In this episode, Simon reveals some interesting details about his signature drum set and talks about differences between his studio and live setups. He also provides detailed insights in his miking technique, followed by an explanation of a drum recording setup exclusively using elysia analog processors. And what about that paint can full of sand?!
Simon is such a perfectionist wether playing or recording. There is no detail he hasn't considered or overlooked. These are just a part of the foundation that make him the legend he is. Thanks for all the decades of incredible music.
Decades of experience and wisdom in a 20 minute video... Thank you for this!
Thanks - we're glad you liked it.
I get it: this was recorded at Phantom Recordings in LA. Can you please take that caption down so I can see his full kit?
SO FRUSTRATING!!!!!!
Why?What do you think you are missing?
@@mattiemclean9882
It's just unnecessary to let it stay there. We want to look at his kit 🤓
Have you watched the complete video? When it comes to discussion on the bass / kick drums you get to see the kit then! I guess it is Phantom Recordings video...so therefore their right to present it how they like...frustrating as that might be 🙂
@@flocore I admire your honesty :)
I love to hear him speak, it's so calming and convincing :)
Vortexrec His playing is convincing too; proof positive without even a word!
yes I looove to hear his voice
I first learned about Simon Phillips from Pete Townshend’s 80’s solo records. Then I saw his amazing playing on The Who’s 1989 Tour. I have since learned about his varied and amazing session career and is original work. He is such a master craftsmen and just a brilliant drummer. Simon Phillips is a master of music.
Absolutely, it's great to listen to what he has to teach
Not only is he a highly talented and extremely musical drummer, he is also eloquent, very knowledgeable about the inner-workings of it all, and has a great speaking voice. Thanks for sharing this great video/session!
Thanks so much for your kind words - we actually could not agree more ;-)
Definitely the most informative drum mic explanation video that I have seen. I saw a Simon Phillips - Sam Ash drum clinic in Long Island, NY decades ago (& saw him perform with Jeff Beck ... AMAZING!). That was informative too, but this is highly detailed.
Such a great drum sound!!! Saw him at a clinic YEARS ago and I still think about how he played with such finesse and was so funny and inspiring.
Thank you so very much my brother. Appreciate you taking your time to explain your set up. You have just blessed my socks off.
The reason I bought a Tama Starclssic maple kit was for those pure sounding toms 🤘🏼🍻
They are satisfying aren't they?
That was awesome. We're all hungry for MORE. Thanks for posting
Brilliant drumming on Bernie Marsden's "Behind Blue Eyes". I like the little subtleties Simon Phillips injects into it.
I guess you tried to say Bernie Marsden's "Behind your dark eyes", instead of "Behind blue eyes" (The Who; Keith Moon).
Moisés Márquez Haha you're spot on. How I managed to get those titles confused I don't know - both great songs though. Thanks for the correction :)
The rhyme, the rhythm and the reason, Simon’s dedication to playing and recording his performances is exemplary. If you have enough channels to be able to mic to the fullest extent, then he’s got anecdotal facts to spare for every scenario.
If this whole drumming thing doesn't work out for Simon, he could easily have a career reading books on tape...Quite soothing:)
I thought the same, haha. He would be great at it! A true Gentlemen! ;)
He reminds me of Charles Bukowski
I listened to it multiple times and I really wonder if it is only me that finds the unprocessed sound much better than the processed one? I feel like the input has a lot more dynamic range and the output sounds a little constrained, muffled. I guess his secret is that his drums already sing naturally without even having the need to undergo any processing. :) What a true master.
3:26 Mic-ing the drumkit
8:36 Mic-ing tom-toms and "spill/bleed & phase"
14:25 For those looking for the bass drum talk.
Well Well Well, I continue to be amazed by your knowledge, which I use every day. Thank you once more for your numerous tech. tips. Hava Nice day...
You're very welcome. And whenever there is anything you'd like to ask - please just go ahead.
Fantastico, grazie per la condivisione di questo video!! :)
Thanks for posting this. There’s a wealth of information on this video alone
Great to see this type of tutorial. Simon is a master!
I have not used your plug ins ,,,,yet.....but I'm sure in time I will.
Been hearing you since Mike Oldfield days...Keep up
Nice video. Earned a sub. More of these pls!
Thank you! We're actually working on more at the very moment, but next time the theme will be a different one. Please stay tuned...
I'm pretty sure there is a mix-up with the audios at the end:
IN is most likely the processed sound as you can hear the compressor working, a lot of selective fresh treble frequencies not usually heard on any unprocessed mic signal and that wonderful Simon Philipps trademark transparent and rich sound, while the "OUT" sound seems uncompressed and flat, with the toms and snare sounding as they typically do before EQ, with their uncontrolled mids creating a bit more of a muddy, less transparent sound that I've never heard on a finished Simon Philipps mix. ;)
awesome video! thanks guys
What did i learn from this? It depends! ;) Awesome video! Love Simon
Argh! that lower third banner is annoying. Is it necessary to have it on the entire time? otherwise great video btw!
Yep. Hides half of the drum. Needs to be removed. Stupid ad.
A great teacher.
didnt know of the „speaker as microphone trick“ incredible.
Simon Phillip E' IL MIGLIORE IN ASSOLUTO DAI!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thanks for insights.
Thank you Simon...
Incredible human being
Great video! I've heard someone talk about the paint can trick before and I've actually tried it in a studio recording session once. It seems to work (albeit a subtle difference)! I'm just curious about the physics behind it.
The can filled with paint or sand mechanically absorbs a part of the sound waves/resonances inside of the kick drum, which generates a more controlled sound (that's how Simon would describe it) that is easier to record in the end.
+elysiaTV Thanks, come to think about it, kinda seems logical :-)
Great job
Very interesting on your kits mic set up.. I sure know what you mean about phase issues. I track with 16 mics on my kit here in the studio...Great tutorial..
i can listen him speak all day long
Top demais essa batera. mestre Simon Phillips👏👏👏👏👏Brasil
Phillips' voice causes resonance from the drum set, like a reverb tail.
Yesss! :D
The room sounds amazing
Bloody brilliant.
What is the impressor? I have googled it and not found it. I really like the engineering end.
Hello sir, I saw you drumming for the who in 1988 during their Tommy 25th Anniversary Tour. You were great.
I read somewhere back in the 80's that you were regarded as the most prepared studio drummer in the business because all your drums had small clip- on-mikes that you left on permanently, thereby being no need for.any engineer (studio or live) to mike up your drum kit. I gather from this video that you've changed your mike setup. Sir, assuming the story I read was true, why did you get rid of your permanent clip-on mike setup?
Hello John, it's quite likely Simon will not read this in time or at all, as this is not his official site. It would be better if you tried to contact him directly through the official page: facebook.com/SimonPhillipsOfficialBandPage/
Thanks!
People forget he played for Judas Priest for a hot minute. My favorite Priest music.
Yep, Sin after Sin. Great album. The first time I heard of Simon in the day 🤘🏼
I do love a good voltage joke
The technical side is very cool!
Simon No.1
Does anyone know what studio this was taped at?! 🙄
Sry didn't catch that part 😂
Steven - Right?! LOL!
Nope, sorry.
I totally agree about liking the SM57 better then the beta57. I really like the Beta-56's on Tom's, SM57 on Snare, Beta-52 on kick & SM81's for overheads. This guy's drum kit is way to big. It would be a nightmare having to record/mix it in the studio. Lol
22:35 JAW DROPPING...!!!
OMG HE IS A GOD
Separated at birth from Eric Idle.
Haha, yes :-)
Sure, but Simon was forgotten in the womb for a couple of extra years.
He completely forgot to describe the weave of the carpet beneath the kit. I'm very particular about the weave of my carpet. I also insist on carpets matching drapes.
Have you tried the "old" SM545 as a toppsnare mik? it´s a bit softer in it´s own sound compared to 57, (My opinion). What do you use for a "flat-hitting-drummer" on the under-skin on snare??
The best would be to ask Simon directly... you can reach him via his website: www.simon-phillips.com/
Cheers!
Hola buenisimo video!! pregunta para afinar toms y snare utiliza el parche de arriba mas tenso que parche de abajo de abajo?
Anyone else getting Howard Moon vibes? Speaking of course both as a massive Simon Phillips, and Julian Barrett fan 😊
the Sony mic for snare drum at Trident was a Sony C38B.. if somone wondered
I did wonder. All I know about Sony mics is that EMI sold off a shed load of them at the Abbey Road "Sale of the Century" around 1980/81. Mostly C37s if memory serves.
I think this was recorded at phantom studios not sure though.
Good sound from drums !
Thanks ;-)
3x took him about 8 hours to tune those and its worth it the most beautiful sounding drums ever
My friend Simon i had a red Tama swingstar with cymbals all the series2001 by paiste.the only thing i had change was snare.of course i didn't have so many pieces just the basic but still sound was extraordinary.please tell me this monster made you alone?thank you.
omg that difference!
Glad you like it ;-)
love it
steve coogan really likes his drums
LA is Louisiana, but he's in his home studio in Los Angeles, which is L.A. Right?
There's a question I would like to ask Simon Philips that's been hunting me forever, does he use triggers in his octobans? How come do they sound glassy?
The best thing you could actually do is to get in touch with him directly... His website, is: www.simon-phillips.com/ , and you can use the contact tab to send him a message via email. Cheers!
Did Simon and Jojo get together and and agree on letting their hair go for that addict look?
Haha!! That's the first thing I noticed was that they look wired. They don't touch that garbage!!!
What do you mean?
Jeff sounds as if he knows quite a bit about that "addict" subject...
When you're as great as those two...you can "style" your hair any way you want to.
Who's this guy and where was it recorded?
You don't need to know, clearly.
Hahaha, seriously. You can take the caption down now, guys.
I looked up the elysia and damn near had a heart attack! Guess I'll put that on my list of things to get next to the Bugatti, mansion and a real life.
I love Eric Idle
If IN meant unprocessed it sounded better than the processed OUT sound! More live, feel, crispier.
Yes, that confused me as well. I am 98% sure that this is incorrectly labelled:
IN is most likely the processed sound as you can hear the compressor working and that wonderful Simon Philipps trademark transparent and rich sound, while the "OUT" sound seems uncompressed and flat, with the toms and snare sounding as they typically do before EQ, with their uncontrolled mids creating a bit more of a muddy, less transparent sound that I've never heard on a finished Simon Philipps mix. ;)
Does anyone know where this is recorded? And who is this guy?
It takes him 8 hours to tune a brand new kit they sound so beautiful
There are also crystal Microphones and piezo microphones
Where was this filmed?
He needs to try AutoAlign from Sound Radix!
I really hope he's using noise gates on the kicks, Snare & Tom's. It would be a bloody mess literally without them.
I love you!
bad ass! big dog aint fuckin around
I really think it is quite amazing that professional audio engineers demo equipment without loudness matching. Surely Elysia are marketing towards pro audio technicians, and believe me, I wont trust anything that is not loudness matched!
I find it vey funny that 37 voted thumbs down. Are you kidding me?? They obviously know more than Simon Phillips.
Saw him with a three pass jazz ...he jaco...can't think of the gtr..Allan holdsworth? ...any way he was young it was amazing...
Tip: You have to choon your drums to sound like Simon Phillips
there are also printed ribbon mics
what console is he using? is a console or a controller?
Check out this other video we did with him, showing which equipment has been used: ruclips.net/video/QVLQCQkAZ6Y/видео.html
Ben listening to Simon Phillips for ages. Saw him at a clinic probably about 30 years ago. Great player, and some some iconic tracks. Still find it difficult to listen to how he gradually gets more 'American' in the way he talks - kind of drumming Lewis Hamilton. But what a player!
Well, he has been living in LA for quite some time now ;-)
OK, fair enough then (although no matter how long I'd lived there, I'd never speak like that!). ;)
;-)
I use an EAD10. It picks up 4 up q down.
LOL paint can full of sand gonna have to try that one.... who would have thought?
Remember to really fill it with sand instead of the paint ;-)
Yeah, the one thing you don't want to forget.... peace
Yup, he could absolutely narrate wildlife TV shows if he ever wants to stop being an elite drummer!! Lol. Might even give David Attenborough a run for his money!!
good
I thought best was one mic on the front, 2 at handlevel on the sides facing towards the drums and 2 overheads for stereo.
Indian summer))))
if you pause it at 12:11 you will get a Simon with his head growing out of his shoulder
essentially
The Tom Tom's!.! Lol
I remember having a speaker wired up in reverse as a kick drum mic when I did a recording session.
To capture the kick’s room sound and low end, oops just noticed he has one also.
Auto align plug in solves all of this now
The sound engineer for this video should have had him remove his bracelet or his watch if we really want to pay attention to detail.
Sorry, but where's the entire drum solo ... that's a bit of a tease!
Might be this one: ruclips.net/video/1rR-JpeVaZ8/видео.html
Here you go: ruclips.net/video/1rR-JpeVaZ8/видео.html
Enjoy!
Legend way better thant the Mike Portnoys of the drumming world
he can play on a cardboard and will be great .
... and it would look pretty cool as well, hehe...
I just don't understand the whole subkick thing in the modern DAW era. It is pointless
does he even know what is he talking about?....Just kidding :)
