LIVE ACRYLIC PAINTING OF A LARGE COMMISSIONED ART - PART 5 -with abstract artist Lori Mirabelli

- Опубликовано: 3 мар 2021
- Hi everyone welcome back!!! In this video, I'm working on painting panel 2 in this large acrylic abstract painting. The overall size will be 18x13 feet. At the start of this video, you can see I have only the underpainting laid down, so I thought it would be helpful to explain why the underpainting is so important to the overall acrylic painting. You can use underpainting in many art styles. The underpainting applied is generally monochromatic and serves to define colours and values for the painting that comes later. I don't use monochromatic layers as I like to spice things up and use parts of the underpainting in my final composition. An underpainting also helps to great rid of the dreaded white canvas and gives you a starting point. It helps to loosen you up and get you ready for the subsequent layers that are to follow. Here is the finished painting installed

As always if you enjoy this video give thumbs and comment down below.
FYI - I have just heard the installation has been pushed to mid-May thanks to Covid-19.

Honestly Lori, you are my latest binge obsession. I find your videos both mesmerising and relaxing while so helpful and informative at the same time. I’m not an abstract artist but I am 100% on board with the idea of layers and depth in paintings. I love colours shining through even if they aren't seen’ in the finished piece. I’m a novice still but practicing, reading, watching, studying hard out to improve. Thank you for your videos and commentaries. Loving them!
I'm so glad! That truly makes me happy to hear that you and others are enjoying the videos. 😊
A couple of weeks ago, when I found your channel, I never for a moment thought I would be interested in watching production of your commissioned abstract. Then you started talking and explaining what you were doing and why you were doing it. I was hooked. I am so in love with this commissioned piece you're doing. The depth of layers, colors, etc. just pulls me right in; not to mention how etherial it is. Thank you for explaining everything so well.
Hahaha that's amazing Linda and yay!!!! I can't tell you how happy that makes me. lol I guess the voice overs are better then the music in the background lol
@@lorimirabelliabstractartist:) :) :)
I think an abstract painting is done when you run out of areas that you want to change and when you have enough areas that you want to keep. Best of all, when you get areas that look better than you could have ever imagined and you see something there that inspires you.
Oh Lori!
You have me chuckling with your chats. I’m about 2 hours away and I so wish you were my neighbour! 😀
I used to create abstracted landscapes - and Im learning that if I use that landscape as my underpainting and keep going then I can get to a place that makes me happier. I’m learning to not rush the process. I love when I get to that point that I can add layers or simplify an image - I actually love it all (even when Im fighting with a canvas) but the last layer is my favourite!
haha lol I'm so happy you are enjoying them ❤️🥰🥰🥰
Thankyou for posting this painting as you worked on it, very telling of so much more than you know, very inspiring and I understand fully how much work it is, as I love being an artist full time as well, going on 50 years. Dont even consider the negative comments, every eye and every style has its own preference, negative comments are just a signal of an immature attitude concerning artists who create in their own lane. Have a great day!
I agree completely agree. RUclips has to be the worst place for trolls but I have been fortune to only have a few fools come my way lol Congrats for 50 years in the business! very impressive. You absolutely understand hard work!
I love watching you painting….and dancing…and telling us about your thouths… Greatings from Norway🥰
Thank you so much! Glad you enjoyed it
I’m so amazed and inspired by your talent Lori. Thanks for another awesome upload! 👌👍👏
Jeffrey thanks much!! 🥰🥰
I just love listening to you talk about the process of painting. So inspiring.
Awww thank you Anna 🥰
I'm still watching but I gotta say, I'm so happy when I see you take your eye off the ball every once in a while. You're truly comfortable with your brush. I've always been tempted to blindfold myself just to see what my eyes project on canvas. Ha
LOVE you and your drive.
Hahaha thanks Robin!!! That would be a really cool project to try!!!
Hello Lori, I also found your channel recently. I absolutely love your art and generosity in sharing so much information across the board from techniques, pricing, marketing etc.
I think your new home, studio, grounds, views and manege' for the horses, is gorgeous.
I wish you every happiness, inspiration and great success in your new adventure.

Trying to figure out paintings at galleries is one of my favourite things to do. I feel studying in that way made me realize how much painting was an illusion or abstraction rather than a detailed reproduction. Love seeing you continue to work on this large scale project
Wonderful! Yes so true 😊
I'm not a painter, but I really understand the concept of building your white spaces. I love the way the white area is 3 dimensional. I can literally see into the painting, if that makes sense. I'm enjoy watching you create. Im learning alot. THANK YOU.
It's that time of the night again Lori!😂😂😂
I absolutely enjoy these videos. Love that you're dancing your way through it all. Thank you always for sharing your authenticity. 🙏🏽💖💖💖
haha Enjoy!!!!
Thank you thank you for another great video! Also, the underpainting is the yummy hidden treasure!!
Exactly!!! 😊😊😊
Lori, you are so generous with your knowledge. I would love to be able to paint with so much freedom and looseness! Thank you. I love your art!
Thanks Pamela!!! So glad you enjoyed 😊
Wow!So helpful to watch your process:. Thank you. I am so glad I remembered to check out your RUclips!
I love your dancing…I get too stressed to do that. Thank you so much for sharing your process. Can’t wait to see the finished pice in all its glory.
Love how you really move around placing a little bit here, little there, little bit every where. Painting can be a slow process and things can change just by a flick of a brush. Love it!
yes absolutely sometimes a quick ten minutes and a piece I've been struggling with can complete a painting. I still get blown away on how that happens.
I have Loved watching you work through this!! Coming along ... so beautiful!
Thanks so much Susan❤️ it’s been great so far. Now to tackle the 3rd panel
I am loving this painting! In my opinion, every good painting has an under painting, it is the hidden mark of the artist and your dancing is all over this!! 😂 keep it coming !!
I totally agree! and thanks so much🥰🥰🥰
Hi Lori. Fellow single Toronto girl here. LoVE LOve LoVe to watch you paint. You're so talented
Thank you so much Kelly!!! 🥰🥰
I love painting with many different whites to create subtle areas. So rich. So many layers! Wonderful!

HI Lori. I'm truly enjoying your videos. Thanks ofr recording these helpful pointers and techniques. I am searching for the final video or at least photo f what this piece looks like complete. Thanks, Carole
Just binged a few more of your vids. Love watching you work!!

Love your spirit. You are so easy to watch and listen to. You answer all of the questions I ask while watching. 🙏
I'm so glad Donna!!! Thanks so much 🥰

Lori, you are truly gifted and I just love hearing you talk. I love that you are having so much fun painting!!!
Awww thank you!!! Yes.... I try and have fun while I paint my works is better when I’m just playing around.
It truly is just so much fun -- and educational -- to watch your videos! Thanks for sharing your knowledge!!
No problem Carolyn so glad you are enjoying the videos 🥰
Outstanding as always Lori!
Oh thank you!😊
I’m on this last of your videos and have loved every one of them and all of your process. I also saw your final masterpiece. WOW!!!! I’m curious as to your original reference piece.
It was a smaller version of this large piece. That's what the client chose. Well I might have to get my self in gear and start ing making some new videos. I have completely been slacking on the youtube front. 😂
it’s great to see a different. And I mean totally different style. it has actually given me a few ideas for background and a few ideas for a series. Thanks for sharing Lori.
this was based off an earlier body of work or mine. 🥰
Loving the underpainting.. it’s amazing..
Aww thanks Lorinda😊
I think this is my favorite of all of your pieces.
Aww thanks Fran. ❤️
I love how frank you are with your comments and explanations. It's disappointing when other artists on youtube, that you're hoping to learn from, just gloss over their dilemmas, frustrations and errors in favour of slick video production.
I'll never be a slick productionist. It's incredibly time consuming and I truly just want to paint. Every week I keep saying ok this is my last video 😂😂. Glad you find them helpful. Soon I'll do more painting videos.
I really love the middle panel with all the white and bit of colors showing through...really lovely and then the white reminds me of gauze. It has such a delicacy to it that’s very pleasing to look at . I’m amazed at all the work you do and then it just all comes together so beautifully. 👍
Thank you so much Nancy, I agree panel 2 ( the middle piece of the painting) has some really pretty details in it.
I’d love to see detail demo how you develop your white backgrounds. They are absolutely exquisite‼️‼️
Thank you so much for generously sharing your process with us. Love your work. It is Amazing!!! Love it. :))
You are so welcome!
Hi just had to say.. this slow format is fabulous to watch.. no need to talk all the time.. just love the process! There are not many artists on RUclips willing to show this length of video, thank you for your generosity..!
Thanks so much! There is a reason why artist don't want to show their process and I can understand it. I'm going to talk next week a bit about this very topic. 😊
Very nice friend,amazing😉😉❤️❤️
Thank you 🤗

Would love to see your reference photo. Great lesson on underpainting here!
Hi Duncan I made a decision at the start of this project that I wouldn’t show the reference photo. It’s keeps the negative comments down and takes the pressure of me 😊
Yes love the underpainting!

Hi Lori, I think you can explain you work very good and the layering process...and I love the voice of your voice!!! I can already see that your three pieces will come together. It is natural that you do not like to speak so much. You can watch Gerhard Richter (one of the top painters in germany) in interviews. He is not the best speakers...you have to hear with the heart...he is one of the best painters...now he is in his eighties. Greetings from the cold mountains. Barbara
He is a marvellous man and very talented!!! I adore him and his work. ❤️❤️❤️

hi maam i always watch your interesting video,im also an abstract painting lover.
That's so great, thank you so much 😀
The suspense is killing me! 😊😊😊
I know I know and I just found out installation is delayed now to mid May 😩
Hello Lori,
Wow what a gigantic painting. My question is how are they hung? Maybe you could do a video on hanging your canvas. Everybody seems to do it differently. Thank you sooo much for all your work. ❤❤👌
These 3 canvas will stack on above each other to make one entire painting. Also this piece is being professionally installed. It’s for a commercial project. Way too big for me to tackle on my own. Honestly I just paint them I’m usually not present when my paintings arrive in their clients home 😊
Thank you for letting me know. I was wondering lol. Take care👍❤
I think you answered most of my questions as you went through the video, but here’s what I came up with. Number one, is this commission for a specific buyer? Number two, I see you looking to the right referencing some thing. Is it a photo, or a sketch that you have done that you are working from? Number three, is this developing purely from your imagination or is it from some other source? It sounds like it might be installed in a museum or gallery. Will you show us your reference material? I think it would be a great learning tool for us to see what you started with as a reference and what you ended up with as your final painting. I love that you’re going so large and I’m so envious.
OK Lori I am nosy....what kind of music do you listen to? You look like a happy painter. All the talking and info you give has been so much help and inspiration. Especially about the backgrounds.
oh gosh I listen to tons of music..A lot from 80's and some reggae and dancehall too.
💙💙💙
Lori, first I just wanted to say “ThankYou” so much for all of your wonderful Videos!!! I’ve been painting for 5 years now and I really enjoy the process of making a painting however at times I do become overwhelmed by the whole entire process & I have learned that if I just stop painting & walk away for a period of time I’m
much better prepared when I return to continue working on my painting. Just a comment about the person who wrote to you & said that you do not look at your paintings enough? I disagree as that is what I noticed about you that caught my eye and impressed me as you always seem to be looking at your paintings like a hawk!!!
Maybe the
Guy who made that comment thought that you should have done something different on a painting & therefore assumed that you were not looking?
ThankYou again for all of your wonderful Videos as they are all so helpful! as well as interesting! Thomas
Thank you Thomas. I appreciate that. There will always be haters. They don’t bother me. He was annoyed that I sketched out the piece first. And I would glacé the mock up to make sure I was on track. What he didn’t take into consideration is this was 3 panels stacked but because I could o let stacked two at a time I need to make sure I was one my mark.
Regular speed is so much better! It gives a greater insight into the process somehow.
Well I'm glad you enjoy it!!! haha it's just so hard to talk for that long all by myself haha
Love it!
Question.....do you use a particular camera filter or lighting when you take pictures of your paintings to post online?
Only my iphone and natural lighting 😊
So you always add texture to the canvas first by applying flexible molding paste? In one video you are mixing, what is being mixed? Molding paste with something else? Thanks, love your paintings and watching the process!
Thanks for slowing the video and all your comments
No problem 😊😊😊 if this is what you all like then I’ll eventually get better at talking 🤣
I can't wait to see the final piece! Do you have a specific date to finish your artwork? what I mean is did they ask you a due date in the contract? IDK if that makes sense. I love your artwork and the depth of your pieces. I hope to hear you in Club House soon, social media is a lot of work but I heard so many interesting conversations in Club House. Thank you Lori. :)
I don’t even know what club house is. Lol the piece is being installed this Thursday. I’ll have photos to share on insta soon. 😊
Молодец !
where do you get the patience to do such large pieces? that's amazing.
I honestly just to know what I have to do and it...But it's been years leading up to this point. I was brutal when I first started out. lol
❤❤❤❤ ❤

I’m enjoying watching this commission coming to life,
you are a very accomplished
artist Lori 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻. Are you using high flow acrylics.
bye for now, till next time take care🌈🙏 UK
Thanks so much Jennifer...There is a mix of types of paints that I'm using, mostly soft bodies.
Is there a video of the finished or almost finished piece? I’d love to see ! Have enjoyed the process!
I only have a photo of the finished painting now that It's been installed. I couldn't show the whole painting in process as my ceilings weren't over 18 feet instagram.com/p/CSWi7TMrkXi/
Hi Lori. Really enjoying your videos and mix of painting/ business insights. Love your comments about layering. I notice you keep looking to the side - are you looking at a reference image while you work? If so, is it as big as the painting? Also would love to know what music you’re listening too, love the dancing 😁👍
Lol just found my answers on your previous video. Note to self, watch in order 😂
Haha no worries so happy that you are enjoying the videos. My music changes all the time so it would be hard to list what I’m listening to. Lol I love all music.
Hi there! I really like your art❤❤❤ Do you varnish all of your paintings, especially the bigger ones? And is it ok to leave them the way they are?
Lori just found you and wow,I watched about three videos already! I have to ask you how do you get your underpainting to show through? You mentioned glazing,do you use glaze medium only after you are done with your underpainting? Are the washes you mention the same as glazes? Do you paint over your glazes with paint without medium? Sorry a lot of questions it just that I’m having trouble getting my underpainting to show through. Thank you, thank you, so much!
How do you focus on one painting for so long. I would be so over it by now. I know this painting means money for you so that must keep you motivated. Love your paintings they always remind me of old painted walls where you can see all the other colours used underneath.
I just set my goal and my goal is to finish the painting if I don’t finish it I’ll be in trouble so it’s a matter of being determined to complete a task LOL. Plus paycheques nice at the end too 🤣
I must have missed something…I’ve been following these, and enjoying them…but where is part six and seeing it in situ?
I have a technical question. Do you do a final coat of varnish when you are finished? How do you do that on such large canvases? Congrats on finishing your three panel commission! Wow! That’s all I can say 👍quite the accomplishment!!!!!!!! Hope you can share a final pic of the installation.
Yes I will be putting a final coat of vanish on the painting once I get confirmation from the purchaser. varnishing a piece this large completed in sections with very light layers.
please please do the videos on paint strokes etc! i will wait. great work fellow canadian!
Thanks Jayne....🥰 I'm on much needed vacation but I'll be back shortly with some new videos!!
I've heard it said that a painting is never truly done, it just stops in an interesting place.
I have never heard that before lol
Hi Lori - I've just watched up to the end of this one but can't seem to find the next one. Is there a part 5 or did you stop making process videos after this one? I've really enjoyed these and find them so inspiring. Thank you :)
I never got around to making the video for the work on the 3rd canvas. the studio got crazy busy and I had to focus just on the painting of it rather than trying to document.
@@lorimirabelliabstractartist Yes, I can understand this. Thank you for explaining and I look forward to seeing the finished work. Watching all the other videos and checking your Instagram out meanwhile :))
Do you create your reference photo on a computer or do you do a smaller version of the large painting? Love your work ♡
Thank you
Nope I don't use the computer to create mock ups. This piece was based off another painting that I did. It's what the client choose.
@@lorimirabelliabstractartist that's awesome, love the real deal♡
Haha 😂 thank you
Hi Lori
Just listening to what your expressing ... re: some people expect a play by play of every step you make... that’s impossible... sure Art can be learned but you either have that innate ability or you don’t right?
I know you do & I’m pretty sure I do but sometimes to convey that is difficult. I embrace the fact that people are learning to take on or learn different things considering we have all been at home a lot more but the thing that bugs me is some people think that because they’ve done a few paintings that they now deem themselves “Artists” which is a little off putting as many of us have put a lot of
schooling and work into our
practice. Just a thought I wanted to share . I think you’re
great and you have a wonderful way about you! Keep it up!⭐️
You’ve got 3 panels on this one piece right? The secret is that they can all work independently
by themselves ... it’s exciting it will be nice to see them all together!
Hi Elaine I don't think you are alone in feeling the way you do. What I can say you is, when I look back at my art when I first started with abstract paintings I'm mortified.. and I actually sold them lol I was by no means an abstract painter. We all have to start somewhere and the ones that make it through are the ones that put in 110%. I think having natural ability may increase your chances of becoming successful but so will having other skills such marketing and sometimes a healthy ego hahaha. I'm not sure what I'm trying to say....I guess don't let what other are doing impact what goals you set for yourself. Keep on your path and work hard.
P.S. Also there are also the ones that will simply try and take advantage of any situation....I just ignore those ones😂😂😂
hey just saw your answer to this question I asked and understand. thanks j
hahaha 🥰
I really want to know your thoughts about art laws like copywrite etc.and thank you so much for this video
It's on my list!!!! such an important topic.
Thank you thank you 🙏. And god bless you ☺️
@@amarpreetart Same to you as well😊
Hello Lori. I like your style very much. I am learning how to paint abstract about a year ago, following several abstract painters on You Tube. I am enjoying it as a hobbie . Iam a very emotional person and is very difficult to me to stop making marks so my paints looks like a garage sale as Nicholas Wilton say. Ignorance is bold, so I began doing my mess on big canvas with professional paints. Does a painting always should have a rest area to the eye in order to be good? (Excuse my bad english, is my second language)
No i dont think they always need a rest area but if no rest area then the painting should having more of an organized pattern so that the eye can follow and not get overwhelmed
Great work. What was the reference photo for?
This commissioned as based off another painting and in order to scale it up to 18 feet I need to use a reference photo of the original painting.
Is it difficult to determine how to place dark/light values when it is a triptych this size and you are working on each piece separately?
I tell the story of how I’m working the project in my videos this is forth video in the project. It might be easier to start from the first video 😊
@@lorimirabelliabstractartist I have been following the progress with great interest, but the task still looks very challenging :)
Awwww ok good 😊 yes of course it’s challenging but I’ve been this for a year 😊
Completely understand the layering process. I put in all sorts of layers to build up to what the final painting becomes. Without that, it's just flat and uninteresting -- at least to me.
I 100% agree the more layers the more interesting a piece can become ❤️
Hey Lori, just wondering how this painting is coming along. Is it finished? Has it been hung in the lobby?
PS: your dancing is great....it's energizing..... ignore that negative comment! She knows nothing 😁
Thanks Shirley! I just finished it this weekend and posted a couple photos. I cant reveal the entire piece yet as it needs to be installed first. Unfortunately a bit delayed. Looking the end of May for installation. ❤️
Is there a video showing the final result? I’m very curious, but I don’t see it
I know what abstact is but is there a theme and if it is mural for someone what is the meaning? Love it though
It's going into a Condo Lobby in downtown Toronto. The original body of work that this piece was chosen from is about the "concrete jungle" here in downtown Toronto. The industrialization of our planet and my longing for serenity that comes with the outdoors in the north. You'll have to see the piece close up to see the details of the industrial components that work together to create the overall image.
@@lorimirabelliabstractartist Like the story and Juxtapostions of Industrial throught the chaotic word of Abstract is not lost on me. Even if I do get lost in Toronto. The ability of balance in the city can be a challenge. But that is life as your art is life so kudos
