Spherical flight vehicle with a single rotor which can do VTOL and hovering is studied. The vehicle can also land or move on the ground by rolling. Even in circumstances such as sudden contact or crash, it hardly breaks due to the outer frame. This study derives the equations of motion for the vehicle whose thrust is controlled by a single rotor and is maneuvered by 4 control surfaces. An altitude hold controller is designed and tested by using Kalman Filter and PID.
I designed and manufactured all things such as SCAS controller used PID and Cicuit, Embedded controller, structure, GCS. Sensors are AHRS, Altimeter(Pressure+UltraSonic), RPM, volt, current.

What you hear is mostly the mosfets switching, not the prop.

This looks fun! Save, crash resistant. Does it fly more efficient than a quad? Might be hard to put a cam on it and balance it.

Some years thought about this idea but have no time to make.
Always wonder why it has not been done before. It is very logical. The cost factor of the hely eliminates in thise case. No need for complicated gear system.
Amazing work. I have a question. How are you managing the reaction torque for this single rotor device? I mean, when the propeller is spinning, what is stopping the sphere from spinning in the opposite direction?
The surface planes act in a way of a counter rotor, but instead of spinning, it uses the downwash from the rotor.
Those surfaces at the botom make the thrust go in the opposite angle to which the reaction torque is generated.. they cancel each other and thus it's stable.

How come , the body of the drone is not rotating. If the motor rotates clockwise, the body should rotate counter-clockwise...conservation of angular momentum ??
Could be a combination of several things. I think it might be two counter-rotating propellers. Lessen the rotational velocity on either and you have a torque imbalance.
There's a few close ups and I couldn't see a 2nd propeller. It could be the fins (wings?) redirect airflow? But then how would it navigate if the fins are busy trying to prevent rotation?
Sevendogtags maybe the mass of the structure is enough to keep it from spinning

Very Cool! Looks like a good configuration for a delivery drone with the single cowled prop. Any ideas about reducing the noise?
Second prop. Design it to cancel out the sound from the first using superposition of sound waves (super simplified explanation, you will need to do a lot of math and testing to get it to work without impacting the flight dynamics)
Owl Feathers like noise absorbing configuration on the blades an imprint on them serves its purpose

Why not putting the rotor in the middle to have more surface area? you can put also fins above the and bellow it to maintain a high surface area of fins. But I am curious for what purpose its designed I mean what are its advantages against a simple helicopter or a quad copter?

For stability I guess, this way it's got more weight beneath the rotor to keep it straight.

i had one of these fly past my window in uk. it was near silent though. perhaps it used a high torque low rpm motor with gearing rather than a high rpm motor as seen here.

simple design flys well. more testing needed. turbulence near structure? can it carry cargo. eg rescue operations similar to helicopters. I would design rotors below cargo carrying and cockpit. cog balance below cargo. Have design not interfere with downforce. that is have equal rotors spread outside and below cockpit. Similar to tightrope walker. Extended pole below COG.Doing engineering degree. Don't quote me jusy off the top of my head. Cheers.

Use a turbo fan instead of the old motor and propeller it will run much more quiet.
