I just made two batches and they both came out beautifully!! NOTE: yes, pouring the oil (I used canola) gradually is IMPORTANT. It will be watery if you don’t. Once you hit a certain point of pouring the oil, the mixture will start to turn solid in an instant. I let about ten seconds pass before pouring about 1/4 cup oil at a time. Also, I used the Silk brand of Soy milk. Anyway, just wanted to say this since the first time I made it, it was watery because I didn’t pour the oil gradually.
Thank you for this tip Angelina. I'll have to use my food processor since I have to twist open my blender. Thanks again!!! I'll try it and see how it comes out.
My son and I made this, and it was FABULOUS! The secrets, as for any mayo, are that the ingredients are all at room temperature and that you add the oil slowly especially in the very beginning. Thank you Olga! You have no idea how excited I've been that I can eat mayo again!
Used homemade almond milk for this recipe and it came out amazing. When I finished pouring the oil in slowly I put the little top on the lid of the blender. Then on high speed for a few seconds and it came out really thick and yummy. Thank you for sharing!
Do you think homemade oat milk would work? I don't have access to other types of milk and I'd like to make some mayo to my dad because he can't have dairy now
I made it today and it came out AMAZING! I'm a mayo lover and now I try to eat vegan - I have to say that your vegan version of my fave dip is even better! Thank you so much Olga ❤
Lydia F Kind of. I can't say that it tastes the same, but it has a nice mayo kick :D. Sour and sweet at the same time, a little different but still suuuuuper good!
Thank you for sharing the video. I tried it for 5 times in one day, finally got the result: First time I tired with extra virgin olive oil, Dijon mustard, it formed nicely but it had a very strong and bitter taste. Second time I tried with pure grapeseed oil and dry mustard, it turned out runny. Third time tried with pure grapeseed oil and dry mustard again, still turned out runny. Fourth time tried with extra virgin olive oil and dry mustard, it formed nicely but still had the very strong and bitter taste. I then searched on the internet about different type of olive oil, and tried with the extra light tasting olive oil (which contained refined olive oil and pure olive oil), it worked nicely. The vegan mayo is white in colour, very good taste and the texture is very similar to the real mayo. Hope this would help those could not get it to work.
Jo Hanna This recipe turned up third in my search results for homemade mayo - I was not looking for a vegan recipe, and I can guarantee that I’m not the only non-vegan here. You’d have more success turning people vegan if you were nicer when educating people about veganism 😉
I'm allergic to soy and have been looking for a vegan mayonnaise recipe for so long. Have you tried this with any other milks? maybe cashew or macadamia milk? Love some suggestions :)
Caitlin Youssef I have. I've made this recipe with almond and coconut milk before and the mayo doesn't thicken unfortunately. I think the protein in soy milk is what makes this recipe work. But you can make vegan mayo using raw cashews instead. Just combine 1 cup of soaked cashews, about 1/4 cup of water (more if needed) and the rest of the ingredients (EXCLUDING soy milk and grape seed oil) in a blender and blend until smooth. :)
Thank you for sharing this recipe it looks amazing. I’ve tried it about 6 times and every time it is coming out really runny, I’m doing everything the same but still can’t get it to thicken. I’m wasting so many ingredients! Please help if you have any tips?
I love your recipes. I am vegan and have been for a little over 2 years. I love mayo and make it quite often. My question to you is: How does vegan mayo stay fresh for a month?? I make vegan mayo and it does not stay fresh for longer than 2 weeks. I also do not use store bought sauces and dressings for the same reasons you mentioned in the video. I use black salt (Kala Namak), soy milk, vegetable oil, brown sugar, apple cider vinegar, lemon juice and mustard powder. Thank you.
I've just made this and it's amazing. The best I've tried. So much so I made another batch and made it a garlic one. I did use Sunflower oil though and it came out exactly like yours. I also added black salt to give that eggy flavour. Thank you for sharing x
You see I running a Personal Blog on Twitter and did notice you showing the actual ingredients in how it's made. Yes I did also recommend your video and other people to be following you and you are the first Actual Vegan person I like in home made in vegan in respect to you.
I made this mayo today and it is quite impressive how alike it is to real mayo! It tastes good just like this but I added 1/4 tsp lemon peel and 1 small garlic clove. Extra delicious!!!
Did you use soymilk? The purpose of soymilk is to provide the glycerophospholipid lecithin which emulsifies the fatty acids and effectively thickens the mayonnaise. You can use another plant-based milk, but, if you do, you should add 5-6 tbsp of lecithin to the mix to thicken it.
You absolutely can use any milk. The thickness of the mayo relies upon the presence of lecithin, and soymilk is very rich in lecithin. If you don't use soymilk, add 5-6 tbsp of sunflower lecithin to the mix to achieve the thickness of mayonnaise.
Uh, Olga, how much of each ingredient do I use? Will I be able to use mustard instead of mustard powder? Can I omit the mustard altogether? First try did not work for me. I couldn't find agave so I used glucose syrup and used regular american mustard. I used my stick blender.
OK, tried it out. I sadly used a mixture of homemade rice+coconut milk - and no - it does not work with that milk. It turns out way too liquidy - still - the taste is great. I will use it as a salad dressing i guess, and next time i will try with soy milk. Thank you :)!
have you tried adding konjac root powder (diluted in the milk) ? it thickens food just like cornstarch but it goes with more recipes and does not have calories or carbs like cornstarch does!
Hi ! I've tried twice witout sucess haha ; I used white vinegar and lime juice instead of aple vinegar en lemon juice; and i was veryyyyy slow for putting the oil but I used an immersion blender... Do you think it's because of all that ?! :D thanks
If you're going to make it with tofu rather than soy milk you don't need so much oil..you can put 1 or 2 teaspoon,it's mayonnaise light!!! I do it and it's very good!!!!
Also, if you're using a bullet blender (which I wouldn't recommend unless it's the ONLY thing you have on hand 😅): Pour a little at a time gradually as she does in the video, and when you go to blend it, PULSE it so it only blends/spins a little at a time. I've found this helps create that same airy effect and you'll still be able to produce an equally beautiful & delicious vegan mayonnaise without need for a full-on Vitamix. Peace and love 💖🌿
If you do, make sure to add 5-6 tbsp of lecithin to the recipe, otherwise the hydrophobic and hydrophilic components will remain separated. Lecithin, found in soymilk but also obtainable from sunflowers, is amphipathic and can bind aqueous and fatty components together.
I was like oh man I'm not going to have some of the ingredients..but I have all!!!! Thank you! Question: can I make this in a food processor or do I need to use my blender?
I made this and it has a great consistency but tastes like soy milk. I put in a little olive vinegar (from a jar of olives) to bring a little deeper flavor. It's not bad and it's nice on bean burgers but I think I'll try more lemon and mustard in the next batch and no sweetener. Maybe some Tumeric. I definitely see how you could tweak the recipe to make whip cream. It's fun.

Nope, it doesn't work with any other plant milk, only with soymilk, unfortunately...

It was way easier than what I thought. Thanks Olga!!
Javiera Uchida Yep! It's super easy!!! :D
Great recipe, thanks for sharing. Can I skip Agave? Is it for sweetening? Will it make a big difference in taste? Please reply.
Wonderful vegan mayonnaise recipe, works very well with almond milk by the way.
Can anyone tell me that can i use normal vinegar rather then apple cider vinegar
I am wondering if coconut cream might be a good replacement for soy milk?
Dylan Fowler you can use any other milk cashew milk exc
I used coconut milk and ended up with a liquid result :/
Evan Ellis same here. I ended up getting success with lactaid milk. I had to blend longer but it worked.
Yes! coconut, cashew or almond milk are great options!
Use the cream only n not the liquid
Just made this recipe (with sunflower oil) and it was GREAT! perfect. Can't recommend it enough (with sunflower oil).

Thank you. This looks good. I'm going to try it. I have oat milk. Would that work?
I made your mayonnaise and it was very good. Thank you for the recipe. There is water separating from the mayo, not oil. Does that indicate it's off?
Hi fab lunch, instead of agave, use dates syrup as dates is the highest antioxidants than honey & agave etc.
why mine didn't get thick? :-(
apparently you have to pour the oil in very very slowly to thicken
Luna Tainstvennaya mine didn’t either
Malita Jones didn’t matter didn’t thicken at all
And you can putt it in the fridge that helps
