I don't mean to sound like a smart butt, but to any listener who is above average, knows that Calvin and Danny are two of the most notorious for using ghost notes. they are notes that can just barely be heard underneath the music and are used, not only to keep tempo, but to add flavor to the music. you did a beyond amazing job, and stated once again, I don't want to come off as a know it all, but ghost notes are the key to this track. you may know of Calvin, but, for your further gain, check out Danny Carey Rosetta Stoned live and the drum covers for it.
Dude, you just helped me understand that paradiddle diddle lick! I have been trying t make sense of it so I could apply it and not until have I been able to understand it. Thanks alot dude.
I was just transcribing this the other day brother and I came across something wild: you play a paradiddle-diddle with a 6-stroke and phrase it to make it feel like 7/8. I like how you broke it down! Bless up...
Nice that you explained the different applications. Funnily enough I was thinking this morning that I should use the six stroke roll more and practice it more so I can pull it out of the bag easier. I'm very paradiddle diddle happy and have used his for triplets for most of my drumming life. I've been wondering which rudiment to give my student next - paradiddle diddle or six stroke roll. Interesting you think PDDs should he reserved for straight phrases. I agree the six stroke roll swings more. Cheers for this vid.
Rob Murray thanks for sharing your thoughts and for the encouragement! At this time in my progression as a drummer, I kept them separate in application to fit my play style better. PDDs are great in a triplet/sextuplet context also. I feel that for me though, six stroke roll in triplet phrasing seems to always flow better for me. Thanks again for watching!
noooo it was a paradiddle diddle... I know my rudiments dude. a six-stroke roll can be started with the accented note or on the diddle. the last thing I did was a 32nd note grid pattern of paradiddle-diddle, paradiddle-diddle, paradiddle and then repeat. Oh and you should probably know that paradiddle-diddles are a NON-alternating rudiment so the sticking you gave in your last comment was totally wrong. Thanks for watching though
gsxerwhite it’s no problem man! That’s cool. I do that too. The method in this lesson is just an idea that I used to separate them in my head when I was thinking of fills/chops at this time.
Nick Small well you gave me some new ideas to work on that’s for sure! And I have plenty of time to work on it! 👍🏻 Thank you! And God bless! The double paradiddle is my go to when my brain gets scrambled on the fly usually lol!
That was so dope bro! Just a little correction - a six stroke roll has two eigth notes (RL)and then the doubles are sixteenth notes (RRLL). Where as a Paradiddle-diddle is played all together as a group of SIX with a triplet feel, RLRRLL (1+A 2+A etc..) Six stroke roll: R L RR LL (1+ 2 E+A 3 + 4E+A) Paradiddle-diddle: RLRRLL ( 1 + A 2 + A 3 + A 4 + A) Same sticking but different.
I learned from this video. I would like to see more drummers actually shed . Everyone bring a basic kit and play solos off of 4 . A lot of kick ass church drummers.
been trying to play in that way for so long and never understood how people did it as it seemed to be so complicated just found out its a para-diddle which i know like the back of my hand
thanks i watch gospels drummers doing praise break stuff and now i kinda get an understanding for it, cheers im gunna favorite this video for reference
TheBeatSmith - Nick was gracious enough not to respond to your comment, but he's absolutely right about the six stroke roll sticking - RLLRRL-RLLRRL Here's a link to rudiment stickings for further reference: www.vicfirth.com/education/rudiments.php just click on the rudiment and you'll see the sticking.
Nick Toscano - Mr. Toscano.....I am not disputing six stroke roll sticking....I am simply stating a fact....Go listen at 4:00 and hear it for yourself....but please listen with a student ear not a he's my friend and I will protect him at all cost ear....ok.....
yeah i know that. I was talking about the relationship between paradiddle-diddles and six stroke rolls and how I PERSONALLY prefer to think about them in terms of application. Sorry if anything I said was misleading. Thanks for watching.
duuuuuuuude at part 2:14 is like dude but also this video really helped me out alot so thank's my dude drum on keep up the good work then you'll be the best drummer ever im a drummer my self so yeah after this i'll be such a great drummer keep up the good work dude
6 stroke rolls, or diddle diddles, can almost always get ya out of trouble, or impress the audience. What did you use to record this? It sounds excellent. I also like how either you were still working on the fill, and explaining it got it down for ya. Or, playing slow, is much harder than playing fast. This is far more useful than 99% of drum lesson vids out there. 2019, just came across this
Bubinga Basher wow thanks so much for the compliment! At the time, it was an iPhone 5 I believe that I used to record this video. Somehow, the otter box case that my phone was in makes the video sound better. lol
Hey man!!!! could you please explain a little how you think when tuning a snare??? how tight is the upper head and how tight is the lower on on relationship to it... thanks so much for the video, it truly helps a lot
Rafael Noriega Munoz Hey Rafael thanks for watching! My thinking is usually a medium to medium high sound. Not too poppy but no too low...gives a nice crack with rim shots that cuts through the band. I tune the top head slightly tighter than the bottom head.... i basically approach tuning my snare the same way i approach tuning my toms. Make sure the tone matches the size. I love my snare drum sounding very full but precise. Resonant but not with too many overtones. Hope that helps!
at 2;33 he looks like he just witnessed someone take a deuce on the floor. sorry. but an absolutely invaluable lesson that is immediately applicable once you've picked up the sticking and feel. this lick alone will give you a whole new section of your musical vocabulary. and it's cool!!!
I used to play my rudiments all the same volume on the drum set like that. I would try practicing making your RLLRRL for your six stroke roll triplets sound more like RllrrL make your accents loud and you double really low cause without that you lose the melody of the rudiment and you end up with a loud mess without a lot of feel.
milanthedrummer my dude, what I am saying is that people saying this garbage don't even have the nerve to put THEIR playing on youtube for people to look at. In other words, its easy to criticize when you are not doing anything..

This guy knows his stuff.

Love the grooves you play nick.
thanks for watching and for the kind words!
An interesting rhythm and application around the drum set.
It's a 5/4 polyrythm. 5 beats on the left, 4 on the right. I like doing that chop with 5 on the kick and 4 on the right hand.
I first learnt this many years ago and i love this video this has inspired me thanks

Jason E. John I’m no master...just a student! Thanks so much for watching and blessings to you as well!
Damn. I’ve been using them for the opposite. 6 strokes for straight 16ths and PDD’s for triplet groupings.
gsxerwhite it’s no problem man! That’s cool. I do that too. The method in this lesson is just an idea that I used to separate them in my head when I was thinking of fills/chops at this time.

You can play paradiddle-diddles (rlrrll) as a sextuplet (6's) AND as 32nds too. 5 groups of 6's + 2.

Its also funny that dudes are hating on stuff, yet, do they have videos..NOPE. do THEY put themselves out there..NOPE....smh
Hating is not good but you're judging people's comments based on how many uploaded videos they have which is also weird...
