Unboxing Vintage Cookbooks: Exploring Culinary History!
I will once again be flying in the Give Hope Wings fundraiser this year! Our June of 2024 flight will see us stop in many communities in Eastern Canada to raise awareness for this worthy cause.
Last year 2023 we raised over $27,000 towards helping our neighbours - we made a positive difference in the lives of many.

So happy that you found our little rum book interesting! It’s been kicking around on our shelf for the better part of 2 decades before we decided you should be the next custodian. Enjoy!
Awesome. I love rum and I will keep my eyes open for when he uses your book.
I live near Winona MN. Watkins products are sold in many local stores and the Watkins family home is being used as an assisted living facility and been called the home that vanilla built
You can find them at Menards here in the Twin Cities.
My best local grocery store has Watkins vanilla on it shelf. While the vanilla's label states it is pure and natural, the ingredients list goes an entirely different direction. As does the flavor. My experience with today's Watkins pure, natural vanilla: ouch.
I absolutely love it when Glen opens new old cookbooks. 😊
These episodes are great. So glad they emerged from the society of this channel!
Wish I had known about your channel in 2021, Cleaned out parents and sent old cook books to Townsend's.
These have become my favourite episodes.
Would love to hear more about why you rarely cook with fish. I know you've done a few shrimp recipes, but haven't seen much fish on the channel.
I didnt know Watkins had food items until maybe a decade ago. Now growing up we used Watkins (green) salve for dang near everything. Granny always called it 'green salve', but yea used it instead of Vicks Vapor Rub more or less. Also their liniment for muscle pain (tho its like macing yourself with it if you arent careful)
Love it! Looking forward to Sunday!
Yay for Maine Produces!
We still had a Watkins person into the 70s, I remember loving their lemon extract.😊
The later Watkins books that I have are excellent. My grandmother remembers "the Watkins Man" coming to her door. I was still buying Watkins products in the 90's, and loved the vanilla products especially. They even had a vanilla shampoo that was wonderful, and I wish it was still on the market. You can still buy their products from representatives or online.
Have you checked out the 1919 great Boston molasses flood where 2 million gallons of molasses flooded a busy part of the city. It is said that one can still smell molasses in that part of town. I believe the molasses was to be used for making rum.
We still had the Watkins man in the 60s when I was in grade school. It was very exciting when he came.
The macaroni loaf is really good. In the Watkins book.
The bit at the end there about the rum trade reminded me that Newfie Screech came from that trade route. Might be something to try to get to use with that booklet
Read the letter and saw they got it in Port Townsend, WA. Small world, that's where I'm from.
I have my grandmother's Watkins Cookbook. Mom told me when she handed it to me that Grandma said some of the recipes were not accurate, and you wanted to read through the recipes and question if the ratio of ingredients sounded right. I do wish my grandmother had corrected the recipes she thought were off. But writing in a book was sacrilege in my family.
Hey Glen, might want to blur her email address at 1:03
I missed that in the edit - I'll see what I can do with teh RUclips tools.
Seamless! :D does the job though.
There is a Watkins House near me. I havent stopped to Order anything. We always used the Salve. I tend to not like it, because its made with petroleum. But it does Work. We never seemed to use any cooking items from them.
I have a 1948 copy of the Watkins cookbook, i love looking through it but haven't made anything yet.
Hey Glen,
I emailed you a cookbook, cooking with beer that I compiled. Wonder if you saw it.
I don't drink very often but when I do it's Rum. Blame the salt water in my veins!
Couldn't resist googling the brand and was surprised but pleased to learn several generations of the Felton family distilled Rum from 1819 to 1983 in Boston.
Thanks for sharing my passion for reading cookbooks like best-sellers.
4:47 Did you, did you work on the Milk Calendar for the Ontario Milk Marketing Board?! When I moved to Edmonton from Kingston, I'd Get friends to hunt down an extra copy of the milk calendar and send it out to me!!
My grandma had the Watkins man stop at her house every other month into the early 60's
I noticed the crimson color and 1936 year of that rum-mixing book-1936 was the 300th anniversary of Harvard University. Could you let us know, when you peruse it further and gift us with a video-if this little book has a Harvard connection?
Unrelated, but have you ever tackled a Philadelphia Cheese Steak sandwich on the channel? Maybe your riff on one? ✌️
I use watkins baking vanilla and I love it!
This is SUCH a lovely, friendly channel. And I love that you never cook with fish. Yuk.
During the 60s, the local Huskster guy delivered Watkins products
Just as an update, the screen is blurred, but the e-mail is still visible.
Does Watkins Cook book + Glen = Watkins Glen, NY
I copied down the Good Applesauce Cake recipe to try the next time I get applesauce. Thanks to the housewife who originally left the recipe in the book!
What did we get this week???!!!???
