You dont have to leave 16 open. Program it just like any other channel. Set scan on in programming, then with channel set to 16, hold ptt and top orange side key while powering on to enable scan. It will scan ALL 16 channels.
There's a radio checkbox in Chirp, nut it doesn't work. A better headset would couple to your ears with positive results, assuming the speaker volume is normal.
Just to be clear (I'm sure this has been asked a lot) but do I NEED to reprogram them if I don't have any license, because I intend to use them at a school event to coordinate with other students helping and I don't quite understand all this frequency stuff
Technically yes. But they are such low wattage radios you will most likely not interfere with any other radio traffic anyway. That being said the programming cable is cheap, the program is free and there are videos showing how to program the FRS channels onto the radios.
@@mattruth8077 alright thank you, I'll consider buying the cable some other time as right now it is to close to the event to do anything about it, if in theory it should be fine. I'll test them to make sure they don't interfere with anything before handing them out to my group
Chirp doesnt let me write to vhf frequency 147.500, says its too low. The bf-888s application does allow it. But radio refuses to transmit when programmed to vhf The light does not light up or turn red. Does not send or receive...
si lo puedes poner en vhf esa radio..usa. el chirp pero en la frecuencia no le pongas las comas...o mejor pon el numero en block de notas y lo copias al programa chirp.y listo.
2 watts give or take. And in a city 2 miles in the open 5-9. Good for close communication in a SHTF situation. Durable and batteries are cheap. Highly recommend. Check out my other comms videos
Yes, he said they were sma female and as long as you keep them programmed in the legal frequencies you dont need a liscence. Ive got a range of probably a mile on them, but ive not tested them further than that
hello new here , i purchased too and i work in a warehouse as a turret driver and my radios did not pick up their channel and its the same radio even pxton
@@kevinbarrow4 it might have to do with the stock antenna? The antennas that come with the radio are really only “good” for uhf frequencies. I would look into purchasing a couple uv5r’s they are great little radios or the UV-82 I have a few videos of those.

I have these radios and sometimes they wont TX when I hit the PTT, the ptt red light blinks then they power off . I have to turn the radio off then back on again, sometimes a few times before I can TX again....anyone run into this?
Hello newbie here. I bough me this set from ebay for me and my fam in case SHTF so we can communicate. Do I have to put softwear? Or can I leave it the way it is and just use the same channel on all 4 wt? Also what antenna did you order because I would like to order it thanks 😊
I’d assume right out of the box they’re programmed with random frequencies somewhere in the UHF/VHF band. So they may work with each other but they won’t work with other radios if you don’t program them.
With my 888s, I can hit 3 x UHF repeaters all approx 40-60kms away from my residence. I live at rural property on side of hill and repeaters are all mountain tops. Flat terrain obviously a bit less.
Ehhhh sorta. Legally FRS radios CAN NOT have a removable antenna. These do so there's that. Is anyone ever going to say squat to you about it? Highly doubtful. Oh and speaking of removable antennas if you slap a Nagoya 771G on one of these BF-888s they turn into little beasts. (Gotta be a "G" series.)
Regarding using CTCSS, by using this You can interfere with others using the channel because you can't hear them. You should have ptt lockout checked in this case. It is against the law to interfere with other transmissions...

Side note are identical to "Retivis rh777" may not be exact model number but u will see they're cheap and great for convoys
They are all pretty similar! 👍🏻
Thank you, I just got mine but only came with two batteries. Thx
Can I program for VHF? Like police scanner?
I have exacly the same model thank you for the help using chirp !
there are no options to program the Tx/Rx repeater Freqs. Please confirm how will i do that on Chrip
I need to know the correct upgrade antenna for these radios.
Do you have to program these radios to use them or can they be used in a emergency situation right out of the box?
Welcome! Can you tell me where you ordered the slightly longer antennas from, please?! Thank you!
Finally a rwview of these thats decent lol
I have so many things to ask first is there any way to increase the volume of the headset and how do you use fm if its possible?
You have to buy a dual band handset
There's a radio checkbox in Chirp, nut it doesn't work. A better headset would couple to your ears with positive results, assuming the speaker volume is normal.
Where you buy the cable to program?
msmagic33able amazon!
How do you return it to the original frequencies?
I was told these would receive FM broadcast. Do you know how to make them do this?
Richard K Hester they can receive FM.
@@mattruth8077 How do you tune it and turn the FM on?
Yeah. I have the same question Matt...
They can not receive FM broadcast.
What kind of programming cable do I need. There's quite a few and a lot of them have conflicting reviews

no need- just the set the same channel on both the handset it will work...
Do these require a GMRS license? Also, what is the range for these? Do they have different power levels? Oh, and are the antennas SMA female? Thanks.

if you are transmitting on GMRS frequencies, yes you will need a GMRS license.
I've a retevis rt24 and got out to 3miles that's only 0.5w but in towns it's alot less
how to program it back to default?
You would of had to saved the original channel list clone.
Are the default settings frs frequencys ?
by default, they do not use FRS. you need to use cable and chirp to program FRS onto the radio
How do I find out what port its in
Sorry if i missdd it but do u need any liscense to use them

.5 watts and 2 watts

2-5 miles
In an urban/suburban setting about 1 to 1.5 miles, in an open area about 2 miles. Thes are low power radios, at most 2 Watts of power.
