on this exact plane. I'm dreading it. I'm 6'3 370lbs and I booked business class for the rest of my flight (and even that is going to be marginal) but united doesn't have anything else serving SBN anymore. I'd say there's a 50/50 chance I'll be running into the "hey fat ass, buy another seat"
5:25 - I worked the 200 for 2 years. They don’t have very good air conditioning system. They were absolute hell in the summertime. Very very rarely will you get one with decent air
That’s funny I was just on a cj200 today and the apu was broke so the air conditioning did not work I was drenched in sweat by the time we were ready for takeoff
I rode on BART on a regular basis to college, and I was at SFO several months ago; so this video definitely hits home for me.
Merry Christmas by the way!
My friend, without that jet you won’t be able to get to smaller airports with high terrain so respect it or drive instead!
For me the CRJ-200 is one of those bad experiences I just love to have.
This is the only plane where I love sitting in the back just to hear the loud engines.
Not gonna lie, this video reeks of nostalgia for flying in the 2000s post 9/11, but pre 2010. Right before IFE and WiFi became an individualized thing at each seat.
An era where I literally remember being allowed to play on my Nintendo DS but having to shut it off during takeoff and landing (I can't imagine that happening now). I think that rule got changed about 10 years ago.
I remember flying on quite a few of these CRJ flights, and they were tolerable for a 40-45 minute flight from Columbus to Cinncinatti or Columbus to Detroit.
Im a huge fan of your videos! you have made me realize the passion I have for aviation. Thank you for your videos and I hope you continue to this wonderful content. One day I hope I can fly so frequently as you do and enjoy the experiences. Thanks for what you do and keep it up!
Make sure to avoid united
3:03 Oh! I thought you were gonna dine in, and I was like "Livin' life on the edge, eh?" when you sat down (coz 40 mins before boarding 😅) 😹
Dude, that’s crazy because I literally had the most turbulent flight I’ve ever been on from Las Vegas to Reno on Southwest. Growing up flying in and out of Las Vegas I’m used to hitting turbulence coming into the desert from the heat rising, but the air around Reno must be crucial lol
if you cant handle a 30 min flight you don't belong in a plane grow up gen z!
I've always loved flying on the CRJ
cute comfy little jet.. almost like a private jet
Being short does have some pros afterall
For a quick sec I thought 7:41 the passenger was wearing a Michael Myers mask 😂
I flew a CRJ 200 from Dallas to Santa Fe, New Mexico a few weeks ago in a blizzard. The plane is so claustrophobic; I had severe anxiety and had to beg the person sitting in the aisle to switch seats with me as I was in the cramped rear window seat.
Hi Chris, and Merry Christmas!
I like these newer videos with voiceovers. I miss the old ones though but i've been subbed since 2020!
It’s a puddle jumper 1 hour flight use airplane it’s serves its purpose. And at the end of the day all that matters is that you get there safely
Flying from sfo to Reno goes over the mountains and you get lots of convection currents which cause turbulence.
Ik he was bitching about something that the airline can’t control.
I had a short connecting flight on a CRJ-200 from ORD to MSN and it was one of the longest ones of my life.
The thing I hate most about the CRJ series:
Regular sized 22x14x9 carryon bags won’t fit in the overhead bins
I flew on one from phoenix to Salt Lake City in the first row and the gate agent put the tag on my bag. I asked “Do you have to take it?” He said “Unfortunately it won’t fit in the overhead bins, but you can try” I tried and it didn’t fit.
As I was seated in the bulkhead I had no underseat storage but the flight attendant kept my Nintendo switch in the coat room during takeoff and landing
Next time if I choose United, I will not going to fly the CRJ-200 because it’s crap.
Worst part of the CRJ-200 is that you almost always have to duck your heads when going to your seat, due to the overhead compartment being way too low. It is more like a schoolbus, but the flying variant
Great video. Thanks for posting this. Have a nice day.
Are you a jazz musician? I love both jazz and aviation!
Your videos are delightfully entertaining and informative and made even better by your wonderful sense of humor. Keep up the good work!
Great video presentation, Chris! Keep up the good work!
Skip to 4:00 to avoid pointless blah blah blah.
The reason for united not to force their regional partners to improve the crj200 fleet is probably that they expect the downsides won’t significantly affect the overall experience as they make sure nobody will be riding one for too long.
The CRJ200 is very cheap for Skywest to operate so they can pass the savings on to United
I’d rather drive than suffer in CRJ 200 for eternity
Great video! I hope you’re having a happy holiday season :)
As someone who takes nearly 100 flights a year with united and half of those being on CRJ 200 flights 1.5-2Hr flights. I was thrilled when I heard united was dumping air Wisconsin and the CRJ200s.
They’re not bad for 30 minute flight segments but united was constantly using them for 2hr flights while cutting the use of A318s or ERJ-175s at regional airports to save money.
They did start heading the right direction with the CRJ 550s with having first class.
But I’m on a 2HR flight to Denver in (You guessed it) another CRJ 200.
Merry Christmas! Love your vids. I love to fly but never get to choose what plane to go on. Thanks for all your help!
Hot and bumpy! Just how I like my pizza 🍕!!! As a 14 year past Tahoe resident flying into Reno is always bumpy af. 🙏
People who hate the CRJ-200: 🤡🤢🤮🖕🙄😒👎
People who don’t: 🗿🍷👍😎
Bro, the CRJ sucks
I’m a flight attendant that flies these planes. It’s the only plane we fly that has 1 flight attendant! 😳
I live in Fort Wayne, IN which has a smaller, non-hub airport and I have been on many CRJ-200s before Delta Connections recently upgraded our service with the much nicer CRJ-900s. I don't hate the 200 as much as some people do, but they are undeniably inferior to pretty much any other commercial jet currently operated. The only time I've had a truly comfortable flight on one was when I once sat in the very front row (classified as comfort+ by Delta lol) giving me extra leg room and the seat next to me was unoccupied. The only real defense I can give them, as pointed out by others, is they make smaller municipal airports viable that wouldn't be able to stay open otherwise.
The worst thing about this plane specifically is how it’s operated by the worlds worst airline united 😂
Flew on United CRJ200 October 2021 i didnt think it was that bad. Yes its tiny but i was fine for the short hop between IAD-CMH.
Nice!
The CRJ-200 = The Flying Sardine Can.
The problem is, the CRJ-550 is operated by GoJet. They don't operate out of SFO currently. They only have so many CRJ-550's. SFO-RNO also uses a Skywest E175 and a mainline 737-800 on the evening departure. There are options.
Thanks for the video! Yes they were revolutionary when they first came out and replaced the prop planes seen on most of those routes, but now they’re nearing the end of widespread spread service with with regionals. In their defense, you’ll likely only see them on short flights, like the 35 minutes flight you were on. Most longer flights will see the larger and newer planes.
Happy holidays from Maine bud!
Just flew one, Will NEVER fly this jet again. EVER!
Another outstanding video
Great review of a not-so-great plane. A tip for anyone placing personal items under the seat in front of you. After take-off, pull the item out and place it under your legs. You get your legroom back and still have access to your gear. Key on small planes like the CRJ but great for big planes too.
I flew on the CRJ many times. The boarding and disembarkation are so easy. Quick in and easy out. Never a problem. If you can stand driving in a compact car for 2 hours why complain about the plane?
I used to be a flight attendant on those for 6.5 years. I kind of miss it sometimes
this is the nature of short routes, you are lucky they didn't fly this route using tiny propeller planes like alaska airlines do. at least you were on a jet.
On a 30 minute flight you really need in flight entertainment???
The windows are so far apart lol
Read all of these bad reports on the CJ-200 and was very skeptical about flying on it. Been on 4 flights the last couple months. I was pleasantly surprised considering the bad press. Sat both over the wing and in the back. Just a bus with wings - it get's you there and gets you back. No frills, you get what you paid for - basic air transportation.
Remember these are people making uneducated statements for the likes on RUclips!
I’m set to fly on a United CRJ 200 from Chicago O’hare to South Bend, IN in a few days from now. I also got myself assigned the same seat for the short flight.
The last time I flew SFO to/from Reno was so long ago you had to use the commuter terminal and United Express was a 30-seat turboprop.
Several years ago a couple of irresponsible pilots managed to crash a CRJ200 in Jefferson City after taking it on a joyride during a repositioning flight.
I can't speak for the CRJ-200 necessarily, but the CRJ-700 is one of the nicest airplanes to be a ground crew member for. A large aft cargo compartment you can stand up in, a single galley that you can service without disrupting boarding or deplaning, and they are low enough to the ground you don't even need a lift truck to cater them. I always prefer CRJ's to ERJ's.
9:48 Captain can't even stand up straight in the CRJ, hopefully he got hired by a mainline carrier
The Airbus A220 will be the SMALLEST aircraft I will ever fly on as long as I can help it!!!!
Did you hear American is getting rid of Mesa Airlines and sending their planes to United while American gets United's Air Wisconsin planes
Oh hell no. I liked Mesa airlines but now they go to the worlds worst airline
Wait United is getting crj900’s?
@@uwucaffeineaddiction4023 yup bases will be in Denver and Houston Bush. American will use Envoy and Skywest in Phoenix
@@michaelsharp3615 i saw the article after I commented. Looks to be a temporary thing but I hope its not as its a good idea to use those crj900's as crj700, e170, and maybe even e175 70 seat limited aircraft.
on the intro Loved it that you caught a Ride on BART's Newer Cars on the Yellow Line
It’s not supposed to be nice… These are bare minimum planes, and believe me… as a ramp agent, it sucks to work on too.
Pilot who has time on the jet, I loved this little turd, but definitely different worlds from up front and the back! Side note: no air during push back is because of the engine start, And Scratches are common even on new planes due to air flow over certain parts! not sure if ya know, but safe travels amigo!
The bright side is, the CRJ-200 is literally the only airliner that continuously refreshes cabin air instead of recycling it! Here's how the CRJ-200 does it: ruclips.net/video/Z53BP65un2Y/видео.html
Of course, HEPA filters mean that recycled cabin air isn't a problem, but, still, it's awesome what the CRJ-200 does in this regard 😃
Excellent video!😸
You said that this was the bumpiest flight you have ever been on. Do you blame this on the airline? I don't understand the significance of that comment.
United doesn't use CRJ’s anymore thank God!
At least weather in San Francisco is usually okay but not always with rain when deplaning and boarding airports like Denver for this are the worst which recently expanded their terminal concourses
Evidently you have never flown on a turboprop plane before if you think the CRJ 200 is bad. Yeah, it's a bit on the small side. Its main feature is the speed and also how quiet it is compared to a turboprop. Unless you've flown on one, you have no concept of how bad a flight can be.
Airlines charge premium prices for flights on antiquated, uncomfortable junk.
Being from Boise and somewhat of a UA frequent flier, I’ve had plenty of opportunities to fly the CRJ200… United refused to grow at all in boise until recently, so we were getting like 10 of those a day.
You’ll basically be stuck with RJs at Boise since it’s a crew and mx base for Skywest which owns all those planes.
@@Micg51 you’d think. United is gonna be up to 5 daily mainline this summer, they cut about half of their daily rj flights from there
Looks like something out of the late 80's early 90's
I personally prefer the ERJ 145 over the CRJ 200 mainly because of single seat side
Don’t feel bad about a negative review of the CRJ-200. The entire CRJ line is ass.
I used to fuel them at YYC and they all suck.
If you think it bad flying trying being a wheelchair agent and having to do a aisle chair in one was the worst.
Flew on one of these earlier this week which was my first time flying, and will never fly on one of these again. Too small and was sweating bullets for the 45m flight because I also didn’t have an AC
Great video! I heard the “flight attendant” mention liking your “little camera.” Could I ask which camera you use to film your videos? Just curious :) Thanks!
Scratch that… just saw it in the info :) Thanks!
Love ur videos!!!The last time I flew untied was back in June.I flew from MAF TO IAH then From IAH to EWR
Can't believe they're bringing that hideous RJ200 back! Aside from propjets, it's the most horrible plane in the world. Delta had better not bring that piece of garbage back!
I flew on a Northwest CRJ-200 a few times. Back-killing seats, one attendant for 50 passengers!
Correct. That’s the FAA limit. By regulations, 50 passengers per flight attendant. 14 cfr 91.533
I usually take Sam Trans between SFO and the city because of the surface views and because I'm cheap. My go to food spot at the United hub is Koi Palace - also because I'm cheap! Looks like a single-class cabin; I mean, even those 700s and 175s United Express uses within California at least have a First section. I actually thought all the majors have gotten rid of all single-class regionals! Now I'm intrigued LOL!
- Red
No they plan to get rid of all the skywest crj200’s and commutair e145’s by 2026
The CRJ-200 could be a real pain to dispatch, too! (former skw dx'er)
Well, I guess the could fly an Airbus A380 or a Boeing 777 on a 35 minute flight. That would be economical.
The first time I flew on a CRJ200 was out of Denver on a United Express. It was a hot summer day and there was a lot of turbulence on the climb.
Crj200 is small, I'm a sorta fat, and the tray was up my gut LoL
UA Express had those briefly flying SCK to LAX before the pandemic. As miserable as the CRJ-200 is; it was nice to have an alternative to driving to SMF, SFO or OAK.
WELCOME back CRJ-200s to United
Step 1? Stay out of San Francisco
Step 2? Stay out of Kalifornia
ok you're cute. but if ya don't like it, take the bus? I don't mind them at all; they serve a certain purpose.
The outside of the plane looks all new and stuff while the inside still looks the same
A year later. I fly the CRJ200 for skywest and like the comment below I absolutely love flying the thing. It's a pilots airplane. But, yes the 200 is absolute HELL for passengers. I will be sad and glad once its gone forever. XD
The only thing I cannot excuse on this United Express flight is the hot cabin temperature. What were you expecting on such a short flight? For someone your age who’s never without your phone I can’t believe that you can’t entertain yourself for half an hour. No podcast, shi%@y music or dumb video game to entertain yourself with? That’s 100 percent on you. Learn to need less from others and you’ll be a happier less disappointed dude.
United has some of the worst jets in the US. Their basic international is a joke too.
I can attest to CRJ200s being awful. In my opinion as a pilot, All CRJs, are terrible aircraft. If you need a small plane that seats between 50 and 100 people, the Embraer 135s, 145s, 170s and 175s are much better, and not to mention more spacious. I just flew on multiple CRJ200s operated by United Express and Skywest last week and let’s just say, My 6’3” person did not agree with the aircraft selection. I cannot stand up inside, the legroom is less than optimal and they are unusually bumpy compared to Embraer and smaller Boeing and Airbus aircraft. I just flew on the CRJ200 four separate times in the past few weeks going round trip from Prescott AZ to Tulsa OK with a connection in Denver.
just watching this now - and I don't remember hearing about windows blowing out mid-flight. Maybe the boeing 737 is worse?
Not even us Flight Attendants like flying them. I like the smaller planes because I don't have to play nicely with another flight attendant, which is a nice break once in a while, but the CRJ 200 blows.
You should fly to telluride on Denver Air Connection 328 jet. Also have you thought about flying to Guam and possibly Saipan?
I loved the CJ ride from Chattanooga to Chicago 1 1/2 hour flight was cool. 4 stars for this plane.
If y’all didn’t know CRJ stands for crappy regional jet
I flew on one of those owned by Skywest and it was Delta Connection back in 1999 there plane were brand new back in these days not beat up and chewed up like it is now.
