The Lord of the Rings’ Greatest Scene

- The Lord of The Rings Trilogy - The Return of the King in particular - is famous in the fantasy film genre for its epic battle scenes. However, the film succeeds not because of its grandeur - but because of its humanity. In this video essay / review / reaction, I break down how the film's editor and trilogy's producer Jamie Selkirk edits for emotion in a way that deservedly won him the Academy Award for Best Editing.
This is my 5th video and my video style is always changing. Subscribe to join me in my learning process! This video was heavily inspired by videos like the Nerdwriter's Lord Of The Rings: How Music Elevates Story and Helm's Deep: How To Film An Epic Battle. However I wanted to do an even deeper dive on a single scene and hopefully this fits the bill! Let me know if focusing on a specific craft - eg. editing - was helpful at all. I was also inspired in ways by Accented Cinema and I really love his work. Check out his latest video Shang-Chi and the Perpetual Foreigners | Video Essay, or How Tony Leung Acts With His Eyes | Video Essay! I'm really inspired by how he balances the personal and analytical in his videos, often mixing the two and providing analysis that is really unique to him as a creator. I aim to do something similar, increasingly in future videos!

omg I'm so sad this channel is not active anymooooooooooooooore! PLEASE RETURNNNN
yes, sir, i cried.. during this video too. thank you for your analysis, i love it
Please continue your work, your video essays are phenomenal! You break down such emotions and actions so thoroughly and share their effect perfectly. You deserve millions of subscribers.
You’ve helped me through my personal essays as well when I have to break down actions of characters and much more. I hope you have the ability to upload again, i’ll be looking forward to whatever you upload :))
You are very good at these video essays! I really like when you break things down like this, as it gives me a greater appreciation for the skill and artistry at work. Also, it displays your own talents quite well. Impressive!
Thank you!
That was great. Found even more appreciation for a scene I cherish. Thanks for posting.
Who doesn't love this scene 😭
I really hope you return one day, you’ve given me appreciation for films I loved and informatively and clearly display points very well, I watch many video-essay RUclipsrs but to my dim brain sometimes I struggle with understanding some points and/or overarching theme and your videos are just so clear and correct in directors notes and I love them. I’d love to see more.
King, where'd you go? Come back.
As a maori from NZ, I've tried to explain this, in regards to why many people cry when they witness haka, even when they have no idea whats happening
Heyy fellow NZer
I got chills the first time I saw haka
Not just this scene, your analysis gets me tears. Nothing more overwhelming than revealing the greatness of something. This scene and also the blackgate one in ROTK always give me goosebumps, the catharsis as you put it.
Please come back! I just found your content and I’m obsessed
It's been a year
where are you?
Did you stop doing videos? I loved them :(
I just found him today
Love the LotR video - great analysis, and I didn't see it coming at all. Look forward to the next one.
I feel like the music in this scene is severely underrated. It's because of Howard Shore's brilliance that this is my favorite scene in the movie trilogy. Throughout the second and third movie, the audience hears several different forms of the Rohan theme. There's the sad, hopeless variation as Gandalf and the "three hunters" arrive at Edoras. Then there's the triumphant version, as Gandalf releases Théoden from Saruman's magic. These two variations are pretty much what permeates tTT and RotK when focusing on Rohan.
Yet, when it finally comes to the battle of the Pelennor Fields, the two sort of combine. The theme playing is sad and mournful, but also triumphant. The music reflects on Théoden's words at Dunharrow - "No. We cannot [defeat the orcs]. But we will meet them in battle nonetheless." The Rohirrim don't expect to win, but they ride forth nonetheless, to meet glorious death. The theme reflects on that perfectly, and even if the audience isn't specifically listening to the music there (I always am because I fucking love it), it still massively affects the tone of the scene.
P.S. - Théoden is Éowyn's uncle, not father.
Definitely! I gave the music a brief mention but there are a million RUclips videos which break down the music from the trilogy. Absolutely brilliant! And yeah I don't know how I stuffed that up between Eowyn and Theoden, I even had it right in my script! Don't know what went wrong there :)
Your video assays are truly brilliant. Wish I can see more of it and Hope you are doing well in whatever you choose to do now
Well, I started crying when you started to explain the personal catharsis of each and every character... Damn, that was powerful.
Am I the only worried about this excellent film essayist? He all of the sudden disappeared from here, Instagram, and Twitter all at the same time. I am really concerned, hope he's fine, just too busy to make videos.
my heart sinks every time i think about this. it’s so strange, i hope he’s ok.
HOW THE HELL DO YOU NOT HAVE A LEAST A MILLION SUBS???
Wow, this channel blew up quick. Congrats to 40k man. Came here a month ago for the YR content and came back now for another of my all time favourites. Great quality as always. Keep it up
Whoaaa!! 🤩
You took this scene and my understanding of this film to a whole another level dude! Thanks a lot for this great video! 👌🏼✌🏼
I am so glad that you did a video on these films! I find that film analysis channels tend to overlook them and it makes me sad. They are a masterclass in filmmaking. Thank you for a fantastic video, I really look forward to your next one! Congrats on 40k :)
Thanks to the algorithm I finished a few of your works and I swear I’ll come back to your videos.
This might just be my favourite RUclips channel. Your discussion of these films and scenes makes me cry everytime. The works you are making are powerful and deeply thoughtful. Thank you.
I still haven't seen the LOTR trilogy, but this like all your other analyses reminded me of how much passion artists put into every detail of a film or series--that's what makes people fall in love with their work. Thanks for another great review!
Waste no more time and watch that masterpiece right frickin now!
Not me crying like a baby at your explanation at how they make us cry 😭
Hey, you should definitely do a review/analysis of ‘I’m thinking of ending things’
It’s a pretty insane film and took me two watches to understand half of the storyline (if you can even call it that). Anyway I’d love to hear your take on it and see all the subtleties I missed :)
Also great videos, you’ve definitely got a lot of success coming :D
Engaging for the algorithm, you deserve to be seen by more ppl!
just watched all your videos!!
i loved them all
i really hope you start uploading again!
This is one of my favourite scenes in cinema ever. I have the lines memorized to the point I repeat them along with the characters.
I am so happy you made a video analysing the beauty behind it. I never knew why, even when I watched it from the first Rohan horn, I still teared up. Despite not having gone through the emotions of the rest of the film.
P.S, I can't believe you didn't mention the over enthusiastic rider at 7:25.
The first video that I’ve watched from you was the video essay about marriage story. I was blown away by the way you tell your story and saturate me with emotions I didn’t even realise I was feeling. I totally thought you were a well established channel but turns our you’re new! I’m just so amazed at how good you are and how much i love these videos. Good job! I’m looking forward to more!
Same here. I’m here on his channel after marriage story video . I’m gonna watch all videos on his channel

These are incredible! Please keep making your analysis videos. I haven’t watched a video essay quite like yours. I really appreciate the depth you can reach by breaking down one scene. Or even the Call Me By Your Name essay, I don’t think anything else I’ve seen compares.
This is a great video essay. Thanks for your time and effort.
From now on when I see this scene (that yes, makes me cry every time) I'm gonna yell out "I'M HUMAAAAAAAN!!!!!!!!" confusing all but learnèd scholars in the room.
Awesome video and analysis - amazing movie, found out things about video editing magic...every video you've made so far has been top tier, thank you!!!

You're my favourite channel and I fear you always will be, you're so passionate about the reviews and about the movies which I thought no one cared about. But now I feel like there are a lot of people who are actually so involved and passionate about the things that I am passionate about too. You're reviews are the best, my friend. You're doing an amazing job, and the editing is on another level. You're the best. Good much for the future .🤍
Apologies if my English is bad, it's not my first language.
Now I know what I'm watching tonight! Thanks for this analysis, it helps to understand all the subtle cues that create the emotion behine a story.

the host of this video is extremely intelligent and observant. Loved the videos.
Amazing!
pls dont stop making these essays
yo why’d u stop uploading? i rly enjoyed ur vids man
I absolutely loved this video essay
Another excellent analysis. The slight reservation I have is that by only naming Jamie Selkirk as editor, you maybe don’t give enough weight to Peter Jackson’s role in the process. He has always co-edited his own films, even if his name doesn’t appear as such in the credits. Another interesting aspect to this is the degree to which pre-vis was used in LOTR, especially on RotK, not only as a directorial tool but also as a form of pre-edit.
Apart from Theoden being Eowyn’s uncle, you also mention his ‘spear’ when it’s actually his sword, but that’s a bit nit-picky.
I hope you come back soon 😔
excellent video :)
Brilliant!!!!
Just so you know Theoden isn't Eowyn's dad, he's her uncle. I also think the main reason we cry is because of the music !
Found this channel from your marriage story video and now I'm binging them. Kinda crazy cuz I was just looking for new video essay youtubers and the algorithm led me here! Are you studying film or are these things you just picked up on?
You are brilliant
*wipes tear by the end of the video* oooooh *sniffles* so that's why we cry 😢
i really hope you become big one day
👏 🙌
Do you have a Patreon? I’m such a fan of your essays!

Impressive, very based
Can you please do a video on brokeback mountain?🥺
Excellent video! I've really enjoyed your work so far. If you liked Young Royals and are curious about good European films, I'd love to recommend to you (and anyone else) the German film Werk ohne Autor (Never Look Away, Eng.) by Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck, 2018. It's such a good film and it's not talked about enough, by far!
how to make a really great battle scene. and we can see every detail of it, unlike some other battles( cough GOT cough)
post more!!
Hello, would you mind doing a video analysis on “Nostalghia” - Andrei Tarkovsky!! It’s a masterpiece and very interesting to analyze about!!
do euphoria!!!
1:45 Smallest, most hobbit* perspective of them all
