Was thinking the same thing. When I saw the venue the first thing I did was go and check which year this was. Whether her music is someone's thing or not, you can't argue with her success!
I was really intrigued as to how you play this live, as there's so many percussive elements going on. It seems you decided to keep it simple and just groove, then have the backing tracks fill in the rest. Dope shit, bro. Would love to see more Ariana stuff!
Great drummer! The only thing I don't like but as a personal preference, is that I don't like snares being loose on a snare drum. I know it's to add a certain effect but I love tight sounding snares!
I'm a new drummer so forgive me if this is a dumb question -- did he play the open hi-hat at a different pitch to account for the key change at 2:46? If so, that's amazing
"Awesome Groove"? Hmm, well I just don't know. It looks to me that he is a very good, disciplined & extra fine drummer, but let's face it, there ain't NO real drums on an Adriana Grande album, just programmed computer generated drum sounds. That's the way music is produced in this era. In past decades, drum machines were created to use for demos, then they were slowly brought in to tastily augment the tracks around the real drum sessions...now today...they are ONLY what we use in today's pop music production. So why do Grande's executive concert producers bring in "real" drummers into her touring shows? JUST FOR THE LOOK! Otherwise she would be dancing her little spirit off, on a stage with just her gang of dancers with pre-recorded music tracks. But to keep the hype and excitement in a show cooking & boiling, "real" musicians are added in, just for the "WOW FACTOR". Don't be fooled, they are NOT needed, but rather, they are a "Necessary Evil" producers & promoters have to budget for. It's too bad, but it's the truth. Don't buy into any other lame excuse. - BCRadio.
So sorry Stephanie, if the truth offends you. But any one in the "music business" knows these are the plain facts of the entertainment business world, indeed. - BCRadio
RцSKY MдNE Because it’s not an acoustic sound. The electronic snare sound on his Roland SPD-S is being sent to the FOH and into the IEM mix. So you won’t hear it on the video because you can’t really hear the front of house, and you aren’t hearing the monitor mix.
I dont`t know what it is, but DW + Gospel Chops, linear fills+ modern music = Generic All The Same Aron Spears kind of everything. You Tube has killed personality in musicians. It`s all the same stuff over and over again, like matrix. It is very well executed, professional, perfect, but booooooooring!
He's the drummer, not the songwriter, for a highly successful mainstream pop artist. His job is not to be creatively interesting, it's to keep the things together and highlight Grande in whatever way the producer tells him to. I wouldn't use what he plays here as representative of his creative abilities as a drummer.
Dino Spumoni That part is true. I didn't mean to trash like some random troll. It is not about creativity, it is about linear rudiments that make every body sound the same. How is he ever gonna stand out with that attitude? Ask great names in drumming, or try to make them lose them selves. Everybody should have their unique sound. These church drummers all sound like one another.
Sofi alexander-pua No. He is not great. He is clean, disciplined and was at a right place at the right time. That is what working musician life is about.
Its pretty cool seeing a soundcheck for this size of a venue for Ariana Grande and thinking ab the size shows shes okayed now
This is why it’s important to be able to read SHEET MUSIC. Fantastic rudiments
And this is why I love drumming. Keep it up and keep on rocking.
JoMessin thanks
Dang! Look at the venues she's doing now! Love the vid.

Really inspired by you. Wanted to know what typically is coming through your in-ear during live shows?
From what I've seen, just normal ques, some will say what comes next and que for when something is gonna happen.

Aaron Spears is a very accomplished drummer and I would imagine this earns a crust. He is easily in the league of Ralph Rolle (chic)
Garry Morris That’s not Aaron

yet he's playing massive gigs for a popstar. Something obviously sounds great about his playing

Again, he is not the one writing the drum parts.
