Rejected Takeoff Aftermath with ATC - Bristol Airport!

- After reaching about 60 knots this Easyjet A319 Registration G-EZFI suddenly slammed on the brakes, deployed the spoilers and engaged reverse thrust. The Pilot described it as a fault so it was probably a visual warning on one of the displays that made the pilots reject the takeoff. After holding on the runway for a couple of minutes the aircraft taxied to the end of runway 27 and vacated. The A319 then taxied to holding Point G4 where it caried out various drills to try and reset the fault. Following about 10 minutes of holding on the taxiway the pilot declared they have been unable to fix the problem and so requested to return to stand. The plane taxied slowly back to a stand followed by the Ops vehicle, where engineers attended to fix the problem. By this time I had to go home but as far as I know the aircraft departed again safely later on in the afternoon.
This occurred at Bristol Airport.
My mate and I both weren't filming the takeoff; you can imagine how frustrated we were! Ah well, It would've been unfair if one of us was filming and the other wasn't;) Go check out his channel here, he has brilliant aviation videos: / bristolcardifairport

WOW! Very cool rejected takeoff, incredible catch! Quite an amazing shot, well done man :) Love the ATC as well, LIKED!
Thankyou:)
excellent filming mate, was a nice surprise although we weren't filming! ;) Love how you included the ATC comms in text, makes a fantastic video even better, liked :)
Thanks mate! Yeah it's a shame we weren't but still exciting to see:)Thankyou!
As a retired Captain, 767, 757, F-100, Bae146, for a routine reject at 60 kts, I'd done the same except not come to a full stop, brakes and reversers as required, just continue down the runway and turn off at the end or whatever exit the tower wanted. A full stop puts more heat in the brakes. Sitting with parked brakes, less cooling, chance of warped discs but at 60 kts, probably not a big concern. A more dramatic eject, still turn off at end, not do a full stop unless the end of the runway is under the nose. If brake limits are approached or exceeded, stop for inspection by fire crew. Get out the charts and determine brake cooling time. Of course, figure out the fault. For something like a fire, maybe position the burning side downwind so the flames blow away from the fuselage, slides, passengers.
On some looong runways, a reject at 60kts, you might have to add power to get to the end. Often, just close the throttle at 60 kts and she'd slow down just fine.
We used to call them "aborted takeoff" but the Evangelicals were opposed to all abortions.
Thankyou very much for your insight and information! Very useful:)
Typo there ? "A more dramatic reject" ? Great comment.
A330 FO here. I believe as a result of accidents such as British Airtours Flight 28M the SOP is now to stop on the runway in all rto cases.
mikersey How come they don't say what the problem/fault was, is it not common to do that??
Current practice on an rto is to announce to atc that you are 'stopping'. It's not particularly important for them to know why. The phrase alerts them that you are rejecting and they therefore know to alert the fire services. These are easily cancelled later.
The only reason you'd speak with them regarding the problem would be to get help troubleshooting, or if you need to explain a non-standard procedure.. They are there to provide you with a service, so unless you are asking something specific, it's normally best to say as little as possible to avoid confusion.
With these speaking accents, I fully anticipated the tower to say "mi we please escote you some tea whilst you wait? We could deliver in front of your bonnet."
+David Spencer suggest to them all the flight-deck Annunciations should speak proper Brit when equipment landing at any UK facility and let me know how it goes
What accents?
They might be able to fit some hay in their too, ;)
Each easyJet should have a queen lookalike at the front of the cabin to greet each passenger as they board.
Great catch man! I like how you tried to include as much as you had :)
Thankyou very much:) Exactly:) I thought as I didn't get the actual rejected takeoff I should at least include ATC + subtitles;) Cheers.
Fantastic feeling everytime you listen-in on the ATC chatter. Sadly, I can't do this in India. But, there is hope. Awesome clip MrAviatianguy!! For us AvGeeks, anything will do 😉❤️😇
Thankyou! 😄
What a super catch, nice filming job and audio as well, very good!
Thankyou:D
You are most welcome, :o)
Wow! Bristol is my home airport, I Havnt seen any vids of RTO's or go-arounds! Thanks for the vid! Awesome
Same I live in Bristol
i normally see people at that spot when i'm taking off or landing. that is a brilliant bit of video. i think i'll have a look there the next time i'm due to go out of there.
+Andrew White Ah yes it is fairly popular. Thankyou for your kind words on my video.
Awesome catch! Thanks for the ATC Subtitles! Well done! Huge like :D
Thanks for the feedback:) Cheers!
Awesome video and great catch man! Good effort for including as mush as you had! Love the ATC! Liked!! :)
Thankyou so much!:D Yeah I thought seeing as I didn't film the actual rejected takeoff I should include subtitles:) Thanks!
Good video of a rare occurance....liked at the ATC banter too.
Thankyou:)
RTO at around 60 kn isnt that big of a deal. It isn't considered a high speed RTO and the plane can handle it pretty easily. The passengers would have had a nice wake up call why you should have your seat belts tight but nothing different than slamming on the brakes to a red light. Now a RTO above 100-110 kn is different. That would feel like you hit a brick wall. It's amazing how fast those planes can stop for how big they are.
It's unlikely that he has engaged the thrust reverser at or below 60 kts, due to FOD risk associated with operating REV THR at that speed. If this happened, there are 2 options: their speed was well above 60 (say at least 80 kts) - or - they had to return to stand to check the engines for FOD. There is no need for reverse thrust at those speed, rejected take off performances are calculated to ensure a safe stop until V1 with no use of REV THR.
Oh right! Thanks for the info! Like I said I didn't see how fast it was going, all I heard was the reverse thrust, so you are probably right, it may have been going a lot faster:)
Mraviationguy Thanks to you for the video!
Since when? Procedure no doubt will dictate that reversers are always deployed on rejected take off regardless. How much FOD do you think is on the runway?!?!?!?!
Even small amounts of dust would not justify an unsuseful deploy of reverse thrust. FOD is not only big metal objects.
And check the books, commercial twin jet will only be certified to operate on a runway only if able to stop with no use of reverse thrust. Reverse thrust must be intended as an aid to the primary wheel braking system.
Since where is secondary wheel braking?
Amazing catch man! Great work - ATC was very cool! Liked very much! :)
Thankyou so much:)
Wow awesome video Archie! Really good that you caught the aftermath. shame about the rto but oh well :P
Thankyou mate:) Yeah a great shame:( Ah well.
Nice catch! Good thing it turned out safely.
Thanks! Yeah.
Great Catch! Shame you weren't filming the takeoff, but the aftermath is great to see :D liked
Very nice bit to listen and watch there mate. Shame you didnt get it happenning (i bet youll never miss one now lcc or no lcc haha) well done really enjoyed it liked :)
Thanks mate:) Yeah it was so annoying:/ Cheers.
Very good catch there mate! glad the problem was not serious. Liked :)
Thankyou:D Yeah much later and it could've been a lot worse:/ Thanks:)
Mraviationguy
Communications between pilots and control towers are akin to doctor's notes
Liked! I like the way you handle the text at the bottom of the screen. No room for longer messages, though.
Thanks! Yeah long messages were a slight problem haha:P Thanks for watching and liking.
Great ATC catch, nice video work with subtitles ;)
Thankyou:)
Great video.☺️ I just subscribed to ur channel.☺️
Thankyou - welcome onboard!
Mraviationguy Ur welcome and thank you.☺️
Very nice record, i also filmed an EZY RTO this summer but i hadn't my ATC radio... :(
Thanks! Have you uploaded it?

thanks for sharing this great story love to watch it
Thanks dude:D
Mraviationguy I love seeing contributors appreciating comments on their channel. You've got some great videos man! Keep it up!
Thankyou so much dude. Sometimes it is hard to keep up but when people appreciate the creator connecting with his subs it makes it worth it:)
Good stuff.
nice work, there goes your well earned "thumb up"
Quite a difference, in demeanor, between the UK controllers and, say, the JFK Controllers.
Hmm yes I know what you mean. Thanks for watching.
Nice video and catch
Thanks dude!
Love the video. Great shot of the plane!
Thanks!
Amazing video, it is great that you included all the details 5*
Thankyou!:D
Very interesting thank you
I was on this flight en route to Glasgow .
vernon wooldridge Seriously!? Wow must have been a little scary. Thanks for watching.
So how long after this video ends did they wait before taxiing around to try another takeoff?
What was reason for rejection? Did they share with passengers?
Just another day at the office for us ;-)
Not a bad job:P Thankyou for watching.
You = legend
Thanks!
I honestly thought they said "oops" as in "whoops what happened?" LOL 😂
Haha:P Thanks for watching!
Woah
Return to stand? Is that similar to returning to gate or is it different?
+nsaneone same thing
Really nice!
Thankyou:)
That is one small runway.
Great video. I just forwarded it to my boss at United Airlines.
Thanks! Ah wow thankyou so much for sharing the video.
Come on then First Officers ...What was the Fault that had to be reset ?
Awesome! Really nicely done! Huge LIKE from me :)
Thanks man:)
Wow so nice
Thanks!
Great Vid!!!
Thankyou!
I thought it was illegal to receive ATC in the UK.
i wonder if this happends more then we think
+rowdy Yeah it would be interesting to know how many there are every day! Thanks for watching.
hey your welcome check my channal out that would grewat
2:35 in fsx tutorials it says you should never taxi faster than you walk lol
+William Varga Haha:P Thanks for watching.
Well, keep in mind he was on an active runway.....
hey, what is the model of the scanner you used? im about 6 miles from the airport with the aircraft flying over my area will the scanner pick them up?
+Oliver Holden Hi, I use a Uniden UBC75XLT, although in this video I was using a UBC72XLT. Yeah you should be able to pick them up:)
Wow perfect thanks so much, I'm learning to fly as part of my uni studies and find the ATC coms confusing at times but it's just practice :)
No problem. Ah right, happy flying. Yeah just practice, listening to the ATC with a scanner would help for sure.
Yeah thanks :)
Am I the only here who does not understand one single thing that is happening in this video? Where was the rejected takeoff?
Have you read the title? It specifically says 'AFTERMATH' as in the stuff after the rejected takeoff. I wasn't filming when it rejected takeoff but I filmed the AFTERMATH.
Mraviationguy Sorry, my bad...I saw my mistake a while after I commented. Should actually delete my comment.
No problem. Thanks for watching.
I don't think I should be viewing this video with the sound as it's illegal to listen or record ATC transmissions in UK airspace. Have you checked the legality of this clip?
+Don Mason Hi Don, no need to worry - it is only illegal to listen to/record LIVE ATC recordings in the UK. Since this was ATC from over 2 years ago there is absolutely no problem. Thanks for watching.
+Mraviationguy so if I listen to live transmissions on my air band radio is that illegal?
No it isn't illegal for you personally to listen to it, but it would be illegal if you transmitted that live to the internet i.e live-streamed the audio. Thanks for watching.
Mraviationguy Ah ok, and great video
DatBossAM :D Thanks a lot!
I'm a bit confused whether this is an A319 or A320. When searching the registration, it says A319, and the length of it talks more for it actually being an A319. But how I learnt to distinguish A319's from A320's was that the A320 has two over-wing exits whilst the A319 only has one, but this one seems to have two. Is there any simple answer to this?
Hi, hmm actually you've confused me now:L Yeah I used that method to distinguish between the 2 types. I think that rule works in the majority of cases but I guess there must be some A319s that have 2 over wing exits. I'm sure someone else might be able to help you:) Thanks for watching.
EZY A319s have two overwing exits to meet evacuation regs due to the high seating density.
Brian Farrington Ah thankyou Brian, that makes sense! There you are Sorenle
Hi. I'm thinking of buying a BaoFeng UV-5R. Can I listen to this sort of stuff on it?
Hi, thanks for the question. Just had a look at it and I don't believe you'll be able to listen to commercial aircraft frequencies as it appears to be missing the frequencies between 108-137 MHz which is where commercial ATC lies.
Hi I plane spot at Bristol every now and again and I listen to the ATC from my house in Cardiff Quite a lot but I have never heard and ground crew radio transmissions. Prehaps I have got a wrong frequency, what do you use??
Hi, Bristol Tower is 133.850, try that? It could be that you are too far from the airport and your aerial isn't picking up signals. Thanks for watching the video 😊
Mraviationguy thanks ill try that 🙂
Where is this in relation to the airport? I live quite locally and want to go planespotting for an afternoon sometime...
+The Astronomicals Thanks for watching. It is located on the North Side of Winters Lane by the 09 end of runway 27/09 at Bristol Airport.
Ive watched 4 RTO videos and they have all so far been Easy Jet. That should tell you all something.
Rocky Melendez Hmm interesting....that is weird. It may be that they have different standards of what they deem a good enough reason to Reject? Thanks for watching.
+Mraviationguy No there buget airline which means there crap. Probably employed lazy engineers who can't fix a problem which is why the rto happens
+Dylan Cotton What a load of unfounded absolute shite.
+The Panda like what pal?
It tells me that they have a lot of aircraft ;-)
What is the length of the primary runway @ Bristol?
2011m. Thankyou for watching 😀
Correct me if I am wrong but isn't that an A320?
Sam McErlean No definitely an A319. I tell this on Easyjets by looking at the titles, if there are a few rows infront and behind the titles it is an A320. Thanks for watching.
Mraviationguy
For sure this aircraft is an A320; 319's have 2 overwing window exits, 320's have 4...
After some research, I found that easyjet fly an a319 with 2 over wing exits. It's something to do with certification for flying extra passengers.
Make that 4 over wing exits. 2 on each side.
If this happened I would have missed my 2nd flight from Abu Dhabi to Melbourne because my 2 Nd plane boarding was an hr later
I was going from Paris to Melbourne
Where did this take place? sounds like a british accent
Bristol, England.
shame you missed it.its like watching a woman undress, you blink and shes got in bed already lol.damn.good atc though
Was that "The Blair Witch Project II" ?
You could have shown the take off , Why didn't you?
+Thomas Major Do you mean the second takeoff attempt?
Airport?
Breadstick™ Bristol Airport. Thanks for watching.
Mraviationguy thanks, Great video btw.
Thanks man!
Thats a Dud,,,,,, Some kind of 'Aftermath'
What?
Mraviationguy You have titled your video quite dramatically to show something very common place. I would have titled it "EasyJet Mini Farting around after coming up short".
An aftermath is "the consequences or after-effects of a significant unpleasant event." I guess the argument here is whether this was a significantly unpleasant event, some like you may argue a rejected takeoff isn't, whereas some may.
Mraviationguy The Aftermath is the subsequent stage or consequence of a disaster/catastrophe. A rejected take-off is a fairly regular event worldwide. Also in this case, nothing even close to a mishap occurred, forget a catastrophe. In such a case, what I reckon is, you have cried 'Wolf'.
dude the definition I gave isn;'t wrong firstly, thats what I found the definition to be. It is fairly regular, anything can happen in an RTO, e.g aircraft skidding off runway. Yes that didn't happen but I am not changing the title for you, also there aren't that many other words to replace aftermath.
Nice if we could see something besides the ground....
Scary English accent. It's very hard to understand when I talk to some English :)
+Flight Mania Haha:P Thanks for watching.
EASY JET SUCKS!!!!!!!!!!
Easyjet don't suck. If they sucked they would hire rubbish pilots. If they hired rubbish pilots they would have ignored the warning and most likely crashed.
