  • @nobodyfamousX

Excuse me, the Jackass game was fun as hell. It was a series of minigames loosely based on stunts they did in real life.
There was one where you have to get your character (who is riding a shopping cart).close to the edge of the building without sending him off (or just send him flying off the edge.
Another with you in a bubble and if you click the button at the right point your character rag dolls out of the bubble and you have to launch him as far as possible.

The problem with 3D when it went mainstream is that it requires an entirely different approach to filming and editing, it's way more involved than just "film it with a 3D camera". Adding depth perception to an image is makes it so much more immersive that traditional photography techniques can really screw it up, simple things like depth of field need to be seriously reconsidered and used appropriately. And even simple editing decisions like using a crossfade can completely ruin the illusion.

A thing about 3D movies that is really horrible is that the 3D effect is based on your eyes looking the same place that the camera is, so as an audience you can't really focus on what the camera doesn't want you to focus on. In Avatar, there is so much happening on screen, and not just in the center of the screen. It can give you vertigo. Jackass wins because, even beyond the technology, the shot composition is great, and the focus moves around on screen too instead of just staying in the center while action moves across the screen like in other bad films of the time. Tron Legacy was great but it mostly kept the focus at the center of the screen.

Actually, the Red One digital cinematic camera was ludicrously inexpensive and revolutionised, not only indie films but, Hollywood as a whole. So, yeah, whilst it was utilised by Blockbusters, it was also used by cheap television productions and low budget films. Just as with ubiquitous 35mm film cameras of the not too distant past, it comes down to the choices of the cinematographer and their skills how the final images will turn out with a Red, film, Alexa or even Blackmagic cameras. The fact that the DP achieved usable 3D shots in single non-repeatable live takes is the most astounding bit. James Cameron could pretty much do as many as he felt he needed.

Immediately shooting down a genius intro idea like that so nonchalantly was a disappointment, and a bad look for Karl as a boss. Not to mention Jonah Hill, Craig Robinson, and the legendary appearance of Emma Watson. And I would contend that even though he had a minimal role, Danny McBride and his gimp Channing Tatum carried that movie.
