Hike to Kendall Katwalk | day hike on the Pacific Crest Trail | 12.4 miles out and back, June 2023

  • This is an amazing day hike along the PCT! If you're in the area and looking for a challenging hike, I highly recommend it! Kendall Katwalk is a 150 yard long narrow pathway blasted out of a steeply sloped granite rock face on the north ridge of Kendall Peak approximately 6 miles northeast of Snoqualmie Pass. (Wikipedia)
The trailhead is easily accessible from Interstate 90 at Snoqualmie Pass. The challenge to this hike is the elevation gain and distance of the out and back.
When I was planning the hike I checked recent trip reports on the Washington Trails Association website, WTA.org, to see what the trail and snow conditions were like. When I went in late June there were just 3 small snow patches left on the trail, one on a slope and two on flat sections. Hikers were passing easily but I brought my microspikes in case I wanted them- I didn't want to go in 5 miles and then have to turn around.
The mountain views are amazing and I enjoyed the added bonus of seeing a wide variety of wildflowers along the way.
If you have any comments or questions please let me know! I hope you'll enjoy the video!
    Wildflowers and wildlife:
    Pika
    Vanilla Leaf
    Tall Bluebells
    Pacific Bleeding Heart
    Red Columbine
    Salmonberry - bloom
    Rosy Twisted-Stalk
    False Azalea
    Western Toad
    Western Trillium
    Douglas Squirrel
    Sitka Valerian
    Marsh Marigold
    Wild Ginger
    Violet
Other flowers seen but not included:
    Western Yarrow

Hi darling Jen! Oh, I have to say this hike is one of my all time favorites! What an incredible, absolutely breathtaking scenery! There were also exposed stretches to go, I might have had some problems, because I suffer a bit from heights when the paths are exposed, but I think the incredible beauty of the landscape would have made me go on absolutely!
Beautiful, truly a location to remember. As always a fantastic filming, dear. Very, very good! It seems to be there with you enjoying the enchantment of nature! My huge like and embrace. Have a great summer weekend and stay always blessed and healthy, sis! LOVE from Italy! Renata

Y, there are exposed sections, but when you’re there on the trail, and assuming you feel fine, you just don’t look down, stay focused ahead and go slow, and then before you know it you’re past that section and just fine! You start with little sections and build up your confidence that you’ll be safe and you get over being nervous! Yep, the beauty of the mountains is sure worth trying!! 😁💚💙 You’re so very kind and supportive- thank you from the bottom of my heart! Hugs and all the best from Washington! 🏔️🏔️🌲🌲🥾🥾

The toad jumped a bit, otherwise I wouldn’t have seen him…lol! I try to have my camera ready since things like that happen so fast! Yes, the air is fresh and it’s very refreshing, I’m sure you’d love it! I think they call it a ‘catwalk’ because it is a long narrow walkway that’s up high. The phrase is also used for clothes models who walk on a platform walkway to show off their fashion. It’s a fun name that lots of hikers have heard of. The trail is part of the long trail that goes all the way from Mexico to Canada called the Pacific Crest Trail, it’s about 2,600 miles long and hikers take about 4-5 months to hike the whole trail! Isn’t that amazing! 😄 I hope you guys are having a fun summer! Talk to you again soon! 👌😁

Always nice to tick off a trail you have been wanting to do for a while and a nice early start as well. Nice to see a bit of colour on the trail and some of the local wildlife too, on what looked like a great trail to follow. The viewpoint at 5K feet was jaw dropping, what an amazing view of the mountains in the distance. Bit of a rocky trail after that and some snow too and although there was a drop off on the Katwalk, the path looked good, as long as you did not meet someone coming the other way! Those views you got were amazing and I sure would be back on another day, what a great 12.4 mile hike that was, cheers Alan

I really enjoyed the views as the trail went higher,, great to see off into the far mountains! I was really surprised to see such a wide variety of wildflowers along the trail - I guess the catwalk gets most of the attention and people skip over the amazing colorful flowers on the way there. Yes, I think when you're there in person it's not quite so bad- just stay focused and keep walking forward. Hi Jennifer. It looks like an unusual hike.
The ground looks so poor and rocky...that I'm surprised anything grows on it.
But i suppose the trees and plants must be adapted to it. The trail gets awfully narrow at 14:00. I'm surprised people are allowed to walk on it. If they fell, they would probably sue the state for allowing public access to it, without guard rails. ( I'm sure people would try and sue in New York state, where I used to live. People are so " Sue - Happy" there.) Anyway...hope you're having a nice Summer. Warm Wishes...Always! 🦋🐼🐼🦋

    • @JenniferLupine
      @JenniferLupine  Год назад

Hi! Yes this section of trail is pretty unusual! I’m always happy to see what plants grow at the higher elevations…there must be enough nutrients and water for them… there’s a different set that will grow in the shade of the forest compared to the open sunny areas. Y, the catwalk has quite a steep drop-off- it’s way out in the wilderness where there are lots of trails with drop-offs and hazards, I haven’t really heard of people suing here. Yes, we’re having a great summer, Thanks! 😄 Jennifer

It's hard to imagine what it took to cut the catwalk out of the rock face- but it's done and it's exciting to traverse, just look ahead and don't look down!...if you go over you've got to go back or it's a long way to the next trailhead! All the Pacific Crest Trail thru hikers cross this way, so it gets lots of traffic during the summer. The notes on the trail day Do Not cross if there is snow. I was surprised to see the notice that horse riders must dismount- whew, how would a horse make it across? I'd rather be on foot anyway. Thanks for joining me! :) Jen

Hi Kev- I hope you can get over here to hike someday! Yep, there's about 2,600 miles of the PCT - that was about 6- lol!! Mayne someday I'll be able to backpack a few more miles, Yes, it's a wee ridge, very exciting to finally see it in person! Thanks! :)

Hi Pam! It's a pretty long hike, but the views are worth the effort! Thanks!
