- This video demonstrates how to repair the instrument cluster combination meter/speedometer display in a Toyota Prius 2nd Gen 2004-2009. For this vehicle the speedometer/instrument cluster was not working when vehicle is turned on and also the reverse camera showing on the monitor was not working when vehicle was put into reverse and reverse lights did not turn on. After the repair was completed the speedometer/instrument cluster, reverse camera, and reverse lights all work now.
I replaced the surface mounted 100uf 16v capacitor with a surface mounted 220uf 16v capacitor.
Before any work is started, if you have any doubts or questions, please consult a certified mechanic or service center and do not complete this work yourself. Safety is always first.

I used to repair clusters some years ago and one tip if are interested, If you are replacing one capacitor with a larger one due to what it seems the incorrect one chosen in the design (220uf instead of 100uf) as you are already spending time on removing all the board, is better to get an entire set of caps and replace all SMD and regular cylinder ones, when I used to repair I took my time to test all caps for my customers and a lot of them were still "good" when tested but leaking underneath and some other were off spec, so for the work done, replacing all is the greatest choice and try to spend some time with magnifying glass to make sure there all joints are healthy not cracked due to heat.
For the gen 2 Prius specifically? Do you think any benefit to put like a spray coating of Krylon clear coat or like quick chip silicone to better seal as well why at it?
You got lucky. By twisting the capacitor off like that, you could have easily broken off the copper solder pads. You should de-solder, not pull off by forced, otherwise, the rest of the video is very good. Thanks!
Depends on the board. Some are so fragile that even light heat lifts these additive traces. Others are bonded better. In any case, if twisting off the cap, it's best to push *down* while rotating. But yeah, some absolutely can't be twisted off even if done carefully.
100% percent correct. Desolder the capacitor. He got very lucky he didn't hose the whole board by ripping off solder pads. It looks like there's enough room you could probably solder the legs of a through-hole style replacement capacitor to those pads as well. That would be a lot easier that futzing with a surface mount replacement.
I'm so glad you posted this video. My dash display on my '06 has been going on and off lately, but I wanted to see if this could be fixed at home. My boyfriend (he was a mechanic for years, so he has all the tools we needed) we finally did this repair yesterday and it worked. Mahalo Braddah!
Awesome!! Please subscribe if you want
This problem must be one of the most frustrating issues for most Prius 2Gen owners. I am sure many share my appreciation of this video and the instruction you provided for us to fix this problem.
Thank you very much......very very much indeed. Bless you!

I performed this repair on a 2005 Prius and I haven't had a blank speedometer since. This repair works great. It was a little tricky to remove the display from the dash, but it was worth it.
Best I've for this type of vid, thorough and speedy. Thank you
Thanks very much for this video! I saw some of these tips in other videos, but no one else put it all together the way you did. The braided copper solder cleaning was brilliant, and every step you demonstrated worked perfectly for me. This was the smallest, most delicate soldering job I have ever done, and it worked flawlessly. My stepdaughter's car is now FIXED, and she is very happy (me too!). Great job on the video, and thank you again!
Thank you much for your video. I am the original owner of 2008 Prius with 185K miles on it. My display started to occasionally not turn on about two years ago, and I can use the quick method(s) to make it work for more than a few months a time. However the problem get more frequent recently so I decided to replace the C3 capacitor as described by few smart users on the internet. I followed the video procedure(s) to remove the parts to access the Display and Combo meter without much difficulties. I removed the surface mounted 100uF 16v capacitor C3 by using a iron to melt the leads easily and replaced it with a surface mounted 220uF 16v capacitor (a tricky task). I measured the original C3 capacitance to be 216uF on board before it was removed. The C3 capacitance is 247uF on board after the new 220uF was installed. I also measured all other capacitors on the Display board and they are all good! After putting back everything together back on car, it works nicely except the fuel level indicator (had 80% of fuel before the repair but it shows 60% after the work). I will go through few pumping cycles to see what happens or I will follow the procedure to re-calibrate the fuel meter display.
Great job on the video, and I really appreciate it!
You’re welcome... thanks for watching and the comment!!
Great video. I am not ready to go to this level to fix yet on my 2009 Prius. Using the hack method at the moment to restore dash. With Prius powered off, driver side door open, step on brake and simultaneously turn headlights on and off rapidly. Red open door light will turn on and dash will work. Guessing this may discharge the capacitor as a sort of reset??
Thank you! Superb technique on your soldering prep and repair. One thing that really helps is a needle tip solder tip. It allows you to get the heat on a small soldering point. On another video, the guy doing the demonstration showed how to leave a little more wire on the replacement capacitor and then bend them like little legs with feet. It gives you a bit more room to maneuver the soldering tip to the pads.
Tim L. PINE Thanks!
Its also a good chance to remove the noisy beeper from the back of the board
I'm curious to learn how you determined the capacitor was the defective component. Thank you for publishing your video.
I did many hours of research online
It's a known common failure point for this model
Very nicely done. You did not go into how you decided that particular capacitor was bad and not any of the others.
I removed the 100 and replaced with a 220 uf 16 v . Had a difficult time with the soldering but kept trying and got it. Put it all back together. Broke 2 of the A/C vents but the dashboard is working! Hurray the capacitors were 5.00 for 5. It took me a full day but I am happy. Thanks for the video. I did this on faith that the 100 capacitor was the reason for dark display and so it was. Without youtube I would have never had a chance.
Nice.. those ac vents and the plastic around them are prone to cracking
Great vid. where are you located and would you be willing to do mine if I brought it to you. If so what would the cost be? thanks
Thx for the video. Just did mine took my about an hour and a half. Things look like there working the way they should now. With out your video it would of took my alot longer for sure.
What about all the other caps? If that one failed the other ones are soon to follow. While the board was out you should've replaced them all to not chance them leaking and damaging the board.
My understanding is that this capacitor needed to be a different size
Thanks for this Video! I just performed this repair and it worked great! Great Video!
I’ve had this problem with my 07 now for a few years and now it’s time I need to sell it and I don’t want to give the same problem to my buddy that I’m selling it to. Is there any tips that you have that weren’t in the video?
Hello, do you have a link to see where I can get the exact capacitor?
Mine has this problem, I usually just wait for it to come back on, because it usually does after a while. Is this an easy fix?
Did the 100uf cap replacement today with a 220uf 50v ... after attach to board it was showing 203uf. still the display will not come up broke 2 of the vents as well out of ideas now ...
Dude you should NOT go over the volts. The original is 16v. You can use a higher capacitance, but NOT higher voltage.
@@CronusVelox why not ? Voltage rating mean max it can handle right ? Can you validate your argument mate
@earthlingi72 Generally yes. But I would still try to get a component similar to the one you're replacing. Some electronics require a minimum esr for circuitry. Getting a bigger voltage lowers esr. I saw another video where someone said when toyota replaces these capacitors they replace it with a 220uf 16v capacitor. Honestly tbh now that I'm thinking about it I think you're right it shouldn't break your dash if you do use a higher voltage.
On that topic, were you able to fix your dash? I'm going to try fixing mine this weekend
@@CronusVelox mine did not work for few days after fix and then suddenly out of the blues it started working. I have no clue why, it could have been the ribbon cable was not making contact or any other thing. It was working well until this month (after one year) but within the last 3 weeks twice the display went blank for few seconds while driving. I could not find tantalum caps so used regular caps and may be they dont last long due to dashboard getting burning hot up in sun. my suggestion is, after fix, connect the display and check if its working before put the dashboard back again as to make sure. Good luck !
electrolytics have polarity, make sure to match the new one's polarity to the old. it was done correctly in the video. see the black semicircle marking on the top or the stripe if you use a through-hole type
Why didn't you solder the pins to the capacitor from under the board?
My Dash keeps going out when it rains or gets cold out and have to reset it everytime. What is the cause? Thank You!
Would this have anything to do with my turn signal lights not working?
This is the best video of this fix by far. Do you think it would have been easier to add solder to the capacitor first instead of adding solder to the board? That way the connector on the solder has thick solder making it easier solder the two together
Sonnylintag Thank you!!! No, the pins under the capacitor are small and the plastic under capacitor would probably melt. Thanks for watching! Please subscribe
@@hatalarious The 220uF/16V capacitor that I ordered was larger and came with longish leads so I clipped them to size and bent them like little legs with feet. It stuck up away from the board about 1.5mm but still had plenty of clearance and made the soldering job that much easier.
Tim L. PINE Cool I didn’t see that type before.
@@TimLPINE is this a fix for if the speedometer cluster goes out?
@@kbanghart Yes; it shows how to remove the bad capacitor from the display circuit board and solder in a replacement capacitor.
You can perform this repair without removing the central touch screen unit. I found the area I needed to be really careful and gentle was when I tried to remove four plastic vent covers. They are so fragile and really easy to crack and break into pieces. If anyone out there who knows the trick of the trade for removing the vent covers without damaging them, I would like to know. Thanks,
Does this work for Prius gen 3 from 2010, 2011 ? Thanks
Looks like it works great. I need someone to do this for me. Mechanics only remove and replace. What key words can I search to find someone local to do this?
Did you find someone to do it, and if so how much did they charge?
which soldering n desoldering tool u used?
is this the same problem have the instrument cluster of the gen 3?
my prius gen 3 sometimes when i power on the car, the instrument cluster doesn't light on but the car still start
hello, did not understand why was replaced 16v 100mkf and installed 16v 220mkf?
Well done 👍🏻 very helpful!!! I would like to send you 💰 for being so helpful!
Thanks for watching!! Im glad I could help. You can email me at hatalarious@gmail.com and we can talk more
Very nice info...thanks!
I'm gonna try it on my '08....
my take from this is watch more than one video to do this repair. hahaha
Very good video helpful thank you 🎉😂
damn, i put a 16v 270 capasitor on there because that's what i had, now the remote or the speedometer works, but not together :(
Can I use 470 uf 16 v instead ??
Quick question. Why can’t I replace the bad 100UF 16V with the same one instead of the 220UF 16V. Sorry I’m new to this. Thank you
from a previous comment, sounds like toyota misjudged the capacitor they would need, so theoretically this is a permanent fix to the problem.
hi there,my 2006 prius engine light not showing may be burn, what type of replacement bulb going to use?
Hi thanks for subscribing. I’m not sure if it’s the bulb. Did you try scanning your car for any error codes?
SHOULD THE POWER CONNECTORS AT BATTERY BE UNPLUGGED FIRST
After doing this repair, my cluster illuminates every time ! BUT..now the first bar on the fuel gauge flashes instead of reading how much fuel is in tank...I took it back out, looking for something left unplugged, but it all looked good..I did the fuel gauge reset/calibration, which did nothing...any ideas?
Sorry I’m not sure
I have the same problem on mine, did you find a solution? Edit: after turning the car off and on a couple of times the gas gauge is working normal.
Is there a reason you used 220uf instead of 100uf?
What does it say on the capacitor itself? It's the part number.
I was wondering the same thing
If you remove the original cap and test it, you'll find the value and ESR aren't too far off. This means the cap (bypass in this application) is marginally spec'd for value. A new cap of the same value might die even sooner. A 220uf gives more "headroom" as it ages.
I saw in another video if toyota replaces your dash that the new ones come with a 220uf instead of a 100uf. So might as well up the capacitance
I am going to try this. I will let all the know about later ❤️😍👌
Hi. My prius changed the cluster combination meter (220, 16v) and the dashboard is still black. Has anyone had this problem?
Hi, How much you charge to do the capacitor repair?

Hello, do you have a link to see where I can get the exact capacitor?
Thanks for subscribing! The description of the capacitor is in the description section of the video. I purchased the capacitor from eBay it only cost a few dollars. Sorry I don’t have a link
Nice video thanks a lot
Dose it matter when it comes to negative or positive connections on the new cap
Yes it does, always install the new capacitor exactly like the old one on positive and negative
What kind of solder did you use? Or what kind can I use?
Use a thinner gauge rosin core solder that says "for electronics". Don't forget to get some paste flux too. And a fine pointed soldering tip for your iron.
Thanks you I like you i I’m camobodai
Will a 220uf 25v work?
sorry I’m not sure I used the 220uf 16v capacitor
I used a 220uf 35v from an old printer and it worked.
Thank you
Where did you buy your cap from?

thanks, you are amazing, thank you friend
Thank you! We are going to try it!
How did it go?
Did you try it? Did it work for you?
@@tarawebster6797 Sorry, we didn't! We ran into unrelated problems with the car, so doing this repair sank on our list of priorities. We did order the little replacement part and still plan to try the repair--later this year, probably.
@@kbanghart Sorry, I didn't see your question before. We ran into a larger problem with the car, so this repair fell off the map for us :(

Great Video!, I did everything and it works but i now have an air bag light. From what i recall, there was 1 airbag plug (yellow) we disconnected. I double check connection it was fully seated. I went into diagnose screen by connecting pin 4 and 13 on the OBDii. there was some BS code that did not involve air bags. I cleared it anyways . it did not clear red air bag light. Anyone have same issue? Can anyone assist ?
Thanks!!! Is it the passenger off air bag light? Please subscribe if you want
@@hatalarious passenger air bag light is off. If i put pressure on the seat, it goes on like normal.
You can try unplugging car battery for about 5 minutes and reconnecting to see if that works.
Learn to solder, your tip was dry, had no fresh solder on it and couldn't transfer the heat effectively. Your solder wick never did anything in the video, never got hot enough.
Yes, I needed a new soldering iron and more practice but the repair I made still has lasted to date.
Where do you get the copasater?
Amazon.
If you can’t spell capacitor, you might not wanna try to do this yourself.
so it is 220uF?
That's what I used and what all the forums recommended; I think that's what Toyota did when they did these repairs under warranty.
Where can I buy the capacitor?
I got mine from eBay
hatalarious thanks
My dash came on and off, mean the capacity going to bad right.
After replacing it worked and finally turned on but my mph is stuck at 0 any suggestions?
I have no check engine lights at all
Sorry I’m not sure
Do NOT perform this twisting board SUICIDE! If yer gonna solder, SOLDER!
Yikes, do not rip capacitors off the board! Properly desolder them! You got very lucky you didn't rip the solder pads off the board. There's also enough room in there you wouldn't have to replace it with a surface-mount capacitor. You could much more easily solder the legs of a through-hole style capacitor onto those pads and call it a day!
Can I just pay you to fix it? cuz it keeps going out on my wife & it just went out on me today cuz there is no way I am going to be able to take apart that dash & do that I have skills but not in That department....
Thanks!! What State are you in?
