We hear that from so many people! Lots of times they move away for various reasons, but make it a point to come back to the city they love🙌🏾

The name of the city that the county takes its name from is Béjar, so “bay-har” in Spanish. The X in Spanish usually works just like a J, i.e., with the sound we associate with H in English. "Bay-har" easily elides into "Bear" which is why Bexar County is pronounced Bear County.

You definitely have to make it down to the Riverwalk and just spend some time walking around and eating down there. I've been here for 8yrs and it still gets me everytime I head down there!

    Few things-
-When it comes to our military, a LOT of places from attractions to store have Military discounts and this carries our to spouses and their kids. Sorry it doesn't cover siblings or 'former' military brats lol. Vets get discounts though.
-Don't be surprised to hear the phrase "Show your shoes" during Fiesta. It should also be noted that Fiesta is also one big fundraiser too. All of the courts are perfect example of this, they all had to raise money for nonprofits in order to get their rank. Also the court where the women where those ornate gowns, they take like 18 months to make and they're always made by hand. The Witte Museum always has an exhibit open during Fiesta that features gowns from past Fiestas. If you can't make the Parades, all 3 major ones are always shown on TV- River Parade, Battle of the Flowers Parade, and the Fiesta Flambeau Parade.
-You're right about the Diversity! Another thing that is more people into our community is our colleges too. I always say if we weren't Military City USA, we'd be College Town USA lol. I graduated from UIW (University of the Incarnate Word) and it's an international University with 1/3rd of the Student population being foreign students (most from Mexico, but a good chunk coming from the Middle East and South Korea). I've known students from out of state and out of the country who end up staying here. I found out that SA has one of the largest Muslim Communities in the US and it has a huge population Hindus. I didn't realize just how big the Hindu community was here until I went to the Festival of Lights in Hemisphere Park one year in November. On another not, SA also has other festivals celebrating different cultures like the UTSA Institute for Texan Cultures has an Asian Festival and then the big Texas Folk Life Festival (one is in the spring, other is in the summer).
I have a funny story about #6- when my brother joined the military, his first assignment was out in California and he was shocked at the lack of turnarounds lol. He hated not having them there lol. Even when I visited him out there and I like, "Wow there really aren't no turnarounds." LOL.

It's BExAR, cuz Mr. Bear was illiterate and couldn't spell his name. So he would sign his name X, and his attorney would write in his name. So you get Bexar county

Husband has requested a transfer to San Antonio. I hate Seattle but I’m born and raised here. I just don’t know if I’d fit in in Texas.

We've had several clients from Washington State and the Seattle area make the move to SA and they're all really enjoying it here. Except for the heat, which is pretty ridiculous. It's aleady over 100 daily and it's not even July yet🥵.
Texas is a big state and each major city has it's own personality and vibe. I get that I'm a little biased, but I think most folks would agree that SA is one of the most welcoming places you could move to. I Hope that helps.
My team and I are always here for whenever you'd like to have a conversation about what it's like to live here and which areas might fit what you're looking for in a community. Happy to be a resource 😎
