I think it's a funny one, because there are lots of players that have the same kind of achievements that are considered great players, even great champions. In my book, being a grand slam finalist makes you automatically a legend of tennis (Nishikori, Nalbandian, Tsonga, Ferrer) Hell, even making the main draw at a slam is a crazy achievement. I think people see grand slams as like the beginning, when I'm guessing basically 99% of pro players will never even make a slam. I'm guessing also less than 0.1% of pro players will ever win a match at a slam. There's just no metric where kyrgios is a "wasted talent" perhaps his game is too flawed for consistent slam runs, but he's laughing to the bank. More than making a living, he's made serious bank and he's been able to invest and diversify before the age of 30. Thats what i call fulfilling potential - i guess other people see it differently Its hard to see all the kids at school who *actually* didn't give a f. They generally don't manage to become elite athletes and make millions of dollars. Even with superior genetics or talent, you still have to get out of bed, train, dedicate your whole life to tennis and travelling and managing a career. That takes proper willpower, and I'm sure Nick has had to sacrifice just as much as any other talented sportsperson.
I would argue the most talented player to ever touch a racquet is Monfils, but Nick is good candidate as well. Both are insane shot makers that just could never keep it together mentally.

The match against Rublev was even more destructive than these highlights suggest. Find it and watch it. Nick DISMANTLED Andrey, and it was his backhand that did so much damage. I really think this match was peak Kyrgios.

He is not a great guy at all. It has been proven that he has sociopathic tendencies. His numerous outbursts, especially the nasty ones, indicate that appropriately. Does he have talent? Without a doubt. Does he have the mental fortitude and desire to be the best through discipline, absolutely not! Like a performance-oriented and expensive race car, they tend to crash when a loose cannon of a driver is at the helm.

Mentality comes with confidence and preparedness. He is almost never prepared and his confidence comes with his serve which is on about 70% of the time. You don’t just magically get a strong mentality.

I've been catching up on years of tennis I didn't watch for personal reasons. I have to say that when this guy is on, he's one the best I've seen. It's hard to say how he would've held up next to the big three had he took it as seriously as they did. Perhaps he took it as seriously as he could in his own way.
Sometimes I think Kyrgios plays the trick shots just to bring his oppositions mental down to his level, then beats them on skill. Imagine getting broken on the first serving game of the set, and then he just starts hitting it through the legs. I think I'd start smashing my head into the court.
He sort of focused, was motivated and healthy. Plus he adjusted the control left hand of his backhand and he made the finals of Wimbledon.. wish him the best when he gets back! He just always care most days when he plays.

Two facets of his game dictate domination--serve and backhand. When his serve is rolling, he's almost unbreakable, which skyrockets his confidence. If he's hitting his backhand with authority as well, it takes a prime big 3 to beat him. His forehand is always ridiculous.
Unfortunate we most likely won’t see him anymore. Mental game was always poor and the injuries don’t help. I remember when he withdrew from AO2024, he had said how much he hates playing tennis because of the constant pain he is in and he truly doesn’t love tennis anymore.
