For those who joked about how dirty the water is, this is simply not the case. Qiantang River is one of the cleaner water body in China. The river water naturally carry certain amount of small particle of sand and silt, usually suspended in the water. As the water approach the ocean, the salinity change in the water causing the small particles from the water to precipitate, depositing on the bottom of the riverbed. As the big waves come in, the power of the wave picks up the silt from the bottom of the river, makes it very muddy.
Yes, the opaqueness of the water is mainly due to silt being stirred up by the tide......but there's probably also a f***ton of pollution in that water, too.

This is a natural phenomenon also called "Pororoca" in Brazil. It happens basically because the seawater invades the river water during the higher tides of the year. As we know, the ocean is stronger than the river, so the impact results on 'waves' like that. It depends of the local geography as well.

@TrixKoMAToSe It has to do with the 3 dimensional shape of the estuary. This is a massive simplification, but it's a little like the same way a water pistol works. The tide comes in , and the shape of the estuary concentrates a lot of water into a very small area, creating an effect a lot like a tsunami. That's why tidal bores are a lot more powerful than other waves of similar size.
How did you go about doing this? I am very interested in surfing the Qiatang river. My questions are how did you get a jetski? Is it legal to do or did you just send it? Did you spend a couple days near by and just go when the tidal bore was pumping? I am living in Shanghai for a year and would love to surf this tidal bore. Please send me any information on how I can do this.

@killerhook07 And yes, you can ride tidal bores for miles. A friend of mine hold the current world record of around 7.5 miles set in 2006 on the river Severn in the UK. I don't think that record will stand for much longer. It'll be beaten either on this wave or the Araguari Pororoca in the Amazon .

On a visit to the Nanyang chemical industry zone, near Hangzhou, I found that despite its veneer of beautiful flowers, the area has pollution problems that have not been dealt with effectively.

This one is empty because you can only surf it if you get a license from the Chinese authorities. Last time anyone surfed it without a license was the french crew, Antony and Fabrice Colas,+ Patrick Audoy who pioneered the Bono tidal bore in Sumatra . The Chinese arrested them for their trouble.
The people who surfed it unlicensed before that were both killed by it. This video is shot on one of the smaller sections of the wave, which goes to almost 30 ft in (often) less than 2 ft of water

That water was so polluted and nasty, I'm wondering is these foolish peoples are not sick or dead from going into it. I would be nice to have feedback on the health ramifications of their actions, because the waves themselves were awesome and long, but I couldn't imagine what was in that ravine...
