  • Boating in a storm is an experience. We didn’t think that the rain is going to be a big issue so we stuck to our cruising plans. We are on the Kennet and Avon canal travelling from Reading to Newbury.
    Cruising in torrential rain like this is not for everyone but it felt safe enough, warm enough and it felt like an adventure. After all, a writer and explorer Alfred Wainright used to say- “There's no such thing as bad weather, only unsuitable clothing.”

    Thank you both for sharing your adventures with the world. I currently live in Canada but grew up in Newbury so it's very interesting to watch you cruise around my home town and surrounding area. I'm seriously considering moving back in the not too distant future and becoming part of the narrowboat family. Maybe I'll see you out on the cut one day!

    The rain looked fun. I was thinking of the same quote as it is SO true. It always pops into my head before walking or cycling adventures. I think this autumn will be really colourful this year and I’m looking forward to seeing it in your videos. You are beautiful people, so please avoid the toxic Daily Mail and stay good humans. Cheers, Bill. X

    Marina, Myles, another great Vlog. I love the rain, and to see you guys cruising in such bad weather was very impressive. There is always a special feeling in the air when it Rains. It is said that Paris is better when it rains. Great cruise. Loved the matching weatherproofs, you both looked great. Take care.

    Glad to see you guys moving again, have you managed to discover the root cause of the engine overheating and those air locks? there must be a cause where air is getting in somewhere assuming that all the air in those skin tanks was removed in the first place. Could well be the head gasket failing and the more that engine gets so hot that you cannot touch it, the more stress is put on the head gasket and metal to metal joints. Just wondering what you have done Marina with the engine or planning to do? Please don't assume that regular bleeding of the skin tanks is the solution, there is a problem lurking in that engine somewhere. Keep safe.

    Want to say again. When I see your cruise rpm 2000 plus for only 3 mph you need a higher pitch prop. That will let you go this speed at a lower rev. Save fuel, make less noise. If it was me I would add 2 in of pitch.

    Why don't narrow boats have a drivers cab and a steering wheel indoors? You could still have the tiller down the back for sunny days but also have a steering wheel up front with a nice comfy seat. Does not need to be complicated could be done with a length of rope for the simplest of mechanisms or other more complicated ways.

    Seeing you bail-out your little tender there reminded me of the Ferry at #Wargrave back in the 50's/60's - Where it was moored at 'The St George & Dragon' slipway - It was too shallow to sink, but if we wanted to go over to #Shiplake (Cost - One Penny) we'd have to Bail-Out with these wooden bailers all the way over so that the Ferry-Man could get back again without sinking .... Those were the days :-)

    at one time in earths history, it rained every day for 1 million years.

    That was one heck of a rainfall. It completely filled my 1000ltrs garden water barrels. I'm wondering, why do you pull the center line to get the boat to the bank? When I was helping out at our local cubs group on a boat made available by a charity, the cubs were not strong enough to pull so I taught them to use the center line as a spring line. Make a couple of turns on the bollard, hold it tight and gently power either forwards or reverse to let the boat swing into the bank. Then ease back so the line could be tightened and secured. It also taught cooperation and working together - true cub style. Hope you have dried out by now.

    • @CruisingAlba
      @CruisingAlba  2 года назад

      Thank you for your advice! Our centre line is made for pulling. Will give your technique a go 🙌

    • @orchidhouse297
      @orchidhouse297 2 года назад

      @@CruisingAlba I'd be interested to know if the technique works for you. On our boat the roof rails were open and a line was tied on each side.
