Do you by any chance remember what his main snare was he was using that day?? His whole kit sounds stunning, but that particular snare sounds incredible.
@@adamponce8121 Wow...not one of his signature snares???? So, it won't be something discontinue'd, etc.. Very cool...thank you. Thing sounds fantastic! That had to have been an incredible experience.
Davih Silveira I know! I miss those years!! He played on Big Country’s album The Buffalo Skinners back in the 90’s. Great album. Every song displays his power!!
No drum head damping anywhere. I love how Simon understands that the kit (when tuned properly) Sings when the drums are left open to resonate. Beautiful. \,,/
Man Tama star drums are something out of this world. Perfect craftsmanship quality tone feel build and so versatile. Metal guys can play it and get a nice beefy loud tone and attack and get a totally different sound then a jazz guy with a super wide open thin tone. I’ve heard star drums sound exactly the way that style of drummer wants the kit to sound and the drums adapt depending on heads and tuning and sizes. Just perfection. I have a new generation Tama starclassic BB hyperdrive 5 piece kit I got in the exact finish and sizes I wanted shipped straight from the Tama warehouse for just 1800 bucks with the updated hardware and mounting features brought down from the star drums and it is just unbelievable what Tama gives you at that price point.
Stamp Jockey I won’t buy a kit that isn’t bass drum mounted toms. I have a Tama starclassic bb hyperdrive with the swivel wing bass drum mount and it’s the best mounting system ever. Same one simon has on this star kit. Never seen a star kit with bass drum mounts they should do that more. He definitly had his custom made and has his mount Way out on the tip of the bass drum. I was lookin for a backup kit and love the Tama superstar hyperdrives but they don’t make them with bass drum mounts so ended up with the Tama silverstar for just 400 bucks and love that kit as well. Tama all day!! Btw these star drums sound absolutely amazing.
How do you like the Silverstars? A local store here had a light blue set that sold quickly. I play a set of Starclassic BBs with the bd tom mount that look and sound awesome. I never understood the "virgin" bass drum idea. I never noticed a big difference in tonal quality. Because with more resonance, you just end up putting more muffling rings, gels, heads etc. to deaden the tone. And balancing toms off stands is precarious at best.
Stamp Jockey yeah some engineers don’t like it cause in the studio there will be some ring from the toms when u hit the bass drum BUT Tama has their world class technology and rubber isolating system and there is no bleeding through to the bass drum from the toms. Maybe other brands but tamas mounting system and headway has always been the best in the business. And the silverstars are AMAZING. Not quite starclassic level but for their price point u can’t beat that compared to other brands. I would seriously pick my silverstars over other companies flagship line kits. It’s more aggressive and loud compared to the superstars and doesn’t have the thinner maple shells like the superstar classics. Same old starclassic/superstar classic mounting system on the bass drum and just works. I take the silverstar out to smaller gigs and rehearsal and tour and that kit takes a beating and is built like a tank. Then I use my main baby starclassic BB’s for bigger shoes and studio recording but the silverstar could easily be someone’s main kit cause it’s just that good. Couldn’t be happier with both of my Tama kits.
Simon must have the Kick tom mounts custom ordered, usually Tama placed them in the middle of the drum. Simon's method make much more sense, this allows the kick to come back closer. I dig that.
Always surprised to see thumbs down. I guess people just become more and more judgmental nowadays only knowing not even half the story of one of the best drummers out there .
Dion Albers Most likely punk rockers and Gore metal fuckers ya know?: 'No one needs that many drums and cymbals it's stupid!' 'Its too 'Schooled AND Fancy' drumming to be cool!' 'Like Dude, what makes him Soo special? He's not doing 300 bpm blast beats and double bass so that means he sucks!' Whole list of ignorant thoughts I've heard many times.
4 dislikers are rythmical/ timing wise deaf? Don't like the sound? Don't like the setup ? Don't like your own inability to judge this mastery for what it is? GIt Gud disliker , u will appreciate what is around u for decades...
Oh relax. There are plenty of great great drummers. Many with just as much rhythm and many with far more actual technique. Simon is a fine drummer. Just leave it at that.
He loves them loaded double bass kits with the full rack Tom spread. I used to play similar kits ( "only" 9pc though) when I was in Thrash and Metal bands back in the day. Got to love that he's still got the real double kicks. Puts a smile on my face. I don't have a drum tech so I hate having to tote and tune two kicks, so I just play one with a double pedal. He digs that open sound. I do too but I use a 2 ply heads instead of single ply. I don't know if he's playing single or double ply, but they sound like single Maybe?
You can spend some money for his GoFundMe campaign: de.gofundme.com/jwequ-life-rebuilding-fund I hope the Guys from TAMA support him also with money and all the help he needs... Losing your studio like this is serious! Though i though he has at least another studio in L.A... One in Sherman Oaks, and the other somewhere in Los Angeles.
Star doesn't have bass drum tom mounts. Must be a Starclassic. They're Chinese and so is the hardware. Save money because the hardware comes starting to corrode.
I'm 62 years old , I saw this man at Berkee in Boston mass in the early eighties and I'm still amazed. 🥁
Was a pleasure drumteching for him that day! Great studio! Great sound! An honor to be working for Simon!

A true perfectionist, technique, sound and taste.
Tasteful, dynamic, groovy and powerful. One of the absolute greats.
unbelievably amazing talent .. lovely dynamics and musicality.. incredible drummer!
Great therapy, sitting in a room and just playing what you feel....."when you have drums you need nothing else!!" LOL
That snare sounds! Tama star are the best sounding drums out there!
I always get back to Simon and Ian P and a few more. Most inspirational.
THE REFERENCE SOUND ! For me Simon is the best sounding drummer and my idol since I saw him the first time live in 1992.
Miss you in Toto!!! Please, come back!!!!
Davih Silveira Not going to happen.
joseph migliore I know man, unfortunately!!!!

Toto sucks
Even at this age,his skill has not yet faded.
Lol, he's only 61. There's not many pro drummers that fade the older they get, they just keep getting better :)
He has ten times the power, skill and stamina of most drummers half his age.
No drum head damping anywhere. I love how Simon understands that the kit (when tuned properly) Sings when the drums are left open to resonate. Beautiful. \,,/
That gong drum - THOOM!! Love that. I really admire this guy's playing and have since the 1980s.

Amazing playing, AMAZING DRUM SOUND !!! NATURAL AND VERY DYNAMIC
love to see him playing always, amaze me
I just love the sound of that drums!
Amazing sound Mr SIMON
Grandissimo...as usual.
Snare bleed is bad enough on ONE snare..... he has THEEE!!! Having said that, he’s one of my absolute favorite drummers
Sweeeet... Great hands as usual Simon!... I want a set of STARS!... Bass drum mounted toms. Bring em back!

Here is one of the best drummers alive in our time!
Is Simon on tour in California??
Mr. D Agreed. Protocol 4 is amazing. Check it out.
Ive noticed that drummers who go bubinga eventually come back to maple 👍
Would like to know how that snare is tuned...pretty good !
Now THAT is HOW ya DEMO a PRO KIT!
well played, brother.

EastBay MauiBoy single ply Remo Ambassador heads all round except for the gong drum where he uses a tympani head , very thin !!
clear Ambs all around, even on bass drums and gong drum. Coated ambs on snares.
drummaman1 ... Tympani head on the gong drum !!!
yes, but it's ambassador thickness.
drummaman1 ... Timpani heads are always thinner than ambassador heads,so that they produce a bright sound with lots of sustain
Tama great drums. I would be happy with just a 3 piece.
What kind of Hihat is that? It sounds amazing
Just wow! Fantastic articulation! But who are we to say.
Yessssss !!! LIKE 3
I LOVE seeing actual drum videos uploaded lol Im such a fanboy, but can you blame me?
Curious, what are the drum specs?
If you put on mute and just just watch him play, you can even SEE his musicality. the way he plays the cymbals.
Muito bom....
Simon always sounds tasty!
Man, that kit has to be at least 25k.
What's up with the black 8 ball?

"all my life" a snare :P
I hope he's gotten his living situation squared away. Felt horrible reading that news.
stevedrums what happened?
He lost his home and studio in the brush fires in CA a few months back. Fortunately, his wife and dogs were safe, but everything else was lost.
As long as family are ok, the rest is replaceable.
Is the post-house disaster? I've been wondering what's up with Simon since then.
What happened to his studio?
Jan Ivelic it burned down in a massive bush Fire in california couple of months ago... huge tragedy!!!
MatrixSpyware oh my...😥

no is a star, tama putted the mounts specially for him...
That defeats the point of the super resonant mounting system. I don't believe it. Especially the price of the bass drums.
to 27 (+ counting) dislikers ,...u are the minority that no one gives a shit about. Btw what is that 8ball doing in front of the basdrum?
Seven minutes playing the snare drum, boring he's overrated !
A great musician can improvise a complete piece of music on the spot. And all without the use of backup dancers or a fake name.
